"You got it mate!" Zac said, eager for an adventure with his buddy. " and I did a pretty good scoping out of the insides, so I know my way around," he said, with far too much confidence. "It's pretty wild! A whole forest, just inside a big tree! A totally unique ecosystem. Maybe even a new biome!" 

"It's a bit of a departure from our usual rock and sand escapades, but I'm excited. Hey! We could even bring the monkeys!"

He quickly spotted another head. More teeth, more empty eye sockets. It wasn't what he needed, but he put it in his bag anyway. Two heads are better than one! Zac thought, picturing Big Habanero. 

Zac paddled through the cracked and broken kelp beds, before a flash of waving green caught his attention. Greg was on top of one of the rocks, waving wildly for his attention. Did he find something?

Greg lead him between two boulders, to where a chunk of earth had been lifted like a paver, and Zac saw it. The pale glistening of fake bone. He ruffled the monkey's head, and the pair set about excavating the find.

The unearthed chunk might have been a tail, or it might have been nothing at all. It was hard to tell with Glitch's fakes. Hell, they'd tricked him entirely the first time. 

"Best keep it just in case," Zac said, and he put it in his bag beside the Head piece. "Lulu, up for some more digging?" he asked the massive creature. She roared, shaking her wet head and spraying fat, dirty droplets across the lake. "That's the spirit! Let's get back in there!" Zac laughed, and the trio dove back in. 

The Ancient Power had done more than pull up the strange piece of tail. It had transformed the kelp bed. Huge juts of stone slashed up from the bottom like cliffs, and gaggles of boulders lay resting together like nests of some gigantic bird. 

Now this is a biome, Zac thought, and the three split up, paddling among the rocks as they searched for any hints of unearthed fossil.

Their first piece: a wide, gaping maw. "There must be a hundred teeth in that mouth!" Zac said as they brought it to the surface. He wrapped the piece and put it safely in his bag, away from any attacking turtles. "Next one, ay? usually hides them close together."

This time Greg was eager to help. The little monkey paddled down, planted his stick in the mud and sand, and his Grassy Surge forced up a crop of tangling sea weed! 

But there was one section free from the wriggling grass. There. Zac thought, pointing it out as he gave Lulu a slow slap on the flank. The mammoth swam down and used her Ancient Power to pull the strange section out of the sand.

No wonder he's having so much trouble.
He doesn't have any bloody teeth. 

"Okay so just soft foods then. No problems mate, Kaz and I will bring you more smoothies and the best pureed veggies you've ever had. My grandad lost all his teeth years ago, so I'll check in with him for some recommendations, yeah?"

Xanthos story was complete. They knew how he got here and why he was in the ruins. The only part left was to fill in the future. "So you were a historian! Is that what you want to do now? If you want we can get you books and TV and stuff. Do you know what an internet is?"

They headed back to the water and got kitted out for diving. Zac picked out a trio of matching green goggles and snorkels. "Who's up for a swim, ay?" he asked, wading into the water.

Zac and Greg clung to Lulu's back as the mammoth swam out into the fake ocean. Once they were deep enough, she took a huge, thundering breath dove eagerly down to the sandy bottom. The water was surprisingly warm!

Crackling sea ice encased her tusks, and she carved deep trenches in the floor as she searched for fake fossils.

"Okay I felt that one!" Zac exclaimed, wide eyed. "And that wasn't part of your avatar powers?"

The sandy tremors underfoot reminded him of the Groudon power he had briefly held in Mt Chimney. It's not from a legendary? How was that possible? Did this mean that he could learn how to shape earth again? And the gust of air! 

"Have you unlocked some sort of elemental powers?" Zac asked, trying to piece things together. He'd never heard of this sort of ability not being linked to Pokemon. "Are...are you a Pokemon?"

"I can do two things at once," Zac assured him with a grin. The wood around him creaked, finally starting to warp as his powers took hold. "I heard about some wild stuff in Sootopolis, and I'm expecting a call from AQUA about that soon, but so far I've only read the files. Something about a big spire disappearing." 

"I don't need to tell you though, you were there! I saw you mentioned in the report," Zac said, nodding his respect. "Have you been back yet? I went in to check out the tree. What a beauty!"

"Ghosts?" Zac asked, innocently. He had only just remembered that was terrified of the spirit Pokemon. He'd half hoped that they would be able to tell scary stories, or clear out the wailing creatures that seemed to be haunting the roof. He quickly decided that, for now, the very real presence of ghosts in the abandoned factory should be kept a secret. "Nah, I don't think there's anything spooky around," Zac assured the captain. 

After all, it was hardly playful banter to mention that there had been a terribly murder in this very factory almost twenty years ago to the day. 

Zac checked the date on his archeologists pinup calendar.

Actually it was exactly twenty years ago that the murder happened.

"What's this about pixel tiddies?" he asked , as he joined the other watching play FROAKER. The little blue sprite jumped across lily pads with stuttering precision. It seemed unlikely that the creature had breasts, but you never knew with video games.

To the victor go the spoils: a cool new headband for Niamh and a giant, galumphing, dung-breathed friend! "Thanks for holding the jar," he said to Falinx. "Sometimes you just have to get your wings dirty, you know?" 

Kibou looked up at their new teammate, who stared back with the glazed eyes of a lost Psyduck. Rampardos cocked its head to the side, and he could almost hear the creature's brain clattering around inside its skull like loose gravel. 

"I'm going to go and scout," Kibou said, and he flopped on ahead, surveying the succulent landscape with his thin, squinted eyes. There was much to see, he assumed.

Having thoroughly looked at things, he rested in the shade of one of the cairns. Soon after, the party joined him. Their new dinosaur pal brought up the rear, presumably all tuckered out from headbutting cacti and eating dirt.

Suddenly a beast dropped from the sky!

A foul, bumpy, stamping, rock-eyed old fossil that was bloody likely to smash their precious jar!

Sprinkles launched into action, slapping the clods out of the old dinosaur. Kibou found himself passing the jar to one of the Falinx, and attacking with everything.

Creamy, crescent scales slashed through the air like wet croissants, weakening Rampardos's resolve.

Kibou squidged in fast, closing the distance and savaging the monster's ankles with his venomous bite. "Mffamar ffhanmf mm fmomr!" he shouted, mouth full of dinosaur. 

But Kibou wasn't done there. He spat out the grimy leg of the stomping asshole, and battered the creature's knees with his deep, surging strikes from his full-grown wings. Pale feathers were strewn across the battleground, knocked loose by the wild blows.

In a final act of bravery, Kibou put himself right in harm's way: underneath the creature's worn and leathery feet. Kibou drilled downwards, digging a deep, ankle-snapping pit that would topple the bastard once and for all!

"Sounds like some pretty top tier training then, if it changes his whole moveset and fighting style," Zac said, impressed. "There won't be anyone who can stand against you now!" 

Not that there had ever been any doubt in Zac's mind over who the best martial artist in Hoenn was. 

He watched as the steam pressed against the oak ceiling in billowing clouds. He could almost see figures in the clouds.

"Sounds like the world's your Shellder mate."

"Greg!?" Zac said in alarm, eyebrows shooting up as the little monkey saved him at the last moment. "I thought he was down for the count!" He wrapped the simian savior in a rough embrace, holding him close to his glowing body—

"Oh. Ah, it may have been my Avatar powers healing him," Zac said with a laugh. "Little bugger was pressed right up against me. Probably got revived when I was trying to heal Nyx!"

"Four! Counting my own, though. You, me, Doug, and Noah.," Zac said, counting the names on his fingers. "I'll have to get around to challenging the others one of these days. Thanks a bunch Melody! This challenge was a whole barrel of fun!"

The thick steam parted, and Zac beheld the legendary pose.

"Uhhhh, well I can see why you call it legendary," Zac said, encouragingly, as he picked up Kaz's towel and handed it back to him. "Though I'm not sure how practical it would be in battle. Does Domon have to do it too?"

Zac was back, with Greg, Lulu, and the first half of a Precision Badge.

"Howzit going everyone! Name's Zac Ramsay!" He said, looking around. He barely knew any of the new faces, and that filled him with excitement. Greg hooted from on top of Lulu's shaggy head as Zac did a quick tour of the room, shaking hands. 

"Great to meet you all. Anyway this is Greg the Grookey, and Lulu the Mamoswine. They're both seasoned garden diggers, top-tier fossilators, and they each have a Certificate III in Paleontological Revivification from the TAFE in Lavaridge." Zac proudly held up the two framed certificates.

"After we accidentally tried to revive fake fossils last contest we went out and got a bit of education but we're back, and we're ready for action!"
