It’s an obligation, above all else. The party of a company with too many large accounts for him to ignore. A great client. It feels like a waste of his time, really. He has too much to do to be spending his time at meaningless events like these. Especially these days.

And yet, no one would even be able to guess that such thoughts dwell in the mind of Piazza Oro Grande Bank’s CEO. He smiles, he laughs, and he makes small talk with the ease of someone who is all too comfortable in this sort of situation. A vampire is the costume his assistant had chosen for him: a classic look in elegant fabrics. He even has a cape and fake fangs and everything!

The pink-tailed Meowth that stands by his side has a matching cape as well, and it is her that tugs at Mars’ own when she spots the familiar sight that is Brynnhildr Erling.

”...Yeah.” A hand brushes through Barnaby’s soft hair, gently stroking it. He focuses on that feeling. He focuses on the scents of lavender and sandalwood. He closes his eyes, allowing these things to ground him. ”It could be.”

Mars doesn’t really need to imagine, considering it had been recently that even he had gotten truly and properly drunk for the first time in years. Intoxication in the presence of strangers, though? Mars is way too distrusting for that these days.

Guess there’s always a silver lining to times like these, huh?” He smirks, because while most people would probably be appalled when hearing about how businesses have profited from chaos and dismay, to Mars that’s just how things are. He’s a businessman through and through. It’s part of the reason he had moved to Hoenn.

”We’ve been remodelling the branch that’s a couple of blocks away. I came to have a look at how it turned out.” Mars explains while watching the Lycanroc deal with a wild Lairon.

In the corner of his eye, he can see Dollar taking a step away, his attention being drawn towards a wild Electrike. Mars clicks his tongue, subtle as ever, and it’s all it takes for HIDDEN POWER to strike the electric canine.

Inevitably, ever since it first appeared in the Unown Report a few months back, every time he says or even sees his friend’s name it rings in his mind, appearing as a perfect depiction of what it’s displayed as in the app. The same thing happens with his own name.

The Inkay is sent to a Luxury Ball’s confines once the sensation passes, and with his new friend gone, Xanthos turns his attention to Johanna and her Drakloak. The dragon tilts his head, and the Dreepy in his horns do so as well.

Alas, expecting the unexpected should be one’s state of mind in a place like Hoenn, and this is what Mars is reminded of when Lulu Flint calls his name. He doesn’t look particularly surprised when he turns to look at her, even if she had indeed surprised him. He’s as composed as he usually is, smiling faintly.

”Flint. Fancy running into you here.” The Unown looks at her as well, recognizing her from the recent meeting in Sootopolis. ”I take you’re not here for tourism purposes either, hm?”

He knows her well enough to suspect that her presence here must be due to a specific goal, same as his. Likely not the same, although perhaps the interests might once again align in some way.

The response is immediate, for this is exactly the kind of reaction Mars had expected. It’s what he had planned for, if anything. There’s something almost adorable about Barnaby’s impatience.

Just as Mars thinks this, Fulgora calls out to him from up ahead, holding something over his head… Some kind of bug. A Shuckle, as Mars realises when he steps closer. Had he just found it among the rocks or something? It sure stands no chance to break free from the sharp claws of the feline.

He’s no stranger to Route 121, especially not with how much of his time is spent at Mt Pyre. Is not that Mars is particularly fond of the eerie mountain or that there’s something he mourns in its graveyard, it’s simply that there’s one particular pokémon species that seems to favour the area.

One of them walks with them now; standing on the ground by Mars’ side instead of floating, its short bottom limbs maintaining a steady marching pace for the sake of keeping up with both men.

Raziel Beckett is a ranger who works for Silph co…. He also deserted from Team Rocket and is the avatar of Reshiram. These are all things Mars is all too aware of when greeting the younger man.

”That’d be me.” He still smiles, casual and polite, even when the winds summoned by the familiar sight of SPRINGTIDE STORM tousle his brunette hair.

The attack seems to also anger a Escavalier that had been hanging out in the bushes nearby, and when Mars notices that the armoured insect is about to attack, he’s quick to whistle a short note for his Eelektross to act.

As if it were a matter of fate, Mars’ last appointment of the day had been at one of POG Bank’s branches in the lower district. They had been working on remodelling the building recently, and he had been meaning to come have a look at how it all had turned out. It was all as expected.

What he had not expected had been to run into Zev Harcourt… again. Hadn’t they had a similar encounter around here recently? Completely different circumstances, but still.

”Ah, Harcourt, we really need to stop meeting like this.” His tone is teasing, as is the smile upon his lips. The elegant Persian by his side chuffs a greeting, its crimson gaze fixing on both Zev and his Lycanroc alike. It’s considerably larger than what’s usual for its species.

GMH’s commitment to realism is nothing short of commendable. The graveyard, fake as it may be, brings reminders of dozens of others; of walking on wet soil while listening to the sounds made by both mourners and Corvisquire. Déjà vu. He’s done all this before.

How many times has he stepped onto graveyards like this one?

The feeling the sight of tombstones evokes in him is not fear, but instead something akin to deep melancholy, and when the sight of his own name is spotted on a nearby tombstone, it only brings reminders of how limited their time might be. There won’t be any tombstones if Hoenn is destroyed. No burials for them.
