There was time, when she younger and more single-minded in her ambitions, that Yvette would’ve balked at the idea of children. They’d have only slowed her down.

And now…

”It warms my heart to know I unleashed such menaces on the world.” She reached over a pinched Xander’s cheek as she said it, and left her fingers there for a little longer when she realized it was their first bit of contact since he’d moved.

The moment didn’t last long, as she brushed the melancholy off with a little pat and a wide grin. ”Half the fun’s in the chase anyhow, so I think you two got all you needed out of it!”

”It’s hard work, but someone’s gotta do it,” Yvette teased, sinking deeper into the water. ”I’ll give you our rating when we’ve finished, Reverend.”

Yvette’s Cyndaquil lit up at the word Eruption, hopping to her little feet with excitement and unleashing a blast of fire and lava from her back. The magma mostly landed harmlessly on the stone surrounding the spring (though the group would have to watch their step when leaving), but a few globules rained into the water, sizzling on contact and heating it up unnecessarily.

”Hey, hey! Who’s orders are you following?” Yvette chastised her Pokémon with the cadence of someone who’d caught their dog eating something they shouldn’t be.

Did you know a giant anteater can flick its tongue 150 times per minute?

Even though the bites he was taking were undeniably smaller than others, the plates surrounding Yvette’s Heatmor steadily piled higher and higher, seemingly without end. Even when much of the competition had their fill, the Gluttonous Pokémon kept going and going, only stopping to lash his fiery tongue out at anything that got between him and his next meal.

At this point, the restaurant staff might’ve started to realize the flaw in their marketing strategy…

Yvette could see the sky over Petalburg Woods darken even from her ranch on Route 102. The black dome loomed over the horizon and crackled with a mysterious and now-doubt dangerous energy.

So naturally she had to check it out.

Not alone, of course. Her Growlithe kept pace with her trainer even as Yvette pedaled as fast as her human legs could move, abandoning her bike just as quickly when Pokémon and professor reached the edge of the distortion.

Even up close, she couldn’t see anything inside, which only piqued her curiosity even further. As much as she wanted to plunge headfirst into this mystery, a smart explorer was a breathing explorer. Instead, she picked up a small, twiggy branch, and chucked it as hard as she could into the abyss.

Her Growlithe, unfortunately, followed after it.

”Wait, no! Bad dog! No fetch!” Yvette’s words were drowned out by a sudden crash of lightning within the sphere, but it was at least just as effective at recalling her Pokémon. In seconds the pup was running back out of the dome, jumping into her trainer’s arms with pitiful yelps.

Yvette was mostly relieved her Pokémon was unharmed, but…something was off…

”…Did it give you haircut?”

Yvette let out a bark of laughter. The sound startled Cyndaquil into dropping her stone prematurely, who gave a little huff before diving back to retrieve it.

”I do a lot of things,” she said with a dismissive wave. ”But right now I’m just enjoying the hot springs.”

She gave Andrea a reassuring smile. ”No need to worry. Cyndaquil’s flame is internal, so getting wet isn’t as much of a problem for her as it would be for, say, a Charmander or Slugma.” As if to further assuage the girl’s concerns, the fire-type bobbed up again with her prize, paddling her way to edge of the spring and climbing out for a short breather.

Yvette rubbed at her eyes for probably the twentieth time since crossing the boundary, before finally submitting to the early morning dimness and summoning her Lampent for assistance.

The change in lighting was immediately helpful, and the professor gasped with delight as the flickering flame revealed the small bear cub peering curiously at them from the shadows. ”Oooh, look Eddy!” She cooed, directing her Pokémon to where the Stufful was quickly disappearing into bushes behind him. ”Don’t let it get away!”

Edison obliged, taking the light with him as he chased the cub into the undergrowth. There was the sound of a brief scuffle, followed by the high-pitched cry of something struggling to escape, until the Lampent at last returned with his prize.

The Stufful flailed about where it was caught in the lamp’s thin, metallic arms, but found itself thoroughly Imprisoned in Edison’s grasp until Yvette was ready to capture it.
