When its name is called, the Decidueye clad in red and orange extends one its wings as if in greeting – it being considerably shorter than the wings of its more common, Alolan counterpart. Ju had looked just like Juniper once too. Lia remembers all too well how the distortion had changed him.

”Yeah… They’re actually brothers from the same clutch, but a few months ago I called Ju out to help me in the middle of a distortion and he changed into this. It was pretty shocking honestly, but he seems comfortable like this.” Lia smiles, because admittedly she had been incredibly worried when the change first occurred, even if she had seen distortions change pokémon before.

An idea occurs to her then, and her attention returns to Eva Morales.

”If you want to study him sometime, you’re more than welcome to. I’m sure he wouldn’t mind! …And, honestly, as his trainer I’d also like to know a little more about it.”

Golden eyes widen when seeing the Aerodactyl prepare a HYPER BEAM, but Eva Morales stops her pokémon before the attack is released. Some people would argue that getting hurt is what their assailants deserve after attempting to steal supplies like these. Lia may be too soft or too gentle from their perspective, since she’d rather not cause permanent damage to pokémon – especially those of avian species she’s fond of. A bit of a bias, admittedly.

After the Corviknight and its rider flee, the rest of the journey proves as uneventful as it gets. She makes the decision not to call the Decidueye back to their pokéballs just in case, and it’s flanking the Pidgeot that they both fly until the group touches down on solid ground.

When the professor praises her, Lia can’t help but laugh lightly, the softest hues of a blush colouring her cheeks.

”Ah, thank you, though really it was the pokémon who did all the work. You were great too! Your Aerodactyl is really strong.”

She dismounts too, moving on to helping with unloading the supplies.

”Woah, you’re almost a specialist in pokémon rescue, rehabilitation, and relocation at this point.” Lia may be teasing him, but undeniably so, there’s a proud note in her tone. She will always be glad to hear people are interested in ranger work, after all, especially when it's someone like Marshall, and even more so when this is her own area of expertise that they’re discussing.

He laughs when mentioning he had no idea what he was doing when getting her flowers, and the sound of her own laughter joins his – soft and gentle, as if not wanting to disturb the tired Cranidos.

”I bet that was really awkward for you, hm? You really didn’t have to go through all that trouble for me, you know? I would have liked any flowers you got me.”

She’s glad he did go through all that trouble, though. Just like she’s glad when he mentions they should go to the balcony and order some food. Marshall is thoughtful, and it’s one of the many things she likes about him.

”Sure, that sounds great. Hmm…We can order pizza or something, if you want.” Lia responds when getting up to join him out on the balcony. It seems like the most obvious choice, plus… hadn’t she seen a pizza box or two lying around before he started cleaning up?

The thought that Team Rocket may have somehow been capable of calling a monstrous threat to Sootopolis City is nothing short of spine-chilling. Why would they do that? How? Do they really have that kind of power?

Lia is full of questions, she’s full of concerns, and full of doubts. All of it distracts her, and by the time FERNANDO SILPH calls for an end to their search, she already had stopped because of the sheer nature of the discussion.

”Sounds good to me. Let me know if you need anything else from me.” She says politely, seconds before Locke Jamison’s comment makes the atmosphere in the small tunnel shift.

The tension in the air feels almost palpable to her. Is she just imagining it because she hadn’t expected the seemingly-meek postman to stand up to the councilman? Maybe.

In an ideal world, they would apprehend their attackers, but times are rough in Hoenn right now, people need supplies more than ever, and that makes their mission a vital one. Making sure their cargo arrives safely at its destination is their priority above all else. With this in mind, Lia’s Pidgeot follows closely after Eva Morales’s Salamence.

Lia herself focuses on the battle. Out of the three birds, only the Corviknight is left: perhaps the strongest and also the trickiest to deal with. Thankfully, with the professor’s Aerodactyl there, that makes it three against one.
[break][break]
The Decidueye work in perfect sync once again. TRIPLE ARROWS are shot by the red one, and when the Corviknight is busy attempting to avoid the ranged attack, the second Decidueye appears from beneath, swinging upwards with a SUCKER PUNCH.

”I think we’re in the clear!” Lia says over the sound of the wind.

He sits next to her. Right next to her. Lia is painfully aware of Marshall’s proximity, and when taking her glass of water from him, she does her best not to focus on this fact. Instead, she silently thanks him, taking a sip while watching the way he offers the Cranidos a drink.

”Look at you, I’d almost mistake you for a ranger.” She teases, setting the glass down before turning to look at him. ”Ah…”

Right. The flowers. The thought of them makes her smile, and inevitably so, a strand of platinum hair is gently tucked behind her ear while looking into those crimson eyes she has grown to like so much.

”Oh, yeah, I’ve been meaning to thank you for those. They were beautiful… My coworkers kept asking me about them.” There’s a light laugh, rosy hues overtaking her cheeks. It would have been much worse if Marshall had sent the flowers to Lilycove Ranger HQ, but thankfully her museum coworkers are mostly older than her and less prone to teasing. ”I really liked them, Marshall.”

She still has them at her place, and she had even made sure to carefully press some of them so that they won’t waste away, but of course she won’t tell Marshall as much.

Wonder fills Lia’s golden gaze when FERNANDO SILPH speaks of the Draconids and their village. She’s envious, in a way. If what the councilman says is true (she has no reason not to believe him, after all), she really wishes she could have seen the village before it was destroyed by Team Rocket.

”To just go and destroy such an important historical site…” There’s a sad note in her voice when she muses out loud while testing another potential meteorite. She adds it to her list of reasons to dread Team Rocket. People who don’t care for preserving Hoenn’s past are among the worst in Lia’s own opinion.

”I remember seeing the videos of Regidrago fighting Groudon. I didn’t know Team Rocket had caused all that… Makes sense, though.”

Memories come to mind of what she now knows to have been her last encounter with them; when one of Team Rocket’s avatars had broken into the Slateport museum and stolen from them. Remembering the nightmares she had been forced to witness then puts Lia in a sour mood way too quickly.

”Otto, give us a TAILWIND.” Lia tells the Pidgeot that is quick to do as she asks, summoning a gust that enhances their allies’ speed. It should be helpful with this inevitable fight, and also if they end up having to flee from their attackers – even if Lia doesn’t intend on letting it come to that.

”Let’s keep moving!”

She gestures for the pair of Decidueye.
[break][break]
A powerful LEAF STORM keeps their other attackers at bay, diminishing visibility while sharp leaves cut right through feathers. From it, the Alolan Decidueye emerges unharmed, BRAVE BIRD clashing painfully against the Braviary. Lia knows well that Flying types are affected normally by Flying type moves, after all. Sometimes the best defense is offense.

She finds it endearing, and maybe that says more about her than what it does about him. Lia can’t really recall the last time a guy had been this obviously worried about making a good impression on her, even going as far as trying to make sure she’s comfortable in his home. It makes her feel special. Marshall always makes her feel special.

A smile lingers at her lips with the thought, and following his suggestion, she takes a seat by the pillows that had been set up for the Cranidos. The pokémon looks confused when she releases it, but between the medication it has been given and the long day it has had, it’s too tired to act up.

”Here… Are you feeling better?” Lia speaks in a soft tone, allowing the Cranidos to rest its head on her lap and gently petting it. It’s then that she turns to look at Marshall, her gaze meeting his.

”Water is fine, thanks. Wanna come here? He’s really sweet.”

After all, it had been Marshall who had found the Cranidos to begin with.

This is not how she had expected this day to go.

To be entirely honest, Lia had also agreed to Marshall’s suggestion without thinking. It had been late, she had been tired, and her mind had been focused on worrying about the Cranidos’ condition. All of those things still ring true by the time they make it to Mauville Hills, of course, but above all else, the overwhelming fact that they’re going to Marshall’s apartment hangs over her – filling her mind with an infinite amount of thoughts, ideas, and concerns.

”Ah, don’t worry about it. It’s fine.” Is it really fine, though? Marshall is right: the apartment is a mess, but she doesn’t have the heart to agree with him. Were it someone else, sure, but this is Marshall, and Lia likes him too much to jokingly make fun of him about something like this – especially considering the reason she’s here to begin with.

She can’t help but smile when looking around, though. She even quietly stifles a giggle. ”It’s exactly what you’d expect from a single guy,” she thinks, and when Marshall looks at her again, she smiles warmly at him.

”Marshall… It’s fine. Really.”

The fact that he wants to tidy up is sweet, though. Then again, she thinks that about just about everything Marshall does, doesn't she?

Were the circumstances any different, being praised by Marshall would probably make her blush, and of course, she would claim it’s not really a big deal even though she has actually spent countless hours training her pokémon. It’s something that deeply matters to her, especially since becoming a ranger. She needs her pokémon to be strong for the sake of situations like this one.

Their circumstances are what they are, though, and that being the case, her attention turns to the injured pokémon the moment the Hippowdon is dealt with.

”Doing okay? We should take it to a pokémon centre… Do you think the Lavaridge one is closer than Mauville’s? I can have Lei do some healing to relieve the pain b–”

Lia pauses at the mention of photos and sketches, tilting her head slightly when golden eyes meet crimson ones. Oh, right… Her job. The whole reason they had come here to begin with.

She smiles faintly, apologetic.
[break][break]
”My Smeargle should be done with her sketches by now. I wanted to take so more photos but I can come back for them later. This matters more.”

Lia knows her priorities, and with that said, a decision is made.

After the Comfey alleviates some of the Cranidos’ pain with its FLORAL HEALING, they leave the ruins behind in order to take it to the pokémon centre.

Adaptability is to be expected of a ranger, that much Lia had learned a long time ago. She had first become one for the sake of providing aid to the people of Hoenn, and as such there’s a wide variety of jobs she’ll gladly accept. Still, in the end, aerial will always be at what her and her pokémon are best.

While Eva Dumont’s Salamence carries the supplies, Lia follows close behind atop of her Pidgeot in case they need to protect the shipment, and lo and behold, that much becomes a reality within minutes.

Out of black and gold Ultra Balls, a pair of Decidueye are released, for among all of her pokémon, they are likely the ones best suited for midair ranged attacks. Especially the one that looks unlike most Decidueye – of shorter wings and with red feathers atop of its head.

”Ju, ARROWS.”

As if mimicking the Archery stance he has seen Lia herself do a million times, the strange Decidueye readies to shoot, TRIPLE ARROWS being aimed.

When Lia had worried herself sick about how this trip of theirs would go, imagining every possible scenario she could think of, this hadn’t crossed her mind at all. Unexpected situations are not rare when exploring ruins, nor is encountering wild pokémon that get a little too aggressive because they believe their territory to have been invaded, but having to rescue one? This is more what she’d expect to find during a ranger patrol.

If she weren’t so concerned over the Cranidos’ wellbeing, she’d be amused at how both her professions often get tangled.

”Ah…Marshall, be careful, I wouldn’t want it to attack you…”
[break][break]
Thankfully, it seems like the injured pokémon accepts Marshall’s help given that it has no way to escape, and when her Comfey pulls them both out of the pit, she can’t help but smile at them.

”Hey, you’re doing great. We’ll get you some help in just a moment, okay?” Lia tells the Cranidos in a calm and sweet tone. One that comes in heavy contrast with the raging roar of a Hippowdown.

”Marshall, keep the Cranidos safe.” She stands, her smile now vanished. The Comfey fly to her side, and Lia is quick to give swift commands. ”Lei, TERRAIN. Fey, PETAL DANCE.”

When dealing with a pokémon like a Hippowdown, water is what most people would resort to, but Lia is no water type trainer, and instead she relies on what she knows well.
[break][break]
The Comfey work in perfect sync, their flowers twirling in the air. Lei’s GRASSY TERRAIN causes shoots of grass to emerge from cracks in the ground, and it serves to empower the PETAL DANCE with which Fey attacks the Hippowdon. For how small they are, the Comfey are clearly strong and battle-trained.
