January in Hoenn isn’t supposed to be cold. In the time before the war, it was chilly, especially so close to the sea, but the area’s tropic climate kept people in shorts. Since the advent of the war, Navy has seen snow on beaches. It feels like a proper winter wonderland. Kyurem’s recent rampage and Hoopa’s many prophecies have given the region a firm reminder of winter’s wrath.[break][break]

At least alcohol keeps the bones warm. As a rule, law enforcement officers do not usually meet up during work hours at honky tonks for drinks, much less when it’s the first meeting between a sheriff and his deputy. Montgomery has a past which smells like danger. Navy doesn’t know what secrets are hiding in the man’s closet, but they’re there.[break][break]
He doesn’t mind. As a man with a few secrets and murders he’d prefer the government never find out about, he’s learned not to pry too deeply into a man’s past. Maybe that’s why Montgomery stood out to him. With his tenure as Dewford’s gym leader drawing to a close, it’ll help him sleep easy, knowing Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki will have someone helping her who knows the score.[break][break]
Inevitably, the new deputy arrives. He will find Navy drinking mead, a proper warrior’s drink. It is sweet, but it still burns like a galloping Rapidash. With a wave, Navy invites the older man over.[break][break]
“Yo. Glad you could make it, man. Been a while since Dewford’s got a new deputy.” A small pause, punctuated by another drink. “You picked a hell of a region to move to. Take it you’re not a fan of the quiet life?”

[attr="class","monty"]In typical fashion, Montgomery threw his hat on his head, his hair trailing down his leather jacket as he meandered his way through Dewford Town. He's late: he always is. Somehow, he still has a job, though. However, he wondered what exactly got into Navy's head.

Why him? There were surely other folks in Hoenn, officers who'd been around longer than he had. Not to mention, Montgomery had quite the filthy past — of course, the sheriff wouldn't know that.

He entered the bar, waving off the keep as he mentioned he was meeting someone who was already here. His boots announced his presence before his mouth, offering a hand to Navy.

"Nice ta see ya too, Sheriff," Montgomery offered in greeting, sitting down when the seat's offered. He ordered himself a drink too, shrugging off his leather jacket.

"I guess you could say that. I have a knack for findin' myself in situations all the time. And Hoenn's one hell of a situation. It could use more help than Unova, that's fer sure." He grabbed his glass, which had been set in front of him, taking a swig.

"Sir, can I ask ya, why ya want me as yer deputy?"

“’Cause I read enough about you to know that you’re strong, and you strike me as a guy who hates cops.” It’s an answer as simple and straightforward as it is paradoxical. Navy’s smile is knowing. He sees something of himself in the man that now drinks with him. Taking out a cigar, he lights it up and smokes. Another is offered to the deputy. Whether it is taken or not, Navy turns his attention up to the screen.[break][break]
“There’s crazy shit going on here, man. In this region. In this town. These people…they need us.” The bar is sparsely populated at this hour, in this month. Many of the younger folk, those their sheriff has affectionately dubbed his Dewford hipsters, are gone to university off in big cities. It’s just the old and those who have lived her all their lives left.[break][break]
“League’s busy. They’ve got all kindsa shit they gotta deal with. It’s on us to make sure these people can sleep at night. Most people burn out in a month or two precisely cause this place is such a…situation.”

[attr="class","monty"]Montgomery couldn't tell if Navy was ballsy... or a psychopath. Right now, he was leaning toward the former, hoping that he was right to trust his sheriff's judgement. However, there were alarm bells ringing in his head, causing him to wonder if his cover hadn't been good.

Or, maybe it had been too good.

"How do you reckon that, Navy?" he asked, giving him a sidelong glance as he sipped from his glass again. "I don't think I've given any reason for ya to think I'm a cop hater."

Murphy should've been erased. He knew that ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ was. He wondered if Sheriff Navy had connections to Rocket intel.

"I understand. But how are your townspeople gonna react when ya announce a rookie is takin' a deputy spot? Are ya gonna tell them what ya told me? 'I think he hates cops, but he's strong!'"

He couldn't help but bark a laugh, taking the offered cigar and inhaling a puff of smoke. It left his mouth and his nostrils as he handed it back, leaning in closer and dropping his voice to a low murmur for only Navy to hear.

"And what if I hurt your little town, Sheriff? What will ya do then?"

“Then, my friend,” his eyes grow deadly serious. Steel eclipses a softer gray, bringing the eyes into focus. Rust circles around the edges, sharp red veins pulling into focus an overworked soul pressing on despite everything. “I’ll show you strength.”[break][break]
In another lifetime, he hadn’t been a good person. Had it not been for love, a boy’s love and a woman’s, he would have allowed that strength to define him. When the occasion calls for it, he can still dip into that well. Navy holds that serious, grim expression. He holds it for a moment, looking at Montgomery with biblical severity.[break][break]
And then, without warning, he smiles again. Following the smile, he laughs. It is a big, bellowing laughter. Laughter like that, once upon a time, was cried by warriors on the night before a fight, or at a feast following one. Warriors laugh like that as they boast of their fresh kills or the glory they will win on the morrow. It is a laugh meant to be washed down by mead and that much he can do.[break][break]
“Got yourself a black hat. Tellin’ on yourself a little. I’ve seen plenty of those Unovan cowboy flicks. You don’t dress like us without watchin’ some. Fancy yourself a bad boy, if not a cop hater, but I think I read people pretty good. I’ll tell everyone ‘this guy’s got style, and he’s ready to fight any Rocket or jellyfish that decides to show up in our little town’.” Only after he processes his own words does he understand their absurdity.[break][break]
“…you watch any of the news coming out of Hoenn ‘bout the Three Days War, back when it was happening? Remember anything ‘bout a Pokemon called Nihilego?”

[attr="class","monty"]Montgomery met Navy's gaze with one of his own, refusing to back down from this sudden stare down. If he knew any better, like in any of the classic wild west movies, they'd have to have a show down outside. Guns pulled. Aimed. Fire.

However, Navy broke first, bursting into a fit of laughter and smiles. He furrowed his brow, regarding him with a look of confusion. No, this guy wasn't crazy.

He was definitely a psychopath.

"I wonder if ya got some screw loose in there somewhere," Montgomery muttered to himself, sipping on his stiff drink. Though he thought about it for a moment before heaving a heavy sigh, as if he was putting a heavy burden on his shoulders. "I suppose I'll help ya out in yer precious Dewford."

"Jellyfish." That word stuck out. He flicked his eyes back toward the sheriff. "Jellyfish?" Montgomery echoed.

Ah. So that's what this was about. NIHILGEO.

"Sounds familiar. But give me the information anyway, so I'm caught up."

“Find me a guy in this region who doesn’t have a screw loose and I’ll get him a golden globe.” For, Navy’s unspoken implication goes, they are simply a better actor than most. To gaze into the abyss of action in a place beset on all sides by trouble is to have it reciprocate the gesture.[break][break]
But they’re not there to discuss philosophy, or acting, or anything like that. They’re two men with a job to do. They can drink, they can joke, but it must be followed by action. Montgomery must be made ready for what comes next.[break][break]
Fortunately for them both, Navy is not the knucklehead some would say he is. He’s come prepared. From beneath his poncho comes a file. Inside are details concerning Nihilego – snippets of his own file. It’s practical information. Weak points are discussed, as well as the oxymoron that is their skin. Glass should not be as hard as stone.[break][break]
“Hard to kill. Touch any of their feels and they sting you with a neurotoxin. Either it kills you, or it makes you their puppet. Drives crazy. Had a…” His thoughts turn to Hyakkaryōran Tsubaki and the macabre growth of barnacles left after her first angel kiss.[break][break]
“…run-in with ‘em. Rocket loves these guys. A lot. Crazy bastards try to harvest their neurotoxin, plus they want other stuff in their stomping ground. Getting the idea ‘bout how tangled the web is? This here’s the frontline of a war. These folk are caught in the crossfire.”

[attr="class","monty"]A file is pulled from thin air — Navy's poncho. Montgomery takes it over, looking across a few pages in quick glances since he didn't have much time to focus and read while he was discussing things with the sheriff. However, a few points did stand out.

The weak points. The glass skin. But it wasn't glass.

"This thing don't make no sense. How can ya have skin like glass but not shatter into pieces?" he muttered to no one in particular.

"So, the gist is you're dead or ya wish you were. Got it. Sounds fucked up. And these things — I guess their toxins, really — are all around Dewford is what yer getting at?" Montgomery looked over at him, lighting one of his cigarettes as he waved down the barkeep for an ashtray.

"What have y'all been doin' so far as protection? Or is there any that ya can do?"

“They’re…” His eyes shift to the folk around him. Good music and chatter keeps the others from overhearing. The bartender knows enough to not pay particular attention to the conversation. Instead, the old scoundrel busies himself polishing some glasses at the far end, giving them their distance.[break][break]
“They’re in a cave, not far from here. Granite Cave. You’ve probably seen it in postcards or something. Back before I got here, the place was just a tourist trap. Sort of place that drove archaeologists crazy. Now? Well…”[break][break]
He gulps. Navy does not fear these monsters. Not personally. He fears what horror they could inflict on the people around him.[break][break]
“Sometimes, they poison stuff. Send it out into the town. Pokemon, ones that look all fucked up. Barnacles for eyes, seaweed growing instead of hair. Weird shit. On top of that, Rocket tries to sneak into the cave on the regular. Keeping them out’s a full-time job.”[break][break]
As the words leave his mouth, he considers once more how all this must sound. Navy knows a man of action when he sees one. Instead of more talking, he finishes off his drink and stands up.[break][break]
“Fuck it. It sounds crazy when you just hear about it. Come on, I’ll show you.”
