[attr="class","star2tsu2"]The sight is dreadful. Memories of a primordial sea come rushing to the forefront of her mind as she glimpses the skull, overcome with a foreboding that steals her breath away. She shuts her eyes, awaiting the end of this dream, and yet...[break][break]

She can hear Navy's voice clearly, opening her eyes again only once her mount lands atop the wall beside him. Tsubaki glances him over to assure herself he's alright, while Tsutsuji hisses at the chill of his mount, sending vibrations through the masonry. It is only for the sake of her Master that she does not take flight immediately, so unpleasant is the cold.[break][break]

"Navy... in the sky, is that...?"[break][break]

The crescent of a moon shines with an ethereal light overhead. It is a menacing show, a dragon so large and intimidating that it dwarfs the size of the actual moon even despite how high it soars. One look, and the familiar shape of Freya's favored pokemon all but confirms to her that the appearance of this beast is not a coincidence. [break][break]

The appearance of a Garchomp means nothing out of context. And yet, in this dream world filled with loose connections and hidden meanings, it can't be sheer chance that their first test is the signature pokemon of her mentor, while the one that follows is that of the woman that's now taken her under her wing.[break][break]

She narrows her eyes, readying a ball as she rallies her Noivern.[break][break]

"Tsutsu, bring me to the skies! Let's do this, before the city's razed!"[break][break]

She tosses a pokeball as she leaps onto her Noivern's back, and the keystone in her glasses frame shines. [break][break]

The Venusaur that emerges is gigantic already for her species, but soaking up the ambient dynamax energy from the fallen Garchomp, she grows taller than the rooftops of the city. A groan of pain, and she readies the flower on her back, taking in moonlight...[break][break]

“Yes.” Somehow, the simple word sounds odd rolling off his tongue. There’s a posh note in his voice, picked up somewhere along the way. Twenty years is a long time to live among a people. You pick up their habits, their ideas, their culture. Twenty years is long enough for a street kid to convince himself maybe, just maybe, he can be a lord.[break][break]
“Let’s get up there. Iron—” Navy’s hand goes for a ball that isn’t there. Not anymore. Not after Matias speared him like an animal hunted for sport. A quiet voice whispers in the pale rider’s mind, unseen.[break][break]
“I would have followed you to the end. I would have been a champion’s Pokemon.” Ironsides speaks within this dreamy mist. “But no more. Never again.”[break][break]
“Close, but no. He’s nowhere near as proper.” Beneath him, the Glastrier searches for a way up. Without the gift of flight, he must forge for himself another path. Blowing his cold breath, he freezes the air. In so doing, he creates a rainbow bridge of ice trailing upwards into the sky. Slow Dancer lives up to his name, running nowhere near as fast as Tsubaki.[break][break]
A spear of ice forms in Navy’s hand. He throws it, piercing a feathered wing.[break][break]
“Coming, Baki. These things are mean! Shoot it!” Roaring Moon responds in kind, casually flicking scales the size of apartments down at the city below. It pierces into buildings, ruptures the wall. Even still, no one screams.

Tsutsuji flutters upward with an elegance befitting her name, her home the skies. She hurls toward the invader of her domain, shrieking ultra-sonic insults that make feathered-scales explode into showers reminiscent of flower blossoms. The beauty of the scene deceives, violence all-encompassing.[break][break]

Tsubaki readies her arrows, shooting straight up at the giant, and yet so far away is the moon that you cannot grasp it from the sky, she cannot hope to pierce it with her bow. [break][break]

"We need to go higher!"[break][break]

Her Noivern concurs, and yet the falling shards of scale threaten to cut them apart if they head straight up. She circles helplessly in the air, trying to reach further, but is forced to fall slightly to Navy's height.[break][break]

"Navy! You can clear the way, can't you?"[break][break]

Tsubaki shouts out to the only man she can trust. It's a desperate plea. Already she can feel the heat rising beneath her, Ayame's blooming flower already taken in the energy needed for a Solar Beam. She only needs a clear shot.[break][break]

Were he riding Valkyrie, he wouldn’t question his capability. A few shots from atop his swift mount, coupled with a shadow ball or two, would make short work of the falling scales.[break][break]
Slow Dancer is a different matter entirely. Without the blessing of speed, Navy’s forced to calculate shots from a steady angle. Reaching up, he fires at the scale. It shatters, a chain trailing behind it. Roaring Moon looks like a blood moon painted against the sky. The chains fall short of him.[break][break]
“Gotta keep climbing.” He spirals up, conscious of the Venasaur below. If he obstructs the path of the solar beam, this is all for nothing. So Slow Dancer climbs. Navy shoots. When the scales fall, the horse jumps and meets it head on. With a billowy blow of icy breath, it shatters. Before it falls into splintered pieces, Slow Dancer turns and jumps back to the iced road.[break][break]
“Just need…one clean shot.” His finger squeezes the trigger. A chain shoots up, extends around the Roaring Moon, pulls it downward. It screams as it starts to fall right onto Ayame.

From below they look stunningly beautiful, deceptive for their wicked edge. Spiraling upward, a bridge made of ice reflects the light flowing from Ayame's flower, casting it in all the colors of the rainbow. [break][break]

C'mon, you got it..."[break][break]

Tsubaki mutters under her breath, cheering Navy on while she scans the air overhead. Shards of broken scales fall like blades, and she looses and arrow at the biggest chunks, ensuring the flak that falls on the village below doesn't harm any innocents with its size. Her Noivern circles, chirping incessantly, til Navy feels a sudden dip in pressure.[break][break]

The shared senses of Tsubaki and Tsutsuji reach out and grasp at his own heart, establishing a telepathic link to let him know it's time, giving him the chance to get out of the way.[break][break]

It's all-encompassing.[break][break]

A beam of light with the power of the sun itself erupts beneath them and fires toward the skies. For a moment it's like midday as Ayame unleashes her Solar Beam, light reflected from the moon redirected upward, to challenge its own impostor. All at once, the bridge Navy has built dissipates, crumbling in on itself under the heat.[break][break]

"Navy! I've got you!"[break][break]

Before he can fall, a hand reaches out to grasp his, Tsubaki swooping towards him at max speed on the back of her dragon to pull him onboard.[break][break]

His Slow Dancer bucks the pale rider off. He’s sent flying, only to be saved by Tsubaki. The horse seems to jump straight down, landing without missing a beat. Her Noivern’s blast is blinding. Hugging her tight, he shields his eyes. Even if everything here is uncertain, shifting, ever changing, he would still not risk permanent damage to his eyesight.[break][break]
“Arceus…that was a nice shot.” How can he resist complimenting the apple of his eye? They’re afforded a moment of peace. Staying there with her, looking out over Motostoke, he favors the city with a sad smile. Once upon a time, they had all lived, laughed, even loved here in this city together. Even the contingent of Rockets had found something approaching acceptance here.[break][break]
And with the opening of a dog’s restless eye, they were cast back into the waste land of reality. Forced back into the battlefield. How foolish, to think they might get to rest.[break][break]
“You know…I’ve been thinking…you’re right.” He’s not proud when it comes to stuff like this. He’ll admit someone else was right about something if it’s true. “I’m tired of hating. We had a better world here. I miss it…I miss this. Even if the details are different.” There’s a sadness to the older man’s smile.[break][break]
“Whoever controls what this mist shows us is a rotten bastard.”

[attr="class","star2tsu2"]The giant's form dissipates into smog, the constitution of its dynamax form folding in on itself. Roaring moon hurtles through the sky, disappearing from their midst like an actor exiting stage left, a departure with the logic of a dream.[break][break]

Tsubaki gazes down.[break][break]

All she can see below is the erosion of time itself. Or, depending on the viewpoint, the poisoned earth of Eternatus's toxins. It's a hamlet scarred by its history, unable to move on. Unable to thrive, because it lives with that harsh reality day in and out, unable to escape it. The ruins of previous years when the toxins encroached further than the last, when homes and crops and villagers were swallowed, are all laid bare - they live alongside them. [break][break]

They can't run away from the harshness of this world.[break][break]

And yet...[break][break]

She grasps Navy's hand close to her.[break][break]

"Navy... you couldn't settle for another world, could you?[break][break]

"You want purpose. You want something to fight and die for. Here, that purpose is so clear. There's no question what that fight is. It's perfect. You can put everything on the line for that one struggle, and you can be at peace. [break][break]

In another world that's not so harsh you still push yourself toward that end, but... it'll never be like this again, will it?"[break][break]

She stops, gazing at the ruins of the rooftops as they slowly circle back to the ground. The destruction is more than they've ever faced. It will take years to recover. [break][break]

And yet there's nobody in the streets crying, running, cheering that they're still alive in spite of it. [break][break]

It's eerily empty.[break][break]

"In another world, a world that's still living... you'll never be able to settle on that one thing. You can't put everything on the line. Unlike Galar, Hoenn can and will survive you, even when you give your life for its sake. That's what you regret, Navy. You've only got one life to live.[break][break]

"It's not like this place, that'll be gone alongside you. You can't commit to a singular purpose there. You can't sacrifice yourself, trusting that another crisis won't go unsolved because you're not there.[break][break]

"That's what you hate..."[break][break]

She squeezes his hand and lets go... and then turns, to look him in the eyes.[break][break]

She doesn't know how much she can even say.[break][break]

There's this inkling in the back of her mind, that these dreams are in their heads, that these nightmares come of their own fears, these visions manifest of their own neurosis. More than a dozen dives into the Deep Sea, multiple encounters with the breath of a dreaming God, and she wonders... just how much of this is intentional, and how much of it merely facilitates a conflict with one's own self?[break][break]

Perhaps it's better she not speak it aloud.[break][break]

That he's conjured a greater evil in his head to fight is no accident, but a matter of coping with the fact that God does not care about them. If he must have something to fight, best he not know its true face.[break][break]

"... No matter what. Don't let hate consume you. Don't keep fighting, and forget how to live."[break][break]

“Baki…” He squeezes her hand. It feels good. She’s no Crystal, no Gabe, no Melody. She’s Tsubaki, and she’s who he needs. “All I know how to do is fight.” He hates the admission. It troubles him. Looking out across the waves of a beach house the League has given him, he did not once stop to enjoy the sunset. He simply eats, calls someone up. He finds some task every day. Unlike some, he is not overfond of pretentious delusion. This is a dream. It is a dream he has dreamed many times before, although always alone. Sometimes, the dreams of this day, this time, this place are so vivid that he forgets he’s supposed to be Navy when he wakes up.[break][break]
“Let’s see if they’re here.” He walks into the home he made with Melody and Tsubaki. It’s just as they remember the place. A painting of the whole family sits on the wall. Crystal and Raphael smile down at him. They’re forever cast in that light, looking on impassively at the father that never came home.[break][break]
They’re not here.[break][break]
A cold voice laughs.[break][break]
“Didn’t think it’d be that easy, did you?” It’s Navy’s own voice, from Navy’s own mouth. His reflection looks at them with scorn. “Take it from an old man, you don’t ever get what you want.”

The smell of a home she'd nearly forgotten, so nostalgic. A young girl has no use for nostalgia, but she's a grown woman now.[break][break]

She longs for days gone by, and a life she helped build. As a surrogate daughter, living alongside a woman who was like a sister to her, she helped raise the children that lived here. Taught them all the things their father should have while he was busy holding the weight of the world on his shoulders. How to fight, how to navigate the world around them. How not to let others step all over them. With such a domineering mother, they needed that advice. [break][break]

It makes her heart hurt, to think that's all gone away.[break][break]

Her eyes linger on the paintings on the wall. What she sees makes her remember, quite suddenly, that they're not back in this place, that it's all a dream. [break][break]

Their faces are wrong, replaced by the faces of surrogates in Navy's mind. One is her younger self, dressed as Crystal.[break][break]

She averts her eyes, doesn't say a thing.[break][break]

The sound of a man's voice from further in the house unnerves her, and she draws her bow immediately without thinking. She points an arrow at its source, tipped with the venom that birthed this dream.[break][break]

It's only the sight of Navy himself that stops her hand.[break][break]
