Another Rocket patrol boat sunk, another mutilated human limb in Snacker's mouth. Josh wiped his racing helmet's visor clean of blood as the Sharpedo bounced along the waves, the water-type spitting out bone fragments his serrated maw could not crush in a timely fashion. With a powerful buck that threatened to unseat Josh, Snacker hurled the remainder of the half-eaten limb away, the blue sea's rough waves polluted red from war's stains.

Would it really be this easy?

On the horizon was another small platoon occupied with a League vessel. Sinking into the water deep enough that only the Sharpedo's fin breached the surface, Josh and his speedy shark zoomed toward the small Rocket ship's broadside with the aim to capsize it.

Aim as he might, Josh Devlin wouldn't reach the ship.[break][break]

A second Sharpedo, from the port side, would slam into Snacker. A brutal collision, the smaller and scarred up Marina trying to tear serrated teeth through rough skin with an Ice Fang to keep hold.[break][break]

On her back, in a wetsuit and with his own visor on, was Tempest.[break][break]

There was a flicker of recognition from the man but that was all the leeway the other man would get. Even gripped onto his own pokemon as he was, the close proximity for the moment was taken advantage of. An arm reaching out to try and pull the other from the saddle, out into the open water.

There was no way it was going to be that easy.

Josh let out a grunt when Marina and Tempest Quinn broadsided Josh. Though the Gym Leader's Sharpedo was bigger, a behemoth for his species, that didn't help as much as one would expect. Marina, trained for combat, had much sharper teeth than Snacker did. Even Josh was not immune to the collision, the Gym Leader forced to hold on tight to the shark's steering fin.

Livid from the sideswipe, Snacker bucked and flailed to desperately get out of Marina's jaws. The frost from the ICE FANG was an unusual blessing, keeping too much blood from escaping through the dark-type's wounds. Provided he could escape the foe's maw, the aquatic predator would open his own, venom dripping from the POISON FANGS lining the front of his mouth.

Even Josh himself was in a struggle with Tempest Quinn directly. The skilled rider, having practiced combat riding at Finnegan Yang 's school and at an expo near Verdanturf Town some time ago, looked to prove to Tempest that he was the region's mounted combat expert. As much as the bucking and flailing hurt, Josh's plan was that every sudden motion would cause the Rocket's hold on him to become weaker until a strong thrust dislodged him completely.

It was a battle of two experts. Josh Devlin with mounted combat, and Tempest Quinn with underwater combat. It made Temp's blood sing, the thrill of it all. The call of battle was something that sang in his veins even as Josh escaped his grip.[break][break]

Marina was also a massive beast of a Sharpedo. Smaller than Snackers due to being female, but they would both have qualified for Alpha. It was a shame, if only slightly; these two paired up would have made some eggs that were as hardy as they were fast and powerful.[break][break]

Poison joins poison, tacky purple oozing from Marina's Poison Fangs as she gnashes and chomps, trying to grasp the other pokemon's fin.[break][break]

Tempest isn't one to give up, even with his lost grip.[break][break]

He reaches for Josh again- not to get a hold of him, but for his face. To try and rip his breathing equipment free.

After backing away from one another, the two sharks bounced along the surface toward one another at frightening speeds. It was a giant game of chicken: which one would turn out of the way first to try to sideswipe the other? It was Marina that latched onto Snacker first, but the grip wasn't the greatest; it gave enough room for the two to chomp into one another. Venom seeped from both sets of fangs, Josh feeling sweat start to seep from his mount's steering fin.

As the two Sharpedo bucked and flailed to try to desperately get loose of one another, the water around both became polluted with venom and blood, making a fall from the combatants' dark-type steeds even more dangerous than it already would have been otherwise. A sharp flail would cause Josh's hands to slip off Snacker's steering fin and into Tempest Quinn 's lower arms. Even if the impact were to dislodge his assailant, some of Josh's breathing equipment was displaced. He would have to fix it after steering Snacker away from Marina, which could leave him and his poisoned Sharpedo open to a devastating follow-up.

The viciousness of the attacks landed Josh Devlin practically in Tempest's lap. It also knocked him off his ride, jostling the both of them. Grunting, Tempest grabbed for Josh once again, to try and drag him with him into the polluted water below.[break][break]

He landed with a splash, poison and blood soaking into his suit. At least his eyes were covered; the last thing he needed was to be blinded by the poison.[break][break]

If Tempest managed to drag Josh off, he would try to put him in a headlock. Tempest was a big man, standing over six feet, and was pure muscle. He was a self defense combat expert in Rocket, who worked to teach Grunts basic self defense techniques when he wasn't on missions or waging wars.[break][break]

The goal of this was to try and drag Josh underwater, to drown him.[break][break]

Marina, meanwhile, did not let up. Even as her own poison tinged blood weakened her and seeped into the water, she was trained for this. Gnashing teeth parted long enough for her to try and Slash against the other's hide.

Tempest and Josh brawled above Marina's back. The Rocket comfortably sat astride the shark, while the Gym Leader awkwardly faced her. The foe's skill in hand-to-hand combat would bestow him with a golden opportunity, wrenching Josh off Marina and into the blood-filled, venom-filled waters below. The Mauville Leader took as deep of a breath as he could before being flung beneath the polluted water, the disgusting fluid filling his suit. While Tempest would not be able to leave Josh in a headlock, she would be able to prevent him from surfacing, keeping a strong hold on him as he struggled for survival.

He only had one option.

With a surge of adrenaline, he shoved Temp aside enough to pinch the Key Stone of his MEGA GLOVE with his two right fingers, a blinding glow of purple-pink light perhaps giving him the window he needed to escape the hold. Even if that wasn't enough, the added speed and power behind Snacker's ultra-fast AQUA JET post-MEGA EVOLUTION would almost certainly free Josh and leave Marina in the dust, letting him get back in the saddle and in his element.

Oh, two could play at that game.[break][break]

Tempest narrowed his eyes, the flash of light from the Mega Evolution making it hard to see. He trailed after Josh Devlin as they both fought to get to their mounts. If only he could have kept the other under longer, choked the air out of him. Then it would be one less enemy to worry about.[break][break]

But his fingers brush his own mega keystone, secured on his wrist in a bundle of bracelets.[break][break]

Energy bursts again right as Tempest gets a hold of her. He pulls himself back onto her back and presses close to her sharp new body.[break][break]

"Don't let him get away!" It's muffled by the rebreather in his mouth, clenched between his teeth, but Marina surges after the other pokemon.[break][break]

If she gets close enough, she intends to Crunch down on her prey.

The gap Josh had opened up let him fix his slightly displaced equipment, though the damage had already been done; even he was shaking from the venom and blood-polluted water that sloshed around the bottom of his gear. He felt like he was in control of the battle; all he had to do was thrust his Sharpedo's steering fin around and charge.

Before he could commit, a second brilliant light enveloped Temp and Marina, the Rocket meeting Mega Evolution with Mega Evolution. With how long their SPEED BOOSTS had lasted, there was not a watercraft in the world that could go faster than these Mega Evolved sharks were. To Josh, it felt like riding on a hurricane, a primal, destructive force capable of flattening anything it touched.

With dangerous speed, Josh wheeled his Pokémon around. Seeing Marina's wide open fangs, he felt he knew the Rocket's plan. Rather than get into close combat with the Mega Evolved foe, the Gym Leader leaned in and dug his heels into what little of the shark was behind him. With a powerful flail that startled the rider, Snacker bounced toward Marina in a LIQUIDATING charge. Though he would be able to avoid being stuck in Marina's maw this time, those deadly teeth still tore through the water-type's side, further reddening the seas around them.

For anyone less than Tempest, master of the sea, and Josh Devlin, master of the race- this would have been too much. Too much speed, too much danger. But Tempest only tilted his head back to laugh, the sound being lost in the rush of the wind, as the two sharks slammed into one another. The Liquidation hurt like hell; had she not just started bursting with her mega energy, she would have been flagging by now. Knew that the other shark must have been the same.[break][break]

Tempest did a mental recounting of what moves he knew his pokemon had mastered. A shame that so many of them were useless or less effective against her own kind- well, no matter. Tempest trusted they could take Josh and his pokemon down.[break][break]

The Ex-Gym Leader gave his pokemon another pat on the side, urging her forward.[break][break]

The speed was getting too much for rush tactics.[break][break]

So, instead, she tried to dip in and Slash the other pokemon when she got close enough.

Tempest's experience as a Gym Leader could have been largely what kept him so evenly matched with the Master of Faster. With their SPEED BOOST peaking, the Mega Evolved sharks no more than streaks of blue light zipping across the surface, Josh felt he had at last gained the upper hand. This kind of speed was testing his own limits; he had never ridden anything this fast in the water in his life. Every turn whipped the rider to one side, making even him experience dizziness.

He had to end the battle now, and the best way he knew how. "Snacker, AQUA JET!"

The Mega Evolved Pokémon expelled water through the valve on his rear with maximum power, the rider screaming as he held on for dear life. Turning toward Tempest and Marina, Josh's Sharpedo kicked up a massive spray of mist, making it difficult to see at close range. He gripped his mount's steering fin tightly as bhe braced for a violent impact.

The brutal exchange earned a roar from Snacker, the light of Mega Evolution fading. The Infinity Energy powering the transformation was also the only thing keeping Snacker from going belly up in the moment. Controlling the weary shark was a struggle, and far too great of a risk to continue the bloody battle. Tilting his mount's fin hard to one side, Josh turned the Sharpedo around and let him dictate the pace of their retreat.

HQ was not going to be happy with the Gym Leader's checkered performance.
