he seems earnest enough, kyle deduces from this brief interaction. if he wishes to, kyle was sure they'll have a rematch on a bigger stage some day.

he holds out his hand for a handshake.

"we only won due to technicality this time." he looks at his poochyena, who seems convinced that it wasn't. "i'm sure next time will be different."

kyle has other tricks up his sleeve outside of those he displayed in this fight, and he's sure noel does as well. if a rematch was going to happen, this fight couldn't be used as reference to prepare.

the chance for the come back passes, and the beep on his vital gear awards him with enough vitals for a loss.

kyle looks at his pokemon. he would have teased him more, but he can only do it so much before he inevitably destroys the pokemon's mental during the fight. there were more matches in the tournament to go, after all.

"hey, that was fun." kyle picks up his defeated pokemon before moving out to heal. "good luck with the rest of your matches!"

that's not fair.

he wanted to say the last line, but he knows he couldn't since he's the one that set the stipulations of the match.

the poochyena is thrown off by the toxicroak's approach, its small and light body skidding against the ground as it rides on the force to carry it away.

the glint on its eye starts setting up the future sight of a delayed strike.

"w-well, you might get used to it. who knows?"

unfortunately for the poochyena, he runs out of time before he can turn the tides around. aqua crash pushes him aside, and the vital gear provided to the contestants award them with their respective points

"huh?" he remarks, "looks like you lost, kilo."

it doesn't seem to affect kyle negatively. on the contrary, it did the opposite.

he pulls his arms upward and stretches before whistling for his pokemon to come back to him in its walk of shame.

"finally! i have an excuse to stop using puns now," he blurts out. he doesn't seem to care whether it was heard or not. "well, i'll need to get this boy to heal up. catch you later?"

surviving another exchange might give the poochyena a chance to strike back, but they're on borrowed time at this point.

"well, you just do your best, kilo."

there's no tactic to follow this time around. it's just hit without getting hit harder. the poochyena knows that one wrong move will be enough to take it down from the match.

it charges forward to play rough with its opponent.

electricity poofs up the poochyena's fur, ballooning the pokemon up in its appearance.

despite it, the superficial change in appearance didn't do anything to the pokemon. it winds up for another attack, lowering its head as it runs towards it, and then striking with a headbutt with the force of a dragon hammer.

"that means he's getting stronger, kilo. don't slow down!"

the advice is late since the pokemon has already acted before his trainer said something. at this point, though, kyle was just saying things for the sake of filling the silence with yapping.

mega evolution might have ended, but it was still a machamp at the end of the day.

"you better make good use of it, kilo," he tells his poochyena. "we don't want to embarrass ourselves after i said that."

a bark is voiced as a response.

it doesn't slow the momentum of the fight down. as soon as the previous hit lands and another strike from the machamp threatens to knock it away with overwhelming force, it pounces up.

a body slam right on the machamp's face was its way to play rough with its target this time.

there won't be any progress if the poochyena doesn't do anything proactive. kyle doesn't let the pokemon know, however, and lets it attempt any of its moves as it wants.

when the absol closes in, the glint of his eye conjures a future sight that could help it dodge against incoming attacks. kyle would've set a delayed attack, but he wants to see what his poochyena has in store for the fight.

he's not sure if he'll have time to unleash the move's power, even if his wish manages to stall enough for it.

"what can i say? i don't turn tail in this kinds of situation if i can help it."

it is what eddie has said though. win or lose, they both deserve a round of a-paws for this extra effort they are putting themselves through.

the aqua crash looms over the poochyena, threatening to finally take the final point out to win the match for its trainer. it stands its ground and welcomes it, taking a future sight to peek at the possible comeback it might take at this point.

"oh, shit!"

kyle was too absorbed with the idea of having a chat that the activation of his sygna suit comes in late. the sudden boost in parameters quickly transfer to his pokemon, who faces the wave head on.

the poochyena lets the wave crash on him directly as he charges straight at it, plunging into the depths before creeping up the pikachu above the surf with shadow sneak.

it pops out the water and tries to knock the pokemon off its balance before getting washed away immediately.

the poochyena attempts to get back to its legs, ready to fight back, but the match has already been decided. kyle picks it up in his arms to stop it from acting out.

"congrats on the win, but you better not get this victory over your head."

if he does, then kyle won't be able to confer him the title once they meet at the top.

playful banter before, during, or after the fight was always fun. kyle had not been the type to participate in such before, but influences throughout his career nudged him to a direction.

"good luck with the rest of your matches!"

he's not sure what to call it, but there's something about overcoming difficult adversaries that gets him hyped. perhaps it's the idea that his sygna suit synced with his poochyena, coupled with the fact that the pokemon considered itself the underdog.

kyle doesn't.

the pokemon rushes in, though its recklessness wasn't without direction. it dives into the shadows as it sneaks through before popping from below, using the momentum to push itself through against the melmetal's legs.

with the melmetal's wild attacks and its weight, the dark-type aims to tip the pokemon off. if it fails, the poochyena gets thrown off, but the gambit's reward pays dividends if it was to succeed.

"i don't even know when he learned that," he'd confess. as fun as having the same hat was, it would be a nice icebreaker if he did remember.

he doesn't share the same enthusiasm with the next one that the pidove fired off. kyle would be bothered by moves such as heat wave more than the other kinds of move, if only because it would make grooming the poochyena's fur back much harder.

the poochyena doesn't care about that though, and instead, is more focused on keeping on its feet while the battle between them was still happening.

it attempts to power through the heat, rushing his way with shadow sneak to pounce at the bird as quick as possible to stop it from burning off the tips of its doggy fur.

kyle has a few options to make this last exchange as poetic as possible, most of them stemming with the sygna suit being a repertoire of possibilities. against his opponent, there was only one choice, however.

"shadow sneak!"

speed against speed. it's just how josh would have liked it.

his pokemon's legs ramp up with power with the sygna suit, artificially boosting its running speed against the sprinting zeraora. physically, they weren't equals, but the boon of the suit pushes the poochyena's limits higher.

the pokemon sinks into the ground, slithering into the shadows, before launching itself to a pounce to make the first strike in this final clash. the zeraora and the poochyena with meet in the middle, and the split second of contact was to be the deciding factor.

weak as it may be, any attack was still an attack. kyle throws his own in the concurrent war happening alongside the pokemon battle.

"that explains why your jokes are like a bull in a china shop"

if the poochyena starts having doubts about facing the taurus, it doesn't show it. kyle knows through the scientific wonders of the sygna suit, but he wouldn't betray his boy like that.

it tries to deflect each hoof with a dragon hammer, but more often than not, it can't be helped that the second kick hits without impunity.
