All of it would probably sound insane to someone who knows little about the report and about all the things that have been happening as of late, and Mars knows this well.

That may perhaps be why his attention turns to the Espurr, picking up the kitten pokémon once it decides it trusts him enough to approach him. As always, it seems as if Mars has a way with cats, although this time it may perhaps be thanks to the presence of Barnaby’s Persian.

”You know about how Unown showed up at the Star Soirée, right?”

There’s a small pond nearby, and in it, there’s the familiar sight of a swimming Bruxish. Had it been abandoned here, or had it wandered all this way from the seafloors where it usually dwells?

Whatever the answer, Mars reaches for a Luxury Ball, this time releasing a Zeraora and signalling towards the fish while still petting the Espurr in his arms.

The electric feline acts fast, swiftly PARALYZING the Bruxish so a pokéball can be thrown at it.

While Mars' attention was distracted by the ESPURR, Barnaby whistled for Bijou to return to his side. The NINETALES promptly romped over to him, an EXEGGCUTE head held tightly in her jaws; the other heads feebly bounced behind her in an effort to catch up to their brethren.

Barnaby tossed a Poké Ball at the poor Pokémon before returning his attention back to Mars.

"Yes, I heard about that... quite a disastrous affair, no?" He replied, grimacing.

He only knew what had been disseminated to the public which, more than likely, wasn't the whole story.

"You were there?"

Briefly, Barnaby's eyes flicked over to Gabrielle, who was now stalking a PIDOVE by the pond. Her movements were slow but deliberate and, after meticulous patience, she pounced. A flurry of feathers announced her success.

While all too important to him thanks to meeting chryssa glasgow and hearing about her prophecy, the Star Soirée had, without a doubt, been a horrible night. Starting by who he was with to the stupid choices he had made because he cared for someone who shouldn’t have mattered to him at all.

His wishes revealed as if to mock him, twisted into nightmares of a different kind than those that haunt his nights…

”I was.” There’s no point in denying it, but it's at that moment that the Zeraora returns with the pokéball containing the Bruxish. The Espurr is put in one as well, Mars then petting the tuft of fur between the former feline’s ears as if to praise it. Fulgora closes his eyes i response, enjoying the affectionate gesture.

”When the Interdream Zone took over the observatory after the meteor fell, rifts opened between the dimensions and Unown came pouring out of them. Some of us used our Unown to interact with the wild ones and close the rifts, they guided us out of the mist…”

Mars' words felt like a dream. Like some fantasy that had no place in the real world. And yet this was their reality; the fabric of space and time were shifting and creaking under a foreboding future.

"Incredible," But not in a good way. "And horrifying." An expression of concern, so fleeting at the beginning of this meeting, now remained on Barnaby's face as he looked to Mars.

"What was it like... the mist?"

A metallic cry called out from behind a pair of boulders nearby. In the shadows Barnaby could see a METANG idling. With a nod he sent both of his girls to dispatch the mechanical Pokémon.

The appearance of the Metang serves as a temporary distraction, Fulgora looking up at him as if wondering if he should go deal with the wild Iron Claw Pokémon. Mars simply shakes his head, allowing Barnaby’s pokémon to handle the situation while his own attention turns to his Unown.

’What was it like... the mist?’

He knows he can’t just ignore the question.
[break][break]
There’s a sigh, a hand still petting the Zeraora. ”They called the mist the Interdream Zone. At first it was supposed to show your dreams, your biggest desires, but then… I guess it got corrupted. It all turned to nightmares.”

His own desires had been used against him to hurt him the worst way possible.
[break][break]
But, if he were to step in the Interdream Zone again, would he still see some of the same things he saw back then?

No, and that is something Mars knows well.

"Your biggest desires turned to nightmares..."

Barnaby still had a difficult time wrapping his head around their reality. That there were different worlds from their own, that portals could tie these worlds together. Even harder still to comprehend was the thought that their human consciousness could be tampered with in such a way.

"How awful. I can't imagine..." How could he without being there in the chaos of that day?

"These Unown must hold great power." An apprehensive glance was given to Mars' band of unassuming UNOWN. They didn't look like much, but Barnaby couldn't help but feel uneasy around them.

Just then, the girls returned from their romp, dragging the fainted METANG behind them - one carrying each of its arms. A Poké Ball was lobbed its way, securing the metal beast.

Barnaby's gaze fell onto the pond a few feet away. Orange light from the setting sun played off the nearby water, casting the group in a cozy silhouette. It was a pleasant, distracting scene, enhanced by the copious amounts of tiny shadows that flew across the reflection.

WOOBAT, beginning to stir from a nearby cave. One brave bat fluttered close and actually landed on Barnaby's shoulder. Did it have a death wish? Whatever the case, it dragged a small smile out of the man. A hand was raised to give the little fuzzball a pat on the head.

Dreams. Nightmares. They are things Mars has used against people many times before. Things many of his psychic type pokémon had been taught to specialise in, for desires and fear are such easy ways to bend someone’s will. Usually, he wouldn’t care for the thought of someone else living through their worst nightmares, but Barnaby… Well, perhaps he’s one of the few people to whom Mars wouldn’t wish something like that…

Mars finds himself looking at the Unown when hearing Barnaby’s response, but he turns to look at the journalist. What is that in his tone? Appreciation? Respect? Worry? Perhaps all of those.

”They do, but honestly I barely even understand it.”
[break][break]
It’s an admission Mars wouldn’t make to most people, because to him, in this life he lives, not knowing things is weakness.

”They… Hmmm… Did you hear about what happened at the Tree of Life? I assume word has been spread about some of it by now…”

It had been recently, and he’s so focused on the thought of this and the conversation itself that he barely even acknowledges the way his Zeraora slips away to go annoy a resting Linoone. The poor thing doesn’t stand a chance, and soon enough it’s the loud crackling of electricity that proves as much.

There was a sadness in Barnaby's eyes as he looked to Mars. He wondered, briefly, what sort of twisted nightmares the man was forced to endure in the Interdream Zone. What were his biggest desires? His hopes, his dreams?

In this moment, Barnaby felt sorely other next to Martín del Mar . He wanted to know more about the ROCKET admin, but wasn't sure how to navigate and form that more intimate connection.

After all, Barnaby didn't want to overstep. Asking too many questions had had repercussions in the past...

"I heard that the tree has grown immeasurably large..." He frowned, adding, "...other than that, I am not sure. I am painfully out of the loop." Similar to Mars, this was an admission that Barnaby would not make to most.

A second passed and his serious tone was broken by a teasing smile. "Be sure to drag me along the next time there's an expedition."

Movement out of the corner of his eye momentarily dragged Barnaby's attention away. Gabrielle was padding towards them with something dangling in her mouth... oh, merde. It was a young LILLIPUP.

"No, no, my love. That is not a snack."

They stand at opposite ends of a cliff over which only the most basic foundations of a bridge have been laid. A beginning, but not one that would allow for crossing safely from one side to another. Not yet.

Mars watches Barnaby when listening to his admissions, the frustration being something he recognizes all too easily. BARNABY FINCH is apparently not fond of not knowing things, and Mars can relate all too well to this. Is that why he smiles at him? Why he reaches for him, gently tucking a loose strand of blonde hair behind an ear?

”And risk having gargantuan beasts ruin that pretty face? That would be criminal.” Which, of course, is what they both are: criminals. As per usual, each of Mars’ words is said with intent and purpose, even providing Barnaby with some of that much desired information.

”Don’t worry, it’s one of the things Rocket will ask of you soon enough.” It’s then that he takes his hand back, catching a glance of a Kirlia in the corner of his eye. Mars looks at his Zeraora then, nodding towards the wild Psychic type.
[break][break]
”The way into the dimension within the tree was blocked by a barrier of Unown, unlocked by words from the Unown Report, and in order to leave… I instructed my Unown and those of others to create a portal back to Sootopolis.”
[break][break]
That much he has no trouble revealing to Barnaby, but his gaze remains fixed on the Kirlia, watching as it attempts to TELEPORT away from its fate. It’s too slow. Fulgora’s PLASMA FISTS reach it first. Admittedly, it reminds him of when he narrowly avoided death within the tree thanks to his own Gardevoir’s teleportation skills.

Gargantuan beasts.

The thought of monstrous titans razing Hoenn to the ground made Barnaby's blood run cold, a feeling that was momentarily eased by the gracious touch of Martín del Mar.

He had a knack for brining Barnaby back down to earth. His honeyed words and teasing smiles and all the little gestures in between. These things were comforts to BARNABY FINCH.

"I see your priorities are in order." He teased back, returning that characteristic grin. "I am more than a pretty face, though, Martín."

A loaded pause passed between them before he continued, more gravely, "I'm ready for that call, whenever it may come."

That was the price of being apart of ROCKET, after all. You paid in blood whenever it was asked of you.
