With Josh so close to the title of Champion, a battle tournament would be a great way to get the Master of Faster prepared for his title match with KYLE LOPEZ. His regulars would be watching from the lounge on the second floor of Mauville Gym, following the action and watching feature matches their Leader was involved in.

The sheer efficiency that the tournament's healing machines operated at was a marvel of the event: they worked faster than ones at most Pokémon Centers, making sure the Pokémon were all in top shape for each round. This was going to be a long day: battle after battle. With them being only one Pokémon per side, at the very least they would be quick. As Josh was sipping on a bottle of water, an announcement blared over the venue's loudspeakers:

"Attention all Vital City Tournament participants. Pairings are up for round four. Pairings are up for round four."

Pulling up the list on his phone, he scrolled down to his name and found his opponent and his assigned arena number. That opponent was Yuina Higashi .

Josh took his place on his assigned side of the battleground. Next to him was Raikiri, the Zeraora he was known for. It seemed he wasn't fooling around; he was in it to win the whole tournament. "Yuina! Didn't think I'd see you here," the Gym Leader waved. "Good luck keeping up! You'll need it!"

This was certainly exciting, it was the buzz of half the region ever since it started getting closer, and had swept through the majority of the cities as more and more people got involved.[break]
There was a tournament beginning, and while Yuina hadn't done much in the way of battling professionally or for merit, she figured that it was a good opportunity to keep practicing. She'd been working really hard with Navy to hone her battling skills and understand what it was to be in the heat of the battle. And another opportunity to have the sport of it without having to worry about the consequences... The life and death situation of being on that island...[break][break]
Yuina was definitely on board.[break]
She was all geared up, and it was time to begin the rounds, her first ticket being called. Stepping out onto the field, her first match getting ready, Yuina looked across the way find...[break][break]
"Josh," Yuina smiled, she almost couldn't believe it, not that he was here, but that he was one of her battle matches. It was sure to prove a good time. She and Daikenki had been working hard together, the Samurott definitely had a couple more things in battle going for him now, and Yuina was excited to share that with her good friend as she released the water type out onto the field.[break][break]

Josh smirked when he saw the matchup. At last, a break; Daikenki was a water-type he was familiar with from raising Toshiro. "I'm ready, too. Just because we're friends doesn't mean I'm not giving it my all." The smirk would not leave his face; was the confidence warranted? Only time would tell as Raikiri flexed in anticipation of the horn.

The Zeraora did not waste a split second, lunging toward Dakienki in a QUICK ATTACK that was so fast, the untrained eye could have mistaken it for teleporting. That was not the true attack, though; digging his claws into the ground, Raikiri slammed on the brakes right in front of the water-type, rearing and attempting to sock the Hisuian Pokémon with a flurry of PLASMA PAWS.

The nature of a friendly battle was prominent as Josh took his side of the field, and Yuina smiled back. She couldn't expect anything less, that just because they were friends that she expected him to pull punches. He was a gym leader after all, he should give it everything he had.[break][break]
"We will too, we'll give you a good match," Yuina returned, and the battle began. Having already seen Josh's intended Pokemon, Yuina was thankful that Daikenki had developed the defensive position he did. As soon as the battle began, and the Zeraora rushed at blinding speeds, Yuina tapped the orb at her belt for Daikenki. The Samurott took on glittering yellow energy, enveloped by Electric Tera, and just when the feline would have made contact, the Samurott sank into the ground, disappearing into a Shadow Sneak.[break][break]
Then from the depths of the darkness Daikenki emerged, lunging forward with a Ceaseless Edge to land his strike.

Daikenki's SHADOW SNEAK was perfectly timed; the Samurott vanished into the ethereal plane, causing Raikiri's flurry to catch air. His lightning reflexes let him turn around almost instantly, only to see the dark-type fade back into the material world with a CEASELESS EDGE too wide for even one of the fastest Pokémon in the world to dodge.

The topaz-colored Terastal Body Yuina's Pokémon sported rendered the Zeraora's ranged attack useless. As much as Josh didn't want to, he had little choice but to order Raikiri to remain in melee range. If the Samurott wanted to play a game of speed, Josh was more than willing to entertain that game, his swiftest Pokémon lunging at Daikenki in a low QUICK ATTACK intended to trip him.

As his blades struck true, emerging from the shadows, it was a battle of pure brawn now as the Pokemon clashed. Daikenki recoiled from his blow, watching the feline carefully, and soon it rushed in again closing the gap. Fist for fist and blade for claw, the two were in full melee range now, and as the Zeraora moved to swipe Daikenki's legs from beneath him, the Samurott lunged to meet the blow with his blades once more, matching the ferocity with a Sacred Sword.

While the Samurott's SACRED SWORD was powerful, it was unwieldy; by the time Daikenki could draw a seamitar and slash with it, Raikiri was already gone thanks to a dizzying burst of AGILITY. He and Josh were in their element. All the Gym Leader had to do to press the advantage was keep the Zeraora moving too fast for his opponent to comprehend.

With the Terastal body protecting Daikenki, the Zeraora's most potent weapon, his Electro Ball, had been stripped from him. In its place was a different type of heat. The striped Pokémon swerved back toward, flooding his paws with electricity so intense that they ignited. Josh's Pokémon pounced with a FIRE PUNCH fueled by the electrical fire, continuing the hit-and-run tactics that seemed so effective against the melee specialist.

Locked in a battle of melee combat, Daikenki moved as swiftly as he could to keep up pace with the Zeraora as they clashed over the battle field. The Samurott worked hard to match claw with blade every time the electric type came in swiftly with its speed, and given the opportunity he thrust his blades into a Swords Dance to try and gain an upper hand.[break]
As the feline rushed in, paws coated in seething fire, Daikenki raised the blades again and slashed with a Razor Shell to combat the flames, swiping furiously and moving back with his footwork to stave off getting burned by the Fire Punch.

The water-type ducked and slid perfectly to let the pouncing Zerora slice his sensitive belly on his foe's RAZOR SHELL. The great cat left a red trail behind him, breathing heavily. Backed into a corner, he and Josh both knew what they had to do.

Raising his Z-GLOVE skyward, Raikiri's QUICKINIUM-Z glowed a brilliant yellow as he moved to a corner of the battle court. He lunged at Daikenki in a HYPERSONIC PLASMA CHARGE that was too fast to follow. Even if the lightning he was wreathed in didn't fry the Samurott, the sonic explosion the sprint created threatened to ravage the foe's ears!

The battle was coming down to the wire, the vital equipment used to gauge the metrics of the battles were showing each strike in earnest, and things were counting down quick for both the Zeraora and Daikenki as the two brawlers continued their match. The Samurott's Razor Shell did its work in stopping the fire punches from scorching him, but there was little that either Yuina or Daikenki could do to avoid the furious onslaught that followed...[break]
The z move was devastating, and in an attempt to stave off even the smallest bit of damage Daikenki leaped into the shadows again for Shadow Sneak as the attack shook the entire field. The Samurott rushed out of the shadows to strike with the ghostly energy of Shadow Sneak, hoping to get back into range, but nothing was visible, the dust needed to settle...

Josh was in disbelief. How was Yuina's Samurott standing after such a vicious and fast attack? Claw, lightning, and sonic shockwave had failed to defeat the water-type before him, both still standing after the brutal exchange between the two.

Raikiri was exhausted from the exertion, only able to utilize his AGILITY to zip away from the water-type while he recovered. This was one tough Pokémon if he could remain on his feet after an attack like that!

Daikenki's Electric Tera was proving effective, the Samurott wouldn't have been able to stand the blow otherwise, though as the dust cleared and the light faded, it was plain to see that neither Pokemon had the gusto that they did at the beginning. The match was intense and powerful, and Daikenki stood there with panting maw. He'd survived the blow, but only barely.[break][break]
Things were coming down to the wire, the vital equipment was showing the lowering number of points for both Pokemon, and it wouldn't be too much longer before the match could be called. In an attempt to take the opportunity of the aftermath of the devastating z move, Daikenki rushed forward with his blades, looking to make a strike with Ceaseless Edge.

Raikiri and Daikenki danced around one another, both of them on their last legs. It was only the electric feline's great speed that let him play keep away from the water-type. Time expired without a knockout on either side, leaving the match to a judge decision. With a green flag waved in the Gym Leader's direction, he was the winner.

"Wow, what a close one," Josh exhaled. He was on a four-match win streak to start the tournament, putting him in the top six percent of competitors. It was to be expected for a Gym Leader. "You also took one off me. Almost. You've earned your title as an Elite, Yuina. You're one bright cookie. Who knows? Maybe we'll see each other later on in the tournament."
