[break][break] growing up in the household that she had, there was only but a sheer absence of it. her workaholic and abusive father never came home enough, and when he did, his gifts were always sour and tinged with the bitterness of whatever mistake he had made. she hated her father for giving them, and hated her mother for receiving it.

[break][break] as a kid, mila had tried her damndest to shield lukas from it but even then, it hadn't been perfect. after all, how could you provide a safety net when you barely knew it yourself?

[break][break] then lukas had died, and her world had fallen to pieces. she had fallen to pieces, and she hadn't think anyone would ever want to pick those pieces up and put them back together.

[break][break] mila's eyelids fluttered open, and she found herself nestled in the warmth of another's arms. the morning light filtered softly through the curtains of his slateport city apartment, fancier than any place she'd ever been, and it cast a gentle glow on their intertwined bodies.

[break][break] still sleepy, mila turned her head to the side. it was only then that the moments from the night before all tumbled together - how she'd turned up at his door, taken off her all her clothes, and dared him to put aside his work to simply ravish her.

[break][break] instinct pulled at her to disentangle herself. it was still early — maybe she could get away without him noticing. but for some reason, she found herself pulled closer — leaning into the warmth of his embrace.

[break][break] one hand reached up to tap his unshaven cheek.

[break][break] "gunner," she whispered. "wake up."

In the years since the Kanto War, he'd become familiar with it. His work with the HBIC meant he could no longer share his life's work or its challenges with his family or friends. And in the wake of Sayori's death, he wasn't sure he could let someone into his heart again.[break][break]

He sought the cure for his ailment in the worst way. He knew this; GIDEON GRAVES knew this and always tried persuading him to stop. But Gunner did not know how to stop. Perhaps, he'd darkly mused, he didn't want it to stop.[break][break]

People were often so comfortable in their misery that they refused to seek happiness.[break][break]

Yet when he opened his eyes to see Mila's face mere inches from his own, he did not withdraw from the promise of what finding her still there could mean. Instead, the corner of his mouth turned up in a crooked smile as he remembered the previous night's activities.[break][break]

"Hey," Gunner murmured, his voice still thick from sleep. "I thought you'd be gone by now."[break][break]

Instead, her body pressed against his in the most delicious way, the heat of her delightful. He tightened his arms around her, the fingers of one hand tracing the curve of her spine in lazy strokes.

When Mila looked up into his eyes, Gunner felt like he could drown in her amaranthine gaze. Her expression was one he'd never seen grace her face before: vulnerable, tender. He leaned toward her automatically, drawn like a moth to flame.[break][break]

"No. Stay," he said as his nose lightly brushed her cheek. "This is nice."[break][break]

Up until that moment, Gunner had only ever kissed Mila with a fervent, lustful need. They knew only passion without intimacy. But now, in the warm tranquility of morning, his lips pressed against hers with an unguarded gentleness.[break][break]

A small part of him felt guilty, kissing her this way. After all, he didn't love her. He couldn't love her. But a greater part of him — the part that hurt, the part that cried for the soul of another to touch his own — drank in the softness of the moment like a man starved.

[break][break] "you're terrible," she whispered, but it was conspiratorially, like a secret.

[break][break] his lips pressed against hers, and she felt herself obliging. she was a little impatient - she always was - but gunner kissed her slow and steady, maintaining it even as she wanted to push further. the way he kissed her made her heart flutter in a way that was traitorous.

Gunner didn't know it, but he fell in love with Mila that day. No matter how many times he'd deny it in the coming weeks, months, and even years, he fell for her conspiratorial whispers and the quiet urgency of her kisses. For the quirk of her lips as she grinned at him and the feel of her body fitting against his.[break][break]

But at that moment, overriding all seeds of love was a sudden, animalistic need. Heat flared within Gunner as Mila straddled him. Sitting up, he wrapped one arm around her to keep her on his lap; his other hand reached up to fondle her chest.[break][break]

[break][break] her lips sought his again, this time with more intensity than it had before. she pressed close against him, hands tangling in the sheets behind them as she slipped her tongue into his mouth.

[break][break] his other questions went unanswered as mila focused on her ministrations, devoted to making sure that gunner would be as much of a mess as she was. there was no way she was losing to him.

Whatever snarky comment Gunner's brain conjured in response died on his tongue as Mila started moving against him. His breath hitched and his eyes fluttered closed. Her exquisite heat enveloped him, from the way she kissed his mouth to the press of her body against his.[break][break]

Gunner's hands roamed ceaselessly: guiding Mila by the hip, cupping her face, tangling into her short hair. His lips planted heated kisses across her collarbone and chest.[break][break]

She made good on her promise to herself. Before long, Gunner's breathing was reduced to short gasps, every muscle straining as he helped Mila chase her peak. He refused to crumble first, focusing intently on getting her there instead.[break][break]

So keyed in was he to her noises and the slightest changes in her movements that he noticed when she was close to the end. He pressed down on her hips with his hands, trying to coax it out of her.[break][break]

"Come on, darling," he rumbled into her ear. "Sing for me."

[break][break] "strawberries," she quips, before deciding to finally push herself from the warm bedding. however, she only slips on her bra and underpants, dragging the thin cotton blanket around her shoulders like a robe.

Gunner left the bedroom for the kitchen, but not before saying, "During law school," in response. If Mila wanted more information, she'd have to follow him.[break][break]

His apartment was not large, but it was nicer than what most bachelors in their late twenties could afford. His bedroom connected to an open common area, a mix of kitchen, living room, and dining room.[break][break]

His laptop was still open on the coffee table, forgotten in the wake of Mila's arrival the night before and her persistent demands for Gunner's attention.[break][break]

The man poured himself a glass of water first, relishing the refreshing coldness of it, then started gathering ingredients. Flour, eggs, salt, milk, butter, sugar, baking powder… and, of course, strawberries.[break][break]

It would not occur to Gunner until much, much later that these domestic moments would be the ones he'd miss the most after Mila's sudden disappearance.

[break][break] to be honest, she had never given much thought about it. her own life was chaotic as it was, she didn't have time to keep tabs on others. even if it was Gunner Graves .

Mila's shriek brought an unexpected laugh out of Gunner, though it quickly turned into a yelp of surprise as she jumped onto his back. Thankfully, she weighed next to nothing, so he only wobbled slightly before regaining his balance.[break][break]

"What the fuck, Mila?" he exclaimed, laughing again.[break][break]

Gunner carefully lowered her back to the floor, then resumed making the batter.[break][break]

"I mean law school. After I got my bachelor's degree, I got my graduate degree in law at Slateport University. I was going to be a lawyer, but then I got snapped up by the Department of Defense," he explained as he mixed the dry and wet ingredients together.[break][break]

"So I never took the bar exam, but my degree did help me with my current cover as a paralegal."
