the snail was still angry, and shadows flew around it, as though commanded by its wrath. among them, a ghost far more unsettling manifested. black cigar smoke wafted upward between mean eyes staring back at her.[break][break]

lulu felt the heavy weight and hot burn of hatred. no messing around, now.[break][break]

the summon of her patron was quickly answered. darkrai burst from the dark, claws outstretched and eyes aglow. dark void was flung towards the spirit, ballooning around it and dragging it down into a deep slumber. [break][break]

suddenly, like the other ghosts, the shadow that had been staring through her soul burst into a black cloud. another small, shadowy pokemon stood in its place.[break][break]

like Elisabeth Fiorelli , she was quick to reach for a pokeball.[break][break]

”it’s the pokemon i saw in the shadows last time,” she informed the rest of them. she was sure of it.

Valerian dashed towards the strange Pokémon with the orange eyes and shadowy body, but as soon as he reached it, it disappeared. Val growled as it reappeared above him, in the air. "So quick," Nomi murmured, surprised. Was it a ghost? Or some new type of Pokémon, as of yet undiscovered?[break][break]
Marshadow a voice seemed to murmur in her mind. Was it her own voice, a memory of something she had read? Or was it the voice of the creature itself, as if answering her thoughts?[break][break]
Whatever it was, it and the ruinous snail had attempted to trick Nomi in the most emotionally painful way. She would not let it escape now.[break][break]
Val tried sending a wave of PSYCHIC energy at his opponent, but the nimble shadow seemed to anticipate the attack, and was already gone from its previous location when the wave hit. It flitted about, easily dodging all of Val's attempts to subdue it. Nomi gritted her teeth, then rushed forward into the fray.[break][break]
"Use this," she said to Val, triggering the Tera Orb attached to her wrist. The shiny blue Sylveon began to glow, his fur crystallizing. A crown of dark roses appeared on his head. The Marshadow froze, as if enthralled by the transformation, which gave Val just enough of an edge to send a TERA BLAST of pure darkness straight at it. When the darkness met the shadow, there was a burst of energy - like a shockwave - that knocked Nomi back a few feet. Slightly dazed, she watched as the Marshadow fell to the ground, more solid than it had been before the fight. Its orange eyes twinkled, and Nomi recognized the hint of something new in its expression: it was impressed.[break][break]
"You're mine," she hissed, throwing a Pokéball. Her patience for illusions and mysteries had come to an end. The little shadow seemed to give it a moment's consideration, and Nomi had the distinct impression that if it had wanted to avoid capture, it could have. Instead, it merely nodded at Nomi, then allowed the flash of light from the Pokéball to engulf it.

"Marshadow," Elisabeth repeated, as if tasting the name for the first time. "What a strange Pokémon."[break][break]

Another SHADOW BALL met the Marshadow, which seemed to have been weakened by the first. Multiple attacks were exchanged under the cover of darkness, the two Ghost-types blurring in and out of perception before the mysterious creature appeared to dwindle before Elisabeth's eyes.[break][break]

Only then did her Pokeball find purchase, snatching its shadow into the depths of the red-and-white sphere.[break][break]

Her eyes flitted to the snail on the jubokko tree, watching them with silent judgment. The sight of it briefly froze her in place.[break][break]

"That one is different," Elisabeth said finally. "It feels... stronger than the others."[break][break]

Resentful, she almost added.[break][break]

What little help Xatu provided, was quickly overshadowed by Lulu’s next move. Some manner of strange creature, not unlike the tiny shadows or the Evil Snail, appeared, but seemingly under the command of Lulu.

It was powerful, even Morrigan’s untrained eyes could spot that much. And honestly it felt like she had seen it somewhere before. Perhaps a dream? Perhaps a picture somewhere. She did not know.

Still, for a brief moment she felt awe at Lulu, at the strength and capabilities she showed within such a short frame of time.

With Marshadow dealt with their collective attention semed to move to the snail.

The Evil vile Snail.

Morrigan did not like the look of it.

Xatu liked it even less. It’s eyes shimmered blue as it tried to send its psychic powers into the future with FUTURE SIGHT, hoping to gleam some manner of information about its intention as well.

her houndoom growled again beside her, attention focused on the marshadow as those around them homed in on their own. however, it didn’t seem on the offensive. not anymore.[break][break]

she watched carefully as it drew closer, drawn to the power displayed by darkrai, and to the human they had chosen.[break][break]

while others battled to take their own, she slowly retrieved a pokeball and neared. a shadowy hand raised towards it, and the strange pokémon was captured within.[break][break]

”interesting species. i’m curious to hear what you make of it, sato.”[break][break]

and with that, it was time to leave. this had been more than enough for one excursion.[break][break]

she turned her eyes towards the girl who had wandered into their camp.[break][break]

Nomi retrieved the Pokeball that now held her newly captured Marshadow, breathing heavily and feeling suddenly very weary. Hearing Lulu Flint's voice addressing her, she walked over to where the other woman was standing. The mist had cleared significantly; all of Nomi's companions - including the strange young girl who had walked into their camp - were visible now. Elisabeth Fiorelli looked especially captivated as her emerald gaze beheld the Jubokku. Perhaps the snail was still there. Nomi felt no desire to check.[break][break]
"I will be sure to write up a report on my findings," Nomi said in response to Lulu's comment. She, too, was curious. Marshadow was a Pokémon she had never seen or heard of before. A new species, indeed. Where there would normally be a raging fire of excitement, however, there was only a small spark on interest.[break][break]
She could still hear her parents' voices echoing through her mind. She suspected she'd be hearing them for some time after this.[break][break]
Was that what they really sounded like? She wondered. They'd left when she was a toddler. Certainly her brain had imprinted some vague memory of them into her psyche, but, illusion aside, this had truly been the first time she'd ever had a chance to actually talk to them.[break][break]
It had been a cruel and pointless conversation, in the end.[break][break]
"I'm ready to go," she muttered, mentally drained. She was tired of the Border and its hungry ghosts.[break][break]
