Of course he knows as much, and they both are aware of that. Still, the sentiment remains all the same, because despite the time spent together, despite how familiar he is with many of BARNABY FINCH’s best developed skills, Mars has never seen him in a situation like that. How would he have fared inside the tree? Would he have done well? Would he have been afraid?

Mars recognizes then that these questions don’t just come out of an admin’s wish to know the full extent of the abilities of a member of Team Rocket, but out of concern for someone who matters to him. A friend.

”Is that so? Then maybe you should show me what you can do sometime.” For once, it’s not meant as innuendo or anything of the sort, no matter how enticing his tone or the look in his eyes. It’s a promise made by an admin to work together soon, for Team Rocket, and not in the ways they have done until now.

It’s the rusting of leaves that catches Fulgora’s attention then, and while Mars watches the scene, he doesn’t stop the Zeraora when it decides to pounce at a nearby bush. A Stufful. Of course it’s a Stufful.

”Hm… It’s complicated. I could probably gather Unown and get them to create a portal, but it would be locked by words from the Unown Report, and ever since the tree…” He pauses, shaking his head lightly as he looks at the Symbol Pokémon above him. Symbol Pokémon which mere sight brings dozens upon dozens of words to mind. ”It was a different dimension, Barnaby. Some of us, those who made sacrifices, were granted the skills of certain pokémon there… We encountered some I had never seen before, gigantic Rillaboom, and an even bigger Seviper that was feasting on Xerneas. We managed to rescue it, thankfully…”

"Gladly." A short but sweet acceptance to Mars' suggestion, confident but not overly so. Although Barnaby's talents lied in subterfuge and intelligence-gathering, making him an ideal fit for Killian Decker's spy network, he did grown up within their shared criminal organization. Combat training had been as much apart of his schedule as arithmetic or swim team.

It would be interesting to test these skills against Martín del Mar.

"Hm… It’s complicated."

No kidding. Barnaby listened with morbid interest, his frown deepening the more Mars explained.

So there were limits to this power. Limits that didn't appear to be explored completely - or else surely ROCKET would have exploited such an ability by now. But it seemed that there was much beyond these portals that defied comprehension in their world. What a frightful prospect.

"So almost like Avatars, for the duration of time spent in that..." The word felt so foreign on his lips that Barnaby had a tough time getting it out. "...dimension." God, it felt they were discussing the plot of some sort of videogame. What was that adage about truth being stranger than fiction?

"Wait, Xerneas? You rescued a legendary Pokémon?"

Barnaby was so caught by surprise that he didn't even notice Gabrielle and Bijou batting a JIGGLYPUFF back and forth like a beachball.

”Something like that, but not quite.” How to explain it to someone who has never experienced something like that? Perhaps a part of Mars should be concerned by how normalised notions like dimensional travel have become for him over the past few months, but while he can acknowledge that much, his concerns about the matter lie somewhere much different. ”It really changed some people.”

Just as he turns to ask Barnaby this, the Unown stir, something that approaches seeming to have caught their attention. A Porygon2. What is something like that doing at a place like this? Mars frowns slightly at the sight, and the Unown swarm around the pokémon that is as if their antithesis. Beings so ancient that they’re far from understood, and one completely created by human ingenuity. Fascinating.

Beeps and boops, strange sounds, but the Unown seem to accept the Porygon2’s presence… for now. Mars throws a Luxury Ball in case that were to change.

”It was a difficult battle… Many were injured and some lost their lives. It’s good to know that at least Xerneas is safe and supporting us now. It’s in good hands.” As these words are spoken, thoughts of bryan delarosa and his endless concern over the legendary pokémon’s wellbeing come to mind, and they cause a faint smile to tug at the lips of the admin. Xerneas had made a good choice, that much is clear to him.

"Can you guess what pokémon mine was?”

What a nebulous question. There were almost one thousand Pokémon known to mankind - how was Barnaby supposed to parse out the one that had been given to Mars through some interdimensional magical power?

But, true to Barnaby's competitive nature, he contemplated for a moment. Images of Mars with adorable LOPUNNY ears and a cotton ball tail came to mind. The thought brought a devilish smile to the journalist's lips, but he pushed that guess aside in favor of another.

"Perhaps... a Meowth?" POG Bank's marketing team was definitely working overtime, as their advertisements - with the company's cheeky feline mascot - were everywhere. MEOWTH was one of the first things that came to mind when Barnaby first met Martín del Mar . So, why not use that as his guess?

Speaking of cats, his PERSIAN leisurely strode up behind him, pressing her elegant body against his legs, while also... crying? Something wet had definitely just hit his calf.

Looking down, Gabrielle was holding yet another little Pokémon hostage: a MIME JR. Sighing, Barnaby plucked the thing from her mouth and held it against his chest. The baby Pokémon settled down quickly thereafter, it's tears mellowing into light snores.

"Incredible." He said, not for the first time today. All of this was almost impossible to believe. "Who else ventured into this dimension with you?" Matched with an undertone of a question he couldn't quite bring himself to ask: who died?

In a gesture that is a rarity coming from someone like him, lasting merely a second, blink and you miss it, Mars pouts at BARNABY FINCH. And then, he quirks a brow, tilting his head while eyes of amber shades remain fixed on those cobalt ones he knows so well. ”Meow.”

Meow indeed, but Meowth had not been the pokémon whose characteristics he had acquired after spilling his own blood at a shrine within the Tree of Life. So, Mars smirks, teasing as ever. ”That would have been pretty damn cute, but no.”

As if drawn closer by their conversation, Gabrielle approaches with her latest prey, and after Barnaby snatches the poor Mime Jr away, Mars offers her a hand to see if she’ll let him pet her.

"Who else ventured into this dimension with you?"
[break][break]
That isn’t what Barnaby actually wants to ask, is it?

”It was a large group, all the higher ups were there – Walsh included. As for those lost… I don’t think you’ve ever spoken to them, don’t worry.”

Perhaps, in his own way, it’s for the sake of offering Barnaby some peace of mind. Perhaps he’s simply glad that they didn’t lose more than what they had. The names are there, remembered as he had written them in his personal report.

"Did you just—" Mouth agape, grinning in disbelief, Barnaby stared at the admin for a few seconds. "Martín." He eventually chided, laughing.

"Alright, so not Meowth. What Pokémon was it, then?"

As they continued their conversation, Gabrielle gladly accepted Mars' affection, pressing her head into his offered palm and purring up a storm. Watching the scene brought a little smile to Barnaby's lips.

The smile disappeared at his next question, though.

"... How did it feel for you? Being in another dimension?"

Blink and you miss it, from the corner of his eye Barnaby noticed a yellow flash - an ABRA teleporting around the area. With a nod he indicated for Gabrielle to take action.

"Hypnosis. Stop it before it gets away."

It’s delightful.

Delightful how a simple, albeit silly, gesture can earn him a smile so surprised yet so full of joy. A lovely laugh accompanied by meaningless scolding. Things that, for reasons he does not bother to think about, make Mars feel as if there’s something right about making BARNABY FINCH happy.

He smiles too, laughing lightly about the sudden end of their short guessing game.

”Milotic.” One that has been called the most beautiful pokémon by many, one Mars is particularly fond of, and yet also one that does not suit him at all. For Martín del Mar is many things, but tender and prone to calming others he is not. Not with most people, at least. ”It was a Milotic.”

Admittedly, he has gained a whole new appreciation for the species after that experience, but before he can say as much, something in the bushes catches his eye, and he whistles for Fulgora to go have a look for him.

”I imagined it would feel odd… alien… like not belonging somewhere, you know?” He answers Barnaby’s question just as Gabrielle leaves his side to go deal with an Abra, and his gaze falls upon the journalist. ”It didn’t. It was oddly… normal. And also not, like some things weren’t as they should be.”

It’s difficult to explain, even for him, and once more it’s the bushes that distract him: this time thanks to the sight of the Zeraora plucking a small Buneary from amongst the foliage. It struggles, but there’s little it can do when in the feline’s grasp.

As Gabrielle trots over with a sleeping ABRA in her mouth, Barnaby decides it's probably time to capture some of the Pokémon that have accrued around him. It doesn't take much more than a moment or two for the WOOBAT, MIME JR., and ABRA to be dealt with and given Luxury Balls of their own.

Just as he finishes, however, a whooping call rings out from a nearby tree, drawing his attention away from Martín del Mar. There, stark white against the green canopy, was an ORANGURU - apparently upset by something. Perhaps it had been awoken from a nap and disliked their intrusion upon it's territory? Whatever the case, it's furious cries were grating on Barnaby's nerves.

"Go take care of it." He instructs his FLYGON, having been newly released from it's Poké Ball.

Finally, Barnaby turns back to the ROCKET admin. "Milotic, hm?" He's immediately reminded of the Pokémon's inherent beauty and grace, which seems fitting for someone like Martín del Mar. "What sort of powers did you have? I'm guessing the ability to breath underwater?" Barnaby mused before continuing, "I wonder why Milotic of all Pokémon?"

The conversation continued with talk of navigating alternate dimensions. Barnaby was surprised to hear that it had felt relatively normal within the Tree of Life, at least in Mars' opinion.

"What things felt out of place?" He was genuinely curious. Did the laws of physics bend and shift in other dimensions? What fantastical things were possible outside of their plane of existence?

”Breathe underwater? Hmm… Probably. I didn’t get a chance to try.” Which, in retrospect, is somewhat of a shame, because swimming when in such a state would have surely been an amazing experience. Too bad the dimension within the Tree of Life was merciless, and it sure didn’t allow for such leisurely moments. Still, summoning waters and SURFING on his Blastoise’s back while having the abilities of a Milotic had been pretty damn great.

”I could use most moves a Milotic can learn. Things like that. The Life Dews proved to be pretty helpful towards the end.” He had helped with healing Rocket’s injured more than a few times, which also in retrospect is somewhat surprising, considering Mars tends to be someone who puts himself first. That had still been the case, of course, but as an admin it’s his duty to look after Rocket’s forces, is it not? As per usual, Mars takes his job seriously, regardless of which one it is.

His Unown seem to notice something in the distance then, and when he looks that way, Mars sees a Bewear wandering among the trees. Sighing, he whistles to get the Symbol Pokémon's attention, because the last thing he needs is to have them provoke a stupidly strong bear.

”It’s hard to explain. The fact that it seemed like there was a whole world inside the tree, for starters… and another tree of life, actually. There was a bamboo forest and gigantic pokémon, and the ground would swallow up blood as if it were thirsting… That may have worked to our detriment later on, actually.”

He’d rather forget the whole blood clone part of it, honestly.

Before Barnaby could respond, a hint of yellow peeking out from behind a nearby tree caught his attention. He paused, turned his head, and noticed the telltale signs of a long mustache unable to hide within the margins of the tree. With an ABRA already having been in the vicinity, Barnaby surmised the identity of the Pokémon fairly easily.

"Gabrielle," He called out, beckoning her over with his voice while a hand was waved to draw his FLYGON closer.

"Sneak around back and Hypnotize that one," The faintest of gestures was given toward the ALAKAZAM, as not to arouse suspicion. "Then hit it with everything you've got."

With their orders given, the two Pokémon skulked away to execute them. Meanwhile, Barnaby turned back to Mars.

“Honestly, I’m a little envious.” Not of the likely traumatizing experiences they’d endured within the Tree of Life, of course, but the thought of having Pokémon-like powers was incredibly enticing.

“Another tree?” A world within a world. Mind-boggling. “And the ground absorbed blood? Why?” How unsettling… Barnaby was about to say as much, but was cut off by the sound of approaching boots.

The figure of Barnaby's cameraman, Tomás, eventually came into view.

“Sorry for interrupting, boss,” He apologized, hand on the back of his neck while slightly bowing his head toward the two other men. “But if we want to make it back to town on time we need to start heading out soon.”

"Oh... a shame." Barnaby sighed, his gaze falling on the form of Martín del Mar draped in the comfortable glow of a setting sun. He didn't want to leave, but figured he'd overstayed his welcome by this point.

"We'll have to continue another time, Martín." An opening for further interaction in the future, spoken just as Gabrielle walked up, dragging the unconscious body of an ALAKAZAM behind her. It was quickly secured in a Poké Ball, as were all of Barnaby's other Pokémon. "I'd like to hear more about your pursuits into the incredible."

He smiled then, cobalt eyes meeting amber as they were so drawn to do, before waving farewell.
