Somehow, most of their ward made it to the center mechanism and joined the already-gathered crowd.[break][break]

Their brief reprieve on the descending platform offered little genuine relief, however, as adrenaline began to fade and the effects of the TOXIC CHAIN's poison reared its infernal head. Feeling bile rise in his throat, BARNABY FINCH slipped his hand beneath his mask and coughed into his palm. When he withdrew it, he found that a foul, magenta liquid had stained his skin.[break][break]

They needed to hurry. Already, he could feel the pull of the NEVER-ROT at the edges of his mind, clawing at his willpower.[break][break]

Unfortunately, their previous skirmish within the prison wards was only the beginning of their journey to escape. Once the platform halted, the group spilled out into the pit — only to be met with terrifying opposition.[break][break]

Still holding Elisabeth Fiorelli's hand, the two ROCKETs dodged STEALTH ROCKS and wayward NIHILEGO tentacles. As they reached the center, BARNABY FINCH was quickly met with an unbearable heat and the reckless image of Andrea Vaneau attempting to climb the wood-legged creature, now sporting a new, horrifying mask.[break][break]

"We need to subdue it."[break][break]

They would all burn if the masked monster wasn't stopped. Even those that had escaped into the darkness weren't guaranteed safety. Whatever was below, it was the key to their survival. They couldn't be die here in this grotesque pit.[break][break]

Seeing the likes of priam conrad, Cillian Quinn, and DESIREE BLOOMS pulling at the pipes, he rapidly connects the dots.[break][break]

The multiple shadowed nooses that comprised his TOXIC CHAIN sprung forward, attempting to hold OGERPON in place while others tried their hand at combating the beast.[break][break]

Luckily, deciphering meaning was something ROCKET’s scientists did best. And he had faith that Lulu Flint was on the right track. Perhaps she could tease out the strange rituals done by the UNOWN in these ruins.[break][break]

Though BARNABY FINCH was a little surprised how easily mint frost was coaxed into sitting beside him, he was even more taken aback by the man’s willingness to sidle in close. An unexpected proximity, considering how icy their relationship had been in the past.[break][break]

But perhaps that era was behind them. In truth, Barnaby didn’t mind embracing this new dynamic. [break][break]

“That’s fine. It’s better than nothing.” He replied, casually bringing his hand up to the Infinity Tracker so that Mint was cradled into his side, between his chest and his arm.[break][break]

Barnaby’s eyes scanned the list of options, but he didn’t notice anything familiar. Not surprising, since he wasn’t much of a gamer. The sound of the cursor clicking through the options reminded him a bit of games his brother would play, however. Unbidden, a long-forgotten tune came to mind.[break][break]

“How thoughtful of you.” Though this statement was spoken through a rather sarcastic lens, the next words to leave the admin’s lips were more sincere. “Really, Howard. I appreciate you picking up the slack.”[break][break]

And that was a genuine sentiment. In many ways, howard slayte was an incredible asset to ROCKET. He was hardworking, earnest, intelligent — all hallmarks of a commendable leader. [break][break]

Some, however, were too smart for their own good.[break][break]

“We’ve caught sightings here and there.” Barnaby continued with a sigh, the elbow of his left arm propped on the edge of Admin Fox’s desk as he plopped his jaw into an open palm.[break][break]

“It’s an impressive beast, actually. Did you know the thing can even run on water?” Unlike its Kantoan counterpart, Galarian ZAPDOS was built to sprint, not fly. In some ways it made the LEGENDARY BIRD harder to track.[break][break]

"Easy enough." Handing the guy a few nails? Child's play. And, uh, actually kinda boring, too. [break][break]

Fairly quickly Barnaby found his interest shifting from wood and iron to the collar of Jethro Haig's shirt. Sweat trickled down from the nape of his neck, slipping below the hem to areas undiscovered. Thoughts drifted, his imagination much more exciting than a few broken boards.[break][break]

Preoccupied as Barnaby was, after a few minutes of work Jethro was unfortunately left with an empty hand, waiting expectantly for a nail that didn't come. Not until the cowboy's rugged voice pulled at Barnaby's attention.[break][break]

"—hm? Oh, my name?" Was that a blush on his cheeks or just redness from the heat?[break][break]

"Barnaby Finch." Perhaps he could tell from the faint Kalosian accent, but Barnaby wasn't from around here, either. Something they had in common.[break][break]

To underscore his amusement, Barnaby even wiped an invisible tear from his eye.[break][break]

Within moments of his arrival, a mousy waitress delivered tea inside a delicately floral, ornate pot, alongside matching porcelain cups. Accompanying the tea set was a small serving tower of accoutrements consisting of finger sandwiches, scones, and the like.[break][break]

"May I?" Barnaby offered, taking the teapot by its handle in a gesture that conveyed his intent to pour for her. If Elise Calcifet allowed he would do just that; if not, he would simply continue to fill his cup, adding a sugar cube or two to cut the bitterness.[break][break]

After an initial sip, he placed his cup on its complementary saucer but kept his finger on the arm. [break][break]

"You picked a wonderful place for respite. This is one of my favorite tearooms in the region, actually."[break][break]

Barnaby's demeanor was easygoing and casual toward Elise, as if he wasn't a complete stranger sitting across from her.[break][break]

To deny the underboss would have drawn unwanted suspicion, so here he was, leaning back into an uncomfortable armchair within the sterile office of marcus kotov. It was a stark place, without even a medical meme poster on the wall to lighten the mood.[break][break]

"Of course, Dr. Kotov. I couldn't say no when I heard it was you." Though perhaps the psychiatrist didn't remember their initial meeting; he'd been masked, after all. [break][break]

To stoke his memory, Barnaby offered his hand, thumb and index fingers splayed to show off the faint scar left there by that rabid bitch freya morningstar. Though it was light, the ragged indents of teeth formed a definitive bitemark. [break][break]

"I still appreciate the aid you administered before. Hopefully I can return the favor today."[break][break]

Hearing the other man's congratulations brought a small, practiced smile to BARNABY FINCH's face. He drew his arm back, settling it on top of his crossed leg.[break][break]
