[attr="class","monlyrics"]Dark deeds are best done by night.
[attr="class","monbody"]Twilight was just falling as Aurelie made her way through the unfamiliar streets of Slateport City's Lower District, surreptitiously checking her watch and then rereading the directions she'd been given to the delivery address for her most recent order of hand-forged knives. One day, perhaps, the Iron Lady Forge would be able to afford to use a delivery service or even hire a delivery driver to transport the finished blades to faraway customers, rather than having the proprietress hand-deliver them herself. Today, however, was certainly not that day.

Besides, the particular order she was hand-delivering today was unusual enough that she wanted to keep a close eye on it, for now. Despite the warm summer evening, Aurelie felt a shiver of excitement and trepidation traveling down her spine over what she carried. Within the simple briefcase she held was her very first special Rocket commission: a set of knives to be used not as simple cutting tools, but as weapons in combat, meant to maim and kill with every stab and stroke.

To be sure, it wasn't Aurelie's first time making combat knives. Nor was she new to forging swords, stilettos, punch daggers, or other weapons. And she certainly hoped it wouldn't be her last.

From the look of the man who had strolled into her workshop to place the order, she rather doubted it would be the last time he ordered something from her. Well, had certainly seemed suave and charming enough when he'd introduced himself and hinted that he sought something sharper than the mundane tools she normally advertised. From the way he spoke, he was clearly a man who knew his knives very well and knew exactly what he wanted out of them in terms of size, weight, sharpness, and build specifications. That, at least, was something that Aurelie could very much appreciate in a customer.

The red-haired bladesmith gulped as she approached the apartment building listed in her directions, looking over the levels of stairs and rows of doors to find the right apartment number. She forced herself to walk smoothly and smile casually at people she passed along the way, trying not to look as if she were in a hurry or trying to hide anything. Once she reached his door, she got a firm grip on the briefcase and knocked sharply.

Hopefully he's in there, she thought, her single eye narrowing, and hopefully he likes what I've made for him.

Standing in front of his bedroom mirror, Zev buttoned up the collared white shirt he always wore on client jobs. Donning the shirt, along with his customary black tie, suit, and gloves, always felt like taking off a mask — or, perhaps more accurately, shedding his outer skin. As he tied the silk tie around his neck, he practiced a smile. The correct muscles of his face moved, but the smile never touched his dark blue eyes, which stared back at him with an indifferent coldness that he knew disturbed normal people.

Well, it didn't matter that night. Not for Zev, and not for the man who was going to die.

A knock at his front door interrupted the hitman's thoughts. "Go see who it is," he said aloud, the usual friendly tone of his persona gone and replaced with a steely callousness.

Upon receiving the instruction, his Gengar, Smoke — previously unseen — floated out of the nearby wall and drifted toward the door. Zev strolled after the Pokémon, expecting to need to put the mask back on for his guest. Smoke stuck the front half of his body through the door, giggled in his creepy ghostlike way, then popped back into the apartment, arms waving with delight. Decades as partners meant Zev understood the nuances of the Pokémon's body language and gestures. Smoke's continued good humor indicated that the person on the other side was an ally, inconsequential, oblivious.

Zev opened the door and instantly recognized the bladesmith from Iron Lady Forge. Someone he'd heard Team Rocket could depend on. His face broke out into an easy grin, made easier by the fact that he was actually pleased by her visit.

"Oh!" he exclaimed as he slipped on the mask. "Miss LeFevre, right? Wow, that was a fast delivery. Come in, please!" He opened the door wider and stepped to the side so she could enter. "And please don't mind Smoke. He likes to spook visitors."

[attr="class","monlyrics"]Dark deeds are best done by night.
[attr="class","monbody"]When the face and upper body of a Gengar suddenly poked out of the closed front door of 's apartment, Aurelie let out a surprised yelp and gripped her briefcase even tighter, as if for reassurance. The red-haired bladesmith managed to regain her composure and smooth her expression by the time the door swung open, though she privately wondered if she still looked a bit wild about the one eye at first. Relaxing her tight grasp on the briefcase handle, she returned Zev's friendly grin with a warm smile of her own, though she couldn't help noticing that—much like at their first meeting at her workshop—his grin didn't quite reach his eyes, which remained as cold and pale as ice.

Now, much like before, the first thought that sprang to mind was, I'm glad this man is on Rocket's side, because I'd be scared to go up against someone who looks that... emotionless.

"Good to see you again, Mr. Harcourt," she replied, keeping her tone light and easygoing. "It's always a pleasure to provide top-quality service to exceptional customers like yourself with a need for more unique and specialized cutlery than an ordinary civilian would use. Spooky Gengars notwithstanding," she added with a wry chuckle, noticing the Pokemon lurking nearby.

Taking a deep breath to steady herself, Aurelie walked through the door into the apartment and set her briefcase on top of a table. Undoing the clasps, she flipped open the briefcase and unfastened the top panel to reveal a hidden compartment, containing two long, slender combat knives. With a flourish, she turned the briefcase so that the blades caught the ambient light, gleaming with a lustrous mirror-like sheen.

"The combat knives you commissioned, as promised," the red-haired smith declared, a hint of pride creeping into her voice. "Both blades are forged from high-carbon steel with a slight recurve and a drop point for effective slashing and stabbing. Both blades have been edge-tempered, which means they're tough and flexible while still able to hold a razor-sharp edge. The spines are detailed with extensive serrations, as you can see, so you can use the knives to saw through things as well. Plus, serrated edges add a nice intimidating touch, don't you think?"

Warming to her subject, Aurelie continued, "The handles are constructed from a highly durable synthetic material that's extremely resistant to wear, breakage, or corrosion. And they're contoured with finger wells to fit comfortably in your hand, so the knife will be secure when you grip it and won't inflict accidental damage or discomfort when you're using it. After all, the pain from a knife should only go one way, right?" She flashed a brief, knowing smile.

Reaching into the briefcase, she pulled out four items: a small block of solid wood, a sheet of paper, and two black suede sheaths. "If I may demonstrate," was all the warning she gave before taking one of the knives, expertly waving the blade from side to side to test its weight and balance, and slamming it hard into the block of wood again and again. Several chips of wood flew free, and Aurelie held up the blade for inspection, showing not a single nick or chip on the blade's edge.

Next, she lifted the piece of paper, holding it between two fingers, and sliced downward with the knife. The knife sliced cleanly through the paper, with no jagged tears or shreds hanging loose. She nodded to herself with satisfaction.

"The sheaths come free of charge," she added offhandedly, still moving the blade through the air idly in small, precise strokes. She met Zev's eyes with a brash smile bordering on a smirk. "I can guarantee that whatever use you put these knives to, they'll do exactly what you want them to, every time. They won't disappoint. Ever."

Zev followed the woman to the table, taking care to stay out of her personal space even as he peered into the open briefcase and laid eyes upon the knives. His smile slowly twisted into a grin of genuine delight as Aurelie rattled off the weapons' characteristics. And he knew she was not lying; he mentally ticked off the very same traits as she mentioned them.

When she picked up one knife for her demonstration, Zev's eyes followed her movements with laser focus. In a split second, he gauged how quickly he could subdue her if she turned the weapon in her hand on him. Not that he was concerned. Most people were harmless, passive, and wouldn't dream of attacking another person. With interest, he watched Aurelie test the knife first against the block of wood, then the sheet of paper. A rare feeling of satisfaction filled him at the impressive display.

Zev's gaze lingered for a moment on the way the woman continued to move the knife through the air — subconsciously, instinctively. Only someone with many hours of practice could handle a weapon with such expertise while idle. Then he turned his attention to the second knife still resting in her briefcase and picked it up. "Beautiful," he said softly as he held it up to the light, admiring its deadly curve and wicked edge.

Then he dropped the mask. Lightning fast, he snapped his arm forward, stabbing the knife into empty air (safely away from Aurelie's direction, of course) and executing what would be a killing blow to an adult male target. Snapping his arm back, he effortlessly switched his grip on the handle and slammed the knife downward, imagining it sliding into a neck just above the clavicle. He stopped himself mid-swing and fell into a fighting stance, most of his weight on his back foot, his grip on the knife changing once again to bring the blade forward. He threw some test stabs, his excitement rising as he realized the weapon was everything the bladesmith promised: perfectly balanced, weighted for his strength, comfortable.

Zev relaxed out of the stance and beamed at Aurelie, eyes bright. (He knew his smile was wrong in that moment, not because it was fake but because it was real, for once. He knew, yet he could not help himself. Because for him, she had done a very good thing indeed.)

"They're perfect," he said to her, his heart racing — not from the physical exertion, but from sheer thrill. And then, without thinking twice, he asked: "Would you like to see them in action? As a real test?" Then, as if remembering himself, he added, "Don't worry. You're not in danger. Rocket's paying me to clean up a problem, and I just thought," his eyes flickered to the way she held the other knife, "you might be itching to put them to use."

[attr="class","monlyrics"]Dark deeds are best done by night.
[attr="class","monbody"]Aurelie's mouth fell open when picked up the second combat knife from the briefcase and promptly performed his own, rather jaw-dropped practical test and skill demonstration with the knife, wielding it with such familiarity and proficiency that the brand-new weapon already seemed like a natural extension of his hand and arm. As the red-haired smith watched, dumbstruck, he stabbed and sliced the empty air with the intensity and focus of someone who fully expected to be using the knife on more than an imaginary foe. There was nothing superfluous about his movements. He shifted from one killing stroke to another and from stance to stance as efficiently and seamlessly as a machine whose every action was pared down to the absolute minimum necessary to do its work.

She remembered her earlier thought about being glad he was on Rocket's side and mentally amended it to I'm glad we're both on Rocket's side, because otherwise I'd have to be afraid that he might find someone to hire him to do that to me.

Even more disturbing than his demonstration, though, was the smile he gave her afterward. It was a ghastly sight. His lips were turned up at the corners and his eyes crinkled at the outer edges, so it fit the textbook description of a smile, but there was something about his eyes and the way his teeth were half-bared that made Aurelie want to reach up and shield her jugular with her hand. With an effort, she resisted the impulse, but she couldn't bring herself to smile back the way she had earlier.

And then his offer... By Arceus, was he serious?

"I'm glad you approve of the knives," she temporized. "I spent a lot of time making sure they fit your specifications exactly, so I'm happy you appreciated all my hard work. And I do always enjoy the few times I get to see someone using my knives in real life and putting them through their paces. But—"

Her thoughts were racing. Zev seemed to have made the offer in all sincerity, though she certainly didn't know him well enough to be able to tell if he might be lying or dealing in bad faith. But he seemed genuinely grateful for the good service she'd offered, and he'd been careful to be as unthreatening to her as possible. Then, of course, there was the fact that, while Aurelie knew how to use a knife well enough, she'd never done so in a high-stress situation, let alone in actual combat.

And yet, she had fought and hurt people before, even if it had been as an angry teenager with a handy forging hammer. And this was Rocket business, he said. And if she helped him, it might lead to even more blade commissions, and she highly doubted Zev was the sort of person who'd ask her to make kitchen knives.

No, if his display and his evident facility with using combat knives as a problem-solving method were any indication, he'd be asking for really interesting creations. Folding knives and switchblades, stilettos, claw-like karambits, throwing knives, maybe even a sword someday...

"Sure, I'd love to tag along," she said abruptly. "What's the problem you're supposed to be handling? Should I, uh, just be acting as your lookout or something?"

Zev had not been certain Aurelie would agree, so he relaxed his smile into something a little more reassuring and slid the knife he held into one of the sheaths she'd placed on the table. "There's a Rocket executive of the old guard lurking here in the Lower District, a certain Renart Toussaint," he explained, leaving her side to pick up a pair of black leather gloves from across the living room. All traces of whatever mania had seized him faded from his features as he slipped into strict professionalism. "The people in charge believe that this man still maintains loyalty to Blackwell, and that he's been sharing too much with the wrong people in an effort to undermine the organization. So he must be eliminated."

While speaking, Zev started collecting things from around the apartment: a miniature flashlight, a pocket crowbar, a plain black Rotom Phone, a small case, his wallet, his keys, several Pokéballs. Once everything had disappeared into his pockets, he pulled on a black suit jacket and strapped the sheathed knife to his belt.

"Hold onto that one for now," he said with a glance at the second knife still in Aurelie's hand. "You'll need it. Let's go."

As he led her to the front door of his apartment, Zev extended a Pokéball to the Gengar that still floated nearby. Without waiting for his master's command, Smoke entered the vessel, which Zev promptly returned to his belt.

The two humans exited his apartment and made their way down the side streets and alleys of Slateport's Lower District. Nightfall meant that the area was coming to life, large crowds starting to gather along the main thoroughfares where market vendors hawked food and wares. Zev guided Aurelie away from them. As they approached the tenement housing along the border of the Outskirts, the noise from the main streets dulled into mere background noise.

"He's holing himself up in one of these buildings," Zev explained quietly to Aurelie as they neared the side of one building. A rusted, wrought iron fire escape wound its way along the wall from ground to roof. The assassin pointed at one of the windows alongside the stairs. "Fifth floor. We'll go in through the window." He removed the small crowbar from his pocket and started up the fire escape. "Follow me. Quietly now."

[attr="class","monlyrics"]Dark deeds are best done by night.
[attr="class","monbody"]Tucking the second knife into its own sheath and hooking it to her belt, Aurelie followed behind as he wound his way through the Lower District's maze of back streets and alleys. Her heart was pounding, as her initial excitement and visions of artistic achievement gave way to a growing sense of anxiety and uneasiness about the task at hand. When he started climbing the fire escape, she hesitated for a moment before going up behind him, careful to walk slowly and move on the balls of her feet so her shoes didn't ring on the rusty metal surface. They would have made a comical-looking pair to anyone watching: him mounting the fire escape with perfect confidence, his gaze never wavering and steps never slowing, while she clutched the railings and forced herself to never look down toward the ground below. Zev had chosen the timing and location well, though; no one was watching them sneaking toward the fifth-story window.

Focus on the destination, the red-haired bladesmith told herself more than once, shivering despite the warm summer evening. Not on how easy it'd be to slip and fall and go tumbling over that railing three, four, five stories to end up with a broken neck— No, stop it! Just focus on the destination! Where we'll—we'll get in somehow? And then what?

Zev stopped abruptly on the fifth-floor landing, causing the preoccupied Aurelie to nearly careen into him. She stopped herself in time by grabbing for another railing, her knuckles white and her breath coming a little faster than she'd like. He merely held a finger to his lips and crouched down to avoid being seen through the rows of windows, stealing soundlessly toward the one where he'd indicated his target lived, and she nervously followed his lead.

Once they reached the right window, Zev risked raising his head just high enough to peer through the dirty glass. Seeing no one through it, he used his pocket crowbar to pry around the frame of the window. Much like the condition of the rest of the tenements, the window frame was badly maintained and poorly secured. It only took Zev a minute to pull the outer screen off, lever the window frame apart, and pry out the glass pane, leaving an empty opening that he slid through as nimbly as if he did this every day—which he very well might have.

I am going to invest in some good window locks after this, Aurelie thought, watching him. Really good ones, and maybe a window inspection on top of that. Shaking her head in admiration, she clambered through the opening behind him and landed on the floor of the apartment inside, dropping into a crouch beside Zev. Again, he held a finger to his lips, and she nodded in agreement.

The interior of the apartment was dimly lit and sparsely furnished, dominated by huge charts, diagrams, and maps hung on the walls, dotted with innumerable pins connected by strings, ribbons, and rubber bands in a rainbow of colors. A veritable who's-who of politics, finance, favors and debts, schemes and alliances, Aurelie had no doubt, but she had no time and no context to interpret any of it. She and Zev crept down the hall, searching for signs of the apartment's inhabitant, when at last they saw the thin lines of pale-blue computer light glowing around the edges of the door and heard the sounds of rapid typing echoing along the end of the hallway.

Aurelie's single eye moved to meet Zev's gaze at this point, her hand sliding toward the sheath on her belt to pull out the newly-delivered combat knife. She nodded at him in a silent request for him to go ahead and do whatever was needful with the delinquent Rocket member, while she watched his back. This was his world and his assignment, not hers. She'd made the knives; let him be the one to put them to use and to demonstrate just how well they functioned.

The fact that Aurelie kept up with his pace, remained carefully silent, and only hesitated once at the bottom of the fire escape impressed Zev. At the very least, she had a certain measure of courage and the ability to follow his lead without question — both useful in the event he needed an ally for certain operations in the future. The nervousness in her body language and on her face, however, suggested she might not have the stomach for what would happen next.

The door in front of them was open only ajar, and Zev could not ascertain whether the man inside the room faced the entryway or sat with his back to it. He quickly weighed his options. A desk in the way would give Renart Toussaint some defense and time to react. Jumping over a desk was not an option; it would leave Zev wide open to a counterattack. There was really only one possible path forward: let Toussaint come to him.

Zev pressed himself flat against the wall next to the door and motioned Aurelie to stay behind him. Then, staying out of the doorframe as much as possible, he reached over and pushed open the door, hard enough that it banged against the wall inside. The sound of typing immediately ceased.

"What the fuck?" came an older man's voice.

Zev waited and listened. He heard the following sounds: the scrape of wood against wood as the man stood up, slow and cautious footsteps, and the soft click of a gun being cocked.

Tensing every muscle in his body, Zev drew his new combat knife from its sheath. He focused on keeping his breathing measured despite the sudden adrenaline rush that flooded his veins, on the footsteps that grew louder as the target approached. He waited. And waited. And waited.

The floorboards at the threshold creaked. A gun slowly came into view from inside the room. Zev's free hand snapped forward, seizing the wrist that held the gun. In one fluid motion, he stepped inside Toussaint's reach, twisted the hand he'd grabbed so the gun pointed to the ceiling, and stabbed into flesh with his knife. The blade sank between two ribs, but too low: it punctured only a lung, not the heart.

"You—motherfucker!" Toussaint snarled, immediately grabbing Zev's wrist that held the knife and pushing it away from him.

Hands locked, they grappled in the doorway for what seemed like an eternity, Toussaint struggling to point his gun at Zev, Zev trying to wrench his knife hand free. Then Zev shifted his weight and smashed his foot into Toussaint's groin. A roar of rage and agony filled the room, followed by the clatter of the gun hitting the floor. Zev kicked it away down the hall, past Aurelie, then grabbed Touissant by the collar and aimed for the heart this time. But the other man wrenched himself out of Zev's grasp and started down the corridor after the gun.

"Stop him!" Zev snapped at Aurelie.

[attr="class","monlyrics"]Dark deeds are best done by night.
[attr="class","monbody"]Seeing how carefully, methodically approached the room where his target was sitting and swiftly strategized a way to lure out the target, rather than simply leaping into the room—which Aurelie privately admitted would probably have been her first impulse—impressed her with his logical thinking and thoughtfulness. Seeing him wait in perfect silence and stillness while the tension mounted and the target slowly emerged with weapon ready humbled her with his patience and cool-headedness under pressure, especially considering the cold sweat already breaking across her skin. Seeing Zev burst into sudden, stunning, brutal viciousness when he grabbed his target's gun hand with one hand while stabbing the man's chest with the other took Aurelie's breath away.

I am so, so glad to be standing next to Zev when he has a knife in his hands, she thought, rather than standing in front of him knowing I'm the one he's going to stab.

She had come prepared for a display of violence, but as she watched the two men grappling in the doorway, the dumbstruck Aurelie realized she hadn't been ready to witness a literal life-or-death struggle. Let alone to take part in it somehow. Blood was streaming out of the stab wound from the other man's chest; a small, analytical part of her was very pleased to see how the knife had cut deeply and cleanly into the man's flesh, inflicting the lethal wound as easily and smoothly as if it were cutting through hot butter. The two men's struggle was punctuated by groans and grunts of pain and effort, followed by an agonized scream when Zev kicked the man's groin. Aurelie gripped her knife nervously, unsure whether to hang back in case backup arrived, move forward to try grabbing the man's gun, attempt to circle around and stab the man from another angle, or just run away altogether.

It was only when the other man wrenched free from Zev's grasp and Zev shouted, "Stop him!" to her that Aurelie snapped out of her shocked daze. She could hardly believe the other man could even move with that deep stab wound in his chest. Yet, he still stumbled determinedly toward the gun skittering across the floor, and even in the dark apartment, she could see the murder in the man's eyes.

Taking one stride in the man's direction, she did what came naturally to her as a smith: not stabbing, not slicing, but hammering. When he bent down to retrieve the gun, she lifted the knife and brought the butt of the handle crashing down hard on the man's temple. The tough, sturdy synthetic handle material bashed into his head as solidly as any rock, and the man went down as if he'd been poleaxed.

Just to be sure, she kicked the gun further down the hall, causing the man to give a weak, frustrated-sounding moan. She smashed the knife hilt sharply against the back of his head, and he fell still. Her hands shook as she slowly reversed her grip on the handle so the blade was pointing downward, when she noticed the pool of blood forming upon the ground from his chest wound. Surely no one could lose that much blood and still live.

Aurelie looked back toward Zev questioningly, as if to silently ask, Is this enough? Is there any more?

Aurelie's decision to pummel their prey instead of deal a killing blow was not what Zev had envisioned, but he was used to adapting to rapidly changing situations. Thankfully, her aim was true and her strength enough to knock Toussaint to the floor.

Zev stalked toward the prone man like a famished predator. For a second, his gaze met Aurelie's and he saw the question there. She'd had enough, but Zev had to be sure. Kneeling over Toussaint's body, he pressed two fingers against the target's neck, checking for a pulse. Faint and slow. Toussaint was dying. People died swiftly from a punctured lung — four minutes on average.

It was enough. Zev waited out the last minute by wiping the blade of his new knife on the target's shirt and sheathing it. Then, with some effort, he flipped the corpse onto its back, careful not to step in the puddle of blood. The entire front of Toussaint's torso was drenched in his own blood. How many times had Zev seen a corpse? He couldn't count. It didn't matter. With an expression of indifference, he took out his phone and snapped a photo of the dead man's face, then a wider shot of the whole body. He sent these to his client, the one who'd contracted him to kill Toussaint.

"We should exit through the front door of the building," Zev said finally to Aurelie, phone still out as he waited for the reply. "Night's fallen now and we'll have plenty of cover heading back to the main streets. Let's get some food at the night market and pretend we're two friends grabbing dinner, at least until we've guaranteed no one's followed us from here, then you can get your briefcase from my apartment and head home."

His phone buzzed with the reply from his client confirming transfer of payment to his bank account. Zev took the SIM card out of his phone, snapped it in half, and pocketed the tiny pieces.

"Come on, I'll pay," he said as he headed for the door leading to the main hall and stairwell of the building. As he walked, he removed a new SIM card from the small case he'd brought with him and put it into his phone. Then he stopped in the doorway and grinned at Aurelie, once again slipping on the friendly, easygoing mask he usual wore. "I hope you're hungry."
