The fairy type doesn’t need to be told twice. However, sparkling electricity still settles in her fur as she tries to evade the attack, making it stand on end. She looks like a little puffball, and hisses her displeasure.[break][break]

But despite a bad hair day, she’s otherwise unscathed. In her blindness, Topaz had charged right past her! [break][break]

Sugar’s ribbons curl and unfurl as she prepares her retaliation. A newfound grudge towards the Arcanine manifestis as she opens her maw, tiny fangs glinting in the light. The shadow ball that she unleashes pulses purple and speeds towards her opponent– proper payback for ruining her hair, in her opinion!

It’s silly, how such a simple phrase can make her happy. The smallest amount of kindness makes her smile blossom, and the lightest of pinks dusts her freckled cheeks.[break][break]

Now, they simply have to prove Ollie’s assessment correct. But that’s easier said than done! The disarming voice that echoes throughout the field is so loud that Luka has to cover her ears– an appropriate payback for Sugar’s attack.[break][break]

And Sugar herself winces, almost blown back by the sheer power of the sound waves blasted her way. But she manages to hold on, though she winces and falters for a moment too long.[break][break]

Despite the damage, the battle is far from over. Up against an opponent this huge, Sugar tries to use her smaller size to advantage, running circles around Tofu to throw off his rhythm. The field around them becomes covered in pink haze; her misty terrain hides her from view as she prepares her next strike.

Monster? Luka and her Sylveon blink in identical astonishment. They’ve been called many things before, but never a monster![break][break]

Luka almost wants to apologize- which is ridiculous, because isn’t this what battling is all about? It seems that Sugar is slightly taken aback as well, because she isn’t able to escape the glare in time. Suddenly, her legs seem locked in place, and even her rippling ribbons seem to freeze. Wide, aquamarine eyes stare into crimson red and yellow, unable to tear herself away.[break][break]

“Sugar! What are you- c-come on, we can’t falter now! You can do it!”[break][break]

Her trainer’s voice seems to help snap her out of it. With great effort, Sugar attempts to break free of the spell. However, she’s a sitting duck for whatever the Arbok’s next attack might be...

Maybe she should visit Slateport someday and give it a try. Even now Luka isn’t much of a battler; everything she’s learned about it has been solely for the sake of survival. But that’s not enough anymore, is it? If she’s going to make any kind of positive impact, she needs to work harder.[break][break]

Her lack of talent is apparent in the way Sugar fights now. Everything is intuitive; Luka is really only here for support and the occasional guidance. Perhaps that’s why her sygna suit doesn’t seem as powerful as others’. Their bond, at least when it comes to battling, isn’t strong enough.[break][break]

But this isn’t the time to ruminate. While Luka is busy getting inside her own head, Sugar’s the one doing all the work! In order to avoid a direct hit from Ra’s force palm, the Sylveon has to twist out of the way. She drops her opponent in the process, releasing the pup from her binding ribbons as she receives a glancing blow from the attack.[break][break]

It shakes her, but not enough for her to go down. They’re still in close range, so she opens her maw and lets loose a dazzling gleam. It feels like a sure hit, but the only thing Luka is certain of is that battles are always a little unpredictable.

It feels a little weird to be so playful. It’s comfortable but unfamiliar, like putting on a sweater only to find that it’s shrunk in the wash. But it’s still soft, and she still likes it. Maybe it’ll stretch out again with time.[break][break]

“C’mon, Sugar! I think we’ve got something to prove now. Let’s go!”[break][break]

Her Sylveon yips once and bounds onto the field, light on her feet as she squares off against Mawile. She’s at a typing disadvantage here, but that won’t stop her![break][break]

In order not to get caught by those threatening teeth, she makes the first move. A shadow ball is fired off towards Conibear in the hopes that it will keep some distance between them. As long as she can avoid getting in close range, things should be fine!

Everyone deserves a second chance.[break][break]

Such a sentiment is easier said than believed. But for better or worse, Luka believes in in it wholeheartedly. Despite everything she's seen and everything that's happened to her, she can't help but want to have faith in people. Some might call her naive or even foolish for giving everyone the benefit of the doubt; her good heart has certainly gotten her into trouble. But she can't help but think that a person can't be judged wholly by their mistakes. No one is born evil, after all. They were all angels once, and they can be so again.[break][break]

Maybe that is naive, but maybe the world needs people like her anyways.[break][break]

And that's why she's here, helping to recruit wayward souls into the ranger's amnesty program. She's far from the mastermind behind it; without ollie morales and freya morningstar it wouldn't be able to exist in such a capacity. She's just grateful that she's able to help in her own way.[break][break]

The woman who calls his name steps forward in a soft cloud of pink. She looks like she was made up in a dream; a dainty, fairy-like little thing. Her eyes rove about the room while the name remains poised on her lips, ready to be called again if needed.[break][break]

Even with the vital city tournament in full swing, a ranger's work never stops. In fact, since Luka had taken the previous day off to actually participate in a few battles, her work has started to pile up. She doesn't really mind it— her days have been filled with nothing but paperwork and various amnesty meetings as of late, and there's something comforting in routine.[break][break]

As an added bonus, it gives her an excuse to be a little reclusive. Sad as it is to admit, the tournament had been the first time she'd participated in something not related to work all week. She barely goes out and hardly talks to friends anymore, and work is a handy excuse whenever someone asks where she's been.[break][break]

But it seems that today, she won't be able to finish her work in peace. While in the middle of some paperwork the door to her office bursts open and the receptionist, Rosemary, sweeps in. She appears frazzled and more than a little annoyed— far from her usual demeanor.[break][break]

"There's a guy at the desk," she says breathlessly. "He's here for you, apparently? He's so rude, and he says he won't leave until he sees you." The woman wrings her hands together anxiously. "Can you come take care of it?"[break][break]

Luka blinks at her. "Eh? Um...sure?" Isn't this what security is for? Perhaps with the tournament going on, they're spread too thin. "Did he say what he wanted?"[break][break]

"Just that he wants to see you. Won't take no for an answer, and he's being a real dick about it." Rosemary swivels and marches out of the room, expecting Luka to follow. After grabbing a love ball from her desk, just in case, she does.[break][break]

"That's weird. I don't think I had any meetings today..."[break][break]

She has no idea who it could be— who on earth would want to see her that badly? The list of people she hasn't lost all contact with is embarrassingly short. She's still mulling this over as she rounds a corner, looks up, and gasps.[break][break]

Standing in the middle of the lobby is the last person she expected to see in Hoenn.[break][break]

The onslaught continues, and Luka's defenses start to weaken.[break][break]

There are only so many barriers Madeleine can throw up before wearing herself out. Luka cries out in surprise as a particularly aggressive Iron Boulder manages to cleave their wide guard in twain, but before she can react Remiel Calcifet and his Zekrom deliver a mighty blow right back.[break][break]

"Remi- eh? I-I'm fine! What are you doing here?"[break][break]

The question sounds more aggressive than she means it to. But regardless, she's baffled that Remiel Calcifet would waste time to check up on her. For as far as pawns go, Luka is insignificant. Disposable. There are other matters Remiel could- and should- be focusing on instead.[break][break]

"I think they're coming from down...there?" She gestures down to the crystal-lined chasm. "But don't worry about me, I mean it! Everyone else needs your help more than I do."

And the prince heeds her, disappearing back into the fray almost as quickly as he'd come. Luka stares at the retreating Zekrom for a moment before snapping herself out of it and focusing again on the battle at hand.[break][break]

"Right, okay. W-we need to do more," she mutters aloud. "Sugar!"[break][break]

Her Sylveon responds to the summons with a loud mewl, ribbons already beginning to glow in anticipation of Luka's command. It follows just as expected, with the pair executing their z-move:[break][break]

resplendent ribbons: Sylveon exudes a calming aura from its ribbons to affect nearby opponents. Those affected are unable to use offensive or status moves for a brief period of time.[break][break]

And just like that, a large swath of the oncoming paradox pokemon are reduced to motionless hunks of metal. They're perfect sitting ducks for anyone looking to take advantage of the opening she's created.[break][break]

But her lighthearted teasing doesn't last long, for she quickly excuses herself to place an order for her companion. She's the one who had dragged him out here, so treating him is the least she can do.[break][break]

When she returns a few minutes later, she holds a black coffee in one hand and a frosted donut in the other. With a cheeky little smile, she sets both in front of him.[break][break]

"Okay, so! Not to cut pleasantries short or anything, but I'm sure you're a busy man. So I hope you don't mind me getting right to the point?"

It's been too long is a phrase she's heard too often as of late. It's her own fault, mostly— she hasn't been reaching out to anyone, really. Lux, unfortunately, is one of many that she's lost touch with. She hasn't even been in regular contact with Sebastian Lavigne for a while.[break][break]

"It really has," she agrees, keeping her tone and expression lighthearted. Though she does pout a little when Sirius wriggles out of her arms, more enticed by sweets than her company. What a fickle little beast![break][break]

"I...mmm, I have some time! But gosh, you don't have to do that!" At least she says, but she has a sneaking suspicion that she'll fall victim to Lux's generosity whether she likes it or not. "You said you come here all the time? Hmm...what do you recommend then?"

"Ah, t-t-thanks. I think if I put anything else on, I-I'll get crushed to death." It's already cumbersome enough for Luka to move under all her layers. Any more, and she might just disappear! But the cold is still stinging her face, so she's happy to bask in the heat radiated by Isaac's Fletchinder. The bird is small enough to perch on her Spectrier's rump, much like a portable space heater.[break][break]

Her body gradually stops shaking, though she's far from toasty warm. It's bearable at least, and the chattering of her teeth starts to slow.[break][break]

"I c-can see why," she says, her gaze raking over the desolate landscape of ice and snow in front of them. "This place is horrible."[break][break]

She would never visit the icelands of her own volition. Besides the sheer danger of such a place, Isaac is right— it's heartbreaking.[break][break]

Her Spectrier steps lightly, as though they can sense every buried corpse beneath them. Luka shudders at the thought, and tries not to look too hard at the snow. If she focuses too much, she can start to pick out shapes beneath layers of frost: an arm here, a wing there, a snout that seems to have frozen mid-snarl, with icicled teeth that glisten.[break][break]

"I'm only here because of them," she answers, twisting a hand through the fuchsia wisps of her Spectrier's mane. "They've been restless f-for weeks now, and keep trying to drag me here." Her steed whinnies, as if in agreement, and toes at the snow.[break][break]

"I don't know what they want, but it's got to be something, right?"

Nervous laughter trills from bubblegum lips as Luka takes the indicated seat. She smoothes her skirt against her thighs and takes a quick look around Ollie's office— she's never been here before. Frankly, it's not that interesting, but she needs a second to recover from her little faux pas.[break][break]

"Ah. Um...I never congratulated you properly, did I?" She's finally able to smile at him, and her tone is one of earnest congratulations, not just sucking up. "You've really earned it, Mon- erm, Ollie! How does it feel?"

Luka tugs on the reins of her Spectrier just in time to avoid the sudden onslaught of mysterious Pokemon. Her hands wrap around her steed's ghostly mane as they veer sharply to the side, nearly throwing her off their back in the process. They're lucky Spectrier is dexterous— they narrowly miss a charging Iron Crown's advancing horns, and canter back to an area of the cave not yet breached by their new enemies.[break][break]

"What are those..."[break][break]

Gleaming chrome instantly reminds her of some of the Paradox Pokemon that have been appearing, though it's impossible to tell for sure. But frankly, it doesn't matter what they are. It's clear in an instant that the advancing Pokemon are hostile, and two choices immediately present themselves:[break][break]

Attack, or defend.[break][break]

Not the one to charge into combat first, Luka throws her efforts into defense. Her Hatterene is replaced by her Alolomola, who immediately throws out a wide guard to those who are already advancing to the front lines. "Take cover!" she shouts to anyone who can hear her, hoping to prevent a few nasty attacks or injuries. "W-we need to be careful!"[break][break]
