"I was!" Josh chirped back, still coming off the adrenaline high that Ares subject him to. "All powered by Dragon Dance! If you think that looks fun, you should teach it to Apollo." Being yanked around by a flying mount's g-forces wasn't for everyone; for some, even flying on a Pokémon induced motion sickness.

"It's just a matter of finding one big enough," the Gym Leader replied with a nod. For some Pokémon, Josh had to look all over Space-Time Distortions to find a specimen large enough. For others, like Tyrantrum, the fossil needed to be significantly smaller than the average specimen. That was something he would likely have to contact a breeder about, as he did not know of a reliable source of unusually small Pokémon in Hoenn.

The two split apart as wild Pokémon caught their eyes. While Rkyer worked on capturing an Umbreon, Josh caught sight of a passing Mandibuzz that looked quite big for her kind. While they were neither the fastest Pokémon in the sky nor the easiest to tame, it was a ride Pokémon he did not have at his Gym.

Josh whooped loudly a second time as Ares entered another swift DRAGON DANCE, the Charizard's tail glowing purple once again. The wild MIRRORED the fire-type's dance, catching the Gym Leader and his Charizard off guard. The added speed let the dark-type get within pecking range, a trail of blood dripping from the dragon's belly. Not tolerating such a low blow, Ares sliced toward the bird with THUNDERPUNCH-fueled claws. Their foe's screech was Josh's cue to drop a Poké Ball onto the Mandibuzz, following it to the ground. The Charizard landed with a huff, Josh sliding down to prepare the application of Hyper Potion.

So he had read the emotions right. It was good that he was getting better at the whole emotions thing. At least being able to read them anyway. He still couldn’t feel emotions but felt he understood them enough in order to fake them.

"Yes, I think I'll do just that," he agreed with the other's comment about teaching his Pokémon Dragon Dance. It would definitely come in handy on missions, something that could be used to catch his target off guard. Outside of that... well, his mentor had once joked that he could be a bit of an adrenaline junkie. Whatever that meant.

His mention of size got him thinking. If he remembered correctly, Mauville Gym's biggest attraction was their non-traditional gym challenge that involved racing Pokémon. So his mention of size probably meant he didn't want to add a Pokémon to his team unless he could ride it. That's what he figured anyway. He didn't ask, though, choosing just to nod.

Seeing his own catch attempt as successful, he turned his attention towards the younger male to see how he was doing. He turned just in time to witness the Mandibuzz manage to land a hit on Ares before the Charizard retaliated and Josh captured the bird Pokémon in a Poké Ball of his own.

Realizing both of their capture attempts were successful, he followed Josh towards the ground but, unlike Josh, didn't land. Instead, when Apollo was about a foot above the ground, Ryker jumped off. Not that it was that much of a distance considering his own height. Leaving Apollo to keep an eye on things from the sky, he turned towards the younger.

"That was a pretty nasty hit Ares took. I hope he wasn't hurt too badly," he said as he moved to retrieve the Poké Ball containing his newly captured Pokémon. Might as well since they were down here anyway.[break] Josh Devlin

"Even if you don't plan on riding, it's such a strong and versatile technique for Pokémon to have," Josh continued as he finished applying the dose of Hyper Potion to Ares. Even after the medicine took effect, the Pokémon looked stressed enough for him to withdraw it, sending out another Pokémon. While the critter wasn't a flying one, it was another one that wore a saddle and appeared to be quite large for its kind. "Crash, my Boltund," the Gym Leader introduced the canine that was as tall as a short adult human. The electric-type let out a bark that sounded like an Electro Ball detonating.

At first glance, Crash seemed to be obedient and affectionate, giving Josh kisses. He laughed, gently petting and pampering the Pokémon for a minute or two before the electric-type crouched to let him climb aboard easily. The Mauville Gym Leader really did rein up almost every single Pokémon with the right size, shape, and strength, didn't he?

It was definitely a technique worth looking into. "Sounds good enough for me," he said as his thoughts strayed to teaching Apollo the move. It was something that would give him quite the edge, especially when it came to his career. Never again would he have to rely solely on Apollo burning everything down or using wind to tear through everything, both of which were a bit too destructive.

Coming out of his thoughts, he watched as Josh healed up his Pokémon. However, his Pokémon still didn't seem too happy. They looked like how people looked when they had a lot of stuff on their plate. That was the best way Ryker knew how to describe it.

Josh seemed to realize this as well and returned Ares to his Pokéball, only to send out a Boltund instead. Though he hadn't had many chances to see a Boltund, even he could see that this one was a little bigger than average, big enough to be used as a ride Pokémon.

The sight of the Pokémon already saddled up reminded him of something.

He didn't have a land Pokémon that could double as a ride Pokémon. None of his land Pokémon were big enough. Not even Hades was big enough. He supposed that's what he got for being so tall, though.

"Crash is impressive, though I must admit I don't have a land Pokémon of my own that can be used as a ride Pokémon," he told the older male.

Hopefully, that wouldn't be too much of a problem. He could still fly low on Apollo, he supposed.[break] Josh Devlin

Dragon Dance, on top of being used to go incredibly fast, was a wicked battle move. The added speed allowed its wielder to slash with its claws with surreal force. It was an attack that was a lot more precise, and certainly less destructive that a breath weapon.

"Who knows, maybe we'll run into one for you out here," Josh replied, trying to keep a positive attitude. "Believe me, it's worth having one, even if you have Apollo. They're much easier to have precise control over than a flying Pokémon. Can be useful in tighter quarters."

It would not take the two long to reach the south dock leading to Mount Pyre. The waters were serene, reflecting the overcast skies. No rain was in the forecast, thankfully. The only eyesore was the rift at the peak of the mountain. Though they were not in motion, Josh remained seated on the electric dog's back. "Sure is peaceful this far north," he remarked.

Finding a land Pokémon large enough for him to ride would be interesting. With his height, it was sure to be a challenge. But a challenge he was willing to take. It also helped that he liked to try new things, even if it wasn't something that would essentially help with his line of work.

"Seems getting one would be ideal then. Though considering my height, it may be a bit of a challenge," he told him with an amused smile. Not for the first time, he was glad he had learned the art of faking emotions. Knowing emotions made someone seem more human, or so he had heard.

Returning to Apollo's back, he would fly at a lower altitude as they continued on. It wouldn't be long after continuing that they would reach the south dock leading to Mount Pyre.

Wanting to take in the scenery, he would halt Apollo and let his gaze sweep the area. Nothing especially stood out, not unless one counted the rift at the peak of the mountain. Something he had never had the privilege of seeing.

"So that's the rift? I've never been far enough up the mountain to see it before," he admitted.

Before discovering how much easier it was to find quite-large Pokémon in Hoenn than in other regions, Josh's height made him just as picky about what Pokémon to catch. The Gym Leader thought he was tall, but Ryker was a giant compared to him. "There are plenty of big Pokémon out there. Something like an Arcanine would be perfect for you. They're big, stout, and incredibly fast." Difficult to control due to not being able to turn quickly, but that was a detail Josh would keep to himself for now. He had to pull on Braver's reins pretty hard to get him to take turns at speed - hard enough that it left marks on his palms.

Crash bounded after Apollo, the Boltund keeping up within his limits as long as the Charizard did not fly too quickly. "Yep, that's the rift," Josh pointed. "Beyond is The Border, where restless souls wander. I've got a few friends and loved ones there that can't pass on to the afterlife. It can be dangerous there. If you have a Sygna Suit, it's highly recommend you wear it while inside."

He supposed Arcanine wouldn't be a bad choice. Arcanine was known for being incredibly loyal to their owners. And that was something he could definitely get behind. Loyalty was something he was actually very big on. And with it being a canine Pokémon, he could use it in his line of work.

"I may look into acquiring an Arcanine then," he stated, his thoughts momentarily straying to the benefits an Arcanine would have on his team.

In the wilderness where anything could happen, it was good not to dwell on one's thoughts for too long, so he decided to think more on it later, instead focusing on the layout in front of him.

As the younger male explained about the rift as well as what lay beyond it, he couldn't help but be curious. "Unfortunately, a Sygna suit isn't something I have," he told the dark-haired man, his eyes remaining fixed on the rift as questions ran through his mind. In the end, he decided to at least ask.

Not only were Arcanine loyal, but they were incredibly speedy, their Extreme Speed capable of what many legendary Pokémon renowned for speed could achieve. The Johto Beasts came to mind. On top of that, there were a select few Arcanine that could even Teleport. Braver was one of them. Perhaps one Ryker caught could learn to Teleport, too.

It did not come to Josh's surprise that Ryker didn't have a Sygna Suit. The materials to craft them were rare and prohibitively expensive, and some of them would not work unless they were procured alongside the Pokémon to be synced to the suit. It took more than just wealth to obtain one.

Josh frowned at Ryker's question about the Border. "There's... a lot. If a soul there has a really strong regret in life, that could prevent them from passing on. The one that comes to mind is Shawn. He was my head of security at Mauville Gym until dorian westcliff killed him and three of my staff last Spring." His head hung low thinking about how such a great man had his life unfairly taken from him. "It was all over the news."

Strong regret, huh? He still wasn't sure he understood. At the mention of Dorian, he kept his expression perfectly neutral. Not that it was overly hard. Being unable to really connect to his emotions, it made keeping a poker face super easy. Maybe a little too easy.

"That must have been horrible. What would cause such an attack?" he asked before realizing what he was asking. It was something his mentor had lectured him about. "Oh, that was rude of me, wasn't it? I shouldn't ask about painful memories," he said. Had he said that right?

"Unfortunately, I haven't been here that long. It must have happened before I arrived," he told the younger male. Either that or it had been right before he had joined Team Rocket, when he had been living away from civilization.

While waiting for Josh to say something, movement from his peripheral vision caught his attention. Turning his head, he saw a Pawniard that didn't seem too happy to see either of them. Perhaps they had crossed into her territory. Either way, he was going to catch her.

Taking out a Pokéball, he released Ares from its contents. The Gallade looked around before spotting the Pawniard, who immediately attacked with Feint Attack. Ares barely reacted before using Sacred Sword on the Pawniard.

Surprisingly, despite getting hit with an attack that had quadruple damage, the Pawniard was trying to get up to fight. Seeing the Pawniard on its last leg and realizing where this would go, he tossed an empty Pokéball at the Pawniard.[break] Josh Devlin
