Navy has never had the heart to tell kyle lopez, but he thinks these games are a waste of time. RPGs necessitate dozens, maybe hundreds, of hours. Video games are a fun way to kill an afternoon. Drinking soda pop at an arcade with the boys, going for the high score, that’s how you enjoy a video game. [break][break]
Slaving away all day? Grinding level by level? Watching a story that may be good or garbage? Fighting god at the end? There’s better things he could be doing with his life. [break][break]
Someone, somewhere out there, disagrees. Some helpful advice helped Terror Tot and him get their Pokémon. Now, armed with them and some weird cards, they have to brave a dungeon. [break][break]
“Ugh, this sucks.” He curses like a kid half his age. “But leaving’s a dumb idea. Who knows what we get for doing this?” Curiosity drives him. It is a powerful motivator. So, he stands on the edge of town, waves his scarlet hands, and says the only thing he knows how to say when other avatars pass him by. [break][break]

There's a hollowness to her eyes, far beyond her usual detached stare. She's unnaturally out of sorts. Nowhere is the calm, cool, and collected Tsubaki who never has a hair out of place. Instead there are bags under her eyes, she's drenched in sweat. Her clothes are ripped and torn.[break][break]

"Could recog... nise you from... a mile away..."[break][break]

She supports herself on her knees, relishing the chance to rest, if only for a while.[break][break]

“Licorice?” The discount detective questions. Whoever they are, they talk like they know him. Anyone with a finger to the pulse of Hoenn, or access to pokepedia, knows who ‘Navy’ is. He’s the only person in Hoenn that uses a color name – one he loudly, proudly boasts. His enemies and friends both know him by that name.[break][break]
It’s the epithet that clues him into her identity. That and her snake-like avatar. There’s precious few people who would choose to look like that. Wukong cheers, a verbal signifier of the revelation.[break][break]
“Baki?” He asks, like that wasn’t obvious. “You really giving Freya that hard of a time over in Ever Grande?” The question is framed with a laugh, punctuated by a serious gaze towards the horizon. “Sure. Yeah. We can team up. Prolly best it’s just the two of us for now. I’ll show Lopez what’s up. Hard mode, here we go.”[break][break]
He says all this like he is not notoriously bad at video games.

She briefly wonders what freya morningstar might think, seeing that. She thought it was funny in the moment, but the man taking it so literally makes her briefly question her conduct. Arceus, she hopes she can give all those Salamence a run for their money. If she's not, is she even trying?[break][break]

"Speaking of, you do too. So I guess you've got two things in common."[break][break]

She walks ahead of the man, sending him an invite to her party. Two's a crowd in her books, but that Hydreigon that spawn camped her has her considering the difficulty of this game. She's bad at games, and she hates things she's bad at, but... if Navy's here, and he's so confident, then she can just ride his coattails. [break][break]

This'll be easy![break][break]

Navy takes a small solace in this: should there come a day where she has to fight MATIAS SILPH, Freya will be well-prepared to fight Groudon.[break][break]
After all, the surest way to slay a monster is to turn his own strength against him. That is a tale for another time, another day. Today, they have a dungeon to traverse. It’ll be a lighthearted adventure. With two Pokemon at their side, they’ll be fine. Navy might not know games, but he knows Pokemon battling.[break][break]
“Alright, looks like we’re here. Got your, uh, potions? Food? All that crap they throw at you in these RPGs?” Sighing, he takes the first step down into the dungeon below. “Arceus, where’s a shooter when you need one? Now there’s a fun game.”[break][break]
They’re immediately ambushed by something kyle lopez would call a casual filter. The door shuts behind them. A demonic face appears out of the wall. Shuddering, it starts to advance towards them. At the far end of the hallway is a locked door. Logic dictates it will only open when Tsubaki and Navy slay the Demon Wall.[break][break]
Who cares about logic?! Navy points a hand. Wukong picks up what he’s putting down. He charges the wall. A fire punch results…[break][break]
…in a hit that’s not very effective![break][break]
“Crap! Baki!”

Baki's never bothered playing an RPG. Closest she's gotten is running up the score on Pokemon Sleep, but gaining levels in this game can't be all that different, can it? With his prompt, Baki checks her inventory for the first time. There's one ball inside, containing Amaryllis, and three Battle Cards. They spill onto the ground, and she kneels down to gather them off the ground.[break][break]

Baki quickly leafs through them as Navy pushes on ahead. They all seem pretty unremarkable, almost insultingly boring. Guess that's the trade-off for plugging in such a boring job. [break][break]

By the time she finishes, she's gotta run to catch up with Navy, who's already got one foot inside the dungeon. [break][break]

As they enter, an ambush awaits. Navy wastes no time at all attacking, but it looks like Wukong's not getting through. Baki hesitates for a second, staring at the monster. It fills her with dread just looking at it. In the real world, nothing can shake her. She's dodged bullets, she's dodged pokemon, she's faced down monsters in the interdream-mist. She's even faced down an attack aimed at her by one FERNANDO SILPH .[break][break]

But fighting in a video game? What's she supposed to do?[break][break]

She mashes buttons for a second in a panic. By sheer chance, by complete happenstance, she happens to open the menu and select one of her cards with her clumsy fingers. Her avatar holds the Basement Key card above her head, and the door on the other side of the room is unlocked.[break][break]

"W-wait, what did I do? Did I win...? [break][break]

"H-Haha! Got it! That's how you do it, right, Navy?"[break][break]

Baki's avatar rushes towards the door, leaving Wukong and Navy behind as she gets the hell out of there as fast as she can. It's hard to tell if the Tsubaki on the other side of the screen even notices that the enemy they were meant to fight is still alive.[break][break]

“Swear to Arceus, Lopez and you are the world’s biggest pu- wussies.” Course correcting at the last minute, he grumbles. Wukong is no dragon, but his fiery heart is in the right place. Navy’s Infernape smashes against the door, to no avail. They’re forced back, inch by inch. The battle card hangs above his hand, waiting to be used. Unfortunately for Navy, he didn’t read the instructions.[break][break]
Tsubaki saves him now, as she did before. When the Demon Door reaches the far edge of the room, he would have been crushed. Navy and Wukong are sent flying into the next room. Both land on cracked rear ends, their falls cushioned by soft grass beneath their feet. The grass is lit on fire by their tails, making both man and monkey jump up. They’re birds of a feather, monkey brains and all.[break][break]
“Can’t you just enjoy a brawl every once in a while? Arceus, this is the fun part about being involved with all the bigwigs. You get to have fun in consequence free games.” Pause. Beat. Dawning realization. Rubbing his face with a scarlet claw, he grumbles.[break][break]
“I hate it when he rubs off on me. Come on, let’s go. Probably got a ways to go yet.” Turning to face down the hall, he advances ahead of the spreading grass fire.

The girl teases him, likely fully unaware that she's bypassing the point of the game. This is the game in her eyes, nothing to compare it to. She's functionally illiterate when it comes to games and it shows. But she seems so smug for it.[break][break]

"Yep! We're not done yet! Follow me!"[break][break]

The girl in the Seviper costume leads confidently down the corridor to the next room. What they'd find there is a series of blades swinging back and forth, a bridge that falls away one tile after the other before rebuilding itself, and a large stretch of very obviously differently colored tiles.[break][break]

Tsubaki walks forward, holding up on the directional pad until she bumps into the wall. Miraculously, she dodges every single trap blindly. Beginner's luck.[break][break]

"Alright, now what? I'm stuck!"[break][break]

She continues walking into the wall as she shouts back at Navy in the doorway.[break][break]

“Okay. One sec.” At last, he realizes he can crush the cards. Doing so, he feels himself empowered. His choice in the previous round grants him a path forward.[break][break]

The nose knows. It might not be the most obvious way forward, but he follows the scent of flowers. Tsubaki’s dumb luck proves his salvation. With a huff, they move to the next room to see a pair of men just standing there. Of course. Enemies! She's starting to get the hang of this![break][break]

The shadow pokemon emerges from her pokeball with a hiss that rattles the barred windows. Full of anger and rage, she doesn't hesitate in the slightest, attacking the man on the left. Whatever words he spoke were of no consequence, unable to deter the girl's sudden violent streak.[break][break]

Monkey see, monkey do. Navy’s right behind her. He engages in terrible, mortal close combat with the man on the right. Neither guardian seems to have expected this would occur. A poison tail pierces one, a fist knocks the other out cold. They’re left standing there.[break][break]
Alone save for one another.[break][break]
Two doors. Two paths. One the way forward, one a dead end. No way to know now. No way to even know what their challenge was. All Navy can do is shrug. Grab one of the door handles, turn the knob.[break][break]
“That was eas---” Like a monkey grabbing an electric line, he’s shocked. Fried. Buzzed. Tsubaki, too. They get caught in a strange case of skill synergy as both skills simultaneously kick in, rewinding them back to thirty seconds prior.[break][break]
Two men stand before them. One only tells truth, the other only lies. They wait silently for a question. In front of Navy, a toolbar opens up.[break][break]

Protip: This dungeon’s only got, like, four floors. One more after these guys and you’re at the final boss. Pretty shitty dungeon, huh?

There's a few moments where the Seviper-clad avatar spins in frantic circles as Tsubaki on the other end mashed buttons all frustrated. Then she stops and stares at Navy.[break][break]

"Alright, watch this!"[break][break]

Baki's avatar reaches for her pokemon again, and lets out her Seviper. The shadow pokemon hisses, staring down the two men with evil eyes. Both are frozen in place. [break][break]

But, owing to their lack of a walk cycle, or any programmed pathing, they just keep... standing there.[break][break]

"... Huh? This is so weird. Game's busted."[break][break]

“Let’s chalk it up to our lack of imagination.” For a man born in a city, he’s picking up a country bumpkin’s dry wit. Moving past the two silent, still sentinels, he moves through the correct door. Instantly, they’re warped into another fight. Trash mobs right before the final boss? Now that’s something you see in a dungeon.[break][break]
“Alright, Baki. This is how we’ve gotta do this. We gotta think this through. Check their stats. Much as I hate it, we should---” And, of course, Wukong is having none of it. The part of him that is, for this dream, a funky monkey, demands he charge. He hits the mobs with another close combat. Powerful though the move might be, it isn’t enough – especially with his defense lowering.[break][break]
“Baki, Baki! What the hell’s your ability? You can rewind time?! We both gotta time our death—” One of the mobs, a little slime, slams into Navy. Having used Close Combat twice, it’s enough to almost knock him out full stop.

Baki looks to the rest of the slimes, then at Navy.[break][break]

"Well. Something like that, I think that red bar has gotta empty first."[break][break]

She pokes her sword over her head, tapping the floating thing that says HP.[break][break]

Whatever that means.[break][break]
