You know, while watching the positively enormous Basculin swim at a river that is barely deep enough for it to do so peacefully, it occurs to Lia that she never told @marshall what his dare would be. She had been too preoccupied with being pulled into the water by this exact fish, and then also by Marshall deciding to give being a lifeguard a try and jump in to save her.

Even now, the memory brings rosy tones to her cheeks.

”You know, I had heard that Basculin change in these distortions, but I guess it’s just your stripes.” Lia comments while sitting by the water, golden eyes watching the pokémon that had followed their boat after their little fishing trip had ended. She actually has grown to like the Basculin quite a lot, and she finds herself smiling faintly at the sight of the now pearlescent stripe at its side. ”How are you feeling?”

It feels strange to be here. She feels as if she does not belong. They’re all her colleagues, sure, there’s more than a few acquaintances here and there, but she’s not nearly close enough for her to think of them as friends. Except, of course, for one person.

Lia had come to the meeting because it would have felt wrong not to, and even though she is no cook, she had made the time to stop by her favourite Alto Marean place here in Lilycove (she may have asked angelo vestri for his opinions on that one) for two particular things: garlic bread and focaccia.

She had assumed someone else would bring pizza.

She had been right, clearly.

”Hey, sorry I’m a little late.” She says to no one in particular when arriving, although she does wave at Noah Camus and Raziel Beckett. The dishes are set down on the table, and once this is done, golden eyes scan the room, searching for oh so familiar pink hair.

It does not take her long to find Zahra Belsky.

Of course Ollie, Zahra’s Absol, is already enjoying a slice of pizza.

”Figured you might show up for the food.” Lia teases, smirking, and for now, she grabs no meal of her own. These things tend to make her a little too anxious to enjoy her food.

Lia is, in fact, quite the fan of avian pokémon, but while she could sit here and talk to Locke Jamison for hours upon hours about all of their Delibird and what each of them is like, she resists the urge, knowing FERNANDO SILPH probably wouldn’t appreciate that very much. They’re here to get a job done.

She does not know what the machine in his hands is scanning for, and she also resists the urge to ask.

”If we go a little deeper into the cavern we might find some older meteorites, if that helps.” She points out then, knowing it’ll take a bit for the current ones to be carefully dug out. The whole reason why Lia had first become a ranger had been to help the people of Hoenn in whatever way she could. Usually, that means protecting them from dangerous pokémon, but things like these suit her too. As long as she doesn’t have to cook.

”Tell me about it, the last time I tried to make soup I put waaay too much salt.” Her nose wrinkles there for a second, as if disgusted by the sudden memory, but it’s quickly that this expression is replaced by a joyous smile, accompanied by a light laugh that rises in the kitchen. ”It’s great that you wanted to help, though. Things like these are important.”

She had not expected him to be the sort of person who’d care about volunteering at places like these, but Marshall always seems to find new ways to surprise her. It’s a good thing. It’s like there’s always more and more reasons to like him.

It’s like being in a movie. Or, well, that’s what he makes her think of when approaching on his motorcycle and taking off his helmet as if he were in some kind of ad, his red hair tousled yet somehow still looking perfect.How can anyone be so good-looking?

”Hi! It has, hasn’t it?” She laughs lightly, barely even a giggle. She knows it hasn’t really been a long time, merely a couple of weeks, but it sure has felt like a small eternity. It’s silly. They barely know each other, so why is that over these past few days Lia has found herself constantly thinking about him and about wanting to spend more time with him? Having a crush can be a terrible thing. On the bright side, it had led to this.

She had sent him directions to the ruin earlier, but it’s better to be sure. It’s not all that far from where they are, anyway. She wouldn't take Marshall to one of the more dangerous ruins, especially with what happened to the Regirock one last year.

A breeze pulls at ever so light linen, and for a few seconds, she closes her eyes, long lashes shielding from stray grains of golden sand. Even out here, by the intersection between Routes 111 and 112, the sun’s heat is scorching, and temperatures will be much higher once farther north – deeper into the desert.

Lia had told him she would meet him here, though: near Mauville, on Route 111, at the entrance to the desert.

Why does she feel so nervous while waiting? She had come prepared. She had done this countless times before. Is it because of him? Because while telling him about this upcoming trip to the ruins over text messages, it had occurred to her that maybe it would be fun to ask him if he’d like to come along? Lia had not expected Marshall to agree, but admittedly, more than nervous, she finds herself to be excited about this.

”At least you won’t have to fly over the desert today, Otto.” She smiles at the Pidgeot that had brought her to this intersection, a delicate hand brushing feathers as golden as her gaze. ”He should be here soon. I’ll call you if I need your help, yeah?”

A beak lightly presses against her arm, and it’s in a beam of light that the huge avian pokémon disappears back into an Ultra Ball’s confines.

Oh, right. The tattoo. Funny how that works, no? When having them, it’s terribly easy to forget about them, Lia having long since accepted this as a part of herself – one she had chosen. Mundane. But, when people see it for the first time, most of them point it out, suddenly reminding her of its existence. @marshall is no exception, and there’s no reason why he should be, but when he says it, she feels rather silly for being surprised… and also for being glad that he thinks it to be so cool.

”Ah, you think so? I’ve had it for a while now.” Lia chuckles, but it’s his next actions that really change things.
[break][break]
He moves closer, much closer than what she had expected him to, and although his fingers do no more than gently brush the design, the feeling of skin meeting skin is electrifying.
[break][break]
”Marshall…” It’s but a whisper, when looking over her shoulder at him, Lia knows she’s blushing. Isn’t that silly of her, though? ”Get ahold of yourself” says the voice of reason. ”They’re peach blossoms. It’s… a memory.”

They represent things. Have meaning to her. She would tell him about it, but it’s then that the moment is interrupted by the sound of boats being called back to shore. The fishing competition has ended and it’s time for them to announce the winners. She had forgotten all about the fact that they’re supposed to be fishing.

So, there and then, the smile Lia gives Marshall is one slight, gentle, and sweet, her gold-toned eyes looking up to meet his. She does not move away from him.

”Looks like we should head back…”

Maybe. Now that Splashfest is almost at its end, Lia finds that she actually doesn't really mind all this failure at Mantine Surfing as much as she had thought, and hell, she maybe even miss hanging out with he friend like this. In a way, she knows they'll become fond memories.

But, for now, she still gets to make fun of Angelo one last time...

He reaches for her hand, and with a soft smile brought upon her lips by the sweetest of his words, she reaches back. But then, suddenly, he pulls away just as their fingers are about to touch, and startled, Lia also pulls back. Oh. Had she misinterpreted his intentions? Is that not what he wanted? Does he not like her like that?

Doubts creep into her heart and bright red hues burn at her cheeks, yet it's his comment that causes her to relax, laughing lightly at the sight of the adorable little Sharpedo he pulls out of the sea.

"Aw, that's a cute one. I had to relocate one of those recently. Huge one, though."

Just as she's about to tell the story, Marshall takes off his shirt, and if her blush had faded at all, it sure is quick to return. He really must work out often... Do motocross racers really need to say this fit?

Catching herself staring, Lia quickly turns away, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear before reaching for her fishing rod one again. Just in time to reel in a considerably large Magikarp. One she releases with both skill and care.

But, as she does that, she realizes that Marshall does have a point: sitting around in wet clothes is really annoying.

"What's the matter? Giving up already?" She teases, standing up to casually take off the shirt she had been wearing. Beneath there's a simple white bikini top, and even though they're also wet, she decides to keep her shorts on. However, if @marshall were to pay attention, he would likely notice the tattoed peach blossoms that bloom all the way up her spine. At least it's not like she minds.
