Navy did indeed have to go through a lot of hoops to get the Sacred Sword's apprentice to Dewford Town, but there the little one was, ready and raring to go. He loved the way the foal moved, a certain pep in his step that looked like he was bucking an imaginary rider just through normal motions. This Pokémon looked quick -- and a good opponent for Swift despite the type advantage he had.

"Thanks for doing this again, Navy," Josh greeted his friend and boss, waving from the back of his Manectric, Saber. After having made it through his seventh week of rehab, he had at last been cleared to saddle up the electric dog he had cherished since the day he first became a trainer.

He never thought feeling pangs of static coursing through him could be so good. So refreshing. So empowering.

It is not Dewford’s sheriff that the knight of thunder should thank. A message from the sheriff buzzes when Keldeo is delivered to the appointed place, up the path to the mountain that sits in the middle of Dewford’s island. Ever since Regice’s attack, fey mist has played across the mountaintops. Mist gathers around the fourth sword of justice and Mauville’s gym leader. I’ll be late. Have fun. The message reads.[break][break]
From the mist emerges a wolf, sword in her mouth. She affects the image of an armed warrior, a valkyrie of old. Crowned in glory, faery wings on her back, she looks between them. Both are swords in need of refinement. Both must work together to complete her trial. She is no blacksmith like Gwyar Wledig or Aurelie Lefevre, but she is an old hand at tempering steel.[break][break]
She howls at them both, and it is a signal to come, lest she come to them first.

Pulling out his phone, Josh received a text from the Sheriff that he would be tardy. It seemed like he would be on his own for the training session with Keldeo. That was okay; he was a Champion now. One of Hoenn's top battling representatives. He could work with them on his own.

The howl made Josh's skin tingle in a way different than his wolf steed's static did. Saber returned the howl with a howl of his own, cantering toward the majestic, winged canine.

Reining the Manectric to a stop so he could see eye to eye with the fae wolf, he raised the RAINBOW FEATHER before him, starting to draw the Sign with hesitancy. Though Navy insisted that Zacian was not a god, Josh felt like he was in the presence of one. His eyes shifted toward Keldeo before returning to the feather glistening in a spectrum of color, completing the Sign's final stroke.

The black, white, and grey Beast materialized before the two legendary Pokémon, greeting them not with a howl, but a prideful roar that shook the mountainside like crashing thunder.

How sad it is that they so quickly think her a god. To think such, to express it through hesitation, is to mock simple human heroism. It is to shout to the world only that which is born great can be great.[break][break]
The wolf’s blood burns at that assertion. A hero is nothing more than one who knows they are free to steer their own destiny, no matter what the world has to say on the matter.[break][break]
Her powerful paws pull inward, muscles coiling with deadly purpose. She seems to disappear. No longer is she a wolf, but a bright blue blur coming for them faster than the eye can discern. A moment’s hesitation beckons a lifetime of pain.[break][break]
Raikou’s knight of thunder learns this lesson on the edge of a false swipe. Had she resolved to wield Ascalon with deadly intention, it would not stop a mere inch from his throat where he sits atop his steed. His head would have left its body, and any grand destiny he means to make for himself would be no more than a puddle upon the floor. It is a harsh lesson, but one she feels every aspiring fighter must be taught.[break][break]
She skips back, knowing that three on one amounts to terrible odds, but her eyes convey that same message once again.[break][break]
Come. They say, or I will not be so kind next time.

Zacian's speed was breathtaking. Was this what others saw when Josh rode his Zeraora? A blur of colors turned into Ascalon at his throat in a split second. It was a sign for Josh his Beast, and Keldeo to hold nothing back. If he could, he would. But the Knight of Thunder was still recovering. Slowly, but surely.

The young man slid down from Saber's back and gave Keldeo a gentle pat on the head. "Great warrior, I promise you, Swift will give it his all. But I am in no condition to fight alongside him directly. I am still weakened from my imprisonment. Your Avatar was there too. He knows what I went through. In spite of that, you still wish for me to fight?"

Keldeo, with a sense of resolve, bowed his head and clinked his horn against Ascalon as to accept the Zacian's challenge. He then rest the flat of the sword upon Josh's good arm. "I want to fight alongside you. But I can't. Swift will. I want to take up my sword. I really do. But if I do now, I'll never be able to fight again. Great warrior, I have come to not only help Keldeo, but observe and better understand how Swift fights. Please understand."

For as much as Josh wanted to push himself to his limits, he had to respect his own health.

And so, he ordered Swift to step forward, the electric Beast building up speed on the battleground he was to engage Zacian upon. For he had a new trick up his sleeve that neither Avatar nor Patron had seen yet. From the tips of his fangs and the bumps on his black crown formed spheres of electricity that zoomed toward Zacian so fast that they only could have come from the Johtonian god himself.

Her eyes speak no rebuke when he says he cannot go into battle with Swift. It is a rare, mad human who can lope into battle atop a steed. There is silent admiration of her courage, muddied only by distaste when the word avatar is spoken. Even if it is correct, this creature of romance detests the science of it, utterly devoid of romance or anything to add color to life.[break][break]
But Swift comes, swift as his name would have one think. Swift’s electro ball could have ended the contest then and there were it not for what separates man from monsters: technique. The great wolf’s blade pivots up quicker than anyone might expect. It’s not enough to stop the ball altogether, Swift is an echo of a god, but Zacian turns a deathblow into mere pain.[break][break]
Pain she can deal with. Pain is part and parcel for a warrior. She grips her blade, gathers strength in her muscles, and bounds for Swift. She jumps forward. Plain delight is in her eyes. It is not often that she is afforded the opportunity to play rough. Decorum is expected of those who wear titles like knight and hero. She must walk as if she is on eggshells, lest her power hurt others.[break][break]
Not here. Here, she attacks Swift with reckless abandon, swiping at him with fae energy pulsing along Ascalon’s blade.

For as swift as Johto's god of speed is, Ascalon is an equally mighty blade, and its wielder equally agile. Were it not a more serious training session, Josh would have asked Navy about a race between Swift and the Zacian. She was one of the speediest Pokémon on land. While not quite as fast as the Beast she battled, her technique was on point, able to use the Raikou's speed against him. "Swift, get out of there! QUICK ATTACK!" Josh ordered.

In the split second it took the Knight of Thunder to issue his orders, the Zacian was almost on top of his precious partner already. It was almost like Swift was battling himself, having never faced an opponent with such speed before. Ash flew from the Raikou's side as though it were blood, the tiger squealing like a common Skitty whose paw was stepped on.

That squeal was all it took for Keldeo to spring into action, drawing his SACRED SWORD and lowering his head. Josh gasped in awe as he watched the hooved water-type accelerate, using the jets on all four of them intermittently to propel himself faster than his muscles alone could carry him. "Good save, Keldeo!" Josh encouraged the apprentice swordsman as Swift stumbled, recovering from the sting of the fairy-type's blade.

She steps forward, ready to keep up the offensive momentum. Momentum is everything in battle. One motion leads into the next, vicious calculus that ends in death or defeat. Keldeo is a new problem, introduced, biding his time before entering the fray. When their blades clash, the older swordswoman’s eyes communicate a clear message.[break][break]
Good.[break][break]
Before they skid apart. Two against one are poor odds, but this hero has faced far worse. She remembers old battles in Galar, where two unsung heroes stood against many atop their king’s steeds. To give anything less than her all to two who would defend this region would be to render insult unto both of them. Ascalon billows with light.[break][break]
Her own sacred sword sweeps across them in a wide arc, deadly as a hurricane. Divide and conquer. She does not yet know which is the weak link, but she will test them both, find out, and press her offensive.

Zacian seemed happy with Keldeo's progress and growing resolve, Ascalon violently colliding with the apprentice's horn in a shower of blue and pink sparks. Even so, she would not let up, the holy sword sweeping across both of them and threatening to cleave them in two. Swift's specialty was in speed, and purely speed. In a contest of velocity, no land Pokémon could outrun him. Pure speed, though, was more unwieldy than Zacian's supreme agility and reaction time. By the time the Beast could flex his legs, the sword had already cut deep into Swift, ash erupting from the direction of the cut much like blood would spray from a living creature.

Even further evidence that Swift was not a living Pokémon. The monochrome Raikou truly was a construct, like MATIAS SILPH had said. The acceptance did not change Josh's affection and love for the electric legendary one bit. Even if he wasn't alive in the same way other Pokémon were, Swift was still his Raikou. Exactly how he wanted him to be.

In the split second it took to cleave through Swift, Keldeo was able to parry the SACRED SWORD attack with a SACRED SWORD of his own, though his muscles buckled. They buckled as much as the Raikou struggled to stay on his feet, ash still falling from the point of impact. This battle was even more difficult than the one with Kyle. He was being beaten at his own game.

Even so, Swift remained defiant, determined to protect the little one. Standing between Zacian and Keldeo, his black crown shimmered through the fairy mist, as though preparing to REFLECT an oncoming attack. Upon hearing a weak-sounding roar, Keldeo became filled with determination, an AQUA JET catapulting him skyward. Extending his own SACRED SWORD further, the water-type turned into a living buzzsaw, pinwheeling toward Zacian. Josh watched in horror.

Was this the kind of power Laurence Anderson had been warning him about?

But as my sworn sword brother so loves to say, we are warriors. To battle in good company is a warrior’s greatest delight. It makes me eager, eager to push them, eager to press myself against the young one’s buzzsaw.[break][break]
Ascalon glows. It glows with the power of a giant-slaying blade. It glows with delight. I meet the buzzsaw with mine own behemoth blade, a clash that would shatter all were it not for the ashen one’s shield. Power splashes across the path. Force brushes back the trees, shatters branches. It is as much the young one’s power as it is mine.[break][break]
I step back, feeling pain for the first time in weeks, and I smile at the young ones.

Keldeo let out a wail as Zacian's BEHEMOTH BLADE loudly sparked against the water-type's SACRED SWORD. His lips opened to reveal gnashing teeth, standing up to Ascalon's strength with everything he had. The young swordsman began sweating profusely, his leg muscles convulsing harshly as he struggled to stand against the fae-wrought sword's brutal weight. His resolution fell short, cleaving through the light of the horn-blade.

The legendary wolf's blade continued to bear down upon Keldeo until Swift came to the rescue, a psychic shield slowing its descent for a critical split second needed to back away. The Raikou bore the full brunt of the BEHEMOTH BLADE, an eruption of ash flying outward in the direction of Ascalon's slash. Swift disintegrated before returning to the RAINBOW FEATHER. "Swift!!" Josh cried, Saber barking in an effort to redouble his trainer's focus.

For Keldeo was still out there, all by his lonesome.

Rearing so high that his back pointed almost completely vertical, a HYDRO PUMP helix left his exposed hooves directly for Zacian's face.

The two blades clashed with jaw-dropping force, leaving Keldeo standing... but breathless. He expectantly stared at Josh, wanting the Manectric's rider to fight alongside him. "I would... but you're too lithe and small," Josh said after tilting his head toward the apprentice. "But you don't need bit and bridle for us to be a team, Keldeo. If Swift and I are your friends... then show us what that friendship means. What you do to those who hurt our friends."

Though it was a play-fight, that BEHEMOTH BLADE hurt just as much as in true combat. He didn't need his sword to be a threat in combat. With the fallen Raikou in his immediate memory, Keldeo galloped toward Zacian before about-facing and delivering a swift series of RETALIATING kicks.

He may have been alone on the battlefield, but he was not without support. Even when the Raikou was at rest inside the RAINBOW FEATHER, he was there for Josh and anyone who fought alongside him.

A strange sound fills the road as Keldeo kicks. Zacian laughs. Blood is drawn. She is no god, and she bleeds like any other Pokemon. All the same, even as her teeth are shorn from her mouth and blood splatters across the ground, she laughs. It is a rare crack in a stoic mask, a hint of the girl who once was and shall never be again, a ghost of one long dead.[break][break]
She smiles, as much as a wolf may smile. Keldeo’s retaliation proves true and she dips her head in acknowledgement of the effort. It is not defeat, for she has not been defeated, but she knows pain when it comes. Through the oath shared with the Warrior, her teeth begin to regrow in her mouth. Another howl resounds along the road.[break][break]
“Looks like you guys are having fun.” Another voice says. Her sworn brother arrives, all smiles himself. “Looks like she got started without me. So. Josh, Keldeo, how d’you two like Zacian?”
