The best shield is a sword. That principle drives Navy forward, cutting ahead of his fellows and making for the northern shore. There be monsters. Rocket’s sure to have left some powerful people in charge of defending the ships. Every moment these powerful people spend worrying about him, a man with nothing going for him except two fists and a couple of dragons, is a moment they’re not killing someone else.[break][break]
His roaring moon swoops down low over one of the ships, dropping him off. No one important looking’s around just yet. Trainer and pokemon get to work. They busy themselves beating up riffraff, waiting for a grunt to hurriedly carry the news to the big dogs.[break][break]
“This the best you got, Rocket?” He asks, standing over the groaning bodies of a few grunts. They’ll live. The sheriff has a policy of not killing people.[break][break]
“Think I’m gonna go rig the ship to blow, then. You boys best get out of here.” Turning to head below decks, he’s only alerted to trouble by a low snarl. Something’s got his roaring moon on edge. Turning, he moves to see what the wind’s blown in.

Zev was nearest to the ships when Team Rocket's comms came alive with chatter. "League agent on deck," they said. "Looks like Dewford's gym leader."[break][break]

He spotted the Roaring Moon first, its great red wings flaring as it lunged at the vessel's crew. Its master was putting up a good fight, knocking out grunts with ease. Zev's Corviknight brought him close, swooping low to the deck so he could leap off her back and land without trouble.[break][break]

A quick swap of Pokéballs recalled her into one and released his Hatterene. She giggled, ready for war.[break][break]

Zev charged Dewford's gym leader—a man he'd fought before, but at a different time, at a different age. Sun glinted off steel as the Rocket Beast drew a combat knife, swinging it with killing intent.[break][break]

Taking cue from her master, Hatterene summoned a SPRINGTIDE STORM to engage the Roaring Moon.

This mask has haunted his dreams. A man who never backs down from anything was forced to step aside, let someone get away. There’d been civilians all around. To escalate matters there would be to invite a disaster upon Dewford.[break][break]
It’s another time, another age. Here in this season of war, he is free to fight this man to his heart’s content.[break][break]
This is what he wanted. That thought is what spurs him to draw his knife, the cold steel reflecting the sheriff’s stoic determination. Their blades clash, metal skidding against metal. In the eclectic clash of flurried knives and a springtime storm, there’s no time for banter. This masked wolf has him at a disadvantage.[break][break]
Roaring Moon is powerful. Dragons by their nature are powerful. Fairies such as this giggling witch are natural enemies of dragonkind. Navy has time to only say one word, two syllables that flow together into disaster.[break][break]
“Earthquake!” Smaug does not question. A black dragon has beaten discipline into the prehistoric beast. His tail slams into the ground. The deck beneath their feet rumbles. A tidal wave is kicked up beneath them.[break][break]
Stumbling back, his left hand goes for a black crystal hanging on his belt.[break][break]
Just a few seconds as the sea quakes. That’s all he needs.

The effect of EARTHQUAKE on the ship was disastrous. The hull tore asunder, metal shrieking with ungodly noise. Violent shockwaves rocked the vessel, sending its crew stumbling. Zev nearly lost his footing, but he rooted himself with tendrils of void-black crystal.[break][break]

After staggering from the initial assault, Hatterene rose into the air with her psychic powers. Levitating above the deck, she let loose a DAZZLING GLEAM at her enemy, hoping to hit both man and Pokémon.[break][break]

In the chaos, Zev spied the gym leader's hand as it reached for a crystal on his belt.

In the chaos, something slips free from one of Navy’s pokeballs. The beast can see it’s a greninja. If it has hostile intentions, the little frog doesn’t make them known. Instead, he scrambles to save the crew. Those who are nearly tossed overboard are instead thrown to another ship. If compassion is weakness, this miniscule example of greninjakind is the weakest of them all. [break][break]
Navy himself doesn’t even notice this is happening. All Navy can focus on is the toss. One of the few compliments his father ever gave him was that he’d make a hell of a pitcher. The black crystal flies and lands on Smaug. Crystals spring forth, adorning the dragon in a crown that resembles the earth. Rushing upon feathered wings, he weathers the gleam meant for man and mon.[break][break]
Snarling, he flies up onto the offensive, leveling his iron head at the malevolent witch.[break][break]
“The hell are you?” Navy finds time to ask when his eyes spy the tendrils rooting the wolf to the ship.

If Zev noticed the Greninja's work, he did not show it. His focus remained on the battle at hand, watching with a satisfied knowing as the Roaring Moon Terastallized.[break][break]

Hatterene took the attack head-on, using the moment of contact to cast MAGIC POWDER on her foe. Yet the Tera typing remained, the phenomenon preventing the move from taking hold.[break][break]

With a cry of frustration, Hatterene Terastallized in turn, luminous crystals coating her body. The crown adorning her head twisted into the form of a smiling face, darkly faceted.[break][break]

The gym leader's question cut through the noise of battle. Zev turned his gaze upon the other man, though his face was hidden, his mask revealing nothing. When he spoke, the voice changer built into his mask transformed his words into a distorted, inhuman growl.[break][break]

"Your nightmare."[break][break]

Then two more tendrils whipped out toward Navy, dark serpents seeking blood.

Tendrils reveal the words to be no idle boast. If they want blood, they find it. Instinct leads him to cross his arms and raise his hands. Navy’s sygna suit affords some small measure of protection, but it is nowhere near enough. With his black dragon licking its wounds and its brood untamed, he has no partner Pokemon to pair with. It’s little better than fancy clothing.[break][break]
Fancy clothing now torn. Grunting in pain, he tries to step back as the ship rumbles beneath them.[break][break]
“My nightmare’s got—” Whatever quip he wants to say gets cut off by Smaug. His Roaring Moon has to be directed. Raising his tail, the dragon prepares to slam it down.[break][break]
“Swipe!” That catches the dragon’s attention. Launching like a missile, his claw aims a breaking swipe across the witch’s frame.[break][break]
Pulling out his own knife, he starts to swipe at the hellish tendrils. Panic sets in deeper as his blade hits metal.[break][break]
“Bastard.”

The whip-like tendrils cut into Navy's Sygna Suit and the flesh of his raised arms, drawing jagged lines of bright blood. His counter with the knife was true, but the steel snapped in two against impervious crystal.[break][break]

It should remind him of a poisoned landscape, of beasts armored in black metal, of Necrozma's detritus shaped into weapons and shields.[break][break]

The BREAKING SWIPE struck Hatterene cleanly across her face, sending her tumbling into a pile of crates. With a maddening shriek, she rose, her tentacle throwing the cargo off her without a thought.[break][break]

That same tentacle arced as she lunged at the Roaring Moon, aiming to topple it with BRUTAL SWING.[break][break]

Beneath their feet, the ship groaned and dipped farther into the ocean, unable to maintain its form under the onslaught of Pokémon attacks.[break][break]

Zev glanced around. Regardless if the battle ended now, he would have to retreat. Frustration rose into his throat like bile at the realization.

The first time Roland struck this man, they fought in the dark. He hadn’t entirely been sure what he’d seen that night. Under the light of a Hoenn sun, there’s no denying the texture of the dark metal. It reminds him of ore he delivered across a battered wasteland.[break][break]
He can’t let him get away. He can’t. Though the black knight is no friend of Eternatus, he is still too dangerous to live.[break][break]
“Smaug,” Navy cries, “here!” Once, his commands were ostentatious things. Battle has refined them into something practical. Hatterne’s brutal swing serves as a parting shot. Navy beats a tactical retreat, bleeding as he jumps onto the flying dragon’s back.[break][break]
“Quake!” The word echoes again from his lips. “Quake!” Now, crowned in the glory of the earth, the feathered dragon slams his claw into the deck. Red feathers stream behind him as he flies into the sky. From up here, Navy can see a handful of ships to which his nightmare can turn. Circling, he waits to see what the masked knight does.[break][break]

The second EARTHQUAKE cleaves the ship, forcing Zev to recall his Hatterene and summon different Pokémon—two of them.[break][break]

First to emerge in flashes of light was his Hydreigon, who swooped low so Zev could jump onto his back before the ship submerged. Next was his Gengar, his oldest companion, his most honed weapon.[break][break]

Smoke did not need commands. He pursued the Roaring Moon and its rider. Seeing the Earth-type crown upon the former's head, he lashed out with GIGA DRAIN.[break][break]

Zev followed at a distance, waiting to see which ship this League interloper would attack next, or if he would let himself be chased off.

They end up in the world’s most high-octane waiting game. Navy waits to see where the masked beast will run, the beast comes right for him. Having never been one for waiting around, the sheriff takes the initiative. Roaring Moons aren’t the best at turning on a dime, but Smaug gets the job done. A second Pokemon comes free of his ball the instant Navy can spare the hand.[break][break]
Fafnir has been with Navy for almost a year now, but his presence has always felt incidental compared to the other dragons in the horde. With so many of his mainstays out of commission, it’s time for him to get some action. He understands the situation with a mere cursory glance.[break][break]
Navy begins a dive down to another ship. Hot on his tail is the beast and his Gengar, who aims to steal life force from Smaug. Anyone can tell the dragon’s taken a beating. He only endured this long thanks to the crown he wears, which is now being used to hoist him by his own petard.[break][break]
“Cover us!” Navy orders over the whipping winds. Somehow, the ghost dragon hears.[break][break]
He throws up a light screen behind the sheriff. In the long run, it won’t save Smaug, but it’ll keep him in the fight. It’ll help him carry Navy down to the ship, get off one last tremor before the dragon’s down for the count.[break][break]
Fafnir floats down, giving the Gengar a condescending laugh and a cheeky wave. The dreepy that dwell within his cheek mimic the gesture, raising two faux-fingers in peace signs.

Zev followed Dewford's gym leader to another ship, Smoke several paces ahead of him. Though his attack dissipated harmlessly off the LIGHT SCREEN, the Gengar was not deterred.[break][break]

He fired off a HEX at the Dragapult, while at the same time, Zev's Hydreigon opened his maw to spew DRAGON PULSE at the same foe.[break][break]

On the back of the Dark-type, Zev had drawn close enough to the next ship that the Roaring Moon had chosen as its landing strip. It seemed the gym leader was not ready to quit his assault, even with a monster like Zev harassing him.[break][break]

"After them," Zev directed his Hydreigon, pointing at the deck. The dragon dove.[break][break]

Once they had landed, he dropped from his Pokémon's back to intercept his enemy. The grunts on the ship scattered, calling upon their own Pokémon that could fly or swim to get them to safety.

Fafnir feels that. Between the hex and the dragon pulse, the beast’s twin-pronged assault leaves him reeling. Perhaps that’s why the dragon doesn’t seem particularly keen on a high speed pursuit down to the ship. Instead, he lingers back. Let the brutes, meatheads, and brawlers get up close and personal. The twin dreepy prepare to fire.[break][break]
They leave a smoke trail in their wake, cascading through the sky towards Gengar and Hydreigon. They pursue the gym leader and are themselves pursued. Hovering amongst the clouds, Fafnir decides he can take a momentary vacation. He’s done his part. He’s taken some licks. A dragon doesn’t get to his age without a little wisdom, and the man beneath that mask seems the sort to send him to an early grave. [break][break]
Smaug collapses as he lands on the deck. Luckily, Navy’s got another flier. He’ll make his escape. Terrifying as the beast pursuing him is, he only has so many Pokemon.[break][break]
If he’s facing his nightmare, then it’s time to pull out the big guns.[break][break]
“Shuwen!” Navy cries, releasing his Urshifu from the pokeball that houses him. He comes out with a running start. His burned bear kicks up, launching himself up at the Hydreigon. His relentless close combat barrage is a flurry of a thousand fists aimed along the dark dragon’s body and sensitive necks.

Zev's Gengar intercepted the twin Dreepy, luring them away from the new battlefield of the ship's deck in an aerial pursuit. He flew this way and that in a looping, winding pattern, giggling the whole time.[break][break]

And then, suddenly, PHANTOM FORCE pulled him out of this realm; he vanished from sight in a puff of smoke.[break][break]

Below, Hydreigon screamed as the Urshifu struck him with the flurry of fists. All three heads retaliated with HEADBUTT, attempting to hit key weak points of the mythical bear.[break][break]

Zev skirted around them, running for Navy. As soon as he neared, he threw his own punch at the gym leader's head, a precise jab aimed at the temple. The void-black crystal encasing his fist did not gleam, even in the harsh sunlight.[break][break]

Earlier, steel had snapped in half with the force of impact against Zev's carapace. The damage to bone and flesh would be even more horrific.
