The lowest of scum who would think of siding with them simply because of some spare change. But her attention is quickly drawn upstairs by the wavering tones of the old man, concern ringing in her chest as she promptly gets to her feet. And the world continues to remind them that it wishes to end, that their existences seem to be mistakes in the grander scheme of unknown universes.

The shattered glass is enough to kick her survival instincts into high gear, a hand reaching into her pocket as her other free hand remains clenched by her side.

"Don't tell me what to do." She snarls, following up the steps and readying herself for anything. Or well, a vaguely familiar yet alien pokemon staring right at them with bloodshot eyes and saliva dripping from its maws.

"Another one..." Her murmurs are drowned out by the crashing of thunder and stormy waves, her fingers now pulled out of her pocket as a Kirlia appears behind them. "Look for a chance, Thea."

Instead, she decides to turn the question back onto him, holding Rubia close as she picks her words.

"I've heard of rangers going after bounties. Less so freelancers that enter places without identifying themselves at rather questionable hours." Her movements are graceful, fingers carefully threading through black fleece. "And really, with how Rocket has made themselves... rather prominent in this region, I'd be inclined to relate your behaviour to their kind."

She knows that feeling very well, having been cornered time and time again no matter how far she tries to go. The scars on her arms scream of unspoken truths and her eyes are wracked with guilt. When she looks to Yule, all there is in her gaze is sadness, wordless apologies for everything that she's been through.

"I can't just risk it all on the prayer that I'll just get stronger, Rowan." Her words are strained, "Even if I get stronger, they'll be way stronger than I could ever hope to be."

Cracking, being buried alive under the pressure. For the first time in his entire life of knowing her, Rowan will see tears brimming, hatred burning in her eyes as she clutches at her wrist.

"When I fight, I'm not only fighting for me. I'm fighting for them... my pokemon..."

The only ones truly on her side.

"If I lose, we all lose our lives..." She's frustrated, but her voice never rises pass a murmur. Her nails dig deep into her palms, enough to start drawing trails of blood.

[attr="class","hanatext"]Kindness is met with a weak smile, empty hands that know not how to return the favour. So as the old keeper disappears up the steps, she's more than happy to have a moment of silence, listening to the waves crashing out on the beach.

And well, the odd footsteps whispered upon the winds.

It's odd to receive visitors at this time of night, even weirder to hear them invite themselves in without so much as a knock or a word. She can even see the Pancham next to him just raring for a fight, barely held down by his hand.

"We weren't expecting anyone at all." She responds in kind, softened Alolan accent still tangled in her words. "What brings you here?"

What has the lighthouse keeper gotten himself into?

[attr="class","hanatext"]Thankfully, the night goes by without a hitch. It does help that a literal giraffe of a childhood friend takes the bed closest to the exit instead of her - What with his long bean limbs helping to trip intruders up before they get to her...

When she arises, she's quick to ready up and head out, squinting a little at the morning sun and the hordes of pink that appeared overnight. But even that isn't enough to convince her to join the group for breakfast so she keeps her distance, allowing Rubia to wander for food but always within sight. It's when they get moving that she's far more at ease, blending in with the crowd as she listens to the tasks given.

"Be careful..." She murmurs, looking over Toshiaki Macallan before turning her gaze to the game trail. "I think... I'm going that way... Don't get lost, okay?"

She trusts him to be a big boy with some sense of direction.

Maybe.

As they move on over, her thoughts begin to wander - How would Sylvatica like it here? Would she lose her temper at the state of this road? Considering the weather patterns of thie region, why was there such a horrible storm to begin with? All these questions will find no answers, so she should just... focus on the task at her, shouldn't she?

Rubia is already way ahead of her, tugging smaller branches to the side of the road and occasionally stopping to snack on a few leaves or two. Awkward and unable to approach the other two present, Lilith just commits to picking up whatever she can, collecting whatever seems good enough to be firewood and stacking it to the side for later transport.

[attr="class","hanatext"]"Thanks for letting me stay the night..." She murmurs, chilled fingers carefully tugging at her cloak as she moves further into the lighthouse. It's quite empty, but not at all unhomely in a sense.

"Are you cold, Rubia?"

A Wooloo is her company for the night, quick to settle by her side once she finds a good place to sit. And Rubia takes it one step further, answering her question by curling up under the dripping folds of her cloak.

"It's just for tonight..." Idle hands finds comfort in combing through tangled fleece, carefully sorting through the knots and stray bits of debris picked up from the beach. "Better than having to sleep outside, right?"

[attr="class","hanatext"]Night falls quicker than she expects, but perhaps, that's due to her spending more energy than usual trying to keep up with Toshi's antics. By the time they hit the shores, she's half-awake, arms filled with a still rather excitable Wooloo and attention drawn right to her unfamiliar surroundings.

Safety lies in the unknown - Her guard is down as she carefully trails after Toshiaki Macallan, humming softly as she looks around. The malfunctioning phone she has is somewhat a concern, especially when she takes into account that her friend's device isn't working either - And by extension, possibly many more. Then again, barely anyone contacts her and she lacks any reliable contacts to reach out to; Nothing changes with this.

The crackling of fire nearly drowns Toshi's voice out, but she snaps back just in time as she crashes right into him.

"Sorry..." She murmurs, pulling herself upright before she takes a rough tumble. "I think it's already becoming that for me..."

Movements rustle all about the campsite, cheery voices greeting one another as they grab an unsuspecting bunkmate for the night. Taking a deep breath does nothing to quell the pit in her stomach as she turns to Toshi with a quiet plea.

"Can we... bunk together...?"

[attr="class","hanatext"]The smell of sea salt is an inviting call to the unknown, the thing that usually signals the next leg of her unending journey. In most cases, she expects to leave the past within a box that she'll never touch again but here, she finds herself staring back at something unexpected. Perhaps, something a little too familiar that she begins to question her sanity a little.

"You're imagining things." She murmurs back, taking a long sip of her juice to fill the awkward space growing between. But Rubia is quick to betray her, happily bleating as she rolls up to Toshiaki and gives him a gentle nudge to his shins. And that earns the Wooloo a squint from her trainer, followed by a brief exhale.

"I didn't expect to see you here."

"It does get hard, especially if you aren't that close to begin with. Or you haven't seen them in a long while."

Hell, she could probably liken it to how they'd bumped into each other on the snowy streets of Slateport. It had taken a lot for him to convince her to open up, even by just a crack.

"The real question is do you think you can trust him?" Experience pulls its weight in her words, concern traced in the way her fingers grip the cup she's given. "If you do, then sometimes having someone in your life can be a good thing."

Anyone other than her, she neglects to add.

"You don't have to rush and go accepting them right off the bat. If anything, it starts with how comfortable you're feeling about it..."
