[break][break]"and a/c is better?" she shakes her head. the two of them have spent enough time together for june to tell she's not actually affronted by what she said. there's no real anger in her face, just played-up offense. "i'm not taking any naming advice from you. knight? a/c? be so for real."[break][break]passively, annalise holds her phone flashlight and watches june get tired of babysitting. another pokemon — one she's never seen before — joins them on the ship. her eyes linger on the magearna watchfully as it struggles to hold onto the xurkitree. [break][break]"what pokemon is that?" she asks, tipping her head toward the metal pokemon. her question fills a silence broken up by june's fiddling. [break][break]after some time, the tinkering is rewarded as lights switch on within the ship. annalise looks around with wonder, turning her phone flashlight off now that the spaceship is powered back on. june doesn't let her marvel for very long before telling her to take a seat. [break][break]"have you flown something before?" she moves to sit down, but something on the dashboard grabs her attention. she moves to the front of the ship, squinting at the text. "look at this. it's a log of ... something."[break][break]the text is hard to read, but she discerns it after a moment. "white hair. appeared. said. here origin point? she. searching ... took dark stone."[break][break]her face clouds with worry. the mention of an origin point lingers with her even as she takes her seat, settling like a rock in her stomach. [break][break]"whenever you're ready, captain," she says, the color drained from her voice. [break][break]

in her dreams, annalise knows the desire swirling around in her head isn't real. she finds people in neon-lit streets, some of them familiar and others not, and tells them not to look in the mask, to not believe their toxic chain is salvation. the wellspring mask doesn't show the future. she knows it doesn't.[break][break]but each time, consciousness rushes back in and this certainty crumbles like gravel off a cliffside, plunging her back down into the dark. she wakes up in a panic, sitting up on her cot, fearing fezandipiti has seen the dreams that aren't her own. [break][break]they can't be her own. [break][break]the toxic chain is her only way out of this prison. it promises her escape and whispers revenge each time she looks at THEO BECKETT. he will die. she will be happy. it gets her through days subjected to laughing hour, through beatings endured from the creature she and Greyson Connors saw in rks.[break][break] and then, at the end of each day, she eats and lays on a hard cot and feels her delusions slough off her mind as sleep claims her body. [break][break]each night, she searches for her pokemon. each night, she finds them as she left them a dream before — suspended in a glass display, unresponsive no matter how hard she hits her fists against the glass. this time, she leaves them to venture deeper into the city in search of something that could be of use to them. [break][break]a tower protrudes above bright buildings, giving purpose and direction to her wandering. she finds its base. she finds a pokemon she's never seen before suspended within, unconscious like her pokemon. fingertips touch the glass, eyes searching for vulnerabilities in the casing. she sees none, but she does see someone on the other side of the display.
[break][break]Remiel Calcifet, his figure refracted in the strange fluid between them. in her dreams, her hate is the commanding influence on her mind once more. and yet —[break][break]"calcifet."[break][break]— should she warn him? to better her odds of escape?[break][break]her mouth opens again, but her thoughts muddy. she can't really hear the words as she speaks them, can't tell if she's taunting him for being trapped here or offering him help. just as she comes to understand her dream is disintegrating, she feels tidal wakefulness break over her. [break][break]she shoots upright in her cot, heart hammering as her heretical thoughts blunt against the absoluteness of her toxic chain. tears drip through the bottom of her mask, landing in protectively cupped palms. [break][break]as he finally gets his thoughts out, her chesnaught's pokeball is spat out of the void. her house feels like its closing in around them. [break][break]"necrozma?" [break][break]the grass-type appears and uses PAIN SPLIT. with a pained sound, chesnaught collapses onto one knee. [break][break]"are you trying to get yourself killed?"[break][break] the question is high and sharp and accusatory, anger born from the shrillness of fear.

she deserves to relish in the impressed look in his eyes, to smile self-satisfied that she drew her knife before he could manipulate the ground into something deadly but she just feels a tangle of guilt as the adrenaline leaves her system. for a moment, he had been an echo of everyone that had ever hurt her, vulnerable beneath her. [break][break]but she sees him now. MATIAS SILPH. looking steadily at her instead of the knife. he grabs her wrist to move the knife away, but she's already in the stages of withdrawing it anyways. annalise doesn't feel cocky. she thinks comfortable is a better word for it, maybe. she feels comfortable here, with MATIAS SILPH, in a simulated fight where she knows they aren't actually trying to kill each other. she takes the rest of his critique with minimal pouting, readied for it by the preceding gentle pat on the shoulder. [break][break]she's acutely aware of something against her skin, but it isn't him this time. she lets him guide her hands into place, but it isn't necessary anymore. she knows where they belong. she knows the steps to throw him over her shoulders, just as she can approximate the spot where he'll land after knocking him down twice before. [break][break]and she knows the flash of silver that appears from within her jacket. she's imagined this with so many rockets, but a split-second of clarity reminds her of the man below her. she doesn't follow through with dragging the blade across his neck, even though she can feel the lingering itch in her fingers. [break][break]she stops holding the handle against his throat and sits up on top of him, chest rising and falling with effort. her eyes wander from his face, looking for his killing blow. [break][break]"holy shit," she says, words muffled behind the cupped hands over her mouth. he coughs, chuckles, then critiques her. the immediate concern of hurting him dissipates. she drops her hands, eyes bright with delight. [break][break]i did it![break][break]"it was my first try." annalise holds a hand out, but he gets to his feet on his own. "you can't judge me that hard. also you didn't — " [break][break]he steps into her again and her voice lapses for a moment as she gets back into position. annalise remains rooted in place, peering carefully into the darkened interior of the ship from a sort-of-safe distance. june sleigh appears out of the corner of her eye, heading straight for the open door. [break][break]"careful," she warns, but follows in after her. she feels through the dark, letting the occasional lightning strike outside guide her footsteps. the other woman is already at the control panel, fiddling with levers and switches that could do any manner of things. june had fixed the power plant machinery, so annalise has confidence she can fix the ship, too. [break][break]"i named it licorice." few pieces of annalise's past remain, but the naming convention of her team has survived the weathering. "but i think it'll break something if i bring it back out, so ... "[break][break]from her pocket, her phone appears. she turns the flashlight on and stands out of june's way, holding her phone at an angle to illuminate the panel. [break][break]"you'll grow on your xurkitree eventually. just keep trying to bond with it."

annalise startles as Greyson Connors is given consciousness with a snap of the delphox's fingers, flinching away as he screams in pain. she's never seen him like this. she's never heard him like this. [break][break]his eyes open, searching but not quite seeing. eventually they settle on her and he smiles despite his condition. she smiles back, but her returning panic is barely concealed beneath the expression.[break][break] he doesn't know where he is. [break][break]"of course." she wipes her hand on her clothes again and leans over to smooth his hair. there's tenderness to the gesture, to the caress of his cheek beneath her thumb. it's an affection their relationship has been bereft of, returning in his eleventh hour. "i'll always come." [break][break]her smile wavers. she feels a lump forming in her throat, but she doesn't want to burst into tears and scare him. she swallows hard, composes herself without the aid of psychic this time.[break][break]"i know it hurts but you have to stay awake. what did this to you?"[break][break]when she first saw his wounds, she thought he had been gored by a pokemon, but the disarray his pokemon are in makes her suspect it's something else.

MATIAS SILPH draws her against his body for his demonstration. her eyes follow her guided hand to the back of his neck, but she just feels for his wrist as instructed. [break][break]closeness distracts. she hears him, but she's not always fully listening — made distrait by the feeling of his neck beneath her fingers, the sturdiness of his body against her own. he resists a little against her grip and she blinks, engrossing herself in his lesson once more. [break][break]"dislocate your shoulder — got it." [break][break]annalise punctuates her words with a just kidding laugh. she runs through the steps once in her head, then tries. as he taught, she pushes against him, ducks, pulls. even if the throw has the uncertainty of a novice, she knows the most crucial part: let go.
