Reality simply couldn’t keep up with them. These two idiots, consigned to their nature as warriors, warred with one another. Raged. Fought. Their fists spoke for them. Where words failed, actions would prevail. Navy howled. Raged. For a single moment, his right fist seemed to glow with a blue aura. It seemed less a hand and more a bear’s claw. Fighting spirit made manifest by this realm.[break][break]
He is pining under the light of a full moon, sad to be single on such a lovely night.[break][break]
He’s on Mt. Pyre, fighting for his life with Melody.[break][break]
He’s lost in a traffic jam, meeting Josh.[break][break]
He’s in a principal’s office, tendering his resignation. Hearing the principal beg him not to drop out.[break][break]
In a cave. On a mountain. High in the sky on a black dragon’s back.[break][break]

Kouji saw the sights change, felt it with his body with each strike that landed and threatened to take him out completely. It was still something he needed to power through, within this dream, within this nightmare, it was a definitely something that would come to an end. That thought alone, like the type he so commonly enjoyed, in this dream that struggled to come to reality, he felt the darkness seep off him; shroud his fist.

A heavy punch that broke through, sending them into a clearing, a demanding voice from the bunker that asked what he was doing here. The second heavy blow, through a door of a man who wished to conceal himself, and the third, a truly wicked blow. It landed with force, aimed straight for the solar plexus as he stepped into the man’s guard.

That shattered that home and straight into a secret base being overtaken by those in masks, as if looking to make it theirs. The punches that sailed at him constantly, like a surging waterfall, Kouji had no time to fall to them, he didn’t have the room for it. It was so…So…

It’s hard to breathe. His higher brain knows he should be focusing on what he’s seeing. There’s connections being built. Ideas. Notions of how he could build his files on Rockets after the battle is done.[break][break]
But what the hell does any of that matter? He’s thrown back. The air’s knocked out of him again. He falls to the floor. Koji stands tall above him. Proud. He’s a fellow warrior. That’s what they are. There are many kinds of trainers in the world. There are higher ideals. Great aspirations that drive trainers through the world.[break][break]
Standing up, Michael Navidson accepts the truth of his own nature. Detective. Brother. Friend. All of these are secondary. What he is, what he was even from a young age, was a warrior. It’s what Koji is, too. He sees it in his face. He feels it in the man’s fists.[break][break]
He fights because he has no choice but to fight. It’s what defines him. Not chivalry. Not heroism. Michael Navidson is simply someone who always has, and always will, fight.[break][break]

Watching his opponent fall back, onto his arse, Kouji only had simple thoughts in his head. He had never been the type of person to spend any particular time on any single thought, he lived by his gut, and only by his gut. What seemed right, what felt right, it was a series of instincts as if he were an animal capable of speech.

That was why stood there, waiting for his opponent to come towards him, his expression was blank, until the man had gotten up, stood on his feet. Kouji was surprised, beyond surprised even, something he hadn’t expected. Someone who would last as long as him, to push him this far.

”Hoooh. So you’re approaching me huh?” He said as he began turned side ways, bounced on his heel, and brought up his arms.

It seemed that his opponent simply had not had enough.

There’s a blood trail behind him. Navy’s hunched over. How his jacket hasn’t fallen off yet is anyone’s guess. It’s good for him that it hasn’t. It’s a jacket Gabe gave him. A memento his brother wants him to be remembered by. A mark of the bond they share, even across the boundaries of death.[break][break]
Navy’s lips, eyes, and expression betray no overt reaction to that question. He keeps hobbling forward. Despite everything, despite the power of those wicked blows, he presses on. That’s what it means to be human. That’s what it means to be a dragon. It’s what it means to be a warrior.[break][break]
“Yeah. I can’t kick your ass unless I get close.”[break][break]
And when he gets in Kouji’s range, Navy unleashes another series of blows. Surging strikes. One fist flowing into the next, like the movements of a dance. One leads into the other. A hand pulls back. A hand advances. The body comes together. A perfect machine.

Kouji couldn’t help but release his smirk at full power. ”Hah, then come as close as you need to.” He said as he stepped forward, to meet those surging strikes with his wicked blow. It was fast, flowing, and overwhelming, it was a series of attacks that struck at his core.

Kouji could respect that, the path and actions of a warrior, those who could only live life fighting. Society wasn’t made for people like him and Navy, he understood it, had accepted it, and left it behind. But the man across from him, he wondered just what were the shackles that kept him attached to it, to try so hard to fit into it.

Those were thoughts he didn’t need, and so he overwrote them with the will to harm, throwing those questions into his punch, a strike that pierced through the dense wall of those surging attacks, aiming straight for his opponent’s nose.

His nose is broken and he keeps fighting. Blood spurts down his shirt. It hardly slows him down. They’re running on empty at the moment. Their bodies surging with pure, raw fighting spirit. His hands glowing blue within this dream realm. It’s vicious, the way he’s fighting. He’s bleeding all over himself and not stopping.[break][break]
They’re back to the surge again. Weaving through reality. Up and down. Left and right. Careening through their memories with every punch thrown by every party. It’s back to the past again. Gabe walking along with a balloon. Navy having to go to the morgue to identify his body. Navy getting pushed back.[break][break]
Pushed down. Pushed up. Life tossing him every way, but he still keeps fighting. How can he not fight?[break][break]
If he backs down now, he loses.[break][break]
“Come on, Kouji! You can give me a better hit than thaaaaaaaaat!” He winds up the final of his torrent of punches, blue flames gathering around his hand. A figment born of a dream. Somewhere in the distance, a bear roars.

Kouji couldn’t even begin to explain just what parts of his body hurt, other than all of it. The swelling, the bruising, the bleeding; the wavering vision, the inability to breath through his bloodied nose, how every word he said came out in a gargle of blood. All of it was beyond description, but that was fine, he was never one for prose.

He was a man of punching, and he was being punched in return, as their surroundings only continued to shift, overlap, and change. He could see it, him being beaten, his siblings together, his siblings leaving, his growing, his ‘friends’ that he had abandoned time and time again, his father who he had left bloodied on his last night at home, the pokemon he stole, the pokemon he had raised.

The pokemon he had lost.

This was a nightmare all around them, and that nightmare coalesced around his fists, it was merely a byproduct, not a true fact but the dark feelings he felt were part of his fists, and he wanted to make sure that his opponent could feel every punch that he threw, every punch that he delivered completely, and so he threw it. With everything he had, Kouji threw his punch.

Their fists connect with one another. It an explosion of force all around them. Past, present, and every possible future cascade into a violent avalanche. The birth of a new universe. Stars being tossed around like children’s toys. All they have ever been or will be passing them by. Explosions of pure raw cosmic energy. Humanity coalesced down into those fists. Speaking from their hearts through the medium of fists. The punches to end all punches.[break][break]
Navy is thrown back. Laying on the ground. Recoiling from the pain. The world is swirling around them. They are under the sea once more. They punched reality back into something moderately approaching a correct shape, if only for a moment.[break][break]
It’s a punch that can actually make him stay down, if only for a moment. The hardest punch of his life. Navy’s dad never hit him like that. Navy goes out on a limb and assumes the same of Kouji’s situation. He lays there, in pain, trying to force himself to get up.[break][break]
His smile is a smile of respect. It’s hard to give anything less to someone who can throw a punch like that. They’d be remembered forever if someone actually saw that.[break][break]
“Man,” Navy praises as he struggles, “that was one helluva right hook.”

A barrage that made him see stars, Kouji ended up flat on his ass, looking at the skies themself for a moment, back into that sea, that absurd space. That was a great fight, his heart was beating out of his chest. ”You know my name, but I never got yours.” He didn’t respond to the call of a great fight, the old man he had been crossing fists with had one of his own.

Even so, he took in each breath as if his life depended on it, because it felt like it had, every single one was a gulp that his worn out body needed, his body low on energy and food all the same. It was something he hadn’t expected, to be drawn into something so big, so great, and yet.

They weren’t done, they could still speak and think, this was merely a lull, he tried to force himself upwards against the complaints of his body. ”For an old man, you throw way too many punches. I can’t even tell you what knocked me on my ass.”

“Nav, nay…” Navy finds it hard to speak his name. He was getting full sentences out, and now, at last, his words desert him. Navy does not stand. He’s on a knee. Leaning forward, like he’s a footballer about to go in for a tackle.[break][break]
“Navy.” That’s the only name that matters to him. He doesn’t care about being Michael. That’s the name his father gave him. Named after a warrior seraph of a long ago religion. A fitting name, but not his name. No, the name he wanted, needed, and claimed was Navy.[break][break]
Gabe gave him that name. Solidified his identity. That color defines him. All the best trainers have color names, or so his brother told him. What a silly childhood fantasy.[break][break]
“I guess being a, hack, detective has its perks. I picked up on it when we were beating the hell out of each other.” He wipes blood. With a sickening crack, he sets his nose straight. It hurts like hell, but he’d rather it set right. They’re going to be in the hospital for a long time after this shitshow is said and done.[break][break]
“What the hell did they tell you? Come on, sign up, there’s some good money in it for you?” He jokes.

”Navy huh? Same here, mine’s Kouji, it means yellow mix, bright name huh? Half Kantonian, Half Hoenian, my dad’s sure a bright one.” He said with a chuckle, it meant something different, but he had made that joke so often he couldn’t remember what the second character in his name meant an-, no he just didn’t want to remember.

”All the best trainers definitely do have yellow names…Or did, I can’t remember anymore.” He shook his head, spitting out a globule of blood as his words began to gargle once more, sitting down, his back as straight as it could be were it not for the wobble it had.

Still, the words snapped him back to reality. ”Sign up? Hah, I pretty much broke in and begged to signup. I’m not really the kind of guy that can fit in anywhere else you see.” This person across from him probably understood more than anyone else did, they had seen each other’s past.

But that meant something else too. ”Don’t tell anyone what you saw, I won’t do the same either. Guys like us don’t need pity.”

Kouji nodded, a simple deal with a simple premise as he let himself lay back flat; he could see a fight brewing, his stomach was still churning, his energy was still peaking even as his battery ran empty.

”A deal huh? You really are a dumb guy, only idiots make promises.” So that kid was dead huh? He should’ve expected tha-, no he might’ve seen it, it wasn’t a surprise to him. It sank into his brian even during the fights, especially during the fights. Whether it was his ears which heard it, his eyes which had seen it, or his skin which had felt the punches with those memories imbued.

Kouji was sure he knew this.

”So you ain’t gonna quit, and I’m not even gonna try, that’s a shame. I’d have liked to fight alongside you sometime, but getting to fight you all over Hoenn? That seems like good fun too.” He knew that to be true, that something great would come from this trial, their fight.

It would lead to a wonderful future, in its own way.

”Haaah, so, what the hell are the league and rocket even fighting over?” To ask this, after the long day they had, after all the blood he had spilled, Kouji found it utterly laughable.
