They would have to test a few approaches somehow, emulating the methods of the Unown assassins as best they could. Little did he know they had a carbon copy, but that would be a revelation for another time. For now, his Ekans became the center of attention to a few curious pokemon calling the mountain home.[break][break]

A hostile aura pervaded the area as he became woefully bored by the present pokemon, which would flee rather than understand the intentions of this freak of nature. After intimidating the wild pokemon, he turned his attention towards Ekans: "Can you use your spotlight up ahead? I want to see what's up there."[break][break]

He was still getting used to the idea of a snake with a flashlight. It didn't quite feel real to him yet.

That is, perhaps, the one constant in this endless search for answers of his; that the questions he cares for the most, the ones that consume him, are never the ones with answers that come easily. The truth about the Unown Report won't be reached easily either, that much is obvious by now. But, are they even searching in the right places to begin with?

Mars watches Adrian’s glowing Ekans and the way it seems to attract wild pokémon, and as it seems only natural for him to do, his mind makes connections.

Turned out it was still runnin' dry. They encountered another Honedge, possibly the same one from earlier, and an otherwise unaccompanied Smoochum. Was there a mother figure nearby? Taking a moment to check, Adrian didn't see anything out of the ordinary, and seeing as neither trainer had a marked interest... They let them go. "Bummer."[break][break]

"At least we can see the path." If it dipped, bended or something obstructed the path, they would know well ahead of time, which if nothing else was convenient. He supposed he could just as easily bring a torch, though.

While there are most definitely a few pokémon that would do well at ILLUMINATING their surroundings, the Ekans’ presence proves to be practical to the pair, especially considering that caught up in thoughts of the Unown Report as he is, Mars would have probably stumbled by now if it weren’t for the pokémon’s light.

”I think it’s useful.” Hopefully, it’ll also help them spot any Unown if the ever so elusive Symbol Pokémon decide to show themselves, but when it comes to them, Mars really can do no more than that: hope.

For someone who'd gotten used to Hoenn's eventfulness, it was almost disappointing, but there were interests that he could now afford the time to pursue. He'd gotten the chance for a few outings alongside Rowan, and what's more is he'd challenged another gym leader, Beau Fontaine. So it wasn't like he wasn't making good use of the time...[break][break]

Still, it paled before their usual undertakings.[break][break]

"I've been thinking of going to Johto, to see the Ruins of Alph now that I've completed my collection." It might've been a bit optimistic to assume it might reveal something to them, and yet, he couldn't help but want to test out his theory. If nothing else, it wouldn't be a wasted trip if they could wrangle one more Unown for the Report.

Quiet usually means calm, after all. No trouble. But, then again, to a man like Mars, no trouble is often as if the calm before the storm. It unsettles him. It makes him wonder if something terrible will happen soon. Just like he has wondered as of late…

It’s the mention of the Ruins of Alph that causes him to pause, however.

That might just be possible, considering the Ruins of Alph have undoubtful significance when Unown are concerned, but that’s almost as if going to the Spear Pillar in the hope of meeting Dialga. Is it really worth a trip to Johto? What does Adrian hope to obtain when visiting such a place? It’s here that the Unown Report was given to them, and that the assassins are appearing…

These pokemon had been harnessed, exploited in ways that trainers from their world couldn't yet hope to achieve. On the surface they were simple pokemon, yet they operated on a mysterious paradigm. And until they learned something of how they operated, and how to influence their actions beyond ordering the attack or making blind requests, they would never know the principles of how their abilities functioned; or how the hive mind ticked.[break][break]

"Either I learn something, or I get to see one more of the worldly wonders before everything's returned to dust." Adrian wasn't exactly the image of optimism, but he wasn't being genuine with the ambiguity of his visit. Adrian intended to try and find something that would help their cause, and should he find nothing more than dusty scripture, it would surely dampen his spirits.[break][break]

"I consider it a win-win situation." Either he found something that'd help, or he could say he got to enjoy the time he was given. And in a bizarre third case scenario where the Unown abducted him into their strange realm, as had been reported during previous explorations, then maybe he'd survive the craziness that was to come.

Unown have been recorded to appear countless of times, at countless places, throughout history. Signs of their presence, artwork and writing where their forms are used as an alphabet, and so much more than that – so many ways in which they have left their mark. Often mentioned, yet still a mystery nevertheless.

On most days, there’s nothing Mars wants more than to understand Unown; than to fully comprehend the way they are, know their abilities to their trust extent, and above all else, learn why is it that he has this strange connection to the Unown Report and perhaps even to the Symbol Pokémon themselves.

That part of him, the part that wants to know, wishes he too could visit places like the Ruins of Alph. Another part of him, however, the pragmatic and often all too logical one, tells him that here is where he should stay. In Hoenn. The bank needs him as its CEO, Team Rocket needs him as an admin, and with the looming threats the Lake Guardians had spoken of, the constant assassin presence, whatever the 'Dark Triad' is, and the meteor, there’s no way he could just go on such a trip.

Especially if not fully certain that there will be something valuable to gain from it.

Adrian Malcolm, however, is in a much different position than him.

”Hm... Sounds like a fun vacation. I hope you find what you’re looking for.” Mars tells him, and as he does, his gaze falls upon a Duosion that wanders among the trees. It certainly isn’t what he is looking for, but he still feels compelled to catch the Mitosis Pokémon. It’s why an Espeon is called out from a pokéball.

”Octavian.” It’s not a greeting but an order to act, and once the feline lays amethyst eyes upon its target, a SHADOW BALL is formed and aimed towards it with precision.

Derek Hoffman had also crossed his mind, if only because he came from Johto and should be able to help him find his way around with ease, but he and Mars were more invested in the research than most others. Adrian took an obsession with collecting the symbol pokemon to understand their distinctions, and Mars meditated on the meaning of the various Unown reports already discovered.[break][break]

”Me? Ha.” As they talk, Mars’ gaze falls upon an Espurr that wanders out of the bushes, likely lured closer by the light produced by Adrian’s Ekans. Adorable, yet still far too young to display the clear gender differences of its evolved form. If he had to take a guess, he would say it would probably evolve into a blue Meowstic… Much alike his own, and also much different from the one that often aids him with some of his more gruesome Rocket work.

Of course he plays along, smirking as he does so. The fact of the matter is that it’s not about the desks but about the work he can’t leave behind – about the things that might happen while he’s off exploring some admittedly quite interesting ruins.
