Gunner waited outside the gates of the Magnificent Funtasia set up in Rustboro City, scanning the crowd. He hadn't been surprised one bit when mila alexopoulos asked him to go with her, and now he looked for her among the arrivals.[break][break]

Two months had passed since the Battle of the Ancient Tomb — and since Gunner and Mila had reunited as lovers. At first, their relationship had been nice, even good. But then she'd screamed at him for having an AmiGo account (despite having one herself) and they'd stopped speaking for a solid week.[break][break]

And now they were checking out the carnival together.[break][break]

Some things never changed.[break][break]

"Mila, over here!" Gunner shouted as soon as he spotted her. He waved a hand, hoping to grab her attention.

[break][break] mad at him because he'd come back and more importantly, come back to her, only to find that he'd gotten bored again and was going on the amigo app. but she'd already screamed at him about it, already ripped her frustrations up in the air. there was only so much she could hold it against him, after all, when she'd done the very same thing.

[break][break] but it didn't mean that she couldn't be mad, but even when she was mad, she still missed him. the week after their fight, mila had dove into her work. she set up consultation after consultation, working herself to the brim, convincing herself that she was thrilled to work on these new designs and not have to be distracted by gunner while working.

[break][break] in a way, though, it was a good thing. she'd had a breakthrough on a design and the traveling carnival was the perfect way to celebrate it. and inviting Gunner Graves , after they'd fought and hadn't spoken about it since, had been the icing on top of the cake. a guilty pleasure that she couldn't quite admit to.

[break][break] her smile is dazzling when they meet, as she flounces up to him. perhaps a little bit frayed at the edges. she grabs his hand and tugs him through the crowd.

Mila's beaming smile was all it took for Gunner to forget his anger. He let her lead him through the pressing throng of people, taking in the sights and sounds as he passed them. It was not his first time at the carnival, but it was his first time with her.[break][break]

That alone made every old thing new and exciting again.[break][break]

"Is there anything specific you want to do?" he asked. Fireworks were scheduled for the end of the night. Perhaps they'd stay long enough to watch. "There's the Ferris wheel, bumper cars…"[break][break]

The cloying aroma of baked sweets assaulted him, overwhelming his nose.[break][break]

"Or we could just grab something to eat and walk around, too."

[attr="class","mila2"] "mm, bumper cars?" she pauses for a moment, looking back and her eyes dart up to his, with a bit of heat. "i'd like to bump a thing or two with you, but maybe later." she winked.

[break][break] normally, mila knew that she and gunner didn't really do this. they weren't together, at least not in the real way. but after weeks of being without him, she couldn't help it. it was addicting and it made her want to dance at the edge of disaster, just a little bit more than usual.

[break][break] she pulled him towards one of the food carts, dragged towards it by the cloying smell of sweets.

[break][break] "buy one for me?" she asked, head tilted towards him, as one of her fingers pinched his t-shirt.

[break][break] 'hey! you cut the line!'

[break][break] little did she know, she'd pushed them all the way to the front of the line. when someone voiced their distress, her head snapped back towards them with a scowl.

[break][break] "so what?" she said hotly. "are you going to do something about it?"

Gunner grinned at Mila's innuendo, already envisioning what the rest of the night would bring. But then she dragged him toward a food cart selling all sorts of carnival treats: funnel cake, cotton candy, caramel popcorn, to name a few.[break][break]

He expected her to bring them to the end of the line, but instead, she pushed her way to the front, ignoring the shouts of several startled customers. Gunner turned toward them, apologizing, even as he followed Mila to the front of the line.[break][break]

"Mila—" he started to say, but she interrupted him, demanding that he buy her a snack.[break][break]

She finally heard the complaints of the other festival-goers. For a split second, Gunner thought she would realize her error and apologize, but she only snapped back at them.[break][break]

Of course.[break][break]

"Sorry," he interrupted before the irate stranger could escalate the issue. For good measure, he stepped between them and Mila, separating the two with his body. Protecting her. "We didn't see the line. We'll go and wait. Right?"[break][break]

He said the last bit to Mila, turning so he could look her directly in the eye.

[break][break] this is why she hated kids. she didn't know why they had to make such a fuss — she was hungry and they hadn't been moving up in the line, so of course she was going to step in where there was a gap! it wasn't her fault they were such slowpokes.

[break][break] her mouth pressed into a taut line as she glared daggers at the child and mother who had started to complain. her cheeks felt hot. it wasn't a big deal. they could've just let her and gunner get their food, and everyone would be on their merry way, and —

[break][break] "sorry?" she echoed, her gaze whirling to his. her eyes were a little wild. how -

[break][break] he had shoved himself between the two of them and looked squarely at her. before she could even so much as open her mouth, she was forced to stare at calm, unrelenting blue.

[break][break] the thump-thump of her heart suddenly quieted. she chewed the inside of her cheek.

[break][break] "fine," she said, tugging him away. "i wasn't even hungry anyway."

Much to Gunner's surprise, Mila backed down. A stubborn petulance still clouded her face, but she stepped away from the food stall, tugging him along with her. He followed without question, falling into step beside her.[break][break]

"Are you okay?" he asked after a moment. Unlike past incidents, when he would snap at her, her kept his voice calm and low.[break][break]

They were in public, after all. The last thing he wanted was to draw undesired attention to themselves.[break][break]

"We can get food at someplace without a line, if you really want." She'd said she wasn't hungry, but he knew her better than that.

[attr="class","mila2"] "of course i'm fine, i'm just - " the words fly from her mouth without even thinking twice about it. but when she whirls around to meet him, expecting heat and fire and all the things that she and Gunner Graves are known for, she just finds calmness.

[break][break] he looks at her, all sincerinity and peace and concern, and her hard exterior breaks. just a little bit.

[break][break] the ride that she had been on for the last several days, like a rollercoaster that had just reached it's climax, just starts to teeter over the edge.

[break][break] suddenly, it feels very hot and cold at the same time, in the middle of the park. white noise washes through her ears, and she can only see the face of Gunner Graves staring back at her, at those endless waves of blue.

Gunner moved automatically as soon as he saw what Mila intended to do, so in-tune was his body with her own. Despite being angry with each other for a week, the kiss was bruising in its force, electrifying in its expression of their need.[break][break]

One hand pulled her body against his as the other fisted her hair, angling her head to deepen the kiss. His tongue licked against her lips, then slipped into her eager mouth.[break][break]

A teenager yelling, "Ewww! Get a room!" snapped Gunner back to reality. He parted from Mila to glare at the insolent child and their friends.[break][break]

But before either of them could cause another scene, he wrapped his arm around Mila's shoulders to lead her away.[break][break]

"Maybe we should continue this back at my place," Gunner rumbled into her ear.

[attr="class","mila2"] with a fierceness that only mila was known for, she kissed him. relief bloomed in her chest when gunner kissed her back, fingers tangled in his shirt as she opened herself to him, moaning as she felt his tongue slide against hers.

[break][break] this kiss was unlike the others that they'd had. it wasn't driven by passion or desire, but rather, a feeling of wanting to avoid the feeling that had been building up in her chest. the blood that roared in her ears, the numbing feeling in her fingers.

[break][break] someone shouted somewhere, but she didn't care. she kissed him with reckless abandon, leg curling around his as she pressed herself against him, gasping when he pulled away.

[break][break] her eyes burned for a moment, a mix between disappointment and desire, but gunner was already pulling her away before she could say anything more.

[break][break] she shivered at the feeling of his breath against her ear, fingers tightening more around his shirt. she didn't pull away, just pressed her mouth against his neck, sucking at the skin there.
