Not quite what she meant, but it suits him perfectly. [break][break]

This is a sight for the fate of his soul, but he treats it like an ordinary street brawl and all his pokemon join in. There's nothing refined, nothing straight-laced. Because of course, they're both the same. Tsubaki stands there for a moment as the chaos erupts and all of both Navidson's pokemon come out of their balls. She smiles, and lets her own pokemon do the same.[break][break]

"I can't let you have all the fun," she quips back, and shields her eyes from the sun overhead.[break][break]

Her Venusaur collects droplets of sunlight, sending a bundled beam of energy toward a Charizard. The Fire-type absorbs the solar energy and returns a jet of flame at her Dragalge, who shrugs it off and swamps the whole battlefield in a wave of sludge. Her Noivern flies overhead and drops her Mawile on a Skarmory's back, and they spar between themselves with blades and horns in the air. Gengar puts an Urshifu to sleep, but it's awakened by a Blissey nearby and tries to retaliate with a punch, to no avail.[break][break]

"Navy, duck!"[break][break]

She screams out, forgetting that they both share a name.[break][break]

A kick comes careening at both of their heads at once, aided by her Zorua's extrasensory.[break][break]

Both take to a knee at once. The salvo misses. Each in turn takes the opportunity to do the same thing. They charge. They punch. They kick. Tsubaki’s Navy has the advantage of experience. His shadow is cast from a mold roughly three years into their Galarian adventures. They’re roughly the same age, but the real deal has 17 years of experience on his shadow.[break][break]
He cuts to the left. Forward jab. Back. Bobs to the left. A flurry of four punches. Back again. Ducking around the shadow. Dodging fire from Sol and water from Hattori. His own Pokemon protect him. Silver Bullet falls at his feet, knocked out from all of the compounded stress. She’ll live. She has to live. It simply wouldn’t do for her to die in a dream.[break][break]
Musashi floats about, thrusting his arms forward. No one can outspeed a Scizor’s bullet punches. Tormund raises his arm high, ordering an attack. Those around his cat look down at it with puzzled eyes before going back on the offensive.[break][break]
“Gotta be more specific, Baki.” The real deal says as he takes a punch to the gut. His retaliation is three hits to the ribs of the shadow. His doppleganger spits up blood through his mask.[break][break]
“Now we’re having fun!”

There's only one of him. There can only be one Navy. [break][break]

And yet there's two, both of them caught up in a violent struggle between each other without any way to tell them apart. She clenches her fists in frustration, watching one beat the shit out of the other in senseless violence. [break][break]

Ayame's vines wrap around the fake Voyager, and he sets her alight. Only her thick fat saves her. The false Ironsides overhead performs a barrel roll and knocks Suzuran off his back, sending her plummeting down straight onto Tormund's shadow, knocking them both out. Tsutsuji collides with the false image of Sol in midair, and they both claw dangerously at one another. Sagisou, confused, seizes the opportunity to swallow the real Musashi and trap it in a world of darkness, foul dreams, and curses.[break][break]

Tsubaki ducks out of the way of an errant water shuriken. Letting her frustration get the best of her, she stops trying to make sense of their entangled bodies. [break][break]

"Oh, fuck it!"[break][break]

She aims an empowered sweeping kick under both of them, not wasting time sorting one from the other. [break][break]

The real Navy would forgive her.[break][break]

Lucky for him, someone knows him. Someone knows him very well. When the kick comes, Hattori snatches him out of the way. A false Hattori, one with two eyes and far less experience, lays defeated far off in the distance. This mad mosh pit threatens to consume them. Ironsides, merely a ghost now, rains spikes down on top of their heads.[break][break]
“Get him, Bullet!” He cries at his Rapidash. She lowers her head, snorting and building up momentum. Jumping up and over the heads of fallen Pokemon, she smashes into the bird with a flare blitz. It’s enough to knock him out, knock him off, turn the lights off upstairs. For just a moment, in the middle of all this chaos, the bird takes the time to look at Navy.[break][break]
His eyes voice a silent goodbye. In another moment, he’s gone. He disappears into interdream mist. Never again will he soar, never again will he roll his eyes. Ironsides is gone, a candle lost in the wind. Another casualty of this war.[break][break]
Only duty carries him forward. The fight brings him back to his feet. Howling mad at his own weakness, Navy turns to his shadow. His raging fists find the man’s face. They pummel him. Too late does he notice the attack coming for Tsubaki.[break][break]
“Baki!” Navy cries. It is Hattori, as always, that saves her. He substitutes Tsubaki for the body of a fallen Pokemon. Sol’s Flare Blitz strikes a false Voyager instead of the girl. The dog growls his protest but says nothing else. Just now, Pokemon are falling like flies.

Tsubaki opens her eyes, in the arms of Hattori once again. This black frog is always looking out for her with its one remaining eye, it seems. She looks up at it with a smile. Better to keep its attention on the battlefield and not her, but... she appreciates its concern, nonetheless. [break][break]

All around them, chaos blooms as a crimson flower. Pokemon throw themselves at each other recklessly, and there's no regard for honor. It's exactly the type of battle a field of both Navy and Tsubaki's pokemon revel in, winning at all costs. When it comes to a scrap in the street, you don't care about honor. You care about living to see another day. Whether that's the life of a street urchin, the life of a former Rocket grunt, or the life of a man who doesn't have anything else but a fight to look forward to, day by day, the type of pokemon they nurture are all at home here.[break][break]

Ayame, covered in a false Voyager's flames, lifts him up with a hundred vines and slams him back down with a suplex before she succumbs to the heat.[break][break]

Sagisou's shadow explodes outward, bullet punches filling it up like a balloon being filled with air, before she succumbs to the Scizor's frenzied anger inside her belly. [break][break]

Sumire ensnares the legs of the false Navy, hissing angrily as she drags him to the ground, all while the actual Navy punches him over and over.[break][break]

Tsubaki takes one look at it all, and places her hand on Hattori's head. It's slimy, slick with moisture. Fitting for a Water-type Pokemon. But even so, she pets him gently, offering nothing but compassion in the midst of a bloody battle.[break][break]

"Keep that one eye open, watch out for yourself. Keep throwing yourself my way and I'll get you killed."[break][break]

Hattori offers a proud shake of the head, as if to say ‘no’. Much like the man who trains him, the frog is stubborn – too stubborn for his own good. When his Lord’s daughter is in mortal peril, he will do anything to keep her safe. Anything to fight tears from his Lord’s eyes. Anything to bring an end to this.[break][break]
More Pokemon are swarming them. Hattori doesn’t know how they can endure all these blows. His water shuriken fly left and right. His hands never stop moving. Whenever he sees a punch or a normal type attack coming his way, he shifts into shadows. For a few precious moments, he exists between the realm of the living and the dead. One foot in the grave keeps the other in this world.[break][break]
“I’m glad you two are so close.” Navy manages to make a joke out of this predicament. “Can’t imagine what I’d do if my lead Pokemon and you didn’t get along, Baki.” That serves to make the frog blush. Whenever Navy compliments him, even with all his battle scars, the greninja still manages to look the part of a child.[break][break]
“You know, kind of weird how he has all of the Pokemon I had back then. He doesn’t have Shu-”[break][break]
“ORAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!” Shuwen towers above them all. This false Shuwen, a Shuwen from both past and future, stands above them like a giant.[break][break]
Hattori’s eye goes wide. Only the fire kindled in his heart by his Lord steadies his resolve. Looking to Tsubaki, his eye asks a silent question: how in the world do we fight that?

She knows he won't back down, that saying anything will just harden his resolve to the contrary. But why does he, like his master, provoke this reaction in her?[break][break]

Her thoughts are cut short abruptly by a wild battle cry.[break][break]

It is ever-so-familiar, and yet there's something eerie about it. She looks up at the towering bear, a sinking feeling in her stomach as she realizes the scale of the battle in front of them. Many of her pokemon lay scattered on the ground in front of her, but the rest regroup immediately, bracing for a fight.[break][break]

"Navy... hope you've got somethin' as big as that too!"[break][break]

She backs up, amber eyes appearing from the shadow at her back, the ghostly form of Koyo condensing on her shoulders once again. Sumire bares her fangs and hisses in the false Navy's face, but the threat of the giant is too much. She retreats from him to encircle her master's legs instead, this time bracing her instead of tangling herself up in them. [break][break]

Overhead, soundless wings beat as Tsutsuji swoops in, glaring up at the beast. [break][break]

"... it's you three left, huh..."[break][break]

She murmurs the words communicated telepathically under her breath, and her Noivern snorts approvingly as she lands, gashes slick and flowing crimson freely between her scales. [break][break]

That leaves a few pokemon each, but none of them powerful enough to take on this threat on their lonesome. Hopefully Navy can cook something up...[break][break]

This battle seems a losing proposition. Navy understands now, as he did in Galar, the true power of an Urshifu. When they walk the world the size of a normal man, they are mighty. Through skill, they can go toe to toe with creatures from myth. Having sipped from a poisoned chalice, they are the equal of any legend Navy has ever known.[break][break]
How, then, are they to win?[break][break]

“He can do that fancy G-Max Rapid Surge. Only, he can do it more than once. Eternatus is good like that. Pretty much any barrier’s useless against him. There’s no such thing as fighting a defensive battle.”[break][break]
Hattori breathes in, closing his eye, concentrating. The shadow of his Lord melts, absorbed into the bear. Navy and Shuwen are, after all, mirrors of one another. It stands to reason their shadows would take this far more literally.[break][break]
“We gotta go all out, like the wolf would do. No point in acting like a shield.” Shuwen’s fist is surrounded by water. He brings it down upon them.[break][break]
“Ice beam!” Hattori saves all their lives with the ray of frost sent up at the fist. It freezes, throws off the aim. One strike that threatened to cascade into a thousand stops as his frozen hand smashes against the ground.[break][break]
“Baki! Go!” Hattori’s bought them a moment. Just a moment. It’s up to the rest of them to take advantage of that opening.[break][break]
“Arceus, where’s an ice-type trainer when you need him?”

Tsubaki steps onto her Noivern's back, the beast letting out an uneasy purr that rumbles their surroundings as the woman's leg nicks her open wound. There'll be time to fix that later, but if they don't act fast... [break][break]

Tsutsuji flaps her wings wildly, enough to gain enough height, but she won't be able to fly them in close. She's too beat up from the battle for careful maneuvers it'd take, and she's too big to sneak past something so big that can move so fast. It's only to buy them height, as she sends a gigantic updraft with the force of a typhoon behind it... [break][break]

Sumire coils up like a spring, and lifts all of Tsubaki's weight on her head. She can smell the girl's trepidation, her unease. And yet, the girl doesn't waver in the face of it. She's tired of running away, tired of protecting herself and leaving everything else behind. A violent thrust of every muscle in the snake's body throws Tsubaki up into the air current... [break][break]

Tsubaki flies upward, toward the gap opened up by Hattori. She glimpses the malice in the eyes of the bear, a fearsome beast that reflects the fighting spirit of his master. Even in this maligned reflection, she can see it as clear as day like she never could before. It's only in the midst of battle that he borrows his father's eyes.[break][break]

She winds up. [break][break]

Koyo wreathes her hand in malice. [break][break]

Everything wells up inside her. The feeling of resentment for a normal life she could never accept, the feeling of being trapped on an island where she must hide herself from Rocket's goons, subject to walk through the dreams of Eternatus forever, continuing to lose herself as she continually evades the only thing left for her. [break][break]

All of that was something she thought she'd escaped until today.[break][break]

And now, she faces Eternatus again, or some false mirror image of it. It's responsible for Shuwen's giant stature, if not his aggression.[break][break]

She can't seem to escape the pull of the sea, but that's alright.[break][break]

It means she can't miss this shot![break][break]

"Sorry, Shuwen! But you're gonna have to face my OWN fighting spirit![break][break]

"Koyo! NOW!"[break][break]

A blackened beam of energy vents off of the girl's arm, containing all of her resentment to now, all of her self-hatred, all of her bottled up feelings that she's sick and tired of hiding. It's like a sword made of violet light, corrosive venom from the girl's heart that could burn away even the bear's accumulated infinity energy. [break][break]

Twenty years basking in the light of the core, infinity released all at once into one last-ditch attack.[break][break]

Hattori feels weak. Fighting a mirror of oneself, shadowing his lord, living with twenty years of accumulated worry. None of these are easy feats. Each of them would exhaust a Pokemon. He has had to bear the burden of all three. Yet he stands tall, as tall as a giant here in this ruined world. His Lord dwarfs him near three times over. They stand and watch the battle between Tsubaki and Shuwen. Only when that blast lands true and severs its connection to Eternatus, ending the battle before it can turn into a slaughter, does the frog allow himself to collapse.[break][break]
Navy, ever the worrier, bends down to check his shinobi’s pulse. Above them is a magnificent light show. Shuwen’s false mirror has returned to the size of a normal Urshifu. He’s a mere Urshifu. A normal specimen.[break][break]
His own bear rushes out to meet him. Having gained a second wind, the true specimen fights with different eyes. Those eyes are not the eyes of Joshua Navidson. They’re Navy’s own eyes. There is no hatred behind his blows, no malice for the one he must fight. The true Shuwen slams his fist into his opponent because there is no truer path to peace or understanding. Let one bear the curse of being a warrior, that the many might know a better life.[break][break]
He strikes so that children can argue online about pointless things. He strikes so that old ladies can fuss about the price of groceries at the supermarket. He strikes so that CEOs can play their vicious game, a parody of the old world order. He strikes so that a world where only the strong survive will not triumph.[break][break]
In the end, the false Shuwen falls. At last, too, does the true Shuwen collapse. Navy’s all out of Pokemon. The world turns to white, pulling Tsubaki back to him. They’re alone again in the whiteout, which soon explodes into color. Once more they sit among stars and galaxies.[break][break]
“Don’t really understand what any of this is supposed to mean.” Navy admits as he sits on the swirl of Andromeda. “But I guess sometimes dreams don’t have a point, do they?”

Tsubaki unleashes all of her resentment and lets it go. [break][break]

She falls. Falls to where Navy is, where her ghost pokemon catches her and sets her gently down. She crouches and lets out a sigh, reaching over her shoulder to run her fingers through the kitsune's fur, brushing a layer of ice off of him. [break][break]

He stares back at her with amber eyes. Not knowing the source of any of those feelings, only knowing the emotions she's channeled through him. He carries no judgement. This place holds no meaning. What happens in a dream is just that. [break][break]

He is just a vehicle to vent feelings she cannot release any way else. It does not hurt. It does not influence him. Whatever he becomes in that moment is merely a reflection of her.[break][break]

That knowledge sustains him.[break][break]

"... I don't dream anymore."[break][break]

Tsubaki starts, and then realizes what she's saying. Averting her eyes for a moment, she diverts toward some other train of thought.[break][break]

"But, when I did. Dreams were where I could be myself. You are you, without anything exterior. You, untethered from reality. You, utterly you, without a world to shape you into anything else."[break][break]

She raises her hand outstretched, and lets the melted droplets of frost fall from her fingers. A mere droplet of water flies off, between them, floating in space. [break][break]

"Water takes the shape of its container. But what shape is water without one?"[break][break]

She watches Navy curiously. [break][break]

He's not sentimental, or abstract. He likes to see results, and dwells only on mistakes. Even so, she wonders about the nature of this dream, and what it means for him.[break][break]
