At first, Gunner didn't know what Summer held in her hand. He looked down at the objects with obvious confusion, his brow furrowed. As soon as he recognized them for what they were, however, his eyes grew wide as saucers and his jaw went slack.[break][break]

In his twenties, Gunner had wanted to get married and start a family. While his brother GIDEON GRAVES seemed to view children with a certain level of disdain, Gunner had always wanted one. Maybe even two.[break][break]

But his dreams had shattered when the Kanto War changed his entire life around. And when he'd become a spy for the League government, he'd abandoned the possibility of ever regaining those dreams.[break][break]

"Summer, is this real?" he asked slowly, not sure how to respond. It was a stupid question, of course, but they'd been careful — or so he'd thought.[break][break]

A dozen questions raced through his head. Gunner looked into her eyes.[break][break]

"Is it mine?" Another seemingly stupid question, but they'd only been exclusive for a few weeks. That he could have gotten his new girlfriend pregnant seemed impossible, but he couldn't deny that the timing worked out.

Summer heard his question, not even answering verbally. She just nodded, her blood running cold as she panicked on the inside. Gunner was going to kick her out. Send her to the street and ask her to never see him again.[break][break]

Fuck, how many times could she mess everything up?[break][break]

Her gaze snapped up as he asked the second question. Did he truly believe that she'd been seeing someone else, even before they were exclusive? That this was all some kind of mess up? It felt almost insulting.[break][break]

"You're the only one I've seen for several months."

Gunner could tell from the stiffness of Summer's movements that she wasn't pleased, though he could only guess at the true state of her emotions. It wasn't until her gaze finally snapped up to meet his, her two-toned eyes flashing with defensiveness, that he realized he'd said the wrong thing.[break][break]

"I'm sorry, that's not — I didn't —"[break][break]

He sighed and did the only thing he thought could fix it: he hugged her. Wrapping his arms around her, Gunner held Summer tightly against his chest, trying to convey his love and support.[break][break]

Pressing his nose into her hair, he breathed in deeply, trying to calm his own rattled nerves. A jumble of unprocessed emotions bounced around inside his chest, but he'd deal with them later.[break][break]

"Do you want to keep the baby?" he asked softly. That was the most important question.

In a clearly already hormonal state, Summer felt the familiar sting of tears threatening to break through the barrier. She wasn't going to cry. If it was over, then she'd leave with her head up-[break][break]

Until he wrapped his arms around her, holding her close. She could hear his heart beating in his chest, and the dam broke. Tears dripped down her face as she sniffed pitifully, holding him back.[break][break]

"Do you want it?" she asked almost hesitantly, her voice quiet from his chest.

When Summer returned his question, Gunner turned inward, allowing himself to imagine again the life he'd thought he wanted. Marriage. Children. He wasn't ready for the former, but as Summer's tears soaked into his shift, he knew he couldn't deny her the latter.[break][break]

Those were tears of fear, and he had never seen her so afraid. His heart ached to see it, to hear her sniffles, to know that denying their child a life would ruin her own.[break][break]

"Yes, of course," Gunner found himself saying, ignoring the panic that suddenly reared its head within him. "If you want it, I want it."[break][break]

His hands rubbed Summer's back, trying to calm her, though perhaps he was subconsciously trying to calm himself. A child brought a lot of change. How long could he live this double life around Summer? How long could he deceive her?

Summer wondered if he remembered the time they were on the beach, when she had confessed she had carried a child before. Though that one didn't make it, she thought... hoped... this time would be different.[break][break]

The fragility in Summer's voice broke Gunner's heart. They hadn't been dating for long; in fact, it felt like they were still just getting to know each other. She was right to ask that question, to doubt him. He knew that an ex-boyfriend had gotten her pregnant before, only to disappear, leaving her to deal with a miscarriage alone.[break][break]

It was a fate he wished upon no woman, and it granted him a resolve he did not know he had. Dragging it out from deep within, Gunner shook his head, setting his jaw with determination. "I'm serious, Summer. You know that about me."[break][break]

He would have to process his churning thoughts and emotions later. Summer's well being was most important now, especially after catching a faint trace of hope beneath her open vulnerability. It was a hope Gunner did not want to extinguish, not with doubts, not with fears.[break][break]

Gently, he released her from the embrace. "Why don't you go wash your face? I'll get you something to drink, and we can cuddle on the couch with a movie."

Maybe it wasn't fair for her to be questioning Gunner like this. It was her own insecurities holding her away from celebrating this with him, although it was a shocking revelation. She sighed before looking back up at him.[break][break]

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to sound harsh. I wasn't sure how you would react. This is all so new and so fast, I..." Summer paused, glancing away shyly.[break][break]

"I don't want to lose you too."[break][break]

There was a moment's beat before she nodded, separating from him long enough to go clean up and come back. Except she decided to change in the process, getting more comfy and cozy in one of his sweatshirts.[break][break]

"You won't lose me," Gunner promised, leaning down to kiss her before she left to wash up.[break][break]

He hoped he could keep that promise, though the growing pit in his stomach filled him with doubt. Pushing that side, he flopped onto the couch and turned on the TV, flipping through the menu to load Netflix.[break][break]

Perhaps a movie would take his mind off the day's revelation and allow him to enjoy the rest of his day with Summer.[break][break]

When she returned and joined him on the sofa, he wrapped his arm around her shoulders and kissed the top of her head. "Is there anything in particular you want to watch? Any genre or title?"
