He eyed the Ralts. freya morningstar 's report of the GYM JAM event had been incredibly detailed, and Hideo's along with Alexei Ivanov 's revelations had been a major point of contention at the very end. He gave the 'Ralts' a small nod and huff of a laugh. The ghost of a smile peaks through. "I've got a pair of always hungry eyes at home too. I get it." he said before looking back at Hideo and then at the rock type. [break][break]

"They're a good tart. Definitely got a better nose than ma as well." he said with a small nod. He turned back to Hideo for a debrief. "Ranger's and officer's alike have had weird siting in the early hours. Found weird scratches and possibly some purple hair tangled amongst branches or in observation point construction rubble." he aid. [break][break]

"We're not 100% sure, but by what people have gathered people, possibly something like a rabid pack of Delcatty or Skunktanks." he said. Isaac Merlo 's bond with Suicune represented purification. A defector where Suicune's waters washed away all stains of Rocket from his heart. Zekrom was a little more complicated. Most legendary beasts represented some sort of element or natural phenomenon, becoming in tune with it and even flourishing in the right natural disasters. They became emissaries of tragedy, so entrenched as to become as much of a blight on the earth as a boon. [break][break]

Zekrom, and the lost Reshiram are different. Their story, as far as Paxton had discovered, was of something more human. Reasoning. Ideals. Truth. The original dragon was split by factions unable to come to an agreement on how to move forward with the power granted to them. The original dragon all but lost, and only a husk remained. And then, of course, it's soul left in the form of opposites. Reshiram and Zekrom, competing beasts but not like Groundon and Kyogre. Not elemental but still complementary in nature, as much as Groudon and Kyogre rivaled themselves. [break][break]

For Paxton, it's hard to understand the motives of a Legendary. Much less something that seemed to exhibit something more nuanced than the desire to grow their power. Why exactly had Zekrom stayed with Remiel Calcifet ? And what did it see in him? The beast had chosen him for Rocket and for what? Because he believed Rocket would solve all the prince's problems? [break][break]

And now he was with the League, finally completing amnesty and earning his spot in AQUA. Paxton didn't understand it. But if the dragon was communing with people that were more than just his patron, he would seek it out and he would ask. Here amidst the mist, METEOR FALLS is overtaken as a temporary lair for Black Yin. There's a lingering smell of ozone, as he enters the ruins. Static present that made hiss hair stand on end, and floating, almost glowing rocks on the outskirts of the temple. He can see the black beast before he reaches it. Hiss proxy nowhere in sight. [break][break]

Bright blue eyes nearly stop him dead in his tracks. He's reminded how small he is as he slowed his gait and approached, hands up in surrender. But before he can speak, Zekrom does. It's disjointed, jarring. He wondered if this was how MATIAS SILPH and Eva Morales felt like all the time. Paxton let out a huff, covering his mouth and lowering his head in a sign of respect. He couldn't help it though. He'd come here with the same intention as Zekrom had. [break][break]

Paxton watched the dragon of legend settle, watching little sparks of blue ripple over its body. He stayed silent, organizing his thoughts and watching pieces of stone float across the ruin and around Zekrom's presence. It's nice to converse with it at least. Zekrom, perhaps by virtue of being eternal, did not rush him for an answer. It merely stared down unblinkingly as Paxton took his time. It's a staring contest Zekrom would win. He began with inhaling deeply and letting out a long sign. [break][break]

Nobody is around. Just him and god. [break][break]

"My ideal world is one without Rocket, and I have already gone through hell and back to see it happen. And because they continue to spread and blight my world, I take up arms once more to see them annihilated." [break][break]

"I am a shell of the kid I once was. I have no home, nor family to return to. I've lost every friend I ever had for that ideal world." He's lucky that CALLISTA MOON forgave him. That he can see MATIAS SILPH again. That Eva Morales is alive. And maybe friend is a strong word. Maybe comrades is better. But their lives bring him relief that something better than him survived, and continues to survive.

"I've died more than once for that ideal world. But if I had a choice, I'd probably do it again." After all, he'd found Eris Halla , and that had been the moment he had promised himself he would call it quits. But here he was. Still taking arms, still offering his services. Retired or not, broken or not. He doesn't know why, and maybe it's because he knows nothing else. Palkia had ripped him away from the sweetest sleep, and now he worked towards a new end with unprecedented fervor. [break][break]

"It's impossible to stamp out evil. Without Rocket, some other organization may rise up in the power vacuum to take its place as is often the case with terrorists. But Rocket has ballooned into something more. Perhaps a newer evil, untested and uncertain, would be far easier to handle." he mused. He grew quiet once more. The dragon is unmoved. Paxton leaned down against a fallen pillar, sliding down to take a seat and watch the dragon silenced by his own awe. [break][break]

It's hard to feel anything but under the shadow of something so large. The silence consumes everything, sparks of static and the crackle of sound they made echoing gently in the cave. Zekrom doesn't chase him off, merely observes. Paxton is comfortable. [break][break]

"Why Remiel Calcifet ? A man who has abandoned, country and principles?" he asked, watching intently for any sign of aggression. But the dragon doesn't move. It doesn't speak. It just is. Maybe like it's own choice in avatar. After a moment, it's clear he wouldn't get an answer. [break][break]

"I don't think your ideals can align fully with what a human's are." he said as he stood up and dusted himself off. Zekrom had moved from Rocket to League without question, following one man. "I hope for his sake, his ideals align with ours. Or you'll have to find a new human to contract with." he said as he dipped his head in respect at the dragon. [break][break]

"Unless you want to puppeteer a corpse." Again no response. Not that Paxton is looking for one after the warning. He doesn't bristle or snarl. He stared back at Zekrom, stating fact. There's nothing but the drip of distant water and sparks of electricity between him and the myth. So without goodbye, he turned to leave the way he came. [break][break]

thread summary: Post GOLDEN ERA, PENELOPE LIVY debriefs Paxton on her group meeting with the council and the commissioner. Over the course of an hour the pair discuss Hoenn’s major updates on avatars unaligned with League, work out a Project Sapphire restructure, and bond over their general distaste for Rocket defectors and MATIAS SILPH current involvement with Rocket Underboss Elisabeth Fiorelli .

They also discuss somewhat how to go about improving the League's reputation not just to the public, but to their peers who may still doubt the League’s intentions and systems. As usual, Penny and Paxton always seek to improve the bureaucracy in which they function. And while nothing is settled, they both somewhat agree on a possibility of using the newest Rocket defector, Isaac Merlo , as a mouthpiece to bring down Rocket’s own recruitment efforts.

why is it important?:I really liked this thread because it's a rare chance to see how well Penelope and Paxton work together in private. Paxton has far surpassed his initial position as a liaison for the Ranger Corps, and instead solidified himself as someone who can work one on one with his councilwoman. As her deputy, she has put her trust in his work ethic and then in Paxton himself which I think has only helped him flourish in this environment.

Paxton is a fairly straightforward guy, that’s slow to anger with the exception of Rocket. And while typically straight laced around most in the League, he can relax his guard around Penelope and he had a fairly good understanding of her boundaries with him. Until proven otherwise, he believes wholeheartedly in her cause as well as Dahlia’s. And while he may not enjoy Rocket’s defections, he has tried to put most of his animosity aside in order to trust dahlia goode as well as ollie morales with amnesty.

I like this thread because I think it showcases a lot of different aspects of Paxton in quick succession: his work ethic and the reason he’s working with the council now, his relationship with Penelope that came to a very heated start, his belief in Commissioner Goode’s decision making, his own tentative trust in Ollie as he continues to improve upon Amnesty for the future of the region, and the lengths he will go with to ensure Hoenn’s safety.

"It'd need your journalistic touch and ability to read the populace to deploy, but I think I can get a team together to funnel and revise investigations. We can always get something on your desk to review before finalizing with dahlia goode? At least that way, we'd have multiple eyes on it." he said with a small nod. "I'll see if there's a way I can try to streamline it so it doesn't stretch our current staff thin. And of course, we can always revise this idea later." he said before they moved on. [break][break]

"I've heard when it comes to the rest of the trash that Rocket spits out, he's allegedly the best there it." Paxton said, sighing as he tried to control his antagonism towards Suicune's chosen. "I think ollie morales has him on track for amnesty, and if he follows up and finishes like Remiel Calcifet...then I have no right to further complaints." he said, trying to manage his disgust for Rocket with the systems he believed in. If only because his Commissioner supported them, and he would follow her word on it. [break][break]

He let out a huff, a laugh he didn't bother following through with. "Nuanced conversation is hard to sustain with small attention spans." he said with a shrug. Even he, as much as he hated Rocket, had to contend and maneuver around nuance. Like amnesty. Purity. Attitudes with sharp edges vs softer ones. He understood it, but he was still human. It still made him angry to be forced to acknowledge something he didn't like was correct. Oh well. [break][break]

"You want to make Isaac Merlo a mouthpiece?" he asked, eyes narrowing in distaste. He'd heard more than enough coming out of that busybody's mouth during the holiday party. "He doesn't exactly scream 'disciplined orator'." Though her reasoning is sound. He'd heard that the very nature of Suicune sort of validated the defection the most. Something Zekrom can't exactly validate for Remiel like Suicune can for Isaac. He leaned back in his chair going from annoyed to thoughtful. The silence hung over them, Paxton staring at Penny's desk in silence as he ran through the possibilities. There's a lot of what ifs involved. [break][break]

"He'd need a lot of media training. An understanding of what to say, who he can talk to, and about what... No media tours. No showboating him like he's a fucking hero. But maybe a statement. Pre-recorded, no press. Not just because I don't trust him to put his foot in his own mouth, but because I don't want to make his press conference a target of retaliation with Rocket." his hand moved to his notepad, writing his thoughts down quickly. "But... it could work. Especially since he has experience with the worst of them." He passed over the legal pad. "I know you're low on time but...there's potential. As much as I dislike it, anything for the League." he stated, resigned to his fate.

He glanced down at hiss notes and then back up at Penny as she brought up PROJECT SAPPHIRE before nodding. "Understood, we will handle it in hose then." he said, not protesting the plan. [break][break]

"I suppose. If I had to direct my concerns it's more so towards the members of our staff that have been more vocal about their doubts. Dissatisfaction is common in government, but what worries me is individuals who may have reason to suspect corruption amongst our ranks. Those are leads I want to chase, given the resources." he said. "However, I defer to you on this matter. You have more experience when it comes to knowing the public." [break][break]

She suggests redirecting the public's attention and then his face contorts into a grimace. "You're having issues with dahlia goode 's favorite defector?" he asked, pulling the file towards himself after giving the woman a look for permission before beginning to skim.

Matias locks eyes with him and Paxton offer a smile of encouragement. It's small, but if he could offer any comfort to the man before him, he would. "Anytime, Matias." He doesn't push him for more, lets him settle in this moment of vulnerability. His hand drops and he gave a glance at the strange tera tunnel before wiping his dusty hands on his slacks and finishing up his notes. All of which are promptly shoved into the back pocket of his pants. [break][break]

"Alright, if that changes," he began, looking back at Matias. "or you just need someone to listen, don't hesitate to come find me." With that he turned to the sunken walls and began to climb his way out of the open air tunnel before turning to offer the man a hand out. [break][break]

He nodded already ahead of her, having tried to find a couple of decent points of reference. Something with the post in view, but still far enough that the DRK Triad wouldn't catch them moving into, hopefully. "There's a couple of sheer cliffs around them, the closest one may have me on the farther end of my shooting range." he said. "Hopper can take us." he added, the little Porygon chirping softly as it settled itself on top of the Magnezone. [break][break]

"Ok then tentatively. I manage to take out one or two of their Unown, they come for me, you move in closer and before they can spot you, call in League's Jirachi. Leave 'em dazed, pick 'em off." It was a good base plan for now. [break][break]

He does the same and grabs his rifle, checking the safety and pulling it over his shoulder. He tries not to frown, nodding with his back to her before speaking up. "Yeah. "Happy to report I slept 10 hours uninterrupted last night." Paxton said simply as he closed the door behind him, locking it for privacy. He gives a glance at the woman to let her know what he'd done before moving forward to take a seat in one of the chairs before her desk. The smell of flowers in various states of freshness strive to create a somewhat relaxing atmosphere, but he can tell the woman was still a little stressed. [break][break]

He sets down his paper stacks before rising and handing over the black box for her open as she wished. The card was one of those cute miniature ones with snappy, almost cursivefied print handwriting: [break][break]

The box inside contains, of course, a stainless steel flask with the words COFFEE BREAK engraved into the front under the logo, and her name freya morningstar on the back of the flask. "I'm just worried about the beams. Last time, one assassin nearly vaporized dahlia goode while we were out on a crystal bloom inspection." he said. Though nobody had reported similar attacks in Area Zero, he still figured they would be careful about it. "Like I aid, I can pick off a couple, they're not too beefy on their own. Just quick." he said. [break][break]

"Shadow Octillery, and a Mawile mainly. My Klefki does well on its own, and Joules here is as good defense as they are offense." He pat the Magnezone that floated close to him, multiple eyes keeping watch suddenly zoning in on their trainer and then Eva. "I can focus on the Unown, it might cutdown on their movement a bit." He didn't remember if they strange tech was only the Unown or something the assassin could do as well. [break][break]

"Sorry, I mostly deal in steel types." he added with a small shrug. At least hiss pokemon were flexible. "Joules or my Porygon, typically cover me when I get into my nest. Mawile and Klefki are better at close combat. Octillery is ranged." [break][break]

He paused. "We could radio in for the JIRACHI strike after I take the first two shots. Or do it before and confuse them more." [break][break]

freya morningstar 's report had been astoundingly detailed, receiving a variety of reactions from the man as he read through it. Neon sticky tabs had been placed all throughout the report, and he'd spent a couple of rereads simply snorting to himself or nodding along. His first go through was simply to review it for himself. He saw already a few conversations of interest to have, particularly anything to do with distrust of the League, or even simply its doubts. Perhaps that was something he could help remedy with Hideo Kino and Alexei Ivanov later. After all, it was part of the job to investigate leads right? [break][break]

The next review had been to develop a synopsis for PENELOPE LIVY , though he would highly recommend she read through the text presented herself. However, anything that would be necessary for her to be in the know about for her next meeting were highlighted and synthesized into a shorter, one page report, printed and set attached to Freya's original copy. [break][break]

The final reread was more tabs and more notes of discussion for Freya. This time he's managed to snipe a good two hours with the woman for the discussion simply titled for her: POST GJ DEBRIEF. A few minutes before the time slot, Paxton would pick up his packet and a small plain black box, before heading over to her office. He strides towards Freya’s offices, greeting a secretary before moving towards the woman's door. Much like their last meeting, he knocked twice, waiting to enter before stepping through. “Morning Councilwoman Morningstar.” he greeted with uncharacteristic cheer. For once, he didn’t look exhausted. Maybe it was because he was able to get a break between work and another field incident.

"Morning Hideo Kino ." Paxton greeted as he adjusted the strap of his rifle, and gave a quick wave. He hadn't seen the gym leader since the island raid, but he'd kept abreast the news. Coincidentally a possible new avatar, if the relationship fully developed. At the very least, a new asset to the League. 1/3 of the Lake Trio secured and one step closer to the red chain. It's early, but the rangers had reported the most sighting and activity of the strange beast during these hours. He had a hunch it was when it was most active, or perhaps the moment when it was ready to get back to sleep. "How much experience do you have tracking?" he asked before patting a pocket on his sling bag. "Have you had breakfast yet?"

"Another observation point right where those rangers said it'd be. They're just as resilient as Rocket." he said having finally found the faint but visible point pushed close to rather large expanse of tera crystal on the ground. Specimens of crystal poking up ever so often but overall appearing more from this distance like a glittering lake than crystal specimens. [break][break]

The coordinates they'd been given by the patrol that'd spotted it had taken some time to follow, with the path being a seemingly endless downward slope of curving and twisting paths. The sheer cliffs they stood on were a surprise. How deep did Area Zero go? Anymore and he'd expect groundwater or something worse. [break][break]

He sighed through his nose, eyeing the encampment through the scope on his rifle. "Seems...relaxed. Some equipment...like ours? I think on the edge of the crystal. About 3 visible. Either hidden in their point or patrolling nearby." Though, surely, they were far enough to avoid detection for now. [break][break]
