Josh's optimistic mind wandered beyond Julia's notion. "Even beyond the need to pick an Avatar. Don't get me wrong, it would be nothing short of awesome if Raikou picked me for that." Of course, that event would put him in even greater danger than being a simple Gym Leader. But to protect Hoenn and live his dream of shooting across the land at face-melting speeds, it was worth the risk. "But my inner dream doesn't require me to do that, or even to be the one that Raikou bonds with. That dream just requires me to know the person that he does pick. Right?"

As Julia went to check the window for the bright lights, Josh unmuted the football game to the announcer's words, "Touchdown Blackthorn!" He double fistpumped, the Johtonian team a kick away from taking the lead with under two minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Nimbasa did have all three of their timeouts left, giving them enough clock control to potentially win the game on their last possession. When Julia looked out the window, she would see the sun already on the horizon, the bright lights being an armada of ambulances and police vehicles' emergency lights. Something big had just happened.

"Yo! Blackthorn might actually pull this off!" Josh smiled. "Gonna stick around to watch the end of the game, or are you heading out?"

Awesome and maybe a bit scary, Julia thought. "That's true," she said. "I bet he'd still let you ride on his back even if you weren't his Avatar or something. Either way, you'd get to meet him." Someone as dedicated as Josh deserved that much, at least.

[break][break]Julia heard the game being unmuted as she looked out the window. Nice, Blackthorn got a touchdown! Outside, the sun was already sitting on the horizon, dyeing the city's skyline orange. The bright lights were from a fleet of emergency vehicles. "Huh," Julia said out loud. What the heck was going on?

[break][break]Josh's excited cheer broke her out of that thought. "Looks like something big just happened outside; those were emergency vehicle lights. I'll stick around, yeah! Traffic might be a bit crazy right now, anyway." She pulled up a chair next to Josh's bed to watch the end of the game with her friend. Whatever had happened would definitely show up on the news soon, and Julia could worry about it then.

It seemed Julia was still there to support Josh all the way. Little did the speed racer know what fortune that fate had in store for him. His dream was a lot closer than he thought, though it would not be in the way he envisioned it to materialize! Such was the nature of the gods' whims, after all.

"Right, it just looked like an aurora was all," Josh did his best to shrug, though it was hard to see, given how little he was supposed to be moving to allow his body to heal properly. "Thanks. The end of this game should be really good. If Blackthorn can get a touchdown on this drive, they'll win." He turned up the game's volume a bit to make sure they both could hear the announcer's excitement as the Johto team ran the ball downfield.

A celebratory cry came from Josh as his favorite team looked ready to score, but that celebration quickly turned to tension as the officials threw penalty markers onto the field. The ruling on the field broke the emotional man's heart.

"Intentional grounding, number 18, offense. Loss of down. By rule, there is a ten-second runoff, and the game is over."

Josh's groan grew into a grumble at the referee's announcement. "I swear, Julia, the ten-second runoff is one of the stupidest rules in football."
