There’s an active Space-Time Distortion in the area. Please evacuate.

As per usual, both Slateport PD and its rangers are dutiful in responding to emergency situations, but while they ask for citizens to evacuate over megaphones, the blond man who stands atop of the night market’s building plays the warnings no mind at all.

Casually, he walks to the edge, further into the night market. He stands on the ledge, he disappears, and he then reappears on the rooftop of the building that stands directly across the street. Easy. There’s an air of nonchalance to him.
[break][break]
While he walks, the only pokémon accompanying him is an Unown… and then another… and another. The further into the night market he walks, the more Unown that join him.
[break][break]
No one seems to notice him, being far too preoccupied with the hostile pokémon appearing beneath.

A space-time distortion was nothing new. Zev had encountered enough of them to recognize the telltale signs: the purple energy, the storm clouds, the lightning. Rain never fell during the distortions, yet he nevertheless found himself out on his balcony, taking down laundry he'd hung up to dry earlier that day.[break][break]

Despite being an assassin with amassed funds secreted away in various bank accounts, it was important for him to play the part of an average, middle class bar owner. That meant not owning a dryer.[break][break]

As Zev pulled down yet another white, button-down shirt from the clothesline, strange movement across the top of a nearby building caught his eye. His apartment was on a relatively high floor, affording him a view of the surrounding rooftops. And the view that time was as uncommon as the distortion itself: a blonde man teleporting his way across, leisurely, as if he were simply walking. Several small Pokémon floated around him, their number growing with every teleport.[break][break]

Curious, Zev grabbed the pair of binoculars he always kept just inside the door to the balcony and peered through them.[break][break]

"Mars?" he wondered aloud when he identified the man, though the Rocket Underboss was disguised as his persona, Tuesday. Zev considered leaving the other man to his own devices, but if he was present at a space-time distortion, then something interesting was surely about to happen.[break][break]

Zev summoned his Xatu in the flash of a Poké Ball's light. The world lurched around him as he teleported over, stepping into Mars' path. "Hey," the hitman said, one eyebrow raised. "Something happening?"

Naturally, he had anticipated the fact that someone might spot him, and that’s exactly why the currently disguised Zorua that clings to his shoulder is with him – keeping up the ILLUSSION that is Tuesday.

However, he had not expected that among all the people in Slateport City, it would be Zev Harcourt who would notice his presence on the rooftops of the Slateport Night Market.

”Zev. Lovely day, isn’t it?” Tuesday smirks. The static of the space-time distortion fills the air, and overhead the clouds swirl menacingly.

His Unown, a dozen of them by now, all turn to stare at the newcomer.
[break][break]
”Just wanted to try something out. You’ve heard about the wormhole that appeared here a few years back, right?”

When Blacephalon destroyed the night market on New Year’s Eve. Oh Hoenn, never change.

Lovely day. Zev tilted his head back to take in the sight of the open sky above them, with its dark roiling clouds and raw plasma illuminating the city in erratic flashes. "Nice enough, I suppose," he replied. His respect for Mars meant he could entertain small talk with the other man, even if he would rather not engage in meaningless behavior.[break][break]

Lowering his gaze back to eye level, Zev contemplated the dozen Unown that surrounded the Underboss. The strange Pokémon stared unblinkingly back at him, a silent audience, as if waiting for him to proceed.[break][break]

"I remember it. I was living at a different apartment at the time, so thankfully I wasn't this close to the Night Market."[break][break]

The memory of year-end festivities erupting into mass chaos resurfaced in his mind. He had never seen anything like the wormhole before; Hoenn's strange phenomena never happened in Kanto. Only an active warzone matched the destruction Blacephalon had caused in a matter of hours.

”At least real estate near the night market got cheaper after that, right?” Is that a joke? Gallows humour? Apparently, because the blond’s smirk doesn’t fade at that moment.

It does when his attention turns to his Unown, though. He watches them, as if looking for something, and then, eventually, he sighs in disappointment.

”I figured that maybe if there’s any remnants of wormhole radiation around here the Unown might react to it.” He explains even if Zev had not asked him to do such a thing. ”Guess not, though. Shame. We could really use a wormhole these days.”

He too had been living in Slateport when Blacephalon appeared, but in the upper district. It had been shortly after he had first moved to the region, and it had also been the reason why he decided to move to Mauville.

Then Mauville became a warfront in the Three Day War only a few months after that, because of course it did.

Mars glances down at the streets, and passingly, his gaze falls upon a food stall that has been temporarily abandoned by its attendant. A Kleavor approaches it.

"I can't say I agree, unless you want to pay for the restoration of my bar," Zev replied, imagining how much damage another Ultra Beast would cause if one were to appear again. The hitman lived near the heart of the Night Market now, and his bar was even closer. Even though Howling at the Moon was only his cover, it was a façade he needed, now more than ever.[break][break]

At the mention of food, Zev leaned one foot on the ledge of the roof and peered down the dizzying height. Any person would normally feel a spike of fear or vertigo, but neither passed through him as he watched the Kleavor scuttle down the street.[break][break]

Zev shrugged. "Sure, I could eat something. Xatu? Street level."[break][break]

His Pokémon called out a single note. The sensation of teleportation surrounded him again, and in the blink of an eye, he stood among the food stalls. Keeping an eye on the Kleavor, Zev waited for Mars to join him.

The cost of repairs may just be one of the biggest problems with being a business owner in Hoenn… or owner of any property in general. Mars remembers the countless meetings about the damage Ultra Beasts had caused the bank’s branches. At the time it had been annoying, but these days it’s among the things he had come to expect.

”I could approve a loan if that’s what you’re asking for.” He winks, always the banker. He’s teasing, obviously.

The topic shifts to food in the most casual of ways, and accordingly so, Mars teleports down to the street as if it were the simplest thing in the world. His Unown dutifully follow.

It’s then that he whistles a single note, causing one of the symbols to break from the pack and use its HIDDEN POWER on the Kleavor. This time, the attack shows itself as a pressurised stream of water that seems to be enough for the Axe Pokémon to stay away.

”Would you do it if you could, by the way? Go to Ultra Space?” The question is asked casually while grabbing himself some freshly grilled yakitori – a little burned by now, but it'll do. He actually leaves the appropriate amount of money on the stall too.

Xatu followed up the attack by Mars' Unown with a NIGHTSHADE. The Kleavor scuttled away in search of less aggressive prey.[break][break]

"I don't know the first thing about Ultra Space," Zev admitted as he took his own serving of slightly burned yakitori without paying. No one was there to accept the money, so why should he? The food would just burn and go to waste if he didn't take it. "Have we done much research on it?"[break][break]

By we, he meant Rocket, of course. Zev himself couldn't care less, unless it was somehow relevant to his personal goals.[break][break]

Instead of lingering at the food stall, the pair of humans and their accompanying Pokémon turned to stroll down the empty street. In the distance, an Ursaluna sniffed around another hawker's stand, undoubtedly lured by the scent of whatever was cooking.

The explanation is given calmly before taking a bite from the delightful yet still slightly burnt yakitori. He finds a seat, because Mars cares little for eating while walking. Lulu Flint and him may not be the greatest of friends (they’re reluctantly cordial, if anything), but he will always respect her as a scientist. She truly is one of the most brilliant people he’s ever met.

”Gavin has been. He’s not a fan.” That’s the understatement of the century, considering the way Cillian Quinn has spoken about his time in Ultra Space, but Mars is not about to go around sharing everything others tell him.

”Personally, I’m on the fence, but it may be the only way.”

The only way to save Hoenn.

His attention turns to enjoying the yakitori while watching the swirling of dark clouds in the sky. Their strength lessens. There is less static in the air. Strange pokémon stop spawning.

”Looks like the distortion is fading.”

Just a casual chat while chaos subsides.

When Mars took a seat, Zev did the same, sitting across from the other man. The sound of the Ursaluna breaking through the stall to reach its meal joined the peals of thunder as a strange background chorus.[break][break]

"It might be interesting to visit," Zev mused aloud after a thoughtful pause while he munched on his snack. He knew very little about the people from Ultra Space, the Megalopolans like Velmos. How much smarter were they than the average human? How much stronger and faster?[break][break]

How did his skills as a killer compare to their survival instinct?[break][break]

"If you end up going, give me a heads up, if you can."[break][break]

At Mars' observation, Zev glanced upward too and saw the distortion was indeed fading. But he saw no reason to leave just yet; he hadn't finished his yakitori. It was unlikely vendors and shoppers were going to return to their business quickly, either — not until the police and Rangers had confirmed it was safe to do so.

The saddest part of it all may just be that as soon as the Ursaluna is about to reach its meal, it disappears as if it had never been there to begin with. Only the destruction left behind exists as a sign of its fleeting presence. It makes Mars think of all the dimensions he has been transported to and then left, leaving behind only signs of his presence. As far as he knows, there’s at least four or five of them.

”Yeah? I’ll keep you in mind, then.” That one does manage to get a smile out of him, because Mars agrees: for all of its danger, Ultra Space also sounds interesting. A place he’d like to see one day.

With this thought in mind, he too continues to enjoy his yakitori, watching the distortion fade around them. There’s no reason to leave until they finish their meal. Afterwards, once it’s all said and done, both him and Zev can just go on about their days as if nothing had just happened. Truly business as usual.

Once finished with their meal, Zev stood from his chair and glanced around as the last remnant of the distortion faded from perception. The street, normally alive with throngs of pedestrians, was completely deserted except for him, Mars, and their Pokémon. The calm was eerie, and for a brief moment, Zev turned his gaze once more to the sky, as if expecting a wormhole to suddenly appear and drop another Ultra Beast on top of them.[break][break]

But the clouds had dissipated and only the clear blue of the late afternoon remained. No darkness or anomaly warped its pristine landscape.[break][break]

"Later, then," were Zev's only words of farewell, his head tilted toward Mars in acknowledgment before Xatu whisked them both away, back to the apartment balcony where his laundry waited.
