“Yes. That is correct.” Again, he stands. What he says next, he can’t look Josh in the eyes while he for. They’re the words of a man no longer young, pacing a battlement, watching for trouble. His cheeks like sunken as the sun catches them, casting a long shadow. Eyes hollow.[break][break]
“There are two kinds of men in this world, Josh. There are men who destroy, and there are men who create. Destroyers, warriors, they see the the world for what it is. Society is a lie we tell ourselves. Mankind is much, much better at fighting than enjoying peace. The strong assert themselves over the weak. That is the truth of this world. One day, someone came along who saw the writing on the wall and decided to make a better world. Rocket can dress this war up however they want, it is still a war to reassert that old world order. By proving their strength, they want to show the world that truth. Rule simply because they are strong, justify it with laws.”[break][break]
A pause. His words are spoken in a cadence that is not Navy’s. His gray eyes are pale, pale like the eyes of a man who crossed Galar to keep a dream of bonded civilization together. That man did not want to see a fragile peace fall to human’s baser nature. He mantled the hopes of a high king, helping the monarchs of that distant land as best he could.[break][break]
“There is no shame in what you are, Josh. You are a creator. A man of peace. I doubt I will live to see the tomorrow that exists beyond this war. You value civilization and its rules. There are some who would say that makes you weak. Many of them are Rocket. But…” He turns to Josh and he smiles. It is a sad smile. Today, he has really, truly bared his soul to Josh. He prays to Arceus and every other god that he listens.[break][break]
“…that weakness is so damn beautiful. Fight for a world where people can watch you win the Master cup for yourself if you gotta fight. Fight for a world that isn’t just for the strong.”

The words that came out of Navy's mouth were ones of a veteran hardened by an endless war. One who, for decades, knew nothing but fighting. Josh closed his eyes and put mental images to the Gym Leader's story. Navy's kind were people who defended the people too weak to protect themselves from the cruelty of the world around them: a world so brutal that only the strong survived. Natural selection in its form most pure.

Josh wanted to be a hero. There were many kinds of heroes. A hero could be as grand as a war veteran who lived to taste the blood of hundreds, if not thousands, of enemy soldiers. A general to usurp the throne of an unjust monarch. A hero could be the man who chases down a bank robber and recovers the contents of the bank's vault. A hero could be someone as simple as the person who recovers a child's ball that had been lost down a hill.

Navy's wisdom reverberated like a series of resonating tuning forks, echoing and bouncing off the walls of the otherwise silent room. "Navy... the reason I went to Dewford and fought... is for a world like that. Not a world where people live in fear of what city Rocket is going to strike next. I want to see a world where people concerns are whether they can land a promotion at their job. Who wins the Ultra Bowl. Where they're going out for dinner. Where their next vacation will be. Not whether they'll live to see the next day."

It was a world where contests of violence between Pokémon were as regulated as the Gym Challenge was. "A world where the purpose of the Gym Challenge is to become eligible for a tournament, not to train children in the art of war."

His eyes find the door. All things end, some too soon. There are duties that require attending. Calls to make, reports to write, a rift to Ultra Space that needs securing. All in a day’s work.[break][break]
“Take care of yourself. You’ll figure things out. Don’t you dare go changing that gym challenge of yours up.” He’s talking like what he appears to be again, a man in his thirties. Donning his hat, he heads for the door.[break][break]
“World needs a bit of levity. I’ve got your back.” And with that, he departs. Josh is left to his meal and one hell of a race.

Josh cracked a smile for the first time since Navy had come into the room. He was right. While the mounted specialist was a good fighter, good was not going to cut it. Dewford's Gym Leader was a true warrior. He had to find his own role in Hoenn's military, and the information war would be a good place to start. Perhaps it would be something to talk to Melody Miro and Greyson Connors about before the next big League operation. The next strike back they had planned. "It's not a decision I can make overnight, but you helped me understand my place a lot."

Josh's Gym Challenge wasn't being changed up; if anything, it was being added to. It would take some brainstorming and approval from the League, of course, but a war courier scenario sounds like a more productive, if daunting, way to prepare Hoenn's trainers to help with the war in a way that didn't even cross his mind.

"One more thing, Navy. When I'm at full strength again and after I kick Matias' ass. I want to meet you in a remote place. A place no one will see us. To fight me. To help prepare for the title match." With that, he let the battle-hardened Gym Leader go, turning the race back on and digging into his pasta.

The first bite was heavenly.
