Kouji smirked in return, but that smirk dropped away just the same. ”It ain’t just running away that gets you a scarred back.” He knew the truth of that full well. ”It’s getting betrayed. A guy like you is someone that can be easily sold off. The world ain’t that kind and it definitely ain’t peachy. Stabbing someone in the back, that’s the average monday for some people.”

He knew that full well, he’d done it before, and he’d do it again, it was the darkness that clung to things, he and his pokemon weren’t all the different in some ways, it was why he gravitated towards that type. They looked cute and fluffy at times, and yet, their repressed, suppressed, evil notions would overtake them at some point.

It was the knowledge any dark type trainer should have held, most suppressed it to never be seen again. But Kouji encouraged it, and in doing so, he encouraged himself.

“Yeah, well…” Navy considers that. The people he’s met. There’s some scum out there, sure. But there’s plenty of good people, too. Melody, for instance. He can’t see Melody as the sort of person who would ever stab him in the back. Some part of him, just based off of that gut instinct he has about her, makes him want to be around her more.[break][break]
But that’ll come later. After he escapes this place. Even if he misses her. There’s still one more battle for him to fight. They’re just catching their breath. Licking their wounds a little ahead of the final act. The curtain call. It’s safe to call this a draw. Arceus knows they’ve beaten the crap out of each other.[break][break]

He’d left everyone behind, betrayed those that supported him, and kicked down the pillar that was the centerpoint of his life for better or worse. It was the kind of life he had lived for a singular concept he didn’t really understand.

“It’s what I promised my brother I’d do.” He seems to say this in every conversation. It’s what drives him. People need reasons to get up in the morning. To endure. Stuff that gets them through balancing their checkbook, taking stock of their bills. It helps him get through the shitty days and the bad parts, where he has to eat shitty dime store ramen just to survive. Dreaming of a day when he’ll finally, finally be on top.[break][break]
Navy’s never stopped to consider why Gabe even wanted that. That question’s not important. He assumes his little brother just wanted it because it was a shiny prize. He’s never stopped to consider what Gabe even saw a champion’s duty as being.[break][break]
He regrets that he’ll never get to ask him.[break][break]

A champion that stands above the others, that was the goal. Kouji didn’t have any such thing, he knew, he had thought, and he felt he had reached until he had seen just how far away from the top he had been that entire day.

”Close but no dice. I don’t care about being the best warrior in Rocket. I’m more of a breaker nowadays, if they send me to attack things I’m satisfied with just that much, but if I had a goal…” Kouji made sure to be straight forward about it, what he actually wanted before smirking as he brought himself back up to his feet.

It would be the first time he put this into words, but at the same time it felt just right. ”For a never ending brawl, everywhere.” Chaos, unending battles, if he couldn’t have a normal life in society, nobody else should be able to. Kouji came to that conclusion in that moment. It was different to rocket, it was his goal and his alone, he finally gave voice to it.

It wasn’t a goal born of simple spite, but something built up by him in this encounter, in all of his encounters. He had grown, his pokemon had grown, and he wanted that to continue, a world of unending evolution, that was his goal. ”I just want to be able to fight all the time, with everyone.” That was it, his simple idea. But he wouldn’t put voice again to it, for a while.

”Let’s wrap this up. My mind’s is fading, and I’d rather go out to punch.” His legs were shaky, he could feel it, in the dream. His mind was growing sharper, for this singular blow that he would deliver. It would be the final send off.

Navy laughs once more. He knows that hell’s coming. Another big punch. So be it. He’s taken plenty of those today. What’s one more for the road? He presses his fingers to the ground. Pushes himself up. There’s just one last thing to do. Then, for better or worse, it’ll be done. If Navy had to take a guess, the battle going on in the caves above was already over. The fight’s been fought. For better or worse for their respective sides, things have shaken out like they’re going to shake out.[break][break]
“Well, buddy. I guess you can call me Jirachi.” He grips his fist tight. He wobbles forward. The wobble turns into a run. The world around them shifts from red, to green, to blue, to yellow. A dynamic change of colors. A kaleidoscope of pretty patterns. A whirling world. It revolves. Howls.[break][break]
He runs to deliver his final punch. The send-off. The denouement to this whole day. And, with that punch would come oblivion. A sweet release. Not death. He wouldn’t die today. Too much to do. But it’d be a close thing. He ran along the edge of a straight razor. Blue energy gathered on his hand once more. Whirring behind him. Navy swears, out of the corner of his eyes, he sees a towering dark bear. Its fist moves with his own.[break][break]
“Let’s get this over with, Koujiiiiiiiiiiiiii!”
