“Look out!” The younger, truer Navy shouts. He dives at Tsubaki, dropping his gun. The Pale Rider raises his gun a heartbeat too slow. As Navy pulls down his charge, softening their fall with his body, a chain blasts through the portrait. Crystal, whether Tsubaki or someone else, is no more. The picture is shattered. On the other side lies the galaxy. Humming from the other side of the wall is a pulsing magenta organ.[break][break]
“Smart.” With a whistle, Spectrier rides up. Its rider mounts up, urging it to blast the walls away. They’re left floating on a stony floor. Nothing outside matters. It’s purple emptiness. The whole galaxy stretches before them.[break][break]
“I don’t know why I hate myself enough to attack, Baki, but let’s fight back, huh? Twelve pokemon to his seven. We can do this.” Standing up, Navy throws out his first. Roland, even one-armed is dangerous. The horse rounds and its rider throws out Vortigern. Roaring, the dragon charges them.[break][break]
“Now that’s not a smart move.” Holding up a black ball, Navy terastallizes Roland. Adorned with a fairy crown, he launches himself at the dragon with wicked pink energy dancing across his blade.

Caught up the shock of seeing him draw the gun at that moment, she didn't even try and stop him. Who was she to argue, if Navy himself decided she wasn't worth saving?[break][break]

... But as the floor rushes up to meet her, she realizes. He's no longer Navy. Only the man who lunged forward to protect her is the man that saved her. Over and over again.[break][break]

"You're heavy," is all she can muster, picking herself up and dusting herself off as the world falls away. [break][break]

There's an unspoken appreciation in her voice, but a rose doesn't say thank you. No matter how much you admire it, it'll retain its thorns to the end. That simply remains unspoken. Navy knows her better than anyone, save her pokemon. He'll understand what she means.[break][break]

A hand goes to her waist as she stares down the man she can no longer recognize. A man who would kill someone like her. [break][break]

"... I'm okay with that. It makes this easy."[break][break]

She tosses out a ball, and Sumire lets out a terrifying hiss that makes even the Garchomp balk. Without a moment's delay, she spits sizzling venom at the dragon to burn through its rocky hide, softening its natural armor for Roland's attack.[break][break]

The great dragon disappears in a blast of energy as Roland closes the gap. With all the recklessness of a man who knows he has nothing to lose, their opponent escalates things. In an explosion of sound and fury, Vortigern comes out swinging. One scythe blade catches the spit from Sumire. The venom bounces off, burning the ground around them. Roland’s blade clashes with the other scythe. With the dragon’s attention turned upon him fully, one arm must contend with two scythes.[break][break]
He handles it like a hero would, with human technique. Vortigern only knows strength. Even this dream-like replica of the dragon is content in his strength. Strength can be a weakness. His blows leave him open, or do not maximize the effort put into each blow. Roland’s blade slides from one scythe to the next, elegant as he skirts around the dragon’s blows. Pink blades nick at his flesh again and again.[break][break]
“I wouldn’t do that to you.” Navy reassures the girl at his side. “I hope you know that. Not ever. That ain’t me.” And the Pale Rider seems to agree. Skirting around the battle in front of them, he aims another chain shot at the two trainers from atop his steed.

It's a flurry of blades, flesh and metallic. But her fangs are daggers in the dark, scarcely even known til they meet their mark. [break][break]

She lunges for the dragon's neck as it's distracted by a flurry of swordsmanship, closing her jaws around it, strong enough to crush steel.[break][break]

Tsubaki turns to Navy with a cocky smile.[break][break]

"You think I don't know that?"[break][break]

The fact that he insists, that he tries to reassure her anyway, is a comforting thought. He hasn't lost himself in this dream just yet. He hasn't been swayed by his dark counterpart, by all his hatred manifest. [break][break]

"You practically fawn all over me. It's stifling. But you wouldn't be you if you didn't. That's why I don't have to worry... [break][break]

This ain't you."[break][break]

Tsubaki raises her bow. Two decades of expertise finally able to be utilized in this body, caught up physically to her mental capacity for it, she hones in on the false Navy's arm. It holds his gun. She's staring down its barrel. But, if she can rely on Navy for anything, it's him doing whatever he can to protect her from harm, which means... [break][break]

... she takes the shot, without blinking. [break][break]

His own gun is at his side again. Navy knows it is a waste of brainpower to question the providence of dreams. Instead, with the growl of a trained gunslinger, he raises his firearm. Two on one are bad odds. The rider knows it. How could he not? Navy would say that in his sleep.[break][break]
The chain is met by another chain, sending it flying to the side. It gives Tsubaki the opening she needs. When the arrow is fired, Valkyrie jumps. Her swift speed means the arrow is planted in her belly rather than the Pale Rider’s neck. She’s much better equipped to deal with arrowheads forged from the Black Knight.[break][break]
“Someone’s gotta dote on you.” Navy manages to quip before Valkyrie opens her maw. This isn’t, it seems a 2 on 1 battle. The Spectrier launches a shadow ball aimed their way.[break][break]
Between Sumire’s bite and Roland’s blade, Vortigern is skewered. Navy’s knight drives a blade up between his ribs. Crying out in pain, the monster’s death throes are mighty to be hold. This is no true Vortigern. He would not die this smoothly.[break][break]
Neither, it seems, does this figment intend to die so gently. He waves around, crying in agony. The scythes flail. He is a hurricane. At its center is death. Roland has to drop his blade and jump back, lest he fall victim to the devastation.

Sumire squeezes harder, drawing the life from this apex predator. Stony armor, bone hard as rock, muscle with all the momentum of a mountain behind it. None of it can escape the crushing grip of her jaws. She greedily crushes its windpipe, thanking the knight for its honor as it steals away the breath of this monster with cunning.[break][break]

And yet, it's the surprised shout of her Master that distracts her from the kill.[break][break]

"Sumi!"[break][break]

She loosens her grip, and the Garchomp's strength tosses her aside. An errant blade cleaves her deep as she flies through the air. Viscera sprays across the stars, a cloud of black blood in her wake. She hisses violently, and a black cloud of haze billows from her mouth to cover her escape. [break][break]

Tsubaki gazes up at a rearing Valkyrie, Navy's steed of twenty years. That he'd allow his pokemon to take the arrow fills her with indignation. She had seen this man feed Valk carrots every day, trim its hooves, wash it, saddle it. The care he put in, just for this impostor to use it as a shield...[break][break]

She blinks, waiting for the hooves to come down.[break][break]

... but she's dragged into her own shadow, sparing her that fate. Shimmering amber eyes emerge from the dark behind the false Navidson, Tsubaki along with it as she nocks another arrow, spiteful fox on her shoulder. [break][break]

Roland and Vortigern do what their kind do best. They battle one another to the last. A knight must slay a dragon, and a dragon cannot exist unless the knight acknowledges him. They charge again, lost in their own corner of the battlefield. A moonblast gives him cover as he rips his blade free. Even now, with air unable to reach his lungs, the dragon doesn’t relent. If he dies, he will die gloriously.[break][break]
Something bubbles in Tsubaki’s shadow. Another mirror, a reflection of Navy’s other stalwart ally, readies himself. Hattori within this vision of Galar still has both eyes. That distinction will prove their salvation before the day is done. As Hattori lunges from Koyo’s shadow to strike, the real article intervenes. A mirrored Hattori emerges from Koyo’s shadow as well, two dark kunai clashing. His dead eye faces Tsubaki as both Pokemon are sent flying.[break][break]
Her arrow is shot from the air by a pistol. There’s a reason guns outpaced bow. They take far less precision to shoot.[break][break]
“Gotta change with the times, Baki. Then again, you’re so stuck in the past it hurts.” The Pale Rider says with a grin.[break][break]
“True that.” A chain shot wraps around Valkyrie, making his horse whine. She bucks, almost sending her rider flying. “They’re pretty bad, huh?”

It's a reminder that talk is cheap. For all her talk of moving on toward a future of her own making, she's still stuck by a bow and arrow without even thinking. Entrenched in the history of a doomed world, just as she had in the ultra deep sea. She wonders if the black knight and the skeleton are battling even now in another space-time, and whether they even acknowledge their union at the tip of her arrows.[break][break]

They don't matter. She's not living for the sake of anyone but her any longer.[break][break]

"Yeah... now you mention it, you're right."[break][break]

This is a dream, after all. [break][break]

She raises her bow and pulls back the string. With a single fluid motion, the obsidian armor that constitutes the shape of the bow wraps around her arm and sets alight as pure plasma, refracting the cosmos around them like a kaleidoscope. Internal lights pulse like strobe lights, as she points her hand in the false Navidson's direction.[break][break]

"I should get with the times."

A breath is all it takes, and venom that pours freely from Tsubaki's arm congeals into a laser that scorches the heavens.[break][break]

Looking across the battlefield, Navy sees that the battle between Dragon and Knight is reaching its inevitably conclusion. Roland drops his blade. A blow struck him well and true. It is not, thankfully, the end for him. Navy is quick on the draw and recalls him. As he does, Vortigern slumps, dead.[break][break]
Two Hattoris now battle for Tsubaki while the rider struggles to recover. His mount was blasted away. Valkyrie goes back into the aether. Instead, the rider stands. There’s a hole in his heart where the arrow struck him.[break][break]
“Is that what you delude yourself into thinking it’d be like if the skeleton smiled on you, Baki? I don’t think so.” He smiles a mirthless smile.[break][break]
Ice meets ice as Hattori clashes with himself.[break][break]
“Looks like that’s one down. Maybe two.” Her father puts in.

The clash of two ninja, of a dragon and knight in the distance, seem so impossibly far away.[break][break]

"... Tired of feelin' like nobody sees the real me. They all see what they wanna see. Everyone I've met, including... you."[break][break]

She stares a hole in the man's chest. The arrow draws the scent of blood, and it makes it all too easy to locate him amid the chaos.[break][break]

Fangs lunge from the cloud of smog at his back, a bloodied, rippling mass of muscles bearing down on the false Navy from behind. Sumire lets out a violet hiss, unhinging her jaws, ready to swallow him whole. [break][break]

All she needed was a flashy distraction. [break][break]

The illusion cloaked over her arm disappears as Koyo attempts to douse him in a ball of collected curses, a sludge bomb thick as molasses. [break][break]

“Well, Baki’s gonna be her own person. Not what anyone else wants her to be. And I’m gonna help her do it. You…you’ll be stuck here. Whatever you are. Sure as shit not gonna let you back in my head.” He puts an arm around her protectively. The man before them stumbles to his feet.[break][break]
“We’re not done here.” Navy looks down at her and offers her part of the gun. There’s enough room for both of them to squeeze the trigger.[break][break]
“You ready to tell this guy to fuck off, Baki?”

“Sometimes, a dream’s just a dream.’ It’s a denial of his shadow. He knows there’s some part of him that felt that way, once. That’s not him now. It hasn’t been him for some time. This creature has grown from the Pale Rider before him.[break][break]
“But I guess I can humor you. Show some mercy. But what now?” He asks, looking between the two of them. Hattori’s still fighting for his life in the background. Two shinobis clash, both knowing that whichever one of them falters first spells the doom of the human they love more than anyone in the whole world.[break][break]
“We can be poetic and keep settling the score with Pokemon.” His defeated shadow offers. “Besides. We’ve got an eternity to enjoy ourselves. You two are sound asleep out there in the real world. …might wanna kill me and wake up soon. You never know if Rocket’s gonna grab your bodies.”

They're ensnared the same way Gabe would be...[break][break]

She shakes the thought and considers the fake's offer.[break][break]

"Nothing lasts forever. Eventually we all wake up from something. But let's make the most of it while we're here."[break][break]

That's her solution to this maze that goes on making zero sense. A land of dreams she keeps wandering into, walking into doorways and down hallways, turning down alleyways, and finding herself here at the end of a world that's long dead, in ultra space, in a dream, or somewhere in between. There's no logic or sense, only something she can't run away from, the only thing that's real.[break][break]

She wonders, if she had yet to accept that fact, would her shadow would be right here in front of them as well?[break][break]

Instead, there is no difference between her and that girl. The one who drank deep of that abhorrent decadence, the razing of Kanto. She wanted to destroy the world that made her this way, that gave her so much pain. All without realizing it, she made of herself exactly what this world she so-hated demanded of her, and participated in its fall.[break][break]

Her shadow is standing in this dreamscape right now. She's looking through her eyes. If she merely killed her, merely ran away, she might never recognize herself. Evading the truth, she could not possibly know how she might avoid becoming that wounded girl again.[break][break]

"Fight him. You gotta."[break][break]

She glances to Navy, convinced entirely that this is the only way. He's only himself when fighting, so it's the only way he'll see himself in this shadow and learn to accept, wholly, the worst of himself. The only way he'll recognize himself in the mirror.[break][break]

So that he can never become this shadow that glares back at him now, taunting him... [break][break]

He must fight.[break][break]
