He's made their acquaintance before, and is loathe to confront them, but he wasn't being given a choice. They had drawn their lines, picked their sides... It was inevitable.[break][break]

"With a smile," he offers snidely, but a lie.[break][break]

Though the creature observes them, it remains disinclined to intervene. Adrian instead elects to grasp at a pokeball of his own, and though his heart is steady, his conscience remains ill at ease.[break][break]

Copperajah takes the field, hulking over them both.

"yeah?" accepting matters for what they were, his first hurdle comes in the form of a copperajah. a steel type.

unfortunately, derek had no copperajah to be able to go tit for tat. he would just have to play at this a little differently then he would have liked. the pokeball in his hand would release it's contents, answering adrian's challenge with an annihilape. "...let's see if it lasts."

provided it also had eyes to observe the devastation on display, derek's annihilape wasted no time exacting it's toll upon the enemy in the form of a drain punch. it's reckless pursuit would reflect derek's frustration within.

Unleashed from their pokeball is a strange, unhinged-looking Primeape that he mistakes at first for some aberration spawned of the recent hatchery. When the creature whose aura unnerves him lashes out against Copperajah, it reels from the blow despite its stature, and Adrian can hear the crunch of metal crushing...[break][break]

He winces, but ultimately demonstrates misplaced confidence in his own pokemon's constitution.[break][break]

"Raj, caltrops," he barks back. The elephant rears back, its distended trunk dragging against the earthen terrain before ejecting rows and rows of rocks in randomized patterns, which shimmer before fading into the concealing mists surrounding them.[break][break]

COPPERAJAH uses STEALTH ROCKS!

as expected, adrian's approach is to dictate control over the battlefield. to force a fight on his terms. but as he understands it, this copperajah can do plenty more than scatter a few stealth rocks. best not to let that happen.

"it's all or nothing, annihilape. make it count!" understanding it's assignment, the spectral ape rushes the copperajah to perform it's final gambit. derek knew the outcome of this move, and acted accordingly by preparing to loose another. as annihilape fell, a charizard would take it's place. one that had cheated death already... the pain of a few rocks could not compare.

Adrian watches in earnest, the strange Primeape rushing his pokemon in a single-minded trance. A flurry of strikes exhaust it severely, while Copperajah takes the brunt of the attack on its vulnerable side. The sound of wrenching metal is punctuated by the shrieking bellow that escapes it, collapsing onto its side then in anguish.[break][break]

"Raj, get up! We're not finished yet!"[break][break]

Despite his urgings, the creature doesn't rise; nor does it so much as stir, meekly caught in the final throes, its every labored breath enfeebled by the devastating blow against its ribs. As always, he expects too much—from his pokemon, and himself.[break][break]

Too often he finds himself here of late, tending to a creature in its final moments, or being the one to see it done. It's enough to stymie his previous aggression, as he's absolved in the guilty remorse that overtakes anyone who is charged with the care of another life—and fails in that noblest endeavor...[break][break]

Descending from the dim looming overheard, the nightborne creature apprises itself of their mortal coil. Four beings it counted with its eyes, but only one fated for ruin...[break][break]

...Yet it is not the creature clinging to life, gasping against the ground, but the one with whom it has only just been acquainted. As the aspect makes its descent, it lowers itself gently over the fallen one, safeguarding it as a bird would its clutch.[break][break]

Before anything more could be uttered, it lowers its focus to the injured pokemon, its body shimmering with unnatural wonder. A red aura washes over itself and the creature beneath its wings, forestalling death as only it could—before turning its attention back to the transgressor, eyes dilating.[break][break]

From its mouth came the rasp of a low hissing, befouling the air with its guttural tongue as it succumbed to obsession.

though his intentions weren't so severe, derek was able to overlook the tragedy before him. this was the nature of the battlefield. of the perpetual grudge between the league and team rocket. there was no end to their growing vendetta.

though adrian would find some comfort, however, coming in the form of copperajah's apparent resurrection. since when did the pokemon of destruction have such a power?

it's a question derek can't linger on for long, as yveltal's call snaps one's attention back to the battle.

"apollo!" as the charizard moves to meet them head-on, the power of their bond manifests in vibrant wisps. fully engulfed, the charizard is overtaken by mega-evolution in order to demonstrate it's herculean power.

a gmax wildfire aspires to burn the bacon bird.

Inundated by a sea of flames, Yveltal's silhouette fades with the rising inferno as Adrian and Copperajah are forced to seek shelter. The blaze casts a roiling glow across the crag, dissipating the lingering shroud. Placing a palm against Copperajah with a reassuring touch, Adrian siphons an onze of its renewed vitality before withdrawing it, securing the pokeball to his belt. With his gift he is able to withstand the wildfire long enough to escape its licking flames—but only just.[break][break]

He pats away at embers, but trains his eyes ahead: White-on-black eyes disrupt his features as Adrian gleans the source of its sudden fervor: In Apollo he sees the tellings of an aberrant aura, a blight upon the earth. It calls out to be purged.[break][break]

"Derek..." Adrian considers this a foregone conclusion, expressing his sympathies, yet ultimately reconciling with the necessitation of this act. Though the roaring pyrostorm makes communication meaningless, it is nonetheless spoken. But then, from out of the hellfire and brimstone, comes the sleek, daunting guise of Yveltal, blanketed in a miasma that smoldered with the overbearing heat...[break][break]

With a fel shriek it swoops, its ghastly visage outlined in phantasmagoria as it plunges towards Apollo, meaning to leave its benighted mark upon it...[break][break]

apollo's demonstration of power dissipates, and the ghastly image that is yveltal comes forth to exact a toll. the damage is done. derek begins to wonder just how long his charizard can last. curses himself for always having the wrong pokemon for the job.

but apollo returns hostilities in earnest. another eruption from his maw seeks out the avian, a raging inferno that would begin to deplete the available air around them. derek is aware of this tendency. the air is already hot to breathe. how can i end this quickly...

derek looks to his enemy. notices something about adrian. why does he look so sad? perhaps solemn was the better word, but it was peculiar considering appearances would see him on the winning side.

Its body shimmers with a scarlet hue along flowing black lines forming across its body: A disruptive dissonance builds up, erupting with jagged arcs that consolidate themselves in a sphere surrounding its physical form. There is a sound—a horrible howling of wind and dust—as life is ripped out of matter, light and life. The world erodes away at its reckoning, laying waste to an already desolate landscape...

apollo has faced annihilation before. knows what the end of one's story looks like. and when he observes yveltal conjuring it's great power, he is able to accept that fate...



derek is at his wit's end. the collective power of yveltal is more than he knows, and one can not simply guard against it. but there is no time, and he is left to simply watch his pokemon wither away as it saves his life the second time.

when things settle, the yveltal stands over it's trophy as if to stake claim to the corpse. derek wouldn't have it. the slew of pokeballs that come forth release a metagross and flygon respectively. while one is a means of escaping, the metagross forces yveltal away with it's light of ruin, allowing derek to secure what remains of his charizard before electing to retreat...
