WHEN YOU ENTER THE FIRST FLOOR, a dojo student greets you. the tower is grand, smelling of incense and wood. sunlight seeps in through the paper paneling and windows high above. before you can leave the genkan, they politely remind you to take off your shoes and to place them in the cubbies to the right side.[break][break]

ahead, a rapidash awaits the party, flames billowing from its nostrils. the dojo student announces, "WELCOME TO YOUR FIRST CHALLENGE! YOU MUST AVOID TAKING FIRE-TYPE DAMAGE AT ALL COSTS WHILE LANDING AN ATTACK THREE TIMES." she grins, "YOU BETTER BE PREPARED. MY RAPIDASH IS QUICK."[break][break]

she guides you all onto the floor and waits for you all to pick your pokemon. a rotomi is stationed to the left, should you require it. as soon as you all summon your pokemon, the rapidash fires a FIRE BLAST against your entire party.[break][break][break]

sparing a wry glance at his group, dominic finds himself wondering for maybe the thousandth time in his lifetime how he managed to get into this exact situation. that priam is acquainted with marcel he already knew - but the league head scientist?

regardless, the first actual trial was taking off his boots without the concealed knife clattering to the ground. he curses under his breath and makes fleeting eye contact with marcel - long enough to mouth a very empathetic what the fuck.

dominic really only knows how to fight fire with fire. when the challenge begins in earnest, he releases his houndoom in a plume of flames. he knows the pokemon will bear the brunt of the rapidash’s attack due to its FLASH FIRE ability.

"give us a… playful CRUNCH, alright?" he orders the houndoom - the qualifier necessary because he knows the pokemon is accustomed to going for the jugular. doing as instructed, the canine will shrug off the FIRE BLAST and will close the distance to snap at the rapidash’s legs with CRUNCH.

there are reminders of his own home in petalburg in the decor, he notes as the rotomi dispenses his chosen pokemon. marcel takes the pokeball and releases his typhlosion. FLASH FIRE renders the rapidash's attack useless--he has a feeling everyone else is going for a similar strategy.

Lucas was ecstatic to finally meet some of Priam's friends. He rushed to ask for names and extend a hand in welcome to any who'd take it. As he does so he noticed the significant age gap between them and Priam. He's quick to move on from the glaring fact, since it was the same for him.

Lucas retrieved a pokeball from the Rotomi and returned to the group. He released it and watched as its FLASH FIRE devoured Rapidash's attack.

he thought lucas lane needed more friends, and so he brought him along so he can meet the other old people he knew in his life. they weren't that much friendly though, and it makes priam nervous if the plan would really work.

the arcanine is taken out along with the rest of the flash fire pokemon. it absorbs the fire blast with ease, avoiding to take any fire-type damage. the only other thing to do was to land an attack.

"dragon pulse!"

a blast of energy comes from the arcanine's mouth as it attacks the rapidash.

dominic shakes lane's hand - if a little stiffly - and then claps him on the shoulder in a slightly over-familiar way when the first challenge is done. at the second floor, he watches the spoink spring into the air - his head remains static but his eyes follow it upward. dominic takes a moment to collect a pokeball and releases a gengar.

the pokemon rubs its tiny nub hands together in a conspiratorial manner and looks toward dominic for orders. dominic points upward, where the speck of the spoink's body can still be seen.

"hit it with TOXIC," he says to the pokemon. dominic doesn't know the specifics of it, but something about TOXIC when used by the POISON-TYPE ensures the move always finds its target.

the gengar watches the spoink for a moment and then launches a handful of something purple that simultaneously gaseous and liquid into the air.

he looks at everyone, who seemed to be just doing their own things. priam decides to chat it up and liven up the party.

"aren't you guys having fun? this is fun, right? just bonding... between old people... how old are you guys again?"

they're probably like thirty-seven, priam guesses.

the arcanine's pokeball remains on the belt on his hip, while he retrieves another pokeball from his pc to deal with the next challenge. he sees it bounce high, and priam wonders if they'll fail if it lands from the air before they hit it with something. not wanting to risk it, he orders his next pokemon with a move

"hurricane!"

the dragonite emerges from the pokeball and flaps its wings hard enough to turn a simple gust of wind to a turbulent tornado that reaches high enough. rest in peace spoink.

Lucas was happy to see a spoink for once that wasn't guzzling its weight in sugar. As he waited in line for the Rotomi he pivoted his view between the back of Priam's head and the spoink repeatedly.

"Oh I'm um," Lucas is caught off guard as he released his minun. "Late twenties."

It took Lucas a moment to catch site of the tiny dot in the air that was spoinkt. Pointing toward it he directed the Minun's attention in its direction. "Over there buddy, thunder them!" Without a cloud in sight the minun improvised the attack. Jaw unhinged it released a thunder created within the depths of its body.

"kosuke." he hadn't quite yet caught on to priam's intention with bringing them all here--other than to complete the challenge. he enters the next room as quickly as they'd completed the challenge in the last.

bringing out another pokeball, marcel gives a little tsk at priam's comment. "we're not that old, you know." when lucas answers, he tacks on a "same." for politeness' sake.

he watches the spoink leap into the air before he gives a slight nod in its direction. "thunder." his electivire steadily aims with its arm before shooting out a ruthless bolt of THUNDER. perhaps a bit too vicious for his liking. he gives his pokemon a pat on the shoulder anyway, it had done its job after all.

late twenties... priam takes a while to process the newfound information given how serious and seemingly mature both lucas and marcel are. he supposed it was because he compares them to dom.

"dom, i can believe that you're also in your twenties," he tells him.

as soon as they get up to the next level, priam quickly goes for the rotomi to take his own pokemon. "the quicker we get out of this, the sooner we won't share a room with that weirdo," he voices out his internal thoughts for the rest of his party to hear.

with a few input commands, he throws out his forretress to defend against the horn drill with its sturdy ability. part of him is tempted to have it explode so no one has to experience this weird bdsm fetishist.

he wasn't sure where he learned the word, but he's certain that it's from someone in the same room as him.

Lucas had a puzzled look and scrunched eyebrows when he saw the dojo student. He opened his mouth to ask if they were alright, but quickly closed it when she spoke.

"We're sorry about him," Lucas said quickly after Marcel's reprimand.

Following Priam and Marcel's lead Lucas released a pokemon with sturdy. A shiny donphan that barely got a chance to take in its surroundings before enduring the drill horn. Donphan's sturdy hide resisted the fatal damage.

"bonding between old people..." dominic echoes priam, his brow knitting together momentarily. he nods along to lane and maeda when they affirm that they're in their late twenties but offers no more until priam addresses him directly.

"i'm twenty-eight, priam," he says slowly, not sure whether to sound offended or not.
