Yvette poked through the undergrowth just off the path, trying to locate the source of the movement she’d seen a moment ago. Her Applin wiggled impatiently on her shoulder, a reminder that if she stayed too long, she’d be late to work.

”I know, I know! It’ll just take a minute, okay?”

The day had gone smoothly so far. While the hustle and bustle of the beach was keeping everyone busy, the work itself was easy. Fun, even. Then, without warning, the wind shifted, the sky darkened, and a flock of Wingull descended upon the beach like…

Well like a flock of Wingull at a beach.

Before the pesky sea birds could set to work bringing chaos to the white sands however, they were met midflight by another, larger shadow. The Salamence opened his massive jaw and let loose a terrifying roar, Intimidating the flock into retreating further down the beach, to the cheers of the kite-fliers below.

George paid the beachgoers no mind though, apparently more interested in having something to chase than actually saving the day as he raced after the Wingull.

”Waiting around is about ninety percent of zoology, hun,” she said, tapping her journal. ”And I sure don’t mind doing it with you.”

Yvette cracked open her book and settled in next to her son, while Frida hopped onto a nearby rock, kicking her little legs out as she glanced between the swarm, Xander’s sketchbook, and her own. The Ledian seemed to be doing most of the dancing, while the younger Ledyba were all huddled together off to the side, looking very tired.

”So is this how Hoenn’s league keeps their Rangers busy these days? Pretty tame compared to what we’re used to.”

Catching Cradily!

Yvette let out a noise of delight as a Cradily appeared from the tree line. ”Don’t see those every day.” Which of course meant she had to have it. If only she hadn’t left her Pokéballs inside…

A spark of genius came to her, and she braced herself against the fence post. ”Alright Carter, let’s trap it here!” She cheered, catching her Pokémon’s attention.

”Earthquake!”

Her Krookodile rose to his full height, giving his legs an unnecessary stretch, before lifting one clawed foot and slamming it down on the ground. Immediately, cracks began to form underneath the crocodile, then quickly spread outwards toward the Cradily until it was surrounded by them.

The attack seemed to end there, until a half-second later when the earth exploded beneath their opponent, swallowing it up to the very end of its elongated neck and leaving it to frantically squirm as it was effectively planted into the soil.

Yvette’s triumphant cheer was cut short however, as a loud splintering crack sounded behind her, and she turned around to what she already knew was there; the entire fence the two of them had put together up to this point, reduced to a long line of broken wood and wires. ”…Maybe…We overdid a little…”

”There! That’s the one!”

Bunsen immediately set out on the offensive, whipping his tail around to stop the squirrel in its tracks with a Fire Spin. It turned around to flee in the other direction, but was just as quickly met by another wall of flame.

The Charmeleon closed the distance while it frantically searched for a new escape route, trapping it in his jaws with a well-aimed Fire Fang. Just as the fight seemed over however, the Pachirisu let loose an explosive Thunder, freeing itself and knocking its assailant clean out.

Yvette returned Bunsen with a scowl, summoning her Krookodile in his place before the flames could fade away. It’s close! Don’t let it get away! Their target took the initiative this time, spinning around and unleashing a flurry of Swift stars at Carter, which he dodged with ease as he disappeared into the ground.

There were a few beats of silence while the crocodile stalked his prey from below, until he finally reappeared beneath the Pachirisu, Digging straight up and launching it across the field towards his trainer, who took the opportunity to throw one last triumphant Safari Ball at it.

Yvette brushed her arm against her forehead, leaning against the half-finished fence. Even with the temperature dropping, she’d still managed to work up a sweat putting the last few touches together on the ranch.

A low grunt and the clattering of wood announced Carter’s arrival with the rest of the posts. She gave the Krookodile an appreciative pat on the back as he crouched down beside her with a deep sigh. “Almost done,” she reassured the beast, pausing to take a long swig out of her water bottle. ”Let’s take a little break, huh? Stretch our legs a little.”

Yvette found a resting point amidst the dark and stone, paused, and joked breathily, ”About the same as every other cave we’ve been in.” But the texture of the wall changed as she started the next part of the climb, and it was only because she’d been looking for it that she didn’t lose her footing. ”Oh! Hold on.”

She jerked her head, silently directing Edison further downwards, though the sight of her own breath in the flickering light confirmed her suspicions well before the Lampent revealed what lay ahead. “Ice. We’re getting close.”

The remainder of the route was taken much more cautiously, their descent slowing to a near-crawl in some portions as Yvette carefully picked and called out the footholds that would keep both of their weights individually. Eventually, after long enough that her shoulders were shouting all the ways they’d take revenge tomorrow, the angle of the tunnel shifted upwards slightly, until there was enough of a slope for her to keep the pick at her side while she slowly slid herself forward feet-first.

Her foot soon met a solid wall, though the slight shifting of her weight against it revealed not rock, but a thin layer of ice. A few well-placed kicks dispatched it quickly, and Yvette pushed her way through into the expansive cavern beyond. She shook her arms out as she finally stood on solid ground again, reaching a hand out to Idris while Edison drifted around to give them some sense of the scale of the place.

”Well then. Where to next?”

Catching Stantler!

Not a moment later a Stantler stormed through the underbrush, apparently unhappy with the careless burning of its home, and Lunged at Bunsen with its large horns, the Charmeleon only leaping out of the way only thanks to the leftover adrenaline from the previous fight.

”Round 2 already, huh? Slow it down!” The deer charged towards Bunsen again, but this time was met by a billowing Smokescreen from the lizard’s mouth. Smoke flashed into flame at the corners of his jaw, and the Charmeleon followed with a Fire Fang to the back of the Stantler’s neck. Not tight enough to kill, but enough to make the Pokémon cry in agony as it bucked around wildly until Yvette tossed another Safari ball at it.

Most days, this particular shrine on the side of town was a nice place to roost away from the hustle and bustle of the ranch. It was quiet, isolated, and the volunteers never seemed to mind Vinci’s presence. They even let her play with the big bell if things were slow!

Today, however, was anything but slow. Strong winds had torn New Year’s fortunes away from every shrine in Oldale, scattering them everywhere and making the most awful mess. At the volunteers’ pleas, the Skarmory slashed a metal wing through the air, letting loose another flurry of knife-sharp feathers to Spike the slips of paper into the ground.

Was she possibly making a bigger mess? Sure. But at least they wouldn’t have to chase this one all over town.
