Standing on the shore of the new island on Route 105, Zev scanned the sky for any sign of hostile Rangers or League officers trying to gather intelligence, attack Team Rocket operatives from above, or disrupt supply lines.[break][break]

The crime syndicate's comms line was abuzz with chatter, warning agents on the ground of the League's aerial teams. All agents in the field, from grunts to the upper brass, were tasked with shooting down any non-Rockets from the sky.[break][break]

A dark shape approached from down the coast, moving quickly through the air. As soon as it was near enough, Zev saw the shape for what it was: a Corviknight with a rider on its back. And that rider was none other than jack wainwright, dressed in a Ranger's uniform.[break][break]

Zev clicked his tongue. His Charizard took flight and unleashed a FLAMETHROWER at the oncoming pair.

Even amid the stress of conflict on this strange island, Jack felt at ease on Poe's back, scouting the shoreline for the League. His eyes scanned the shoreline, picking out a figure down below. Just as Jack nudged his corviknight to adjust course to take a closer look at the masked figure, a charizard launched into the air directly at them with flames issuing from her mouth.[break][break]

Jack gripped his pokemon's back with his knees as Poe pulled his wings inward and they performed an aerial roll. Jack could feel the heat of the flames wash over them but was shielding by the metal of the corviknight's wings. As they pulled out of the roll, they quickly turned the course of their flight back toward the charizard. Jack grunted in frustration as he noticed Poe's metallic wingtips glowing red from the opposing pokemon's attack. With another signal from his knees, Jack and Poe lunge forward to drill peck their flying foe.

The DRILL PECK hit home, drawing a bright red gash across Charizard's hide. She roared in pain and frustration, flapping her leathery wings in an effort to distance herself from her attacker.[break][break]

Down below, Zev pressed the key stone embedded into his wristwatch.[break][break]

Charizard glowed with a sudden and brilliant light—the light of Mega Evolution. Her scales blackened, her wings twisted, and the fire on the tip of her tail burned blue. When she exhaled, blue flames curled around her fanged maw.[break][break]

Redirecting her course, the Mega Charizard X flew like a missile toward Jack and his Corviknight, lighting up the air with another FLAMETHROWER as she neared.

Jack's brow furrowed as he saw the mega energy coalesce around the charizard, and Poe instinctively pulled back from his attack. In a flash the mega charizard was on them in a blaze of blue flames as the corviknight extended his wings and dips to one side. The gout of flames caught Poe along the underside of his body, causing him to scream in pain as his chest armor absorbed the heat and some of his wing feathers melted away.[break][break]

Furious, Jack reached into his pocket to grip his compass, pressing his finger into the corvitite stone until he could feel pain shooting up his palm. Brilliant motes of energy suffused the corviknight's body as it's chest armor grew in size and gained elaborate adornments. Where the pokemon's metal feathers had been glowing with the heat of the charizard's flames, they now burmed with an internal energy of imposing scarlet. Jack glanced to either side where glowing blade birds rested on the backs of each wing.[break][break]

"That's it, Poe, Wind Rage!" Jack shouted and the corviknight let out a triumphant scream. The raven pokemon gave one massive flap of his wings, sending hurricane-force winds at the enemy charizard.

Behind his mask, Zev's eyes narrowed. When did Jack obtain a Mega Stone? Through the Rangers? He had assumed the other man was too naive and laid-back to know how to battle beyond the basics, but Jack must have learned more about battling in the months he was in Galar.[break][break]

That changed nothing, of course. Zev would win because that was his intent, and nothing would get in his way.[break][break]

The G-MAX WIND RAGE slammed into his Charizard, sending her tumbling backward through the air. After the gale passed, she righted herself and charged, closing the gap.[break][break]

But before she reached the Mega Corviknight, she unleashed a SMOKESCREEN that filled the space between them with a thick, dark haze. She disappeared from view.

Suppressing a whoop of excitement, Jack banged his fist triumphantly on Poe's shoulder armor as the gale-force winds sent the charizard reeling. Using his knees, he positioned the corviknight to meet the oncoming attack of their foes but the sudden cloud of smoke blocked his view.[break][break]

Grinding his teeth in frustration, Jack gave the silent command to hover, hoping the charizard might overshoot when it came out of the smokescreen. Instead he leaned forward and whispered, "Sharpen up and let's give 'em a surprise when they come out of hiding." With a malicious grin, the corviknight slid his claws down the metal of his wings, honing the front of each wing until it gleamed with deadly sharpness.

Concealed by the smoke, Zev's Charizard dove down below the dark cloud. She emerged to daylight and the vast ocean spread out below them. With great flaps of her wings, she redirected her flight to bring herself beneath her foe.[break][break]

Above, Jack and his Corviknight waited, expecting a direct attack from the smokescreen. Instead, the Mega Evolved Charizard rocketed upward, electricity gathering in one clawed fist.[break][break]

As soon as the Corviknight was near, she unleashed a THUNDER PUNCH at the avian.

The only warning was Jack's body hair standing on end before he felt the impact of the charizard's thunder punch and his muscles seized as electricity coursed through his body. His breath caught in his chest and his vision went black until the energy dissipated, leaving Jack astride Poe's unconscious body. They pitched forward as the corviknight began its uncontrolled descent, his outstretched wings sending them spiraling toward the waves below.[break][break]

"Poe, please!" Jack's anguished shouts whipped into the wind as they continued to fall. As the sea rushed up to meet them, Jack ducked behind the raven pokemon's metal crest and braced himself. When the pokemon's limp form struck the waves, they pitched forward again and Jack flew from his mount's back and hit the waves hard. Scrambling to orient himself, his head broke the surface in time to see Poe's still unconscious form slip beneath the water. With a ragged breath, he reached for his belt and recalled the corviknight to his pokeball.

From the beach, Zev watched with cold apathy as Jack's Corviknight plummeted to the ocean, unconscious. The other man's screaming plea filled the air but stirred no remorse or guilt in Zev's chest.[break][break]

Instead, he continued to watch as the great bird hit the waves and Jack disappeared beneath them.[break][break]

A flash of light in the sky drew his attention as Charizard's Mega Evolution faded. Restored to her original form, she flew back to the beach and landed with a heavy thud in the sand beside her master.[break][break]

"Good job," Zev told his Pokémon, his words turned into a growl by the voice changer in his mask. He applied a super potion to her wounds, then recalled her into a Pokéball.[break][break]

Turning on his heel, he stalked away from the ocean, uncaring if Jack or his Corviknight survived.

Jack sucked in another gulp of air before the next wave broke over him, sending him tumbling in the sea again. Rage boiled in his chest as he struggled at his belt for another pokeball. Throughout all of the chaos in Galar, people had come together to help one another in the face of all the violence. Granted, some had opted to take advantage, but by and large regular people helped one another. Now, safely returned to Hoenn, Jack had witnessed first hand the brutality people were willing to inflict on one another solely for their own gain.[break][break]

The waves settled for a brief time and Jack took advantage of the opening to release his gyarados from his pokeball and climb up out of the water onto the pokemon's back. His arm muscles tensed and he could feel his jaw muscles strain as he sent his pokemon racing through the waves in a cold fury.
