there was literally no possibility of anyone answering that question honestly with a clear yes. he lets out a chuckle in amusement.

"have you actually gotten a yes with that question?" he asks matias in jest.

he turns to elisabeth, trying to continue the conversation with her.

"oh, you did research. that's going to make this easier then."

he straightens his posture, though he doesn't get up much like matias did.

"wouldn't you connect them closer to the tree of life from sootopolis?" they appeared at the same time after all. "even if the distortion thing held weight, wouldn't the common denominator be the rift by littleroot? have you tried there yet?"

that's where the first tree of life popped up. it's also houses a rift that connects to one of the dimensions that function as one of the hotspots for adventures for hoenn populace.

It occurred to her in this moment she had always privately believed kyle lopez to be stupid; undoubtedly it was the man's fondness for dogs and supposedly easygoing reputation that had led her to such an assumption. What a time to have her biases challenged. Apparently the man moonlit as a fountain of Hoenn knowledge.[break][break]

Predictably, MATIAS SILPH focused on the other half of her explanation: the part that was emotional, not logical in nature. Oh, good. She could work with that.[break][break]

The blatant lie was coated in feminine anxiety for a much-cared-for individual, complete with wringing of her hands. It wasn't too difficult to do, really. She genuinely did care about the man, enough to be the one to free him from Rocket's captivity.[break][break]

She just shared Kyle's disbelief and incredulity that the professor had chosen today of all days to go researching. For all his intelligence, he surely lacked common sense.

he's met GIDEON GRAVES down there, but doesn't feel the need to mention it since he wasn't the subject of the conversation.

"if you're curious about the interdream zone, i guess matias can escort you around inside," he offers. "you two already seem close already anyways."

they do banter in a similar way as them. the forwardness of the further exchanges, initially thought as creepy by kyle, might just be some kind of weird inside jokes between them.

matias is the type to not have friends after all, so he might not have picked up the proper way to talk to them and this was the result.

Well. This had backfired spectacularly.[break][break]

On the one hand, she had evaded the Rocket suspicion that had darkened her arrival. On the other hand, she was now being returned to the place from whence she came, escorted by the man she least desired being alone with in all of Hoenn.[break][break]

This was an impressive achievement, all on its own.[break][break]

"I don't want to take valuable time out of your day," she began, taking a step back. The memory of this song-and-dance in her cottage briefly came to mind, and suddenly she very much did not want to lose the presence of kyle lopez. "And besides, you might not be in the best mental state to deal with something like the Interdream Zone. Given everything that's happened."[break][break]

She stared up at MATIAS SILPH meaningfully. When she spoke next, her question held unmistakable warning.[break][break]

"Do you think it's wise for you to be alone with me?"

the nature of the relationship between matias and the florist is still uncertain for kyle. he's merely speculating, though at the wrong direction. he's always gotten along with suspicious characters, so the difference escapes him.

he turns to elisabeth.

"eh, don't worry. thanks for worrying, florist, but it'll be fine. i have a sygna suit." he literally forced the nickname in his statement. "matias can go beat up any rocket we find. he's better than me at that anyways."

matias definitely doesn't pull his punches compared to kyle, so there's that.

Though she knew, with a sinking feeling, that they wouldn't have offered if they didn't find the cave boring to guard. This whole situation had tangled and worsened itself so much, Elisabeth bitterly regretted not simply battling her way through it in the first place.[break][break]

The underboss had discarded all of her Rocket communications and regalia in order to convince Hoenn's Elite Four and Champion that she was nothing but an ordinary civilian, leaving herself unable to contact anyone of importance about this shift in her circumstances. Arceus forbid a Rocket saw her and thought she was a prisoner of war.[break][break]

She had already fought kyle lopez, meaning she couldn't reveal some of her Pokemon in his presence without arousing his suspicion.[break][break]

And MATIAS SILPH already had tried to kill her both in her Rocket and civilian persona alike. Worse, she now suspected he wanted to add GIDEON GRAVES to his murder attempt counter.[break][break]

"I'm not sure where he is," Elisabeth continued, and this was admittedly the truth, "but finding him would be reassuring."[break][break]

Would she have to cry and fling herself in the arms of the man she had tortured a few hours ago? Possibly. She could do that, she suspected. Her acting skills surely had that range.[break][break]

Ideally, though, she could slip out of their shared notice before such an encounter began.

kyle shrugs.

"it's not like rocket can't just wait until our shift's done and get through later." he pulls out his phone. "but it's no big deal, really. i'm sure we can get a replacement easily."

he steps away momentarily and calls the logistics team of the league hq from his phone to issue their replacement for guard duty. what elisa said was basically a missing person report, and was a good enough reason to warrant him ditching his post.

When kyle lopez stepped away, she could feel every inch of her screaming in protest at being left alone with a man incapable of anything but trampling over her boundaries.[break][break]

Despite the implications of Matias's gentle threat, it glanced off of her as she peered up at him.[break][break]

"Is that your only explanation for the fact I'm uninterested in you, Matias?" she asked blandly. "I don't know why I continue to be surprised that you misread me, at this point, but here we are."[break][break]

he remains on the phone since the person on the other end of the line wanted to confirm details regarding the so called emergency. coming from kyle and his nonchalant tone over the phone, it does seem like an excuse.

he turns and sees matias getting friendly with the florist. they must be having a nice conversation, he thinks to himself.

when his eyes catch the florist's stare, he gives a little wave. maybe she's just worried about her friend and was getting impatient on getting stuff done, he thinks to himself.

he barely pays attention to the conversation over the phone as he keeps firing off the automatic responses just to expedite the appeal. the only thing going on his head is an imaginary conversation between the two.

"that man's a loser. i bet he's dead. how much for dead people flowers?" matias would say.

"don't be so crude. he is alive until we see his corpse. also, we can just reuse the flowers from your cancelled wedding," says the florist.
