Aha. It seemed Elisabeth was starting to understand the nature of interactions with Zev's false persona. Her earlier confusion affected him not in the least, but whether people played along with his act or not showed him whether they were intelligent and discreet. He was sure Elisabeth was both, and her cottoning on proved him right.[break][break]

"Of course," he replied with a smile. "Drunk people entrust all sorts of secrets to their bartenders. What kind of reputation would Howling have if we didn't keep close guard over those? The trust of our patrons is something we've worked hard to cultivate, me most of all."[break][break]

"Are you, now?" The tone of her voice was teasing, potentially flirtatious even, if the listener wanted to imagine such interest in the woman. "Books are meant to be read and enjoyed, in my experience. I wonder how much you enjoy rereading yours."

Zev Harcourt didn't seem the type to be lulled by such pretty wordplay, however. She was sure that he understood the knives dancing between her words for what they were.

"You'd be surprised the things people say to their florists. The words whispered to the sick and dying, the sweet nothings murmured in love letters. I, too, know how to be discreet in that way."

A slow, self-satisfied smile curved her mouth upwards as she let her chin rest comfortably on her hand. The faint scent of the marigolds wafted from the vase sitting between them, delicate and sweet.

"If you ever find yourself in need of flowers for your mysterious woman, I can promise you the same client privileges that you offer me at Howling. As it happens, I think I'll take you up on the offer. Sooner rather than later, in fact."

Even if Zev were the type of man to be seduced by Elisabeth's flirtations, he had no interest in her. Their interactions were the quiet acknowledgement of two monsters who recognized each other for what they were. Between them was respect and understanding, even admiration. Elisabeth's confirmation about her own discretion confirmed such feelings.[break][break]

But both she and Zev were predators. Neither would be able to submit to the other. And so, ultimately, they were incompatible as lovers.[break][break]

The invitation to peruse her flower shop brought a smile to the man's lips. "I had thought to drop by since my chat with Cygne, but haven't found time yet," he admitted. A thoughtfulness came over his expression. "I'm not sure if my woman likes flowers. She's a bit… practical. But what am I saying? Every woman likes getting gifts."[break][break]

As if on cue, the head baker of the little pâtisserie emerged from the back room. She was a middle aged woman, her curly auburn hair streaked with silver, a flour-soiled apron tied to her front. With an apologetic smile, she interrupted the conversation of her two customers to inform Zev that she could, in fact, fulfill his request for space-themed, lemon-flavored macarons.[break][break]

He beamed at her, pleased that everything was going according to his plan. "That's great! Thank you. I'll need them on October 13."[break][break]

The baker wrote down his contact information and the due date, then retreated once more to her domain.[break][break]

Zev turned his satisfied grin upon Elisabeth and stood from his chair. "Well, I'm done here. I need to head back to Slateport, but definitely let me know when you plan to drop by the bar."
