Gods could die.[break][break]

But wasn't it so much more common for humanity to fall in times of crisis like this?[break][break]

They were no exception. The godbeast's lightning made quick work of their boat, splintering the wood with one stroke of electricity. [break][break]

Barnaby succumbed to the water first, quickly followed by his CHARIZARD. The flame on its tail was extinguished, leaving the creature powerless and unable to regain flight. As the light from its eyes faded, so too did BARNABY FINCH's.[break][break]

Drowning was not as depicted in films or other media. He thrashed against the turbulent waves, arms flailing for Elisabeth Fiorelli but unable to even see her in the wreckage. The pain was unbearable. The fear palpable. Minutes felt like hours. The agony was unmatched to anything he'd felt before.[break][break]

But then, it was over. He was gone.

Her howling screams tore through the thunder and lighting, deafened to the sound of a whimper, as the boat capsized beneath their feet. Helplessness took hold, its creeping familiarity a specter that had come back to haunt her.[break][break]

Not now, her mind pleaded desperately as the water rose around them both. Somewhere, the shadow of BARNABY FINCH lurched before blue-black waves, cruelly out of reach. Not him.[break][break]

Fear and panic clawed through her, all reason lost as she frantically attempted to hold herself above water. Simulations felt real enough that their origin didn't matter; rationality lost to what senses dictated as reality.[break][break]

Legs kicked and arms flailed, finding purchase on seaweed that twisted and writhed at the beckon of her resentment. It was not enough to save them. None of it was enough.[break][break]

The whirlpool surging at the centre of the ocean would see to that.[break][break]

Bitterly, she turned her salted face skyward where the hateful deity glared down at them both, illuminated in the flash of lightning. She looked about herself, and once more, a scream ripped from her throat.[break][break]

"Tapu Fini!" she shrieked to the sky. "Guardian of the Seas! Answer me!"[break][break]

Her goddess couldn't hear her. Not in a universe that wasn't real. Not in a place that wasn't its own to rule.[break][break]

But Elisabeth had forgotten where she was, if not who she was.[break][break]

"Damn you!" she cried, sobbing as the seaweed tore from her fingertips, thrusting her into the current as saltwater filled her lungs. She became a limp ragdoll of a thing, refuse tossed from wave to wave before being discarded to the sea's darkest depths. Her heart constricted beneath her ribs, threatening to burst at any given moment from the lack of air.[break][break]

Just do it, she found herself thinking, in this one last coherent command her mind could give her body. If you're going to die, then die.[break][break]

Drowning was a poison of its own: drop by drop, administered minute by minute, until at last you succumbed to the toll it took on your body.[break][break]

Its eventual release was a mercy.
