Gram was not a normal Aegislash.

The shadowy aura that exploded out from Gram was not the same as that wielded by ghost type pokemon, nor dark type pokemon. It was a sheer black, the background disappearing behind its curtain as the sword swung into its opponent's attack violently, a shrill, joyful cackle of steel ringing through the arena as it smashed into its opponent's blades.

The Gym Leader remained silent. Durindana herself, remained stationary despite the charging behemoth, either unwilling or unable to get out of its path.

The earth cracked and trembled beneath the steely dragon her opponent rammed into her full force, her feet digging into dirt as she was pushed back— even as her arms came to hold onto her opponent, keeping herself close as the blow rattled through her.

A rock type move shouldn't have been effective, but what did typing matter before raw force?

As the steel plates of the dragon continued to rattle loudly however, it soon became clear that there was more than just the aftermaths of a heavy blow.

The rattling became louder, faster, and shrill, like pipe bomb nearing its—

"Cover your ears, everyone." Gwyar instructed to the public, hands moving to his ears.

And to Barron's polishing, Durindana said—

An unholy sound, worse than any nails on any blackboard, thundered across the arena as the Duraludon's roar fell into a shrill, ultrasonic frequency, weakening the structural integrity of the opponent's newly polished steel.

Not a bad idea—

Just a bad opponent.

Almost as soon as the words were out of the challenger's mouth, the Aegislash launched into the air whilst swiveling in place like a fidget spinner, before launching its shield at the opponent.

Getting yanked alongside the steel by its tassels, it smashed into it midflight, turning into a shield-crowned missile and accelerating towards the opponent at blurrying speeds.

Whether it hit or not (the battle would indeed be very brief if it landed), the following crash shattered the soil beneath and upheaved the earth, the shockwave spreading outwards like a wave of rock and stone.

"Ah. Right." Gwyar spoke after as the wall of dust was kicked high in the air. "This particular Aegislash is rather aggressive. Keep that in mind."

Though he could leash it, he hadn't quite managed to train the aggressive streak out of it just yet. Shadow Pokemon were quite something.

Tuesday, 7:32 p.m., Mossdeep City's Community Stadium.

It was a very unremarkable tuesday night in Mossdeep. The Shoal Cave was cold, the space center was running calculations for their latest tests, and the Mossdeep City's Gym challengers were getting packed and sent home.

"Andrea Vaneau." The gym leader's words rang through the air as he finished speaking with the last challenger, his green eyes snapping towards his next challenger. "Come."

Andrea Vaneau. A peculiar young woman who's name could often be found in the League reports. One of Hoenn's many 'heroes' that could be trusted to jump head first into whatever mess befell the region.

Probably not someone that needed to be treated gently.

And in any case, it took some balls to challenge a gym leader at their own specialty. He appreciated that.

With a flick of the wrist, his pokeball flew, releasing his Duraludon onto the scene, the dragon rearing back before roaring at her opponent.

"You may begin."

Thursday, 6:49 p.m., Mossdeep City's Community Stadium.

Another Thursday, another round of challengers for Mossdeep City's Gym leader to appraise.

The regulars were at the stands, but even without, attendance would've been otherwise strong. The League & Learn seminars were working well, in the gym leader's opinion. Even the quality of challengers was growing.

Not quite enough, though.

"Elaine Highland." The gym leader called as he finished critiquing the latest defeated challenger, turning his gaze back to the stands. "Come."

Her name and face were familiar— he was certain she was one of Hoenn's many 'heroes'. The locals that could more or less be found at every crazy happening with some worrying regularity, but whom were more or less confirmed to not be rockets.

With such an opponent, there was little reason to wear kids' gloves, specially when she brought forth such a well chosen pokemon to the battle.

With a flicker of his wrists, Gwyar nodded at one of the seemingly inert Aegislashes guarding the edges of the battlefield. It's eyes glowed, body taking on a dark coloring before it disappeared into the ground.

It emerged before the gym leader moments later, its red gaze boring unto the Ceruledge.

"You may begin."

Most people would never meet their heroes, let alone get a chance to learn from them.

And though only a few folk would get to exchange more than a few words with Cian today— the lucky few who managed to get their questions in —, all attendants would have the privilege of learning from Hoenn's triple H.

"Yes. We'll be with you every step of the way." The blonde confirmed, the staff behind him following up with nods, thumbs ups and grins.

This wasn't their League & Learn rodeo— they were all ready to make this their greatest success yet.

He was stopped just short of his seat by the very man he was looking for, his voice ringing through the reception.

The other gym leader seemed in high spirits. Well, he had good reasons for it. He was, technically, a World-recognized Champion now.

He cocked his head.

"Triple H?" He echoed cluelessly, blank smile firmly in place as he gave the younger man a frog blink.

The gym leader watched the other man eat with a blank smile, not commenting on the... many things that felt off about his colleague.

He then gave the sheriff a polite smile.

"Team Composition Strategies on the E4 Stage." He reminded the man, watching him unblinkingly before lightly cocking his head. Hi smile evened out, a measure of concern slipping past his mask. "Are you unwell, Navy?"

The subjects of these seminars were chosen by the speakers— Navy's state may well have been as bad it looked, the blonde was beginning to realize.

Though Hoenn got through qualified staff like a drug addict went through crack, the region never seemed to lower its standards. All who got their positions got them for a reason.

After a while, they have everything they need.

On the way back, however, it becomes quite taxing. The caverns are bizarre, hard to navigate whilst carrying along their heavy loads. Eventually, after crunching the numbers in his head— He begins to lessen the load, using it as a sort of rope to guide themselves.

He was very tired of going in circles.

When they finally found the hole they fell in from, his smile couldn't have been wider.

"There we go. Shall we, then?" He asked with a smile, releasing his Gallade once again.

The Gym leader was impassive as the storm came, glancing up. "And so it begins."

The world was covered by a cloak roaring dirt. Gym Trainers moved quickly, releasing Castforms in an attempt to contain storm to the battlefield.

For a brief moment, both pokemon were completely gone to the spectators, disappeared within the storm.

But whereas the blanket of sand was an impassable barrier to humans, to the Flygon, it represented no more than a windy day. Not great conditions for the Sandslash.

It looked around wearily. Where she its kantonian counterpart, she wouldn't have minded the sandstorm— she would've preferred it, even.

As things were, she couldn't see shit.

Only one thing left to do.

Blades of light surged around the Sandslash, briefly lighting up her surroundings as they spun about her.

Mr. Rockhead's gaze shifted. It snapped around from one incoming Shadow ball to the next, even as its body stayed stubbornly fixed towards the Jolteon, a compass facing its north.

The Shadow balls came— and the Probopass dropped, smashing into the earth— except not.

The magnetic charge repelled against the air despite the downward's pressure— caving the soil in even as the earth around the giant nose rose out like a wave, erecting a rising wave of dirt around itself, sending it hurtling towards the jolteon and the incoming barrage of shadow balls.
