“I just hate when Slateport PD hires me to do this stuff. It’s ranger work, and Slateport has the best ranger corp in the country.” Navy grumbles. He had the opportunity to not do this anymore. Hell, he had the opportunity to not do a lot of things anymore. With the League cutting him that fat check, all he had to do was kick his feet up and dedicate himself wholeheartedly to training his Pokemon.[break][break]
Instead, he’s here with Tsubaki and Voyager. The Arcanine sniffs along the ground, standing as tall as Navy. Josh maintains there’s nothing weird about riding Arcanines. Considering how fast these things can go, he wonders how someone could willingly ride one without breaking its neck.[break][break]
“Ranger corps aren’t bad, if that’s ever a road you wanna go down. You mostly deal with Pokemon, not people.” He knows that might appeal to a misanthrope like her.

After all, it's human beings who use pokemon as weapons. A simple reminder of something like that kindles the hatred in your heart, and in hatred's reflection, you know what it means to love again. [break][break]

“You like philosophy, don’tcha?” Navy asks as they move through the outskirts of the city. It’s a melody of urban decay, rust, and old dreams. Some of these buildings have been the same since the 60’s. Navy played in them in old halcyon days of youth. Life wasn’t good back then, but it was different. Running away from home to keep away from his dad. Sleeping out here with the smell of rust in his nose, listening to the groan of old machines.[break][break]
“I don’t know much about that. All I know is, suit yourself if you wanna deal with people. Option’s always there if you wanna join up with the rangers.” He looks out over a dark sky. Alone, just for a moment, with his thoughts.[break][break]
“But I guess Pokemon are ruled by their instincts more than us, huh?” Even the ones which bear a passing resemblance to humanity are still bound by instincts. Humanity and humanity alone does certain actions for the sake of those actions.[break][break]
Off in the distance is a scream. Looking to Tsubaki, Navy nods and breaks into a run. He runs over old asphalt until he comes upon a scene of nature playing out before them.[break][break]
A Victreebel consumes another life whole. It pulls in another Pokemon, pushing them inside of herself. Taking all of them into herself. The carnivorous plant hungers.[break][break]
“Hey look, it’s a Pokemon you’d want.” He teases her.

And yet, if he knows, if he's accepted that, then why hasn't he left you yet? Is he simply that maddened by the pheromones of your toxic heart?[break][break]

"Sumi," you speak her name and she appears, always at your beck and call. Your most trustworthy companion. "Don't let it eat that thing!"[break][break]

She slithers forward, lunging at her opponent. A strike made with bared fangs is faster than any punch, more akin to cannon-fire. [break][break]

"That's it, throw it up..." [break][break]

You hiss at the plant as you watch the chaos unfold. The flower trying to get away, but unable to for its bloated belly.[break][break]

The Victreebel regurgitates what's in its gullet, covered in a noxious fluid that stings your eyes just to look at. It's another pokemon, small, violet, with a lightning bolt on its head. [break][break]

A red and white capsule appears in your hand and you toss it, trained instinct at this point. It's a throw not at the flower, but at its prey. It is ostensibly a rescue, something heroic done because otherwise that pokemon's life is in danger. [break][break]

But in truth you simply can't abide the competition, that desire to claim it for your own. [break][break]

If it wasn't a weak, disgusting thing, nearly broken down by acid, would you have spared it any concern at all?[break][break]

"I'll take care of the child! Sumi, finish off the flower!" [break][break]

She doesn't need your permission. With another strike already in motion, she plunges her fangs into the Victreebel while it's already on the back foot. Still reeling, flinching at her bite.[break][break]

This will end as quickly as it began. [break][break]

Or so you hope.[break][break]

Tsubaki attempts to capture Toxel.[break][break]

“Don’t get so mad.” Navy chides her with a chuckle. “I’m only teasin’ ya, Baki. Can’t say I wouldn’t mind if you took out your feelings with poetry, but you’re fine.” He gives her a smile as her pokeball clicks. She saves the Pokemon that was almost consumed and finishes off the predator. He didn’t expect that from her, but he nods all the same.[break][break]
“You’re doing better, and you’re getting better every day. Don’t forget that.” Navy refuses to let off the positive affirmation. He remembers how little his father ever praised him. Every word of praise was hard fought. So, he’s free with telling Tsubaki she’s doing a good job when she does one. [break][break]
The move on. Another Pokemon eventually crosses their path. A Serviper.[break][break]
“Gonna get that one, too? Might just be your lucky night for findin’ Pokemon.”

He's so consumed by his past, he doesn't consider your own. Empty affirmations given by a father who sees right through you. He only pretends, only goes through the motions. To be given what he should have given you, it is all-consuming. You're drowning in all that positivity, don't know how to take it in the slightest, all because Michael Navidson can't keep his compliments to his damned self.[break][break]

"R-right..."[break][break]

You stammer something stupid. Wish you could say something cool. But your cheeks burn too much to piece together the words, and it's all you can do to hope that the night is dark enough to hide your face. [break][break]

As he points out the snake crossing your path, you freeze. [break][break]

You think you see something you shouldn't, a ghost. [break][break]

But she died a long time ago. As you draw near, you realize it so easily. The scars don't match, neither does that look in its eyes. It should have been an expression like she's smiling, but it's not. It's none of that. [break][break]

It's not that ghost. At least, it's a poor copy.[break][break]

"... I'm seein' things... corpses... ghosts. Tell me I'm not goin' crazy, Navy, tell me you see it too."[break][break]

You peer into an alleyway, tear your eyes away from the image summoned from your mind, and you notice it. Flashing lights in a translucent body, tentacled monster simply standing there, staring into your soul. A Malamar, using its hypnotic abilities freely in the city.[break][break]

You can't even open your mouth to say anything. But Sumire springs into action without an order, spitting sizzling acid in its eyes, breaking its concentration. [break][break]

The Seviper vanishes. [break][break]

But you're still here, left over. [break][break]

Left over to protect this world she loved, was it? [break][break]

"... Restrain it, don't kill it!"[break][break]

She's a step ahead of you, crushing it so hard that if it had bones they'd already be broken.[break][break]

You hiss quickly under your breath, exactly like the sizzling of her acidic venom. To intervene before things go too far, even if it's too little too late. She's identified a threat to you, won't back down for anything.[break][break]

The Malamar lets out a small, pitiful gasp, expecting retribution for its transgression, but instead...[break][break]

A ball sails for its head before Sumire can finish the job. [break][break]

You won't continue that cycle, you won't feed into that. [break][break]

For her sake, you'll never do that again.[break][break]

“It’s – it’s just a Seviper. Nothin’ major.” He says as another of the pokeballs clicks. Tsubaki’s building herself a nice team today. Navy takes solace in that. She’ll need a strong team in the days ahead. He has no special intel. He’s not some upper League brass. But he has the senses of a creature born in the gutters. Something that can sense the change in the weather. Something’s coming for Hoenn. Something always comes for Hoenn. Whether it is a meteor in the sky, another world, strange new Pokemon…[break][break]

It never ends. They are all of them caught up in a great wave. It falls upon each of them to either fight against the wave or be swept along in the tide. Every click of a pokeball is Tsubaki testing herself against the wave.[break][break]

Maybe it's just the sickening number of pokemon you’ve seen trafficked over the years, but you've got hangups over just exchanging some pokemon’s owner like that.[break][break]

If Navy can prove himself to Golbat, that's the criteria you have in mind. Let that pokemon have control over it. Anything else would be criminal.[break][break]

But, it's a strange feeling, having anyone to trust like that. You used to have to take on that responsibility yourself.[break][break]

You duck between a few alleys. There's a market selling less than legal goods tucked away, and you side-eye it. As you do, you see a hand grab some jewelry from under the stall and quickly retreat again.[break][break]

A click of your tongue, you walk over and duck underneath the stall yourself.[break][break]

Feathers go flying. Pokemon scatter in every direction. You feel a foot on your shoulder, used like a stool yo get some leverage.[break][break]

Picking yourself up off the ground, you look over to see Sumire’s tail coiled around one of the pokemon’s feet, the Nuzleaf trying its best to escape her grasp.[break][break]

You walk up to it, ready to give Sumire the all-clear. But in that time, the stall’s owner seems to have noticed, watching carefully.[break][break]

”Hey, you're hurting other people when you steal, y'know?”[break][break]

You walk over and knock on its head. It lets go of the merchandise in surprise, and you pick it up, carrying it over to the counter. [break][break]

”Hey, I'm buying this for that pokemon there, so no hard feelings, alright?”[break][break]

The shopkeeper eyes you suspiciously, like he’s never seen a good deed in his life. Finally, after you slide twice what it's worth over the table, he seems satisfied to not make a scene.[break][break]

”You’re pretty quick, aren't you?”[break][break]

You bend down to talk to the Nuzleaf as Sumire lets go of its leg. It stares up at you, still wary.[break][break]

”Just trying to make a living, yeah? Do what you gotta to survive. I get it, a hundred percent. But, if you wanna use those skills for something more valuable than petty theft… why not come with me? You’ll never have to steal to fill your empty tummy again. So what about it? Huh?”[break][break]
