When he next dives into the rift, he does so willingly. With Josh Devlin at his side, Navy rushes headlong into this fight. If the Rockets want to exploit this place, they’ll do so over his dead body.[break][break]
This is his third encounter with this rift today. His third dive into this mercurial sea. Already, he feels what he has felt twice before. The ghost of his brother on his back while he rides Ironsides above the waters below. Gabe whispering into his ear.[break][break]
“Careful, Navy.” His brother whispers. “He’s not the hero you think he is.” Whatever the thing wearing his brother’s skin is, it doesn’t sound like him anymore. The voice is his, but the words…[break][break]
That couldn’t be farther from Gabriel Navidson. Navy tries to push errant thoughts from his mind. Thoughts about Melody and her battle alongside the rest of the Elite 4, somewhere else in this cave. Thoughts about Tsubaki, lost and alone without him. Lopez, the Champion, off proving he’s the best, like always.[break][break]
There’s only the mission. Down below, he spies some Rockets about to delve into the ruins of an ancient ship. He looks over at Josh, who he is sure is riding some Pokemon of his own. Josh is the finest Pokemon rider that Navy’s ever seen. He looks forward to seeing Mauville’s gym leader swoop down on these bad guys. It’ll be a quick battle. In and out. Then, maybe he can make some sense of this place. Get Josh to help him find Tsubaki. Finish playing his next bit role in history and get out of here.[break][break]
“Let’s go, Josh.”[break][break]
And with those words, Ironsides falls into a swoop. The Skarmory becomes a bladed missile, aimed directly at the Rockets beneath them.

Josh's Pokémon were piling up in a big way at the infirmary of a League base near the rift's entrance. From outside the cave, inside the cave, in the rift, and even in the Interdream Zone itself, the Mauville Gym Leader fought with what some could argue was reckless abandon. Fearlessly wielding Danjuro in his right hand and holding the reins of Zetalpa, his Tropius, in his left, he flew alongside Old Ironsides and Navy, likewise surveying the ground from high above Ultra Deep Sea's surface.

"Yes, let's not be here any longer than we need to," Josh answered. With so many of his Pokémon hurt, he even had to close his Gym for several days. He had gone through over forty Pokémon on what turned out to be the longest day of his life yet. While only a dozen of them or so were likely receiving active care, the others were too injured to return to the battlefield any time soon. With how late in the day it was, Josh crossed his fingers that the League would be able to repel Team Rocket before the sun went down. "Come on, Zetalpa, keep pace with Navy. Use OUTRAGE!" With that, the flying dinosaur tucked his wings in, Josh feeling himself being thrown into the top of his cocoon as he experienced negative gravity from the screeching dive that looked to pick off several Rockets trying to loot the vessel.

Some of the Rockets have the right kind of eyes to look up. They see the two swooping heroes. Navy feels the rush of air and blood as he sweeps across these errant grunts. Nobody important. Navy has barely encountered any important Rockets all day. More monotony. Busywork…[break][break]
He takes out all the fury he feels towards their organization on them. Ironsides soars like a brave bird, swooping down over them. Tearing through their lines. Men scream, like they always do. The grunts scramble to pull their pokeballs free. They toss out Pokemon.[break][break]
Cassius is out of his ball as well. Chuckling. Cheering. Smashing. Navy sees the Machamp engage in close combat. He loves jumping out of his ball and causing havoc. Navy helps him out by launching a scatterbang into the crowd. Many of the grunts are blinded. Cassius’s fists whirl and whirr. Navy soars back up, keeping himself out of harm’s way. Ironsides and him both survey the battlefield below.[break][break]
“Looks like this party’s gettin’ started in style!” Navy chuckles, happy to have been armed with some new tools by the League. They know he’s here now. Something tells him he might even get a paycheck out of this.[break][break]
As he focuses on his banter, the detective fails to observe the water bubbling in the brine a few hundred yards away from the wrecked ship.

Josh mimicked Zetalpa's anger, manipulating the Tropius' reins with almost cruel force. Though the Gym Leader made no reservations in announcing his presence, the sheer momentum of the flying quadrupedal grass-type knocked the small army and their Pokémon around like bowling pins... until the duo flew straight into a stray AURORA BEAM. Unable to maintain lift with the flight surfaces of his wings contaminated by ice, Zetalpa flapped them furiously to try to make an emergency landing as smooth as possible.

Josh tossed a second Poké Ball to the ground, landing on the Ursaluna's back just before the knocked-out Grass-type crashed. "Run, Moosh!" Josh ordered, pushing on steering bars protruding from the end of the bear's saddle due to his wide body shape making reins impractical. "Now, step on it!" The Pokémon bellowed as Josh dug into the Ursaluna's flanks, ramming toward and trampling enemy Pokémon with his HIGH HORSEPOWER.

Navy pulls up on Ole Ironsides’s reins, narrowly avoiding the two taking a tumble into the side of the liner. Instead, he pulls the old bird into a controlled landing, but not before leaving the grunts below some surprises in the form of spikes littering the ground. Moving through those would prove difficult at best. The bladed feathers of the bird dart the ground. It restricts their movement, ensures they can’t move freely to jump out of Josh and his Pokemon’s way.[break][break]
Landing, Navy quickly pulls Ironsides back into his ball. Before he can pull Ironsides back in, the old bird has flown up to near the top of the ship and fallen asleep. He roosts there, seemingly oblivious to the battle below.[break][break]
“Why, that guy…!” A new contender shows up. One who has something vicious enough to match the bear Josh rides tit for tat. A tyrantrum takes to the field. It lumbers forward, meeting the Ursaluna’s high horsepower with a powerful bite.[break][break]
An unstoppable force meets an immovable object. The bubbles from the water grow in intensity. The lub-dub of the cavern’s heartbeat quickens.

This bear was one rough ride. Though Moosh's strides were nowhere near as pronounced as the felines he was used to riding, they also didn't have the sheer strength the normal-type did. Truly, the ground-type was a combat mount rather than a racing one. That was exactly what he needed here, though, as the paws of the Pokémon he was astride blazed a trail through the Rockets' lines.

That is, until a Tyrantrum from a higher-ranking Rocket stopped the Ursaluna cold, taking a hunk out of his shoulder with his enormous, metal-crushing jaws. The steering bars helped Josh brace for the impact, which would have launched him out of the saddle otherwise. "HAMMER ARM, Moosh! Hang in there!" The large bear reared, then attempted to slam down on the ancient's Pokémon rocky frame with a heavy paw.

Josh, too, was too occupied to notice the bubbles rising, nor was he paying attention to the heartbeat. His sole focus was on the foe in front of him.

It’s a clash for the ages. Josh’s massive bear Pokemon, a Pokemon Navy has never seen before, versus a Tyrantrum. The massive T-Rex roars in pain from the bear’s counter-attack, reeling and recovering. Soon, he’s preparing to rush in again. This is a battle of titans.[break][break]
Then, a real titan shows itself. From the bubbling waters comes a Gyarados. Only, upon examination, it’s not quite a Gyarados. It has long fangs coming out of its mouth, like a sabertooth. There’s electric flare along its scales. It almost looks like…[break][break]
“Josh, we’ve got bigger problems!” Navy shouts as many of the Rocket grunts prepare to run. Before this behemoth of a creature, they are nothing. No pay day is worth this. Only the grunt with the Tyrantrum remains, his monster hellbent on continuing the fight.[break][break]
With one torrent of energy, the Tyrantrum is no more. Both he and his trainer are eliminated in a brilliant flash of energy. There’s only one move that could be. Hyper beam. Navy recoils. Ironsides is still up on top of the ship, sleeping. Not even that torrent of noise and wrath could pull him from his sleep.[break][break]
“Crap, crap crap crap.” Navy looks up and dives into cover. The dragon searches for him before settling his eyes on Josh.[break][break]
It’s do or die time for the raucous racer.

The mysterious creature's HYPER BEAM vaporizes the Tyrantrum and its trainer, leaving no trace of either. He had never seen such destruction before from any ordinary Pokémon. Not even Raikiri's PLASMA FISTS were capable of that. Was this a never-before-seen legendary Pokémon? Josh barely lived to tell the tale of his last encounter with one; he knew Cillian Quinn had willingly spared the young Gym Leader's life that day. Hell, even if he were Raikou's Avatar, he would still be powerless against Gavin.

While the electric, saber-toothed creature was catching a breather from the exertion of its HYPER BEAM, Josh withdrew Moosh for Bladestorm, his much faster Skarmory. Thankfully, Navy's shouting made the Master of Faster aware of his position. He swooped over toward where his friend was. "Hop on!" Josh urged his friend. "Get your Skarmory and let's get outta here!"

“He’s roosting up there!” Navy points to the top of the ship, where Ironsides still, despite everything, sleeps. “Guess there’s a reason they retire Pokemon after a certain age.” Navy wonders if Josh will pick up on the dry joke there, given what’s going on. Ironsides is still enjoying his middle age. Despite what he acts like, he is no old man yet.[break][break]
Navy has no doubt that Josh can and will carry him to his Skarmory in one piece. He’s the best rider in the League. No one can match Josh when there’s a saddle under him. He’s the sort of guy legends are written about once the facts have passed into myth – one of many such people in the modern Hoenn league.[break][break]
While they rush up to the Skarmory, the creature rests. He recharges. Even a monster like this has to recuperate.[break][break]
“This thing…” Navy muses. “…I’ve seen something like it before, down here. Josh, this place is weird. It’s like we’re in a waking dream. Whatever this thing is, it’s stuck here. If we can find a rift back, we can get outta here.”[break][break]
Before Navy can speak more, a voice bellows like the toll of the evening bell.[break][break]
“You let me die, Navy. You wouldn’t let Gabe swim. You can’t trust others. And you can’t save yourself.” It speaks. No Pokemon save the gods of their kind can speak, and this creature is no god.[break][break]
“It’s just…a nightmare.” Navy reminds Josh.[break][break]
“And you, Josh, for all your speed, were too slow for me. For all your grace, you weren’t fast enough to catch up.” His visage flits between Gyarados and Raikou. “We both know you are not the hero Navy thinks you are.”

Less than a second after Navy pointed out Old Ironsides' location, Josh sharply reined Bladestorm in the Steel-type's direction. "Hold on tight, Navy!" he warned. The swift Metal Menace swooped about the ship, overshooting Navy's Pokémon and giving whatever the creature under the water was the chance to recover. The riders felt themselves be pushed into their mount's saddle, and into each other, with the g-forces behind her rapid ascent.

Just as they had flown into range for Navy to withdraw the sleeping Skarmory, the nightmarish creature stared the two down face to face. Both of them saw different things, too: in Navy's eyes, a Gyarados, and in Josh's, the Beast of Thunder. The voice's words would not dissuade Josh. "No. That is not what the real Raikou would say," he barked back while he waited for Navy to recall Old Ironsides. Despite Chu-e Choi 's words, Josh had already accepted Raikou as dead. Dead if not to Team Rocket directly, then indirectly. "Begone! The real Raikou has already been taken away from me."

The pokemon returns to its ball after Navy is unable to wake him up. Much like akira’s plight with him some hours ago, Navy is completely in Josh’s care now. Whether they live or die will entirely depend upon his actions here.[break][break]
“None of my other fliers are in fighting shape. This one’s on you, buddy.” The entrance to the rift swirls far, far above them. This monster, whatever it truly is, is swift. Swift as a ship caught in a tailwind.[break][break]
Navy puts a hand on his friend’s shoulder, reassuring him – not that he truly needs any sort of reassurance.[break][break]
“You’ve got the right of it. You’re better than this. We both are.”[break][break]
The monster behind them laughs. Navy wonders what the eggheads at the League would make of this creature.[break][break]
“You didn’t have the foresight to think the Rockets might kill me, did you Josh? Your judgement is still sorely lacking.” He launches at them like a missile. Maw opened wide. Navy wonders what Josh is seeing. From his perspective, it’s Gyarados with a little bit of Raikou.[break][break]

Shortly after making sure Old Ironsides was safe, Navy pointed out the exit from the Interdream Zone back to the main Ultra Deep Sea rift was far above them. "We'll get out of here safely. One way or another. Remember, as long as I'm in the saddle, I'm unstoppable! Not even the end of the world stopped Saber and I." Though that was more Eva Morales ' doing, he had to give himself credit for his vital role in Operation 99943 Meteno.

The voice returned again, questioning his JUDGMENT. "I have already proven my FORESIGHT and JUDGMENT to Raikou! And I've already proven to Raikou that I'm not helpless against those that are faster than we are, too!" All he had left to prove to Raikou was that he had the physical prowess to stay in the saddle when riding at ultra-high speeds. He had Raikiri to help him with that. Of course, all of it was for naught. As far as he knew, the only Raikou out there was dead. No one, including him, was sitting on that thundercloud anymore.

The nightmare appeared to Josh as a fin-tailed Beast that could propel itself through the air much like the real Raikou could: leaping into thunderclouds. "Step on it, Bladestorm! AGILITY!" The two rocketed upward in a spiral in an attempt to avoid the lightning bolts crashing down all around them. Their efforts were for naught, though; the flying, finned tiger assumed the form of a lightning bolt and crashed into them. Before he could even feel Bladestorm falling, the sheer voltage behind the THUNDERBOLT pierced his SYGNA SUIT and rendered him unconscious.

When he came to, Josh was sprawled out upon the ground just outside a League base near the rift's entrance. Right in his face was the terrifying look of one of the dream world's Paradox Pokémon: a Roaring Moon. "...Ao?" Josh asked weakly.
