With Josh so close to the title of Champion, a battle tournament would be a great way to get the Master of Faster prepared for his title match with KYLE LOPEZ. His regulars would be watching from the lounge on the second floor of Mauville Gym, following the action and watching feature matches their Leader was involved in.

The sheer efficiency that the tournament's healing machines operated at was a marvel of the event: they worked faster than ones at most Pokémon Centers, making sure the Pokémon were all in top shape for each round. This was going to be a long day: battle after battle. With them being only one Pokémon per side, at the very least they would be quick. As Josh was sipping on a bottle of water, an announcement blared over the venue's loudspeakers:

"Attention all Vital City Tournament participants. Pairings are up for round nine. Pairings are up for round nine."

Pulling up the list on his phone, he scrolled down to his name and found his opponent and his assigned arena number. That opponent was Tempest Quinn .

Josh took his place on his assigned side of the battleground. Next to him was Raikiri, the Zeraora he was known for. It seemed he wasn't fooling around; he was in it to win the whole tournament. "Hi, Tempest!" Josh greeted, oblivious to the fact that they had squared off at Dewford. "Congratulations on your deep run. How have you and Marina been?"

There was a mild tension when Josh Devlin was announced as his next match, but- [break][break]

It seemed that he didn't recognize Tempest. The wet suit he had had on must have hidden most of his features, which Temp was grateful for.[break][break]

"She's good! Couldn't use her since she's nursing a litter right now, but I got a good companion." The Eevee chattered from Tempest's side, shaking his tail before hopping up onto his Trainer's shoulder. Tempest chuckled and reached up to give the fox a ruffle of the fur.[break][break]

"You been alright? Seems like Hoenn's been crazy lately." But, the chatter would eventually have to end. The refs at the side were giving them Looks, probably urging them to hurry up. Tempest pouted when he made eye contact with one, then glanced back at Josh with an apologetic look.[break][break]

"Guess we should start." They probably needed this arena for other challengers.

"That's wonderful!" Josh chirped back. "You'll have a nice family! I raise an entire pride of Pyroar myself. Maybe I can show them to you one of these days!" How many did he have now, ten? He couldn't wait to helm a Ranger operation big enough where all of them could see action at the same time. For Hoenn's sake, he hoped there wouldn't be a disaster large-scale enough to require them all, but it was great to see his project blossom into what it was.

"I'm just glad to be out of the hospital," the Gym Leader huffed, his demeanor substantially changed after bringing up his extended stay in Dewford. "You should see the number of Bullet Seeds they had to cut out of me. I've got scars all over my midsection now. They filled a small cup with them. I still have it in my apartment."

Enough chatter; with the starting horn sounding and the clock winding, the duo had a battle to fight. Raikiri didn't have the greatest defenses; his speed and slipperiness would have to stand in for them. The mythical thundercat would show little mercy for the Eevee, ramming and trampling toward the small Pokémon with his four PLASMA PAWS. If even one were to connect, it could shock the normal-type with crippling voltage.

Tempest opens his mouth to continue the conversation, maybe comment his sympathies, but the horns sound and judges give them a look. Temp waves it off and gives Josh Devlin one last friendly pat on the shoulder before he makes his way over to his battle station.[break][break]

The Zeraora doesn't hold back, his high speed kicking up to pull in close to Hati. While Hati was agile, she wasn't as fast. She chattered and yelped when the move slapped at her, leaving electric shocks in her fur. But she didn't hold back, trying to use the proximity to her advantage.[break][break]

Swinging her tail around, fluffed up and glowing with draconic energy, she tried to slam Rakiri with a Dragon Hammer.[break][break]

While powerful, the DRAGON HAMMER was unwieldy and telegraphed. It was easy for Raikiri to BOUNCE over, though it did commit the electric feline to a trajectory. He fired ELECTRO BALLS out of his paws, the attack not just dangerous on their own. In addition to being potent due to the species' ludicrous speed, their force could also alter his trajectory enough to stay on target for his pouncing attack.

There was something unusual and tough about the Eevee. Though he couldn't quite put his finger on it, Josh knew this foe was a force to be reckoned with. Given the skill levels of his opponents this late in the tournament, he might have to study Temp's battle style with Hati. They could very well meet in top cut, particularly with how large the top cut was projected to be.

With her Disguise previously shattered, Hati could do little but frantically try and dodge around the Electro Balls. The arc of electricity from them would still crackle out and scorch her, which was painful. Yet, it was better than being actually hit; Tempest knew that one well placed direct hit would be enough to knock Hati would.[break][break]

Hati, for her part, was becoming frustrated. She wasn't used to being put on the defensive like this, usually more direct in her approach.[break][break]

It was slight, but she spotted a small opening.[break][break]

Tempest gave a quick whistle in approval and she darted for it.[break][break]

Body shifting into a double image, the Veeevee Volley was a confusing attack meant to disarm and bewilder. She tried to tackle into the Zeraora while she had her chance.[break][break]

The VEEVEE VOLLEY flew toward Raikiri with such speed and such breadth that not even the mythical thundercat could dodge it all. Whether it was by supernatural reaction time or merely luck, the critical head strike to follow left the Zeraora dizzy.

Now it was the Eevee that had the speed advantage. At least temporarily while Raikiri was delirious. It was a small miracle he didn't suffer a concussion from the impact. Still trying to recover his bearings, he haphazardly swiped his PLASMA PAWS in the normal-type's general direction, Josh not expecting him to accomplish much. What could he do, though? That was a nasty hit. He needed time. Time he might not have.

Hati was the type to take advantage of any slight weakness, any slight advantage. Her litter had not been Shadow like her parents were; they had been something strange and all their own. But they had still been raised by Shadow pokemon, the parental bond so natural it couldn't be broken by shattered emotions.[break][break]

So when Raikiri was, for the moment, incapacitated she would strike.[break][break]

The Plasma Paws dug at her thick coat and made her muscles twitch as she drew closer. Flames built up in her throat, which she intended to vomit all over the Zeraora at close range- her Burning Jealousy.

Seeing Raikiri's condition deteriorate as the Eevee barfed BURNING JEALOUSY all over, Josh knew he had to make his stand here. He raised his Z-GLOVE above his head, the Zeraora's QUICKININUM-Z gleaming a brilliant yellow. With a chest charred black with burns, the thundercat thrust himself onto his feet and back to a corner of the court.

All four of his paws emitted sprays of sparks, the Zeraora wreathed in lightning bolts. It looked like Josh's Pokémon had performed a teleport from how fast his HYPERSONIC PLASMA CHARGE was. If the force behind his ramming attack didn't down the Eevee, then perhaps the sonic explosion would!

Josh Devlin raises up his hand, signaling a charge of electric current in the air. Tempest clicks his tongue; he'd hoped to use this later, but.... Hati was looking a little rough around the edges. Whatever blast was about to come would take her out if Temp didn't do something.[break][break]

"Hati!" Temp called out. He raised his own hand; the tangle of bracelets on his arm glimmered. A Z-Crystal of his own, forced to be the charm with a worn down band, glimmered with it's own light.[break][break]

Z-Crystal power flowed through Hati. The air chilled as much as it sparked for a moment, crackling with frigid breath. Hati picked up the pace to meet the Zeraora right in the middle with her own Subzero Slammer.

The two Z-Moves clashed in a violent explosion that knocked Josh out of his Trainer's Box and off his feet, demonstrating why many Gyms and high-profile battlegrounds had raised platforms for trainers to stand on. It was impossible for the Gym Leader to see what was going on in the most critical moments of the match. Raikiri would be on his own.

Even the Zeraora was unsure where Hati was in the collision of ice and lightning. With how much pressure he had to put on his paws and claws in slowing down from his supersonic pace, all four of them had ignited. Adding even more fog to the already low-visibility conditions, the Zeraora bounded toward an Eevee-sized shadow, The trampling FIRE PUNCHES would finish the job. It was just a matter of finding the purified Normal-type.

"Ack!" Much like Josh Devlin, Tempest had to duck for cover from the cloud of energy and frost that threatened to bluster them over. When it was safe enough to stand back up, the whole area was filled with an ominous fog.[break][break]

Temp clicked on his Vital Gear, confirming what he already knew- this one would be for all the beans. Both pokemon were low, with just one more strike being the deciding factor....[break][break]

But with such low visibility, it would be all up to Hati.[break][break]

Hati, meanwhile, tried to sniff through the ozone from the clashing of attacks. Her eyes flicked forward right as the Zeraora started to prep his attack. She tried to sink into the shadow for a Shadow Sneak. But who would hit first?

All Josh had to rely on, with how thick the fog was, was his own VITAL GEAR. He got his answer, and one he wasn't happy to see: Hati had come out on top. The Gym Leader didn't know how, but he knew what had happened. The first thing he saw when the smoke cleared was a judge holding a red flag in his direction. That was two losses in a row now. If he didn't get in gear, he was going to have a really tough time when tomorrow rolled around.

"Wow, such a close match, Temp," Josh exhaled, withdrawing his fallen Zeraora. "So far my only other loss is to Cian, who's in first place right now. Keep winning for me so you can help my breakers, kay? I'd love to see Marina again sometime soon. It's hard to find people that appreciate the thrill of bouncing across the waves."
