The Mirror Move slapped back at Big Habanero, batting each of their heads once. SLAP! SLAP! The heads bobbled and bonked together, and Doduo let out a squark of confusion and pain. "Shake it off buddy!" Zac called, and Big Habanero took a few step back to recombobulate.

Four wide eyes settled on Pidgeot, and then, with a quick run up, Big Habanero raced towards the bird and jumped, trying to land on the back of their enemy and attack from above!

Big Habanero used JUMP KICK!

Zac noticed a splotch of darkness off the starboard side of his paddleboard. He pushed off the shallow bottom with his oar, floating closer to the cloud. "And what's in here?" he asked, curious. 

Tirtouga finned through the blackness, and it dispersed somewhat, revealing a shocked and upside-down Inkay. "Oh hey buddy!" Zac said, waving at the little squid as it righted itself. "These little guys flip over to confuse and surprise enemies, then shoot them with ink and escape in the confusion." Zac chuckled, it was a pretty hilarious tactic. 

Zac dropped a Safari Ball down on the little prankster, capturing it. "Let's see if we can't find what scared this little guy!"

No sooner had Byron headbutted the ball at Infernape, then it had been returned by a powerful punch. The volleyball cratered the sand, setting Zac at an unenviable disadvantage. The only upside was that it had missed his Pokemon. Nobody had been frozen. Yet. 

"Okay, uh, Tempi!" Zac said, grabbing the ball before Byron could get to it. He tossed the Spheal up into the sky, and Poliwrath leapt skyward, slapping the Spheal down towards Maverick's side with a HELPING HAND!

Zac took notes. He recorded the whole lecture, sure, but every time Ki mentioned something particularly important (like how to clean cat vomit out of a carpet), he felt compelled to make a note of two, for easy reference. "Ahuh...yep...okay great...what? Both? Well you're the expert."

By the time Ki was finished, Zac had half filled his notebook, and the Minior were getting tired. "Thanks mate, I think I know where to start now. I can call you if there's a problem, right?" Zac asked. He felt excited, brimming with knowledge, and also extremely underprepared and overwhelmed. 

Big Habanero managed to struggle free, and set to work pecking gently at Sunny's fur to remove some tangles that had formed from their playing. Bulu, meanwhile, had given up on trying to best the sly cat after running right into the tree. Some things were just not worth the effort. Score 1 for Sprinkles.

Natsuki's eyes crossed as her prey split. A growl bubbled in her throat, and she shot left. No! Right. No! Urrrrrggh! LEFT! She surged through the water, jaws slamming shut on the flailing tail of the SUBSTITUTE.

Natsuki tore the construct apart with her ICE FANGS, just before Carvanha snapped down on the gator's tail, making her FLINCH and drop her prey, which broke apart into chunks of fading light. 

Natsuki destroyed the SUBSTITUTE
Carvanha hit natsuki with CRUNCH

"Passho Plus+," Zac said, getting a hint for the first time that his opponent may not be fully sighted. "It's got a real citrus punch, and you can really taste the space!" He cracked open his own can and took a sip. "Oh yeah." 

"So, 2v2 okay by you?" Zac asked, pulling out a Pokeball. He opened it onto the beach, sending out blonde trio. "I'm using Dugtrio, and, uh, Tapu Bulu!" He pointed over to where the bull was resting underneath a sprouting of palm trees. "He's over to my right," Zac said helpfully.

"People say you've got to chase your passion. Or find it." Zac shook his head. "Passions are like lenses. When you find something that interests you enough, you start seeing it everywhere," Zac said. Since taking up the mantle of gym leader, he had needed to get more and more creative in how he integrated his passion into the world. 

"I want to film Pokemon, and there are a hundred little points during the day where I can do that. I use Miniors to record the gym battles," he said, pointing up to where two of the spheres were floating above them, each strapped with a camera. A bright blue Minior filmed Rocko as he whipped up a SANDSTORM, blasting the Spheal back towards Gavin. 

"I use game cams to record comings and goings on my property, and a headcam or a spy button to grab little moments while I'm out and about!" Zac said, pointing towards one of the buttons on his wildly flapping shirt.

"Whoa! Wadda we have here?" Zac asked rhetorically, as his Tirtouga swooped in for a closer look at the scuttling coastal critter. "These bay-dwelling bugs may look imposing, but they're as gentle as they come. Big, sad eyes, layered plates, and- oop! Off he goes!" Zac exclaimed, watching the Wimpod shoot off into deeper, safer, waters. "What a spritely little bugger!"

"Oh HELL yeah!" Zac shouted, as the massive Ultra Beast burst onto the scene. It was gorgeous. It was massive and imposing. It was the biggest bloody Pokemon Zac had ever seen. But only just.

"Kev! I've got a full-sized playmate for you!" Zac said, as he stamped the packed sand of the arena. The ground shuddered and then buckled as the huge metal serpent burrowed out of the earth. Kev's steel skin gleamed up the summer light, his plates and juts burning as if they were freshly forged in the heat of the mantle.

Kev sized up Stella. His segments scraped and groaned as he pulled himself up to his full height, which was still a few feet shorter than the massive, ship-like alien. "What do you say mate? Ready for a tussle?" Zac asked. Kev rumbled like an excited avalanche, and threw himself head-first at the beast.

Kev used HEAD SMASH!

Zac blinked. Slowly. And took another long drink from his empty can. "Oh," he said, grabbing another from the dwindling crate he'd set on the table. 

His phone buzzed, and he pulled it out, flipped it open, and read the email. It was just an update from Archeology Monthly. Important, sure, but something that could wait. The message did pull at some strings in his memory though. A memory of a long left returned message on Zac's answering machine.

He'd meant to say something to Kaz before at their battle. And then at their other battle. And at their advertising shoot. And then when Kaz had been at the bar, right before he disappeared. Zac cracked open his messaging app, clicked on his soda, and tapped out a message, one forefinger at a time. 

Heya Kaz mate., 
howya goinb? it's preyt good at ther bar but it shoiuld be you herre too.

Com and drimk, we\re almist out od Charja-Cola, and i gotta derink the zabsi.

"Ki? Yeah we're mates from way back! I met him at a baking competition at a mall," Zac said, as if that explained things. He caught and held Jayden's eyes, making sure that they understood each other. "Ki and Liam are close friends, actually. We met at a jet propulsion seminar." Subtle as ever, Ramsay, Zac thought, congratulating himself. "And afterwards we went out and got fried chicken." That wasn't a euphemism, Ki just seemed to be a big fan of fried, foreign dishes.

"Me too, aside from the stuff in my garden," Zac admitted. Tapu Bulu clanged closer, and went to gently headbutt Fini. It was a more familiar movement of affection, and Zac relaxed as he saw it. The grass around the pair erupted with lush herbs -Rosemary, sorrel, and spearmint- A veritable spice-rack of lush, edible plants that wilted as soon as they'd formed.

The herbs faded, and a wave of specters formed and dissolved among the shifting foliage. Ghosts of the past, trapped in this temporary forest. Had they summoned by the fusion of Tapu powers? "I didn't know they could do that!" Zac said, bushy eyebrows raising as the pale images of the dead.

Byron was pleased with his countering punch. Too pleased, as the follow up BODY SLAM took him completely by surprise. Nidoking was sent tumbling to the ground, pinned and paralyzed by the force of the full-body impact. "No worries mate! You've got him right where you want him!" Zac called, giving his Pokemon a big thumbs-up.

The Nidoking growled, and struggled to get one of his pinned arms free. He wriggled the spined fist out from under Ora and, with a triumphant roar, slammed it into the opponent's side with a POISONOUS JAB!

-Nidoking was hit by BODY SLAM
-Nidoking was Paralyzed!
-Nidoking used POISON JAB (also Poison Point, if you feel like getting poisoned)

Pokemon fell like dominoes. First Terra was knocked out by Helen, and then the volcanic cow was taken out by Zen! 

Meanwhile, in Eris' based Kev finally reverted, his mega energy expiring just moments before he was taken down by the combined might of his opponents. he went down in a flaming heap. Even a tough monster like him could only take so much punishment. 

That left Zac with two Pokemon: Odium and Zappa. "Okay guys, how are we feeling?" Zac asked. Odium looked at him with dull eyes. The Tyranitar was not up to battling. The double Hyper Beam had left him all but fainted. "Okay Zappa. And you?" The Heliolisk chirped. He wasn't confident, but he was willing.

"Let's go then!" Zac shouted, and the pair sprinted off towards what was left of Eris' castle. "Zappa! BULLDOZE!" Zac shouted, and his partner raced forward, collecting sand and rocky debris to form a plow in from of himself. The wedge broadened, and like an icebreaker heading right for a massive iceberg, Zappa crashed into the castle.

Zac was relieved to see that Bo's Rhyhorn had such a powerful appetite. It was a sure sign of returning vitality. The body needed sustenance to heal, big battles were often followed by big meals. Lack of appetite was a worrisome sign.

"Odium! You're up!" Zac called, feeling the spotlight move closer to himself. Just Tyranitar, Nyx, and then he was up. And boy how he'd worked up an empty belly.

Tyranitar grabbed the watermelon with short, rocky arms. He eyed it suspiciously, as if searching for traps or poison. The he carefully maneuvered the whole thing into his mouth.
