"Right around here is where I found it, originally." They were trading information; Adrian felt a little better about Martin after encountering him in a few of Slateport's contests, as well as their performance in the Tree of Life raid. Although his relationship with Rocket wasn't always amicable, and he was slow to trust... Martin was beginning to make an impression on the hotheaded upstart.

That and they had something he wanted, regrettably.

They're both standing in a clearing in Petalburg Woods, Adrian being followed closely by a highly unusual 'Stantler' that he had taken to affectionately calling 'Weird deer' instead. That name was going to stick at this rate.

There was nothing spectacular about the area so far as either of them knew, but to the Wyrdeer it shimmered with potential, the stygian orbs on the stubs of its antlers vibrating gently as they attuned with the flow of space-time. Now they were in for it, these two.

HNN had called them distortions, spatial phenomena, but what does that really mean? What exactly is being linked to Hoenn through these rifts? Where are these strange pokémon coming from? Too many questions, not enough answers.

Given the nature of things, it all makes him think of all those words that won’t leave his head ever since making it out from the Tree of Life.

The Unown Report.

”Yeah, I found my Braviary near here too…” Could it even be called a Braviary? The huge bird of prey flies overhead; larger than any Braviary he’s ever seen, of dark feathers, and with a mask of azure flames to cover its face. It’s still not particularly friendly, but at least now it’s tame enough to follow along with them.

Honestly, it’s almost inevitable that it’s the two of them with their weird new pokémon, their common interest always seeming to push them together into this sort of situation.

”You sure that’s a Stantler, by the way? I guess the antlers are kind of similar…”

While barely noticeable, as they walk, a strange static fills the air, bringing with it a somewhat familiar feeling…

"The antlers are a bit off, but the muzzle looks spot on." He was confident enough in the assessment. If the shoe fits, the shoe fits, there was no getting around that. Adrian wasn't about to let himself sink into some Ship of Theseus conundrum. As they're walking around however, his Wyrdeer begins to look around suddenly, like prey alerted to a predator's scent. It halts their forward procession.

It snorts and stamps its feet impatiently, and Adrian is no stranger to the signs of a skittish pokemon.

"What is it...?" By now a strange humming begins to fill his ears, and he turns to look at Mars for a moment, like, 'Are you seeing this shit, too?' before markedly observing:

The Wyrdeer was concentrating a massive aura around the orbs of its antlers, and although it teemed with power, it was more the gentle complexity of its machination than the sheer power that perturbed him.

"I think it's attuning to... something... Yow!" A hand reaching out to the Wyrdeer would receive a shock, as if the air around them was dry and producing static, almost reminding him of the mild inconvenience during Sinnoh's wintry season. But why here and now, he wondered?

The oblivious answer would be to suggest it might be that the Wyrdeer was an Electric-type, but suddenly the seams of reality seem to flicker with unseen strain, as they find themselves in a bygone age surrounded by stranger seasons yet... Something has gone wrong. Looking back to Martin, he fumbles to make an educated guess.

"...Did it just detect the distortion before it...?"

Something’s definitely up with Adrian’s Stantler, but before they can figure out exactly what that is, it’s their surroundings that change drastically…

The dome appears, and they find themselves within the confines of its iridescent membrane. The scenery is different but not unfamiliar, as if it were something he should recognize from somewhere. But, where?

”It might have… They could still have a connection to these distortions? Iyona and I are almost certain my Braviary is Psychic type. Who knows, your Stantler may be too…”

Just as he says this, the bird of prey circling overhead lets out a loud screech as if warning battle cry, and this comes followed by a roar that sounds way too close for comfort.

”Fuck… Let’s get out of here before whatever that is finds us. Last time I stepped into one of these I ran into those pokémon from the Tree of Life’s bamboo forest.”

"Really?!" So there was an assocation between the events of that night and the spatial distortions popping up all over Hoenn. He couldn't help feeling a bit responsible.

But more pressingly...

File that under shit he didn't want to deal with today, and with even fewer people to rally behind. Rather than hoof it on foot, he climbs atop his Weird deer, throwing a leg over its back before sidling up to get situated. Whatever it was that had their scent, it was best the pair get a move on.

He felt guilty leaving Mars on foot, but he wasn't too confident it could bear both their weight, so he wouldn't dash off without them. Wyrdeer seemed less distressed by whatever the noise's source was, although whether that spoke to its resilience or resignation to whatever happened, he couldn't be too sure. Again, they hear the gutteral cry of some pokemon in the distance.

Just keep trotting, just keep trotting...

"...Do you think we can take it?" Neither of them had been with their newly acquired companions for long, so it was a tough call to make. Were they up to the challenge?

An eyebrow is raised when seeing Adrian jump onto his Stantler, but it’s not like Mars can really blame him for it. Every man for himself and all that, right? He wouldn’t have it any other way.

The problem is that there’s no way in hell Mars can get a ride from his Braviary at this point in time. In fact, it doesn’t even cross his mind. Boreas likes him well enough and even listens to him, but the bird of prey is still too fierce and too distrusting to let anyone too close for too long – even Mars.

Thankfully, the admin isn’t stupid enough to just have one pokémon with him, and it’s out of a Luxury Ball that his ever-reliable Rapidash that is released.

”Probably, but do you really want to find out?” He climbs onto the horse’s back, violet flames completely subdued as a symbol of trust. And, as they ride, he looks ahead, squinting at the landscape before them. ”Do you see the edge of the distortion?”

Another roar, another screech, and Boreas swoops down to slow the wild creature pursuing them, aura-enriched wings cutting through anything in their way.

Neat bird, he considers quietly while it keeps the local wildlife from harrying them further, its wings saturating with an unworldly glow. I want one of them for myself.

Adrian doubted Mars would part with theirs easily, so he'd just have to keep an eye out for it at a later date. When they weren't unwittingly trapped in one of these distortions.

"Maybe?" If they succeeded it'd be a weight off their shoulders... he wasn't going to afford much thought to the alternative, but he could always leave it as a last resort if it came down to it. "Fuckin' hell, it's like there's swarms of pokemon everywhere..." Almost as if the wildlands and the feral species were yet imposed upon by the human species, not that he'd make such insights by himself.

"No, not really." Though he might have a means to try and discern an exit, it meant straining his eyes uncomfortably.

Looking ahead he could only see the biosignatures of pokemon roaming freely, not the far edges of the spatial distortion, but that wouldn't stop him from continuing to try. As he sweeps along the horizon however, something burns an image into his retina: A fiercely red aura...

Jeez, what is that...? Is that really a pokemon?

He's stunned for a moment but he tugs at Wyrdeer's hair, urging it to divert its course. Pressing the heel of his palm against his eye, Adrian expresses mild alarm: "Let's not go that way... something's not right." Not by a long shot.

Whatever it is that Adrian may see thanks to the Yveltal’s gifts, Mars is not privy to it, but he doesn’t need to see it himself or to know the full details to notice the mild alarm in the avatar’s tone. And, if it alarms him, then yes, it’s better not to go that way.

”Alright, guess that only leaves us one option…” Directing his Rapidash to follow along in their new course, he whistles to get the Braviary’s attention, the sounds of a fierce battle ringing behind them. Another Luxury Ball is retrieved from his pocket, and this time, it’s an Unown that he summons into the distortion.

”Can you lead us out of here?”

Surely, out of all pokémon, an Unown would know how to find its way out of this sort of rift. After all, how often is it that they have guided him?

"Wish I'd brought more of my pokemon along." Feeling useless didn't suit him, especially when he typically had the right pokemon for every occasion available at the touch of a button. Something he'd learn not to take for granted.

Hooves clip-clop against the hardening earth as they traverse the mixed terrain towards their exit. Hopefully.

He'd have to bite back the bile and suffer through it. It was better than neither of them being prepared. Adrian follows after Mars patiently, though skeptical of the Unown's ability to cooperate. Often they seemed to act by some unknown methodology, almost like they had some sort of OCD and development disorder. They only seemed to respond favorably to him when circumstances were dire.

Then again, they weren't exactly smooth sailing right now.

Raising a hand to his brow as a visor, he stares into the distance against the glare of the sun. "Well...?"
