“Back so soon?” They’re on another battlefield, and still he has time to make his little jokes. “Glad to have you back in Dewford, Baki. The boys over in Dewford High missed you.” They’ve found themselves in a relatively quiet little corner of the battlefield. Ahead, they’re still figuring out how to get the door open. Rocket will be up to no good. There’s interdream mist spewing monsters out all over the island.[break][break]
In other words, it sounds like a good time.[break][break]
“Hope Freya’s been treating you alright.” It’s empty air. Of course she has.[break][break]
Navy urges his Rapidash, Silver Bullet, forward towards the mist. They’ve got to figure out a way to seal this little crevice, lest it spell destruction for everyone there.[break][break]
“The mist’s here this time. Pretty weird, huh? All this time, I thought it had something to do with Eternatus.”[break][break]
A pause. Ahead, some of the errant paradoxes roam.[break][break]
“Ready for a fight?”

[attr="class","star2tsu"]A horn thrusts underneath a Machoke, hoisting it into the air and throwing it clear across the cavern. The Audino it was fighting and its trainer look relieved, while the Rocket grunt cuts his losses, taking advantage of the confusion to duck into the shadows. [break][break]

Scolipede raises to its full height and eyes the trainer peacefully. The girl gives a silent nod of thanks before Tsubaki's Scolipede matches the stride of the sheriff's pokemon again, her trainer on her back.[break][break]

"Those hicks? Tell 'em to get outta Dewford for a few years and then talk to me!" She grins, calling out over the sound of battle.[break][break]

No hard feelings. They'd call her city girl, she'd call them hillbillies, and round and round it'd go. It was gentle ribbing, all in good fun. As much as guys at the school pestered her incessantly, she would loathe to be stuck on this island for the rest of her life if she ever happened to fall in love. [break][break]

That's why she never let them take themselves seriously, why she never got close. [break][break]

"You got soft since I left! Not even a month and you've got Rockets at your doorstep, again. They must've realized now was their chance, while I was gone!" [break][break]

She looks back at the man on his Rapidash with a smile, the very same pokemon she helped raise.[break][break]

He's older. There's a stray gray hair in his beard. He's working himself to the bone for the sake of this dead end town and nobody at League HQ even thinks twice about Dewford til the enemies are already at the gates. It's too late to build defenses or muster the troops. They're fighting a last stand again, like they never learned their lesson the first time.[break][break]

When she struck out on her own, she'd have preferred to come back on her own terms, not by the League's incompetence. [break][break]

"... Yeah, I'm ready. Can't believe I left to bring the fight to Rocket and they end up here, right where I left you. Almost makes me wanna take it back..."[break][break]

She pauses, looking at the fighting at a distance. [break][break]

"... Almost! Guess we'll just have to beat 'em so hard that this time they're too weak to come crawling back, right?"[break][break]

“This island’s been here for months anyway.” He admits with some apprehension. “Just another thing the League didn’t bother to help with ‘til it’s too late. If they just sent me funds and a few people, we wouldn’t be here buying time for people to open the tomb.”[break][break]
His eyes catch something walking out of the mist. It’s not the first Iron Thorns he’s seen. For what it’s supposed to represent, the thing is downright tiny. Urging Silver Bullet forward, his horse goes from a trot to a full run in record time.[break][break]
Good thing he’s wearing this sygna suit, he’d have a hard time keeping his head on straight otherwise. The flare blitz slams into the creature before it could give Tsubaki trouble. Exploiting knowledge gained in his fight with Kouji, he forces the creature back into the interdream mist. It sweeps over the creature before it can even perform its opening move.[break][break]
“Look out. Damn things are crazy if you let ‘em attack.” Pulling on the horse’s reins, he surveys the landscape. The mist is starting to roll in. If his experiences last time mean anything, which they surely do, that means trouble.[break][break]
“We’ll get you back to civilization soon enough, Baki. Promise you that.”

One last time. One last time to laugh, before war's once again on their doorstep. That's all she wanted.[break][break]

"Civilization's the place they're coming from, Navy..."[break][break]

She responds, her smile fading entirely. [break][break]

It's the mist, she thinks. The ever-familiar feeling of becoming detached, unstuck from this time and place hits her all at once. It gives her vertigo, and she stops to retch off the side of her giant insect. It's a feeling you never quite get used to, a feeling that makes you feel like you're no longer human.[break][break]

She pulls herself back astride her Scolipede, catching eyes with something in the swirling fog. [break][break]

"This... is just like Granite Cave..."[break][break]

She pants, sweat forming on her brow. [break][break]

This feeling of foreboding is unlike no other, as if the world is about to be swallowed by the deep. Dreams, or reality. She doesn't know what's what, but all she knows is that she feels like she's Falling.[break][break]

Scolipede spits out sizzling venom at a silhouette that ventures too close to this side of the veil, keeping the mushroom growling at them at bay.[break][break]

“Listen up, Baki.” He urges Silver Bullet to get close. She obeys, cantering up to the girl he all but adopted. Reaching down and putting a hand on her shoulder, he tries to let her know it’ll be alright. She’s not alone. There’s some element of post-traumatic stress to how she processes all this. He sees that now. She was a child tossed about by forces beyond her control.[break][break]
As are they all.[break][break]
They’re overtaken by the mist. It’s noxious, a chalky smell. Fake fog smells similar, he learned since he created his gym. It’s sweet, but not savory. Enough to make him puke. They’re taken by the mist before he can pull her up and ride out on top of his horse.[break][break]
When he next opens his eyes, he’s back in Galar. They’re on the streets of Motostoke. Silver Bullet’s nowhere in sight. For a solitary instant, he thinks he’ll look down and see Valkyrie under him.[break][break]
Instead, he sees two feet. They’re planted on solid ground. The people of the city bow their heads at the two.[break][break]
“Pale Rider, Lady Sue.” Smallfolk love giving honors to their lords when those lords treat them well. Navy always found it amusing, the name they gave Tsubkai. Galarian peasants little understood the intricacies of foreign languages. Lady Sue seemed easier to learn than Tsubaki.[break][break]
“Oh…” Feeling his own face, Navy realizes that, once more, he is older. Once more, they are under a poisoned sky. “Oh.”

[attr="class","star2tsu2"]The vision of two eyes swimming in the mist grows clearer. They seemed foreboding, almost evil at first. Now, they are welcoming, almost hopeful. Almost as though they dream of hope at last, after a lifetime of believing such a thing was impossible. [break][break]

The weight of that gaze makes her avert her eyes at first, but she feels indebted to return that gaze. She blinks, and looks at her. An ordinary woman standing there with a smile on her face. She's older, her face is filled with the dust of the apocalypse, but that doesn't diminish the shine in her eyes any.[break][break]

"Sue..."[break][break]

Tsubaki clenches her fist on hearing that name again. It brings back painful memories of a life she's wanted to forget. Though unable, she's been able to put that pain in her past, and use it to grow. She can fill a hole left in its wake, and if it will make any difference at all, she'll carry the memory to her dying days.[break][break]

It was just a dream. It was just a dream, Tsubaki.[break][break]

"Yes... Of course. It's lovely to see you again, Maris. I'm so relieved to see you again."[break][break]

She hates herself. [break][break]

She can't mend the disparity. [break][break]

She has memories of it, the day this woman died. She watched it happen.[break][break]

And the girl she took the place of when this poisoned world died. [break][break]

Crystal. [break][break]

It means she must be here, too. [break][break]

She must hate Tsubaki for taking her place. [break][break]

Or is Hoenn the dream and this reality? Has the life of Navy, sheriff of Dewford, simply been an illusion? Is he back in the real world? Who can say where the waking realm ends and dreams begin. They’re lost in the mist. They’re everywhere all at once, at the end of time.[break][break]
It’s just a burning memory.[break][break]
“We just have to tough it out until we can find an exit, or until we wake up. Either way…I hope we don’t stay here for long.” It’s a pained effort to sound detached. All they have to do is take a few steps up the castle steps and they’ll be at his manse. Doubtless Crystal and Raphael will be inside.[break][break]
“…fuck…” Why does he find it so hard to act tough all of a sudden? Leaning against the wall, he looks up at the dead sky above them.[break][break]
“Baki, I swear I’m gonna kill whoever keeps doing this. Don’t think it’s Eternatus, but whoever it is…they’re gonna die for doing this to us.”

Two decades underneath a poisoned sky. She has spent the majority of her life here. [break][break]

It feels wrong to have grown up here, become so used to the hardships of a world that was doomed from the very beginning, and yet... she doesn't blame anyone. She has no hatred in her heart for this fact. It is natural to her, something she has come to terms with over this long stretch of time stranded in this world.[break][break]

That she would have ever woken up again was never something she expected. It just wasn't in the cards for her. She was given a new life that she was able to fit into, and finally, for the first time in her life, felt at peace. [break][break]

But all things come to an end. [break][break]

The poison you accept into your heart merely drives that end closer and closer. [break][break]

"No. You mustn't, Navy. You let hate rule you and lose yourself in it and I know Melody would never forgive you."[break][break]

She speaks in a stern tone more like a sister than his protege, scolding him for his reckless words. [break][break]

It’s just a dream. He can’t accept this. He can’t allow himself the luxury of thinking that what he’s seeing now is a real, true reality. If he looks back, he is lost.[break][break]
Fortunately, this dream is a merciful one. A war horn sounds. Navy recognizes that sound, he’d remember it anywhere. When Motostoke was besieged by a dynamaxed horror, that horn would sound. Turning towards the city walls, he sees it: a monstrous Garchomp. The dragon looks down as if right at him. Waiting. It roars across the field.[break][break]
“No one’s moving.” Ordinarily, the sound of the war horn is the signal for an army to assemble. No one around them seems to care. Peasants and nobility alike go about their day.[break][break]
“…no one’s moving.” He sounds aghast. Instead of running for the castle, he runs to the stable. There he finds—[break][break]
“Where’s Valkyrie?” In its place is another horse. A fine steed that look like it was carved out of a glacier. It regards him with a level stare, like it’s expecting him to mount up.[break][break]
“Son of a bitch. Baki, let’s move out.” How like him, to always think of the fight first. That’s the sort of animal he is. Always fighting. Moving forward. Never stopping. Spurring the horse forward, he sees at once that it is a much slower beast than Valkyrie.[break][break]
“He’s a real Slow Dancer.”

A mercy for this man who could never truly call himself alive except in the heat of battle, a man who had put down a family without putting down roots. He could never still the beat of his heart for even a moment, always fighting for a tomorrow so that in the present he might live, always off riding, looking for that next fight, that he might find peace in the midst of war. [break][break]

His soul was a soul that was always in motion, always moving. [break][break]

This happy ending was one he could never settle for, never allowing himself anything less than fighting for their sake to the very end.[break][break]

"Go."[break][break]

She lets her hand fall from his shoulder as he runs to the stables. She'll buy time.[break][break]

Reaching over her shoulder she readies her bow and nocks and arrow, locking eyes with the gigantic Garchomp. She's seen that murderous gaze a million times, every time Vortigern has locked eyes with his Master. It's a primal hunger, something ancient. [break][break]

"Hungry, are you?"[break][break]

She looses her arrow, sending it down its gaping maw and down its gullet, letting it taste the toxic of a primordial sea. [break][break]

That should sate it, til Navy returns.[break][break]

When the arrow strikes, half the dragon’s face seems to disappear. In its place is the face of a skeletal dragon. Venom oozes from its fangs. It smiles down at her, as only a creature of nightmares could smile. The dragon laughs, a laugh that seems to carry the black dragon’s cadence.[break][break]
Out of the stable rides a Pale Rider. Atop a white horse, the name fits even more than it did when this was more than a dream.[break][break]
Just wait. Just wait it out. The dream will end. Don’t think about her. She’s not waiting for you back there. If this is different, what else could be different?[break][break]
Thousands of thoughts run through his head. Adjusting to the pace of this new horse, he looks back to Tsubaki. Whistling to catch her attention, he gives suggestions.[break][break]
“Baki. Take to the air. I’ll keep him held down.” His mount jumps. What he lacks in speed he makes up for in jumping power. This carved glacier clears a roof and lands upon the ramparts. Icy breath blows out across the ramparts. [break][break]
The gun is still there. They’re at least ten years into their Galarian trip within the confines of this dream. Taking aim, he remembers old reflexes. Firing once, twice, thrice, he chains down the great beast. It roars as it realizes the chains won’t come loose.[break][break]
“Shuwen!” Navy shouts, releasing his battle bear. The bear climbs. He punches. For a moment, it looks like they’re doing alright.[break][break]
Then, the earthquake starts.

"'Course. As always, right?"[break][break]

She grins at him. Though she's older, she hasn't lost the exuberance and the audacity of her youth by any measure. A flash of light, and her Noivern lets out a screech that rattles the earth beneath their feet and their hearts inside their chests.[break][break]

"Tsutsu, can ya get me up close and personal?"[break][break]

She leaps onto her dragon's back as it lets out a purr like static discharge, eyeing the giant looming overhead. It's a challenge, putting their mutual trust on the line. She doesn't even mind that the sun hasn't set yet. [break][break]

For this girl, she'll do anything.[break][break]

A few frantic beats of her wings and wind whips up behind her, carrying the woman crouching on her back into the air. Ten years of honing her mind and body, she's at the peak of her strength, capable of doing so many things her self in another world could only dream of. [break][break]

Because this is a dream...[break][break]

She hastens to remind herself, as she draws another arrow and readies it.[break][break]

Tsubaki is afforded the luxury to ride the skys atop her wyvern. This stray Garchomp is much too busy writhing about to care for her. Beneath Navy, the ground rumbles. It trembles. It cracks open, splitting the wall. Someone screams, but Navy sees no one on the wall besides himself. Suddenly, as he realizes they alone must fight this monster, the dream seems more a nightmare.[break][break]
They are held in place by the quick thinking of the mount. Slow Dancer, as Navy decides to call this lumbersome beast, plants his feet into the stone wall. There, he freezes his hooves in place. As the ground rumbles, he stays steady. Holding on for dear life, Navy fires again. His hands are a frantic flurry of loading, reloading, firing. Taking a step to the side, realizing he’s stuck in the saddle, reloading again. Firing.[break][break]
Shuwen has disappeared in a flash of light. Once gigantamax evolution was more than enough for both the human thar shares his soul and himself. Instead, he is content to mega evolve. Wrapped in white light, the bear emerges with blue fur. After the battle beneath Callan Young’s aqua chamber, much of his upper chest and face are scorched red, like a prodigy of the single-strike style.[break][break]
Crying out in fury, his fists do not stop, even as the wall tears itself apart.[break][break]
“Make your shot count, Baki!” The sheriff begs.

They are the impetus for an enraged roar from the beast, triggering its famously violent temper and nothing else. They weren't meant to do anything but that.[break][break]

Tsubaki pulls back the string of her bow one more time as the dragon's breath whips up a hurricane. [break][break]

"G-gh!!"[break][break]

It's so hot it burns, blue embers catching her clothes on fire. She feels as if she's set alight, but she endures. If not for the pain she wouldn't feel alive. Hurtling straight for the Garchomp's wide-open maw, toward the source of those swirling flames, she readies herself for her last-ditch attempt to save the manse that she calls home.[break][break]

"Tsutsu... NOW...!!"[break][break]

She screams with exertion, trusting the dragon beneath her feet to carry her to where she needs to be to fire the sole shot that matters.[break][break]

The arrow flies from her bow. Tsutsuji flaps her wings, summoning a violent whirlwind to guide it toward its mark— [break][break]

—Right toward the dragon's eye socket, now just a gaping hole. [break][break]
