"Energy…" Locke mused. The word tickled something in the back of his mind, until the memory of the museum incident and Uxie's appearance there suddenly surfaced. "Oh! Actually, it's good that you're here! I'd totally forgot about it, but-"

Martin's Ditto decided to charge off at the same moment Ji-Ji cut in with a low whine, poking at his trainer's back until they turned to face the dragon. The glowing dragon.

"H-Huh?! Ji-Ji!" Locke cried, fretfully trying to wipe the dusting of blue pollen from their Drampa. "Are you okay? It doesn't hurt does it?"

Locke was inches away from crashing into the curator where she froze at the bottom of the stairs. "What's happening? Why are we-eek!"

He threw himself to the floor as a Hidden Power sailed past the curator and towards him, gawking as the beam struck a statue behind him and abracadabra-ed it out of existence. There was only one other time he'd seen a move like that, and his gut proved right as his gaze followed the trajectory of the attack back to the Unown Assassins blocking off the museum entrance.

"These guys?!" Locke groaned, recognizing the black-clad assailants from the Star Soiree instantly.

The curator seemed to have been expecting the fight. She issued a simple command to her own Pokémon, and together they began to sing.

Casso-Casso held his tail to his sketchpad, painfully aware even as he put paint to paper that a mere Sketch would never do the Relic Song justice; it was simply impossible fully capture the scene in a single, infinite moment. The Smeargle was certain he would never witness such an enchanting performance again. Was this his limit as an artist? Where did one such as himself go-when he could see the boundary of his own talent laid bare before him? Was it all downhill from here?

Oh! But perhaps the beauty was in its transience! Yes, if he could recreate it, if only for a moment-

Locke gave it a two out of five. Too much Dream Mist.

They covered their nose and mouth, pushing away from the crawling mist until their back met the wall and-

The screams of civilians somewhere both far away and impossibly close.

The walls of the cupboard pressing in at every angle.

It's so dark.

Something was coming. They couldn't hear it but they knew someone was approaching the cupboard-could feel the part of their brain that stored this exact sequence of events pounding against their skull.

The doors swung open-

There was no classroom. No Kanto. No MATIAS SILPH waiting on the other side.

Instead, an unusual but oddly familiar yellow Pokémon floated in front of Locke, and their own voice echoed in their mind above the noise of the fight.

Energy pulses beyond what you detect.
Infinity, Primal, Dynergy.
Life comes in threes.
Dragons, psychics, sources.
It is the fourth that will ruin you.

Chiro-Chiro's Flame Body must've been working double-time today, because no sooner than Locke finished rearranging the nest the eggs inside started to shake. For a split second, it seemed as though he would have to corral a small swarm of baby Pokémon along the trip, a thought so exhausting he half-considered just walking back and telling the client to pay someone else to do it.

Until they realized it wasn't the eggs but the ground itself that was shaking; a slow but steady one-two that grew closer and closer, as a colossal shadow began to stretch over the cart. At last Locke worked up the courage to crane their neck back and look at the gargantuan creature descending them.

They thanked every holy being in existence that the Golurk was tamed.

"Um, y-yes? Yes." Locke picked their jaw up and regained their bearings; recognition replacing the shock. "Wait. Aren't you that kid from the museum?"

Locke jumped at the sudden sound of another voice, dropping their hold on Ji-Ji enough for the Drampa's nose to fully smack into the luminescent flower. He reeled back with an old man sneeze, scattering bright blue pollen into the air.

"M-Martin!" Locke sputtered as they turned to face their friend. "Ya shouldn't sneak up on people this time of night ya know!"

Granted, the other man wasn't at fault for his skittishness, despite how often their encounters ended in some disaster or another. He did glance over the POG Bank CEO's shoulder though, just to make sure he hadn't led any such trouble into his little corner of the woods.

The only thing he'd spot, of course, was a sweet little Ditto.

Locke gave the pink blob a small wave as he properly registered Martin's greeting. "Do you know what these are?" It wouldn't surprise him, given the man's apparent wealth of esoteric knowledge.

For a brief moment, Locke imagined a reality where MATIAS SILPH never came for him. Where he was left all alone in that classroom until hunger or madness finally drove him out. Trying to survive on his own in the apocalyptic aftermath of a conquered city. It wasn't hard, given recent experiences.

But how long had Eris lived that reality?

"It is weird," he admitted, "to think of them as something other than just the people who forced my family apart. I still can't say I forgive them for it, but despite how it may seem, it's not as though I've ever considered them personal enemies or anything." That'd be far too self-important for someone at the bottom of the power scale like him.

"For what it's worth though, I didn't see much of your pa, but he-It seemed like he cared about you a whole lot. I'm real sorry he can't be around for you anymore."

Locke listened patiently as Eris finally seemed to open up, keeping their expression open and soft even when the revelation of their shared region came to light. It made sense, really. Too much sense. Leaving had been hard enough, but nothing could've made them stay behind with things as they were.

It'd been easy to imagine all of Rocket as some collective boogeyman; the monster waiting for them outside the closet. But it was even easier now to picture themselves in Eris' shoes. If they'd been a little younger. If the world had treated them just a little more cruelly. If they'd landed just a little closer to that line when they stepped off the boat.

How many other Eris' were there on the other side of that line?

How many of them needed her like she needed them?

"…I can get that, at least," he finally replied.

"I know what it's like to be all your own, far, far away from the people who love you. It's whole reason I do what I do. So if you say they're your family-if you say they care about you-then that's all I need to hear. I'm glad you have people like that." He ducked to meet her gaze, sincerity pushing every word forward. "And I'd like to be like that too!"

The bold proclamation fully registered in his own mind a few seconds too late, followed by a wave of embarrassment that left him stammering to clarify. ”That is-I guess I just want you to know that-um…”

”just reach out, locke. whenever you need to.”

”You can reach out, okay? I know I'm not much, but just give the word, and I’ll be there. Any time, any place.”

Locke wondered, not for the first time, if he'd really ought to be wasting his time on this.

Deliveries were slow this time of year, sure, but there had to be better jobs than a wild goose chase like this. He was reasonably certain by now that whatever rumor the client had heard of some Ditto wandering the woods outside Petalburg was just that and nothing more.

They turned to Rio-Rio in desperation. "Anything?" The Riolu's eyes glowed with the small range of aura sensing he had, then shook his little canine head sorrowfully. Locke sighed, ready to give up, but their stomach rumbled with the pain of two skipped meals.

No Ditto meant no pay, and no pay meant no dinner.

So, with a regretful groan, they picked a random direction and marched on. "Let's try here I guess…"

Ji-Ji sniffed at the flower, his mustachioed snout kept mere centimeters away from its petals by his trainer's firm grip. The mysterious plant had suddenly cropped up in the same field as their Gracidea sprout, and Locke wasn't yet sure if it was safe for their Drampa to nose at. Especially since…

"I know buddy, I know. It's kinda like that tree…"

While the leaves and petals of the flower appeared normal enough, the pistil at its center was obviously crystal-like in nature, not unlike the tree the two of them had encounter on Route 113, or the Tree of Life in Slateport. Granted, those trees never glowed such a vibrant blue, but he still wasn't about to just let Ji-Ji go poking it. Not without proper investigation first.
