A hurricane descended upon the camp. For a short moment the Steelix’s assault came to a halt as it moved closer to the ground, latching onto the ground as much as it could. The chances of being lifted by the winds weren’t high, but they weren’t zero either.

Besides it took an opportunity as it laid down there to take aim at the source of these winds, before summoning a particularly long STONE EDGE aiming to take down the attacker, lethally if they were unlucky or bad at dodging.

Meanwhile Elinor joined the Comfey in looking for its trainer, for a moment she pondered how it managed to speak so fluently in Human, but she figured there might be some machinery capable of translating it.

But her thoughts were quickly pulled away from such a trivial matter as a Shadow Ball shot through the air in front of the Comfey alerted the pair to the appearance of a Banette and its trainer.

The gun in hand caught Elinor’s attention alongside his twisted leg. Luckily for her Kartana was out of her pocket and flying with deadly precision toward the gunman’s wrist intent on severing its connection with the weapon with a skilled Delivery of FURY CUTTER. Since Elinor had yet to realize her Ultra Beast were trying to save them she moved in front of the Comfey trying to play the shield for a Pokemon she barely knew as the gun-hammer begin to go back.

Elinor simply gave a hand-wavey ‘don’t worry about it’ gesture when Ever began to sound apologetic. It wasn’t all that important in the grand scheme of their mission and the Pokemon he listed afterwards sounded like they would be plenty helpful.

But then something caught Ever’s attention. Poor lighting aside it seemed he found something that had both initially missed. And once Elinor got closer she even saw what it was. A Lycanroc that had been injured.

Ever seemed to have the situation under control, so she let him handle it. “There is a possibility that she was. Though it does seem odd for them to just let her escape, if that is the case.” She knew Rocket was many things, but wasteful when it came to opportunities to capture Pokemon weren’t one of them.

“It sounds like we are quite similar in that regard.” Much as Elinor didn’t like to admit it, planning had never been her strong suit. “Maybe we ought to just Blitz them. Hit them hard and fast, you know.” She suggested.

She allowed him all the time he required to consider it while healing the Lycanroc. Honestly she didn’t even keep track of how long that was, and it didn’t matter much either as within that time one of her Pokemon returned.

The Talonflame came bearing news. It had found what they were looking for.

“Yeah, Yeah!” Elinor replied, even giving a nonchalant hand-wave. Only when she was certain Lars wasn't watching did she take a quick moment to check that her recording equipment was in fact recording.

And so their journey continued in the direction of the sound. Alas for all the moving they did it did not seem to bring them any closer. Elinor figured whatever had been making the sound was moving as well.

“Hey! Are you seeing anything up there?”

This was the last performance, a final time to show off their toughness.

And as The Aggron took to the stage alongside its trainer it began to rain boulders down the middle in a fine line going from one end of the stage to the other with ROCK SLIDE leaving just enough space for the iron Behemoth to take position at the far end.

“And now for our final performance, a test of toughness and strength.”

The Aggron took position

“I am sure you have all seen this before, it is a classic for a reason after all. Gron here will pierce every boulder from that boulder - “ She gestures at the first rock right in front of the Aggron and down the line. “- And to that one, down the middle.” Elinor allowed the audience a moment to guess how it would do so. After all, Aggron’s weren’t exactly known for having a lot of ranged attacks.

Elinor then snapped her fingers letting Gron know to begin.

It opened its mouth and in its jaws a drop of water formed that grew and grew until it looked like a ball caught in the jaws of the beast. And then the pressure burst and the HYDRO PUMP poured forth like a high pressurized beam of water that easily pierced through the boulders one by one leaving a nearly circular hole in the middle of each boulder until it pierced the very last one.

And with that display of power their performance came to an end they both bowed and left the stage in someone elses’ capable hands.

Elinor listened to the options Ever had, Some fairly good options they were, but she agreed it might be better to keep them in reserve. Corviknight’s were easy to spot, and Gliscor well, she didn’t have a whole lot of experience with at.

Elinor closed her eyes in thought for a moment. “Of course, let’s keep your Gliscor in reserve.” She spoke. She retrieved three Pokéballs from her belt, out of them came a Talonflame, Dragapult, and Hisuian Braviary. She quickly explained to them what they were looking for, and with that done each flying pokemon set out to look.

With that done she returned her attention to Ever.

“While they are looking we should probably consider a plan of attack. So, what other Pokemon do you have, and what is your strengths and weaknesses in combat.” This was all important information that ought to be shared while they waited for their scouts to return.

The sound of battle, miniature earthquakes and sudden sprouting rocky stalagmite spears deafened any coherent pleas for help.

Still the pinkette could swear she heard something calling to her. She looked around grunts were fleeing, fires burning, but no human seemingly called for her.

But wait there was a Comfey? And it approached her. For a moment she assumed hostility, and she had been about to signal for her Kartana partner to deal with it, but then she took a second glance and realized it wasn’t approaching with ill intention.

And as it spoke and something translated, it all became clear that this little one needed her help.

“I have not. But I can help you look!” She offered. Still, very much surprised and in awe of whatever was directly translating the words this Comfey was saying. She did want to ask about that, but given the situation it wasn’t the time.

A wide confident smirk emerged well as Lars commented on the dangers of their curiosity before suggesting that they check the origin of the sounds.

“Of course we shall!” She almost eagerly replied, before releasing her own mount.

The mighty impressive looking huge Steelix appeared by her side, lowering itself momentarily for her to climb on top of its head just like a trained Copparajah might.

She jumped on with a movement clearly well trained before the pair began to move in the direction of the sound.

Much like Thomas, she didn’t require much persuasion to take up the job of dealing with a DRK Triad Outpost, actually, she didn’t require any persuasion at all. She had pounced at the chance before she even finished reading the mission details.

Side by side with Thomas she readied herself, and considered for a moment his question.

“I have personally never been one for Stealth. But if that’s what you would prefer I can do that.” Elinor replied, letting the choice be up to Thomas. She figured it was a kindness she could afford him for all that he had done.

As a Ranger it wasn’t Elinor’s job to fight the Rocket presence. She was supposed to take stock of the environmental changes and ease its integration into the overall Hoenn ecosystem.

But be that as it may she could not sit idly by as reports of missing and potentially kidnapped people came in, especially not when they were in her designated section. To make it even better there was a potential Rocket base in her area as well. And so, she decided to give them a visit.

She was met with aggression. The Rockets there knew who she was, if not by face then by reputation as she approached atop a Steelix. She might have been inclined to let them give up if they desired to do so. But unfortunately they did not.

The Rocket Grunts attacked and she replied in kind letting Steelix break the earth and whatever fortifications they had made with great spikes of STONE EDGE. Some Grunts screamed and ran, others tried to regroup.

Once Steelix had made its way past the fortifications Elinor would make her way down. Taking a moment to look around while she let the Steelix handle the few grunts that thought it wise to fight against her.

While she was looking around she heard something from somewhere. It sounded like a voice, though it was quite hard to hear over the sound of battle.

The next part of the performance began. Elinor gauged the various competitors and saw that they were putting on some rather good shows. And for a moment she feared the show she had planned might be a bit too simple. But she would go with it nonetheless.

And so the pair walked onto the stage.

“What is Toughness?” This was the opening question Elinor posed as the pair found the center of the stage.

Aggron summoned a ring of boulders around them with a ROCK SLIDE, making sure that they were still visible to the crowd. They had but one way to escape if they desired it.

“To us, Toughness is the courage to protect those we hold dear in the face of danger.” as Elinor spoke boulders formed above them, a veritable avalanche of rock that could crush them both. Aggron let the ROCK SLIDE fall toward them, with their only escape being forward. But neither ran as the boulders fell. Instead Aggron stayed put, a green shield forming around them both as PROTECT saved them from the crushing weight of stone.

“To us, Toughness is the strength to fight for what is right no matter how strong the opposition is.” Elinor spoke from within their impromptu cave. A quick shimmer of an eerie purple energy ran through the boulders and they began to fall apart sliced by Gron’s SHADOW CLAWS.

“To us, Toughness is being humble enough to accept that no matter how strong or courageous we might be, we should always be ready to ask for help in times of need.” And with that closing statement they both bowed ceremonially to the crowd and left the stage. She hoped this message would sit well with the crowd and the judges.

A rather understandable question was posed by the PokéManiac. Though by the time the question was posed, the Aggron had leaned down into an almost lying down position to cover his body in as much water as it could. A pleased smile on his Aggron-face.

“He seems rather comfortable?” Elinor replied.

“Honestly, I have never had problems with any of my Rock-types and water.” Elinor spoke thoughtfully. “Of course, they can’t swim, so It might be more of a case of them trusting me to not throw them into the deep end.” Elinor suggested with a mischievous grin as she pondered this paradox. Of course her Rock-types couldn’t swim and they didn’t exactly go looking for bathing opportunities, but they didn’t complain either when it did happen.

“As for the heat. It probably would. But I am not stopping him from leaving the water if he finds it uncomfortable.” Elinor moved closer to the steel behemoth and gently began to pat its head. With its mouth submerged it replied with a bout of relaxed bubbles.

Tumbling was the best part of forming new friendships, and so as Evette’s Shaymin came rushing in causing a tumble Shay the Shaymin simply allowed herself to be dragged along continuing the tumbling, even keeping it going for the fun of it.

This left Elinor with the apologetic trainer as she caught up to the little situation.

“Don’t worry about it.” Elinor tried to brush the woman’s worries away in a single statement as she came closer, though her gaze did check up on the two rascals from time to time. “Oh, but where are my manners? My name is Elinor. And my Shaymin over there - “ She gestured to the bundle of joy that was her Shaymin. “ - is Shay.”

They had promised to come here when Elinor had arrived. That promise had been delayed, but no more.

In tow or like equals, that all depended on perspective, but be that as it may Elinor walked alongside her fellow Ranger bare feet on the stony pathway as she listened to Andrea’s musings.

“Yeah that was definitely something!” Elinor admitted. “Though I hope the rest of 2024 will be somewhat quieter.” She doubted it, but one could hope.

Either way Andrea was the first to lay herself bare before the bath, and in doing so Elinor saw the marks left behind by a battle she did not know (or remember) mild curiosity edged her to ask about it. But she refrained. T’is was better not to reopen old wounds.

At Andrea’s request Elinor allowed herself into the water, letting herself go all the way below the water's surface head and body before resurfacing and releasing a relaxed sigh. The warmth of the water almost instantly worked to relax every tension found within.

But Elinor was not alone. Like Andrea she had desired to bring Pokemon along with her. Unfortunately the Pokemon she wanted to bring had been quite large, and so she had limited it to only a single pokemon, one of two which had helped fight Kyurem.

Gron the Aggron who gently lowered himself into the water as well, though as he did the water levels rose a bit. The few battle scars and tensions that managed to become submerged felt relief immediately, even if the rest of his body didn’t quite manage to meet with the body.
